Release
Can we look past the pain and frustration to see glimpses of hope?
Is anyone really okay? I mean, we’ve all been through a lot these past few years, right? As I walked towards the gym of my daughter’s school to volunteer for an event, a staff member walking the other way greeted me with a smile and asked the obligatory, “How are you?” It felt a little awkward to realize that we were both walking at such a pace towards each other that quickly became a pace away…

Safe in the Everlasting Arms
After journeying through the Daily Audio Bible for 14 out of the last 15 years, I have grown to find comfort not only in the Scriptures, but also in the smooth voice of DAB’s primary reader, Brian Hardin. So recently, I decided to listen to the next day’s reading (he seems to upload them for the next day early each evening) as I am drifting off to sleep. I should note that I usually don’t even…

Ours are the Hands
Ours are the Hands
At the Vincentian Family Center last Saturday, I was privileged to share the morning devotion with the “team”. Those who follow me on Facebook or my website know that I am a deep well and drawing from that well is way more than anyone would need to hear. “Little” said often comes with a “bigger” punch. I prayed for that! When I woke up earlier Saturday morning, everything I had planned to…

David and the Temple
Psalm 132: 1-5. LORD, remember David, and all his affliction How he sware unto the LORD, and vowed unto the mighty God of Jacob; Surely I will not come into the tabernacle of my house, nor go up into my bed; I will not give sleep to mine eyes, or slumber to mine eyelids, Until I find out a place for the LORD, an habitation for the mighty God of Jacob. There is no absolute proof as to the…

The Rest of the Story: How is it going to be written?
As this week begins, the reality of transitioning and new beginnings comes to mind. Trying to understand what needs to be done and if all the actions that have been taken are enough to get the rest of the story going or if something different is going to be necessary. We’ve got the message of Genesis 31 that got things moving and the response from so many great friends who work at the starting…

Blessed to Be a Blessing
14 Yet it was kind of you to share my trouble. 15 And you Philippians yourselves know that in the beginning of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, no church entered into partnership with me in giving and receiving, except you only. 16 Even in Thessalonica you sent me help for my needs once and again. 17 Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that increases to your credit. 18 I have…

God's Miracles Testify that He Has Us in His Hands: Sunday Devotion
Porto, Portugal, June 2023 Psalm 66: 5-9 Come and see what our God has done, what awesome miracles he performs for people! He made a dry path through the Red Sea, and his people went across on foot. There we rejoiced in him. For by his great power, he rules forever. He watches every movement of the nations; let no rebel rise in defiance. Interlude Let the whole world bless our God and loudly…

Hold It Loosely (Exodus 1:1-7)
Sometimes, we must bear in mind and remember that great blessing also has an underbelly of great blight.
When Jacob went to Egypt, his son Joseph was already there. So Jacob took his eleven other sons and their families. They were: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, Benjamin, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher. Altogether, Jacob had 70 children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who went with him. After Joseph, his brothers, and everyone else in that generation had died, the people of…

God's Glory, Our Delight
In wond’rous grace, God hath ordained our fate,To be the mirrors that his greatness show,Like telescopes that magnify stars’ state,We’re fashioned to reveal his radiant glow. His goodness, truth, and beauty he bestows,With wisdom’s gift and justice firm and pure,His glory in our deepest joys arises,For in our pleasure, his praise doth endure. We, beings molded by the Maker’s hand,Find truest…

In Their Hands
we do have angels who are in charge of our lives. They watch over us and keep us “in their hands”.
This little phrase is found in several places in the Bible. One of my favorite Bible study methods is word studies. Psalm 91 took me to this phrase. I’m trying to memorize the whole chapter. I’ve been successful to memorize two verses at a time. Now the challenge is to be able to say the WHOLE chapter! Maybe I’m too old, but with old age comes time. After caring for my mom 24/7 and intensely…

Psalm 31:5 In God's Hands
Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O Lord God of truth. Psalm 31:5 Most people have something that they are committed to. They are dedicated to a job, a task, an activity, a person or something else that they will not turn away from. All of their focus, time, effort, money is is placed upon that one thing with no fear or concern outside of that one thing. They do not allow…

The Search for Significance: Yes, We Matter
Introduction In writing this blog each week, sometimes I feel like God is poking and prodding me to write about something I’d rather keep to myself. This is one of those weeks. But I figure if I resist God’s prodding, He might have a whale swallow me up like Jonah, then have it barf me up on the shores of Nineveh, and I’ll end up writing about this eventually anyway. Significance I’ve written…

God Inscribes Our Name
God Inscribes Our Name
I saw a friend write a phone number of someone on the palm of her hand. I’ve seen others write their grocery list on their hand. And, I remember when I was a kid in school, seeing some “cheaters” write the answers to test questions on the palms of their hands. I’ve been a fan of Max Lucado’s writings for years because he writes with a style that awakens my thought processes. Every time I read…
