A similar list of questions for writing gay/bi/pan male characters:

Do the characters reproduce heteronormative stereotypes (e.g., the man who bottoms is smaller, more submissive, more sensitive/emotional)?

When writing a mixed-race couple, do I default to the MOC (or man with darker skin) being the sexual aggressor and/or top?

Are there personality traits I assign to them because they are gay/bi/pan?

Are they more sexually suggestive or aggressive than their straight counterparts?

Do they exist primarily to be the Gay Best Friend/cheerleader for other (likely female) characters?

Is their role primarily to help other people figure out their own sexuality/gender/life?

Does the character exist primarily to prove another character's tolerance and/or their bigotry?

Fan: A lot of people were taken aback by Renly and Loras’ relationship (in the show), I guess they weren’t necessarily picking up on the subtle hints present in the series… Do you ever wonder what the fan reaction would’ve been had you written a more explicit scene in the books?

George: I don't know… I do like to do certain things subtly. I think subtlety is a virtue. [...] Neither Renly nor Loras is a viewpoint character, and since I'm following a very strict structure of seeing everything only through the eyes of the viewpoint characters, there was really no way to present explicit details of their relationship without having someone walk in on them, which, I suppose, I could have done, but is a clumsy technique… A television show, on the other hand, is a very different animal and doesn't have the same restrictions. The camera is your viewpoint, and it can be pointed on any character, it doesn't necessarily have to just follow your six or seven designated viewpoint characters.

thank you once again to @kenobiwanx for bringing my OCs to life, you are an amazing artist and i appreciate you so much! they are absolutely perfect, and im so thrilled 🥺 i commissioned gio to paint my three star wars OCs, from left to right: Pantoran Montana "Champagne" Varis, Twi'lek Mimi Mirage and Dathomirian Zabrak Vikktor Wrath! These three rock the Coruscant night scene as Mimi grinds live shows and bar work to make it topside as a performer. Montana helps her secure gigs with her girl boss business skills and clothing designer Vikktor creates custom looks for her. I've had so much fun exploring pop culture in the Star Wars universe through these three. Fun fact: Montana is bi, Mimi is a lesbian and Vikktor is gay. Space pride! 🏳️‍🌈

Shadow and Bone is such an important show for representation, making people of many types feel seen and like they too could fit in a fantasy setting. For example, nuanced South Asian and East Asian representation that's important to both the actors and the fans. Multiple disabled characters where their disability is only one part of them. Queer characters where their queerness isn't used for tragedy + a rare setting free of homophobia. That's just what I can think of off the top of my head, there's other rep too I'm sure. Also, see this article on queer representation in fantasy for a quote by one of the actors, Jack Wolfe, about how he felt to have a queer role on such a show. Of course, as with many shows including diversity, Netflix cancelled it despite the data showing it was doing well. But we don't want to accept that, we want our rep back! So if you're reading this and haven't seen the show, please please consider signing to help us out (and/or watching the show, new viewers show demand for it to Netflix). We're at nearly 187,000 signatures so far and trying to get to 200,000 signatures this month, ideally by the time the billboard our fandom fundraised for goes up on January 22nd. We want to send a message to Netflix that shows like this are wanted, that they matter to people, and that we won't simply accept cancellation after cancellation of diverse shows

Can't stop to think about my tragic gays but damned it's so tragic that Ouyang and Esen could be intimate only just in death. They desired so much to be closer in life but can't help to resist at that attraction and even sabotage it. Only death could let them to embrace each other finally. First when Esen was dying (and here we also have "stabbing as metaphor for love??" trope) and in the end when Zhu would fulfill her promise and bury Ouyang together with Esen. In death they will finally rest in peace and be together.
