This is a 6500 year old harpoon made from a Red Deer antler and found in the River Dee. It is of a similar type of harpoon to those found in Mesolithic caves or rock shelters near Oban. This piece has been carbon dated to around 4500 BCE.
They create water bubbles around their heads that allow them to live outside of water. The tip of their tails is made of sharp metal and can be detached to be used as a throwing spear, growing back in a mater of moments.
They are based on the Water Anole (Anolis Aquaticus), a type of anole found in Costa Rica that creates air bubbles to breathe underwater
Their harpoon shaped tails being used for hunting is based on spearfishing

A temple style toggle harpoon authentically mounted on pole, 19th century.
The temple harpoon was invented in 1848 by Lewis Temple, a black whalecraft maker, which quickly became the standard by the industry. This example is marked "S B" for starboard boat.
