Y’all art gcse is hard.
We were told to make a mock GCSE sketch book theme thing.? We were given a word to start with, ‘EVENTS’. My Hellenic Polytheist ass decided an event was a time period. I chose Ancient Greece and Rome. I won’t be showing my arrest studies yet but jfc I fucking hate art. If there’s any British year 8s or 9s on here thats see this. DONT TAKE ART UNLESS YOU HAVE PATIENCE! I’m in pain lol

Girlhood is romanticising pausing your studies in order to become a teacher (because PhDs are expensive, there is a lack of funding, and I come from a poor, working class family) by comparing yourself to Anne Shirley

Sobbing I accidentally unfollowed you. Anyway!
I'm fascinated by amadeus, mycerinus, and the vampire! What are they about?
shdhvsbs don’t worry abt it lmao
ok so. amadeus is a slightly neglected and very underdeveloped story idea about a guy who can raise ghosts by playing the violin. badass. he also has long white hair and this is a Very Important detail. anyways i had slightly forgotten about it but now i'm thinking i could make it soo interesting. anyways it starts:
It was quiet in the cemetery, for once.
the vampire was quite a recent idea. it's about a young woman who is (inexplicably) locked up by her parents in an empty, featureless room and one day a vampire flies through her window in the form of a bat. it's also pretty underdeveloped but it's supposed to be a metaphor for like. repressed queer love. yeah it's been done before but still. it begins:
The vampire came at midnight, as vampires so often do.
now mycerinus is a retelling of herodotus's story of mycerinus, which is too long for me to explain but if you don't know it i recommend you look it up because it's awesome. this one was going to be sooo interesting bcs the themes of fate and the gods are ones i love to write about (oh also read matthew arnold's poem mycerinus too). also i had the idea that the 1st half would be from menkaure's pov and the 2nd half from the oracle's pov <- so we can see him beginning to doubt the judgement of the gods and stuff. also tragic homoerotic bonds. i really really love this one, as much research as it is inevitably going to require. it begins:
Menkaure watched his father’s death with very similar emotions to those with which his father had watched his birth.
needs editing but yeah you get the idea

its taken nearly 5000 votes for someone to finally correct my 2AM french, but it took about 200 for the first person to correct that the greek was actually latin.
anyway of all the people to make a viral post joking about linguistics it should not have been me, person who speaks english, got a C in GCSE french 21 years ago and only can speak indonesian when she's drunk.
anyway I apologise to the people of ancient rome for maligning their language, you can't edit polls so we're all shit out of luck on this one

Hera nickname possibilities part 2
Still focusing on Aimsey sorry, I have decided to delay the Guqqie one until we know what the hell is going on with A! Guqqie.
So... Some stuff happened, and it caused me to rethink several of the names and the importance of some themes, so here are a few I think things have changed for.
Required traits
Knowledge(curiosity as a fatal flaw preferably)- this is difficult, because it's actually surprisingly rare in myths, and often in different contexts as to what we're after.
Violence- this is self explanatory and fortunately very common in myths (in fact in even gcse level Greek and Latin there are at least 7 words for kill/die)
Space association- preferably with the moon, but that's a bit specific, and as most nicknames for Aimsey variants are masculine a bit difficult with Artemis/Diana's whole mainly female hunter group
Asterion
I still quite like this one, though for different reasons.
As I mentioned last time, Asterion is the Minotaur's birth name giving him an obvious link to violence, and as the stepson of king Minos he would have been a prince. There is also perhaps a knowledge connection with the labyrinth, although that one is perhaps a bit of a stretch. Also as the most popular translation of Asterion is literally " little star we have a convenient space connection as well.
Similarly, many people ( even in ancient Greece) felt that the Minotaur may have started off innocent but was warped by his father's rage and his imprisonment in the labyrinth. Which could perhaps mirror how little control A! Aimsey seems to have even in their own curiosity, which instead of reclaiming their own past and fate appears to be amounting to little more than a desperate grab for understanding and control.
Penthius
I hate Penthius.
He is such a a fucking perverted tyrannical foolish asshole and he deserved every bit of what he got " slave to my slaves" (δουλεύοντα δουλείαις ἐμαῖς) Penthius dear those are your people, as king caring for them is your duty you little shit.
But anyways
Firstly, as the main - mortal- character in the bachea he is part of a literal tragedy and we all know these idiots are doomed in every universe so unless they feel like being nice to us for once that's perfect.
If you don't know the story of the bachea I shall leave a summary of the plot at the bottom.
Despite Penthius's overall shittyness the themes fit perfectly. Firstly, as the cousin of Acteon he has a lovely little link with the moon - a very negative one, Artemis killed him, but so what- and with his constant war-mongering with violence as well. He is also royalty, and if you reinterpret his all around pervyness as curiosity that fits too.
He sought knowledge, and it killed him
Narcissus
This is a bit of a stretch here and I know it, but doesn't it just seem like the perfect, very derisive nickname for an alternate universe version of your ex who stabbed you?
Firstly, oh my God the knowledge association, Narcissus was cursed to die when he truly " knew himself" (A! Aimsey's urge to find out what happened to them?) and let's be honest that's probably the best case scenario for our lovely prince. He was literally killed by knowing too much, in this case about himself. Also, as much as we go on and on about the whole " narcissus rejected echo and she died because of his selfishness boo hoo!" Their deaths were very similar, if anything being simply an extension of the cycle of suffering cause by Zeus fucking around and someone else finding out. Oooh cycles... Could be parallel with A!Aimsey following in Tud's footsteps perhaps.
Again a bit of a stretch but I still kinda like it.
Bachea summary
First Dionysus arrives in Thebes and asks everybody to accept and worship him. Nearly everybody is fine with this but the king- Penthius- objects and refuses to believe in his godly power. In response, Dionysus mind controls all of the women of Thebes and they run off to the mountains and literally just sit there, not being a problem or anything.
Dionysus comes to talk to Penthius who tries repeatedly to threaten and insult the completely calm Dionysus. And reveals his preoccupation with sex and completely unfounded belief that the women are having a giant orgy on the mountain.
Penthius decides to attack the women but Dionysus "convinces" him otherwise ( oh look it's our good friend mind control again ) using his desire to be a voyeur to the non-existent mountain orgy. Dionysus then dresses Penthius for slaughter and parades him to the mountain where he is torn apart by his family.
Yay! I love happy endings.

Our actual marked performance was 2 chorus peicee (one tradition and one modernised) and a monologue each from Trojan Women (I did Cassandras monologue where she tells Hecuba her plans to kill Agamemnon and then she goes into a rant about the events of the Trojan war and how Paris and Hector will be rembered as hero's because of it). Alot of our studies were also on Trojan Women and we did alot of extracts from it and parts of the play in class but the only part with an audience was the chorus/monologue.
My English GCSE was 6 marks off but when I talked to my teacher about it she said they're not likely to put it up that much by remarking it:( luckily as I did my maths and English GCSE exams with my college anyway I got the same teacher (I've home schooled since year 10 because my school had been really really sucky so I decided to home school then did my exams as afternoon courses at college). I did retake my English in November though and find out on Thursday if I passed or not
Oh and yeah I'm English:)
-rory
Ahh that sounds so cool! ngl ancient greek/roman monologues kinda went off, I had to memorise a bit of the Aeneid where Aeneas and Dido argue and she was SCATHING. Do you have to work on the script at all with the modernised one, or is it given?
Aw that's so close, how annoying :( I'm glad you got the same teacher though, I think the consistency helps with it! good luck for Thursday!!
I've had maybe 2 or 3 anons who have sent multiple asks at some point, and you're all English hehe. Clearly got the best people there 😌

leo valdez headcanons just because i can
beware my dodgy formatting (no spoilers-ish)
i had the revelation that leo valdez is essentially latino han jisung
they’re so similar it’s scary??
anyways i think that leo is a weeb and we were robbed of more gamer!leo content
leo is definitely an isekai enjoyer and he’s into the tsunderes (eg. asuka)
as a minor im gonna keep the nsfw headcanons in my brain LMAOO
leo gives me drum player vibes? like he seems like he has a really good sense of rhythm and if im not mistaken he’s known to always be tapping on something
generally id say that he can probably pick up any instrument with a little bit of hyperfixtation
piano player leo??? shit
i think it’s mostly emphasised that leo is a mathematical and engineering genius but damn can we talk about his artistic/linguistic skills?
he designed the argo II when he was FIVE. and built it when he was what, fifteen?
uncle rick’s magnum opus was thinking of wii controllers as the way leo steered the argo II
this makes me think that leo mods all of his devices lol he probably built a mario kart simulator for one of his younger cabinmates (a leo take on the classic racecar bed)
leo doesn’t get to use his fire abilities nearly enough :( his toolbelt kind of steals the show
or is it my vague memory of the series? dunno im gonna reread it this summer
anyways i can’t help but feel leo having a hammer as his weapon is a lil boring
i see him with a set of throwing knives that he probably lights on fire? awesome as fuck
leo my bilingual king? i headcanon that he learned his times tables in spanish (this is me projecting)
me encanta leo valdez porque él es muy gracioso, amable, y guapo LMAO (gcse spanish skills 😌)
leo is definitely a graffiti artist. every single wall in his workshop is some sort of mural
short king. definitely wears insoles
what i said earlier about the drums? that’s him sorting through his severe anger issues and crushing guilt woohoo
CORRECTION; according to the wiki he naturally understands greek as a demigod. damn
ok so i know that there are some like s-tier physical powerhouses on the argo II but leo can hold his own in a fight and he definitely moves like a dancer
dude fought a minor goddess 1 on 1 in HER turf and WON, while also killing low level monsters at the same time
we as a fandom are sleeping on my boy leo so much
im sorry but leo is such a malewife.
ouuu imagine if leo named festus feliz instead KYAAA THATS SO CUTE
i died a little inside when i found out two minutes ago that reyna calls leo “mi hermano” (my brother)
im literally pretending the angst doesn’t exist bc yeah. ok that’s it
thanks for reading c:

I wanted to do a reread of trc with my friend but now I'm currently here reading Herodotus' Histories that contains footnotes such as "while there is no complete English study of Homer's influence on Herodotus we have taken our reference from this German book from 1972 that discusses it"

The French School System - Part 2
Part 1 is here.
(This is accurate as of June 2023, but the way the Éducation Nationale is going, it probably won’t be so for much longer...)
SO! Part 2. Small explanation of Collège.
(Under a cut because it got long.)
Collège is the first part of secondary school, so what you’d call middle high in the USA I think? At the end of Collège is the Brevet, which is roughly equivalent to UK GCSEs.
These are the years (taken from my previous post):
“Collège” - 1st part of secondary school (at the end of 3ème is the Brevet (equivalent to GCSEs) which certifies the end of Collège) - equivalent to middle high (US) 11 - 6ème - Year 7 - 6th Grade 12 - 5ème - Year 8 - 7th Grade 13 - 4ème - Year 9 - 8th Grade 14 - 3ème - Year 10 - 9th Grade
Ages are the usual age when starting the school year.
*
Here are the usual time slots for each year in only the mandatory classes:
Tumblr media
6ème: 26 hours/week
French: 4h30
Maths: 4h30
History-geography (+ a weird ethics and civics thing): 3h
First language (other than French, typically English): 4h
Science (in 6ème it’s regrouped as a general big thing instead of being subdivided): 4h
Sports: 4h
Art: 1h
Music: 1h
5ème: 26 hours/week
French: 4h30
Maths: 3h30
HG (+ the other thing): 3h
First language: 3h
Second language (mandatory, other than French, typically either Spanish/German/Italian): 2h30
Biology + Earth Sciences: 1h30
Physics + Chemistry: 1h30
Technology: 1h30
Sports: 3h
Art: 1h
Music: 1h
4ème: 26 hours/week
Exactly like 5ème.
3ème: 26 hours/week
French: 4h
Maths: 3h30
HG etc: 3h30
The rest is the same as 5ème and 4ème.
.
BUT. There are 10 extra hours in total during the year of “vie de classe” which are used for when your main teacher (prof principal) needs to talk to you, or to do class projects, or to vote to elect class representatives.
AND. 3 hours of the 26 (in 6ème), 4/26 in 5ème are used for “accompagnement personnalisé” which is basically your class goes in half-groups and has more attention given to each student than can be given in a full class. These can also be EPIs - enseignements pratiques interidisciplinaires - which are things that mix two subjects (or more) together to do a project. So if you did something that mixed French and Music, for example.
Students can also take an extra language from 6ème on, usually Latin/Greek or a regional language.
Additionally, students can have extra activities at school (clubs and sports things and stuff) which don’t count in the 26 hours.
*
Now! We are lucky here! Because I still have some of my timetables from when I was in 4ème and 3ème. 5ème is basically the same as 4ème, and in 6ème you just don’t have the second language.
Here they are:
4ème:
Tumblr media
3ème:
Tumblr media
Now, I’ll be the first to admit I was a dramatic little student who just wanted to take as many classes as possible.
Also, I was in the bilingual section and had more English than normal people because I was in an international school.
As you can see, in 4ème I had more than 26 hours. I had 33. This was because:
- I had an extra 2.5 hours of Mandarin (as the regional language because I lived in Asia)
- and 2 extra hours of English because I was in the bilingual section, and 2 extra hours of history-geography in English for the same reason
- Vie de Classe was counted in my timetable as a regular class (so 0.5 hours per week, or once every two weeks) because it was easier that way
All of which bring us to 33 hours.
.
In 3ème: 33.5 hours.
Same things as before, but I only had 1.5 hours of HG in English, and an extra 30 minutes of accompagnement personnalisé . I’m still missing 0.5 hours in that but I’m too lazy to spot them.
*
All in all, this is pretty regular! It’s very common for French students to have Wednesday afternoons off, and I’ve yet to meet a school which doesn’t do that. We also have a lot of homework, in addition to all the classes. The system works fine for collège.
*
Now onto the Brevet! It’s a national exam.
(for the link skip to “Objectifs et socle commun”. And at the end there are some previous exams if you want to check them out)
It’s more or less equivalent to English GCSEs, I think?
Tumblr media
It’s the lowest level official national certificate you can have that counts as a certificate of education.
It’s out of 800 points, including 400 determined by specific exams. You need minimum 400 points total to pass.
It’s four written exams: one exam in French (100 pts), one in maths (100 pts), one in history-geography (50 pts), one in science (50 pts).
AND one oral exam (100 pts). Which is basically a glorified presentation.
For French:
- worth 100 pts
- lasts 3 hours
- 3 parts (well 2 officially):
   - 50 mins: Grammar + reading comprehension + questions on a text
   - 20 mins: dictée (spelling text based on a text read aloud)
   - 1h30: writing (either text analysis or creative writing based on a prompt)
(Officially: the first two parts are together and collectively are worth 60 pts and last 1h10. The last one is 40 pts.)
For maths:
- worth 100 pts
- lasts 2 hours
For HG:
- 50 pts
- 2 hours
For science:
- 50 pts
- 1 hour
- 2 out of 3 sciences: remember how there are 3 science subjects? You get 2 out 3, randomly picked by the ministry for all of France. This also unofficially means 2 parts of the exam, so you get 30 minutes for science 1 and 30 mins for science 2. But you can do 25/35 or 50/10 no one cares.

Well, now that I’ve explained collège and the Brevet... onto the next post! Lycée!

What are you doing in Latin and Greek classes atm (also are they good a levels / a level equivalents becuase I've just got back from an evening thing about colleges)
ooh ok so my school is very intense in general so we're going through the language content very fast + revising it all from english to greek or english to latin (AMAZING way to learn but very difficult). in latin literature we're doing love poetry, so we have an anthology of some catullus and some propertius + a little bit of tibullus and sulpicia!! really enjoying that <3 and in greek we're studying iliad 22 (death of hektor) which is. OUGHHHH
ok a level advice. it's intense. like if you're not ready to read a ridiculous amount of literature and learn a ridiculous amount of vocab you probably shouldnt do it and if you're not super passionate about it again dont do it (this isnt supposed to sound condescending fdksjhsf picture me saying this very gently it's just a lot of people take latin because they did well at gcse and all of those people are desperate to switch only 4 weeks in). if you do love classics and you are interested in all aspects of it then go for it!! it's super fun and the teachers are generally very passionate too + if you have a nice class it can be literally paradise i am not kidding <3

So in primary school, like 6-11, you do one language but it's the very basics. Mine did french but my siblings went to a different school that did Italian. Then in secondary, 11-16, you do two for the first two years and then whenever you pick your GCSE subjects, you can drop. I did French for gcse, but for my first two years my school offered french and spanish. Most people in my year picked a language, some didn't so it's not required. Most secondaries offer french and spanish, some have a third which is usually german but italian is offered. It depends on the school really. Sixth form, 16-18, are all subjects you chose, either 3 or 4, and you can pick the language.
I went to a private school for sixth form that offered Latin, german, French and spanish but they were also a private school that could offer Latin at secondary and sixth form level. Most state schools wont.
I want to add that the systems changed quite a bit since george was at school. But generally, two languages are offered minimum even if you dont take one for gcse. Which is basically like core subjects (english, maths, science) plus subjects you pick like languages and humanities. So george would get a basic knowledge of French and spanish (if his school offered those two) before picking gcses.
I see I see so is it common for British people to only speak English as well or ? Just curious cause at least in America most people don’t really have the motivation to learn to speak another language as most things here are strictly done in English and even at like a hospital you’d have to request a translator. Where as in Greece I noticed the menus all came standard Greek English French German
