My stepdad bought like 300 domestic rodents of various species to live in our house and I was worried about accidentally crushing them while petting them.

Unfortunately I had to bury Bilbo (the mouse) today. He started showing signs of being sick yesterday morning and although we had a vet visit the same afternoon he passed away during the night :(
For Scavenger Hunt #26, “Show us your pet working for MI6.”
Many people know by now that there have been successful pilot projects where rats have been trained to detect and identify landmines, but Q Branch has ambitions of expanding the program to include some new members: explosive-sniffing gerbils! The pocket pets could easily tag along undetected on missions, and have the advantage of also being imminently trainable (like 007, they’re very treat-motivated) and inherently adorable (also like 007, but don’t tell him that). Q just has to keep them far away from his cats.
Meet MI6’s newest agents, 00Squeaks and 00Fur! When not in the field, they like to accompany Q during his day-to-day tasks. Today’s goal: find a way to train 00Squeaks and 00Fur to find discarded Q Branch tech the less-responsible 00s leave behind. Maybe if there were a way to make all the gear smell like pumpkin seeds… 🤔
I had switched them to a fancy food because that's what the pet store had. (Not muesli mix but biscuits and seeds) Their fur got spikey and looked almost oily. I figured that was not a sign of good gerbil health. So, i switched them back to the budget Walmart brand.
They are once again possessing soft fur coats and squabbling over who gets to use the wheel. (I have tried getting them two wheels, apparently the squabbling is part of the fun.)
This style of wheel is often pooh-pooh because "Tails and claws get caught!" .. i can't speak of their claws, maybe it does super rarely happen, but I've yet to meet a gerbil who isn't very tail aware. They love it and so far they haven't managed to damage it in any way. So, I'll let them be happy.
John and Smith would like to remind you they only get pumpkin seed treats ONCE a day and they're terribly abused. Just like your pets, who should also get more treats.
