“Animals, Theo once told her while setting to paper the last verses of his enchantment, are very attuned to magic. She watched as he methodically fiddled with the inside latch of the box and slipped the piece of paper into it neatly. From the stable near them, she could hear Bae growl and when she looked back at him she could see him shaking his head erratically, his horns bumping hardly into the wooden walls. Reaching out desperately for his arm she tugged harshly to gain his attention, but Theo merely continued to fiddle with the latch. When he was satisfied he closed the box with a click and set it in the hole they had dug earlier, then covered it up with dirt. When it was completely submerged in the ground, he patted Kore’s tiny hand and motioned for her to listen carefully. At first she wasn’t sure what to look out for, the silence being the only thing that was keeping them company, but then she realized: there was no more growling anymore.”
