Sineád O’Connor, the troubled Irish singer and activist who scored a global smash with Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” in 1990 and was banned from Saturday Night Live for tearing up a photo of Pope John Paul II during her performance two years later, has died at 56, according to a statement from her family provided to Irish TV and radio broadcaster RTÉ. No details on the cause, date or place of her death were given.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad,” the statement reads. “Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”
O’Connor was hospitalized in January 2022 after posting a series of disturbing, soon-deleted tweets in the wake of the suicide of her teenage son, Shane, that month. Her tweets hinted at suicidal thoughts. Shane O’Connor, 17, was found dead two days after he went missing from a treatment facility in Dublin.

Sineád O’Connor, who changed her name to Shuhada’ Sadaqat after converting to Islam in 2018 and was known for her closely cropped hair, was one of Ireland’s rising stars by age 20. She shot to fame with her haunting cover of “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which Prince wrote and recorded for his side project The Family. Her single hit No. 1 more than 20 countries — becoming the No. 1 single worldwide that year — and spent four weeks atop the Billboard 200 in 1990. The song’s was nominated for three Grammys including Record of the Year, and its stark video won three MTV VMAs including Video of the Year.
“Nothing Compares 2 U” was culled from her second album I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got, which was No. 1 in the U.S. for six weeks and has gone double platinum. It won a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance.
Despite the commercial juggernauts that were the single and album, O’Connor struggled to follow their success. She had only one minor hit in the U.S. after “Nothing Compares 2 U” and only a spotty chart history around the world despite releasing eight more studio albums. Her 1992 follow-up, Am I Not Your Girl?, reached the U.S. Top 10, and 1994’s Universal Mother hit No. 19, but neither would spawn a hit single. Her most recent was I’m Not Bossy, I’m the Boss in 2014.
Born on December 8, 1966, in Dublin, O’Connor courted controversy throughout her career. As the musical guest on Saturday Night Live in 1992, she sang a cover of Bob Marley’s “War” that shifted its lyrical focus to child abuse by the Catholic Church. When the song ended, O’Connor produced a photo of the popular Pope John Paul II and ripped it in half.
Reaction was swift in the pre-social media world, and the singer was banned from SNL permanently.
O’Connor is the subject of Nothing Compares, a feature documentary that had its world premiere at Sundance in 2022 and later aired on Showtime. Here is the logline of director Kathryn Ferguson’s film: The story of O’Connor’s phenomenal rise to worldwide fame and subsequent exile from the pop mainstream. Focusing on her prophetic words and deeds from 1987-93, the film reflects on the legacy of this fearless trailblazer through a contemporary feminist lens.
In an interview in the documentary, O’Connor revealed the abusive upbringing that left her feeling betrayed by both church and community and ultimately led her to find the therapeutic power of music.
She received the inaugural award for Classic Irish Album for I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got at the RTÉ Choice Music Awards in March.
O’Connor’s autobiography, Rememberings, was published in 2021 by Dey Street Books.

"ABCDEFU" (also known by its radio edited title "ABC") is the major-label debut single by American singer Gayle, through Atlantic and Arthouse Records. It was co-written by Gayle with Sara Davis and David Pittenger, and produced by Pete Nappi. The song is the lead single from Gayle's debut EP A Study of the Human Experience Volume One.
The song marks the first single release since the Nashville-based singer signed with Atlantic Records/Arthouse Records in 2021. On her TikTok account, Gayle uploaded a video where she stated "I'm out of [song] ideas" and asked followers to comment song ideas. "Comment anything and I'll try my best to turn it into a song." Nancy Berman, a marketing manager at Atlantic Records commented asking for a song that incorporates the alphabet. Within a few days, Gayle uploaded another video of her strumming the chorus of the song.
"ABCDEFU" reached number one on the Billboard Global 200 and peaked at number three on the US Billboard Hot 100. Outside of the United States, "ABCDEFU" topped the charts in Austria, Belgium (Wallonia), Finland, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
In 2022 the song was nominated for Song of the Year for the 65th Annual Grammy Awards.
According to Gayle, the song "came from a place of trying so hard to be the nice, respectful ex-girlfriend, to the point where it was negatively affecting me". In an interview with Tongue Tied Mag, Gayle explained the inspiration behind the song: "After the breakup, I was trying really, really hard to be a nice person—like, overcompensating for it—like, the week after we broke up, I called him and was, like, 'Hey, bud!' and 'What's up, my friend?!'" On March 31, 2021, Gayle stated on Instagram that she had dislocated her middle finger, and the X-ray scan from the hospital was used for the single's cover art.
The song achieved mainstream success within a few months after release, surpassing over 500 million global streams as of March 2022. Gayle has since released different versions of the song, including the demo, a "chill version", and an "angrier version".
The accompanying music video was released on August 13, 2021. The video was shot via a camcorder at a low resolution to evoke early 2000s home videos. In the music video, the singer and her friends visit and look around her ex's home.

BTS, also known as Bangatan Sonyeodan is the biggest boyband in the world (according to the economist.com) and debuted under the HYBE LABELS. They started from humble beginnings. They once begged people to go to their concerts and lived in a small dorm which did not fit all of them. But now all their concert tickets just get sold out at a blink of an eye. And their fans have been mentioning them paving the way of their life and the K-pop industry when it was at its worst. Their 40 million fans loved them because of their music which gives them inspiration, motivation and loving themselves is a must in the fandom. In Fact, they have released an album dedicated to loving yourself (Love Yourself: Answer) on the 24th of August, 2018.
BTS released their first Korean and Japanese-language studio albums, Dark & Wild and Wake Up respectively, in 2014. The group's second Korean studio album, Wings (2016), was their first to sell one million copies in South Korea.

Kim Seok Jin (Jin)

Jin is the hyung of BTS (the oldest). Meaning he has to take care of his younger members since they’re very far away from their family due to their training. His younger members were raised by him for more than a decade! And I do think that they were raised right by their Jin hyung with all their awards and recognitions they still have been very humble about it.
He is a songwriter and the vocalist of the group. Jin has co-written and released three solo tracks with BTS: "Awake" in 2016, "Epiphany" in 2018, and "Moon" in 2020, all of which have charted on South Korea's Gaon Digital Chart
For now, Jin is serving his country as a military personnel with Hoseok.
Min Yoongi (Suga)

The lead rapper of the group came from a financially unstable family in Daegu. But due to his hard work he is now part of the Biggest Boy Band in The World and the global ambassador for Valentino. He used to work as a delivery boy in his teenage years. While working as a delivery boy he had a major injury which caused him to have surgery. Jung Hoseok (J-hope)

The third hyung in the group. He is the ambassador of Louis Vuitton all because of his great fashion sense. Before debuting with BTS, J-Hope was part of an underground dance team called Neuron, and took dance classes at Gwangju Music Academy for six years, from fourth grade to his first year in high school when he signed with Big Hit Entertainment.[He was relatively well known for his dance skills, and won various local prizes, including first place in a national dance competition in 2008. 
In 2019, J-Hope released a free collaboration single, "Chicken Noodle Soup", featuring American singer Becky G, on September 27.The track debuted at number 81 on the Billboard Hot 100, making J-Hope the first member of BTS to chart on the Hot 100 as a solo artist, the third Korean solo artist to rank on the chart , and the sixth Korean artist overall to do so. "Chicken Noodle Soup" also became J-Hope's second song to debut at number one on the World Digital Song Sales chart. And now, he is currently serving Korea as a soldier.
Kim Namjoon (RM)

RM, is the leader and the main rapper of the group. He is called the Backbone of K-pop, since he was the main reason why it was popular and why the group BTS exists which contributed a lot to the Korean economy. Namjoon, is the only BTS member to be fluent in english which is a big help to them when they go to foreign countries. As a child, RM largely learned English by watching the American sitcom Friends with his mother. As a student, he actively wrote poetry and often received awards for his writing. He posted his work to an online poetry website for roughly one year, where he received moderate attention. He also has an iq of 148. 
RM is the youngest and second most-credited songwriter in the association's history. With 213 songs attributed to his name as a songwriter and composer by the Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA), as of April 2023.
Park Jimin (Jimin)

Jimin’s passion for dancing started at an early age. When he was in high school he learned contemporary dancing as a top student from Busan High School of Arts. Seeing his talent, one of his teachers suggested that he should audition for an entertainment company. With his talent, he successfully made it to Bighit. And now he has a networth of $8 million plus his collaboration with Dior which is $17 million. And a little fun fact is that Jimin is always teased by his younger member Jungkook because of his height. (174 cm)
Jimin's vocals have been described as delicate and sweet. He is regarded as an exceptional dancer among the members of BTS and in K-pop in general, often praised for his "smooth and elegant movements" and charm on stage. In the documentary Burn the Stage, Jimin addressed his perfectionism, stating that even the smallest mistakes on stage make him feel guilty and stressed.
Kim Taehyung (V)

V, also known as Taehyung, first aspired to be a professional singer in elementary school. With his father's support, he began taking saxophone lessons in early middle school as a means of pursuing a musical career. V eventually became a trainee for Big Hit Entertainment after passing an audition in Daegu. He never actually intended to audition, he was just there to support his friend but I guess he was too good.  
Jeon Jungkook (JK)

The moment Jungkook saw Namjoon’s audition video for Bighit he knew he had to join. Jungkook is said to be Namjoon’s #1 Fan and joined the auditions because of him. Jungkook is the maknae of the group meaning he is the youngest and left his home for his dreams to become a superstar. And with that he now has an astonishing net worth of 20 million US dollars and is the ambassador of Calvin Klein.

Alok and Steve Aoki first collaborated in 2020 producing “Do It Again.” The single paid homage to The Chemical Brothers’ track of the same name, utilizing heavy bass and high-octane percussion to transform it to an anthem for ravers. Following the success of “Do It Again” in 2021, the two collaborated once again producing “Typical” featuring Swedish-LA songwriter Lars Martin. This single allowed the two artists to incorporate their own personal styles into the music.
In 2022, Aoki released several singles including “Welcome to the Playhouse” featuring  former basketball player-turned-DJ, Shaquille O’Neal and “Da Homies” featuring musical artist MT11. We are honoured to be able to present playwright, performer, and CBC radio host, Tetsuro Shigematsu who will share his story of creativity through the lens of this month’s global theme ‘acceptance’.

A former writer for This Hour Has 22 Minutes, Tetsuro’s theatrical solo-work Empire of the Son was named the best show of 2015 by the Vancouver Sun, and was described by theatre critic Colin Thomas describes it as, “one of the best shows ever to come out of Vancouver. Ever.” His other solo-work, 1 Hour Photo was named as a finalist for the 2019Governor General’s Award for Drama, and was the co-winner of the Holden Street Theatres’ Edinburgh Fringe Award, 2021. The Vancouver’s Georgia Straight declared him to be, “one of the city’s best artists.” In 2018, he earned his PhD in Arts-Based Research from the University of British Columbia, and now serves as Creative Director of the Research-based Theatre Lab.
As usual, we asked Tetsuro a handful of probing questions to give us a deeper glimpse into her life and relationship with creativity:
How do you define creativity and apply it in your life and career? What iridescent feathers are to peacocks, creativity is to humans, a reliable indicator of genetic fitness. It’s a costly signal to fake. In other words, I think talent is sexy. For me, something that I’ve begun to realize is that autobiographical solo theatre works can function as metaphysical pageant shows. Creativity is the ability to create work that is smarter than yourself. There’s two ways of doing this. Plumb the depths of your subconscious and work intuitively. Secondly, work with people who are smarter and more talented than you, and listen closely to what they have to say. The best work is often the result of collaboration. Thesis, antithesis, synthesis.
Where do you find your best creative inspiration or energy? In the bathroom, either while getting clean or getting dirty.
What’s one piece of creative advice or a tip you wish you’d known as a young person? If I had a chance to meet my younger self, I wouldn’t say anything, because it’s been a pretty meaningful journey so far. I’d like to listen though. I’d ask, “So? What do you think? Are you excited to become me? Or are you disappointed?”
Who (living or dead) would you most enjoy hearing speak at CreativeMornings? I once read that Shakira and Gabriel Garcia Marquez used to hang out while he was still alive. Even if they spoke of banal minutiae of everyday life, I’m sure it would have been fascinating.
What did you learn from your most memorable creative failure? When my marriage of 25 years came to an abrupt end, I realized that the health of my relationships is directly correlated to my willingness to have uncomfortable conversations.
What’s your one guilty creative indulgence? Scrolling endlessly through the FaceBook group Midjourney, a forum for AI-generated art work.
What fact about you would surprise people? I was a child preacher. Also, I fly a great deal. Whenever I experience severe turbulence on a flight, I never get nervous because I often think, “I’ve lived a good life. Things have never been better. So maybe it’s not a bad time to die.”
How does your life and career compare to what you envisioned for your future when you were a sixth grader? When I was in grade school, I saw myself wearing a top hat and tails, dancing like Fred Astaire. Picture an Asian boy with a bowl cut doing that. You would never know it to look at me today, but what I do is not far off.
How would you describe what you do in a single sentence to a stranger? I travel the world telling stories about my life.
If you could open a door and go anywhere, where would that be? I believe humankind will be around far longer than most people think. I would like to visit the final epoch of human existence, say the final 10 years.
What keeps you awake at night? Nothing keeps me awake at night. I am preternaturally worry-free. I asked my therapist friend if my condition could be pathologized. She said no. No state of mind that enables equanimity and independence could be considered a condition.
What myths about creativity would you like to set straight? To be a “real” artist, you need to be doing it full time. You can’t have a day job. My favourite example is the poet Wallace Stevens who sold insurance.
If you could do anything now, what would you do? Become an astronaut.
Where is your favourite place to escape? Going fast on my e-bike.
What was the best advice you were ever given? “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” - Maya Angelou
What books made a difference in your life and why? Something Like an Autobiography by Akira Kurosawa. He recommends to study all the art forms that make up a medium, rather than just the medium itself.
What practises, rituals, or habits contribute to your creative work? I have a walking treadmill beneath my standing desk. Nietzsche said there are no great thoughts that happen outside of walks. On a good day, I’ll walk over half a marathon.
If you had fifteen extra minutes each day, what would you do with them? Have sex, meditate, and workout all at once, but I’m not sure if that form of yoga exists?
What object would you put in a time capsule that best represents who you are today? My standing desk with my walking treadmill, multiple monitors, and multiple keyboards, and multiple computers is such an ugly monstrosity, it’s beautiful.
What is the one movie or book every creative must see/read? Impro by Keith Jonstone.

Altan are an Irish folk music band formed in County Donegal in 1987 by lead vocalist Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh and her husband Frankie Kennedy. The group were primarily influenced by traditional Irish language songs from Donegal and have sold over a million records.
The group were the first traditional Irish group to be signed to a major label when they signed with Virgin Records in 1994. The group has collaborated with Dolly Parton, Enya, The Chieftains, Bonnie Raitt, Alison Krauss, and many others.

Earlier this year, I wanted to learn more about Irish dance. I contacted one of the co-founders of Atlanta Irish Dance by Burke and Connolly. Emma Burke is a certified Irish dance teacher and internationally certified Irish dance adjudicator, which allows her to judge Irish dance competitions world wide. During her Irish dancing career, she competed all over the world, winning titles throughout.
Atlanta Irish Dance is the Premiere Irish Dance Academy in Georgia and one of the top Irish Dance Companies in the United States. They have an exciting performance based program run through their 501c3, in which they produce lively crowd-pleasing performances for crowds across Atlanta.  Their dancers and teams are ranked 1st in the Region, 2nd in North America, and among the top 10 in the World.

Marc Gunn is a Rhythm & Folk songwriter who fuses Irish and Scottish folk songs with pop culture. One brewery called it Sci F’Irish music. His musical weapon of choice is the autoharp. He breathes acoustic Rock and Roll into this folk instrument and adds a bellowing taste of rhythm & blues.
Gunn found musical inspiration performing Irish drinking songs. He learned the art of performing at Renaissance faires and from his childhood idol, Elvis Presley, who said, “You've got to put on a show to draw a crowd.” His concerts are fun filled with sing along songs that get the audience's feet tapping.
And now for my song…
I first heard the song “Peggy Gordon” from a cassette of Irish Drinking Songs I found at Half-Price Books in Austin, Texas. I learned most of my early Irish song repertoire from that album, songs like “Whiskey in the Jar”, “Big Strong Man, “Wild Rover”, “Bog Down in the Valley” and lots more.
Their version of “Peggy Gordon” was short, but memorable. I played it on and off for many years. I remember singing it at a pub in Switzerland when I met Heidi and Stef of the Celtic band Bow Triplets.
In July 2009, I met my future wife, Gwen, while touring in Virginia. We had this whirlwind romance and began talking on the phone every day and went to see each other as much as possible even while I was out on tour. I was completely mesmerized by her.
A few weeks later, I was back in Austin. I was scheduled to record my next studio album with Rich Brotherton. He’s an incredible engineer and had done some brilliant work for Ed Miller and lots of top-notch artists in Texas.
I was having trouble singing the song. I was pitchy and my voice lacked any real emotion. The lyrics have this great feeling of love and longing. Which is exactly the feeling I was having with Gwen so far away. And so… I closed my eyes, focused on Gwen, and sang.
To this day, I still tell people it is one of my best recordings. Because I feel like I nailed it. And then to top it off, Rich Brotherton added some absolutely beautiful guitar work, as he did throughout that album. It is definitely one of my warmest and lushest and best-produced albums.

A year ago Russia launched the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives. Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine the fund has been giving out multi-million-ruble grants for films, books, music festivals, and educational programs on the condition that their creators support the Russian invasion of Ukraine and intend their work to help “integrate” residents of the self-proclaimed Donbas republics into the “Russian world.” Meduza explains who is applying for grants and which ideas have already been approved.
The Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives was established in May 2021, on Vladimir Putin’s orders, for “support of projects in the sphere of culture, art, and creative industries.” Under the leadership of general director Roman Karmanov the fund issues grants for patriotic exhibits, concerts, festivals, plays, and books.
Karmanov has worked with the Komsomolskaya Pravda media group since the 2000s, initially as the first deputy general director, and later as the general director of the company’s radio station. Judging by information from the DaDobro corporate volunteer center, whose board of trustees he sits on, Karmanov has received personal thanks for his work from Vladimir Putin, Moscow mayor Sergey Sobyanin, and the head of the internal political block of the presidential administration Sergey Kiriyenko.
Kiriyenko also sits on the Presidential Fund’s coordinating committee, which includes 27 other people. Among them are Mikhail Piotrovsky, director of the Hermitage; Bishop Tikhon, often called Vladimir Putin’s confessor; Konstantin Ernst, the general director of Channel One; Alexander Zharov and Oleg Dobrodeyev, directors of Gazprom Media Holding and the All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company (VGTRK); Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova; Deputy Minister of Science Elena Druzhinina; and Elena Bunin, the former general director of Yandex, who left the company due to her anti-war position. Also on the committee was Vladimir Gabrielyan, the first deputy general director of Russian media giant VK, who was killed in June of this year in the Nenets Autonomous Region. All board members develop strategies by which the fund disperses grants: choosing winners, allocating award amounts, and ensuring a “level playing field” for applicants.
Aside from the coordinating committee the fund has an expert council, comprised of 28 people. Among them are museum directors, actors, theater critics, composers, and writers.
Both private companies and public societies from all over Russian can submit grant applications. The Fund offers eight themes, which focus on Russia’s “global competitive advantage” and include topics such as “The Place of Power,” “Nation of Creators,” and “The Great Russian Word.” Projects types range from education to fine art to startups. In addition to four regularly scheduled contests per year, there are special contests on themes like “the popularization and preservation of all-Russian cultural identity, counteracting the cancel culture phenomenon.” These support a Russian propaganda agenda that responds to sanctions imposed on the Russian Federation following its invasion of Ukraine. According to the Fund, the contests are necessary to “strengthen traditional Russian spiritual and moral values.”
