Secrets of the Machine (Bendysplaining)
(Full disclosure: both of the computers I have access to WILL NOT TRIGGER THE LIGHTNING CUTSCENE therefore making B:SOTM unplayable for me! Watched a couple walkthroughs to get the gist of things. I found ONE easter egg on my own lol.)
Secrets of the Machine is so out of place to me, seeming almost unpolished. I'll give it a fair shake and go over the pros and cons, but if you want a short Bendy game to play, PLEASE play Boris and the Dark Survival, not this.
Pros:
This very important bird that makes me well up inside with a positive emotion.
Tumblr media
Ragtime Guffie. Cute character that I feel has a charm similar to the original Bendy cast. I wouldn't have been surprised to see this guy walking around in BATIM back in the day.
Tumblr media
This screenshot I can use for memes:
Tumblr media
This ONE scene/"jumpscare" was executed well:
Tumblr media
The Goofy ahh can dispenser laugh
Tumblr media
My personal favorite, this random ass arrow outside that you can follow into the darkness for about a minute until you're spat back out by the entrance arch (useless):
Tumblr media
And last but not least, the inclusion of Gaskette and an insanely niche nod to Nightmare Run?
FIrst off, Gaskette looks killer (pun intended):
Tumblr media
And secondly, there are at least a couple hands around the map that open and close when you click them in a very similar fashion to a hand that could be found on the menu of Nightmare Run. I was actually excited about this! (Why they didn't they just go full ham with the Nightmare Run characters for this game?)
Tumblr media
Cons:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first glaring issue I have is *checks watch* the FOUR Bendy advertisements thrown into the game??? What???
I'm not mad about hyping people up, but it is............LAZY?? What was the point of this? These ALL could've been Tweets!!
In fact, Lone Wolf's Announcement nearly WAS a Tweet!!
Tumblr media
I would feel differently if the presentation was better, but you literally throw a can at some flippable....plates(?) around a screen at random and get still images. I understand that this game is meant to be small like BATDS, but BATDS was more polished, more fun, and didn't throw four adverts in as gameplay/easter eggs.
This is also gives me a Bad Feeling because if you're willing to make your smaller content into a glorified advertisement, what are you going to do with your mainline games? How are you going to treat your content? Are you going to let things cook or serve it to us raw?
ALSO...
Riley.
Riley's story itself is fine. Not amazing, not awful. Riley's parents die in a car accident when she's six. She starts drawing disturbing content, and the school counselor catches wind of this and brings it up to her guardian. Riley goes to work for JDS at the same age as Buddy (17), and is subsequently fired for drawing more disturbing material pertaining to the accident.
Tumblr media
While it sounds cliché, the way it was presented in-game was fine. There are obviously things that could be improved, but the point here isn't the story itself.
Let me ask the audience of this post a question.
Where the hell is Lacie Benton?
Or, more broadly, why aren't M+M fleshing out characters that have been with us since *checks watch* 2017?
I'm struggling not to start doing the Macarena, because adding new characters and slowly abandoning the old ones works in direct contrast with "caring about the lore", AKA what this franchise was built on, and it's something M+M like to bring up. When you remove that backbone, everything else falls apart. When you neglect the old characters, you're neglecting the heart of the franchise.
Riley having her story isolated to one game seems to be a blessing in disguise, I'll admit. However, this is ALL just BATIM: Red Flags. Disappointed, but not surprised. Scared for the future of this franchise, but trying to stay optimistic.

Bendy: Secrets of the Machine Thoughts
Putting them under a spoiler cut for readability
So far, there is a lot of intrigue regarding GENT and their role, as well as the potential return of the Nightmare Run characters.
GENT's involvement so far as been more on the sidelines in the games. It's implied they have similar issues with the supernatural, and they are running experiments with the ink the Machine produces, the books also backing this up with the reappearance of Archie Carter. However, with the new character. Riley Wells, introduced, it creates a more interesting layer to this, in that it is implied that she was recruited by GENT shortly following her dismissal from JDS. Now, if she is a villain or a victim is up for debate. It could be that they hired her as a test subject similar to Archie Carter and her metamorphosis was just far more severe as a result of the traumatic experience in her childhood, or perhaps she provided the specs that ended up producing a real-life version of "Bloodwheel", the more monster-y version of Gaskette that even gets a whole song in Riley's flashback.
Riley's story is also interesting in that it provides a canon explanation for why the Nightmare Run toons are more monstrous, though it really only does so for Gaskette. She's never shown drawing any of the other bosses, just him. Which makes me wonder if maybe she was part of the character design for only him, and the others are all going to get their own stories later on in the game. I really do hope they go this route, mostly because it would be a nice callback to the no longer available Nightmare Run, and you could have some real fun with the bosses 'backstories', depending on how involved you want to be.
Can think of a few things immediately off the bat: Chester being another example of a childhood fear turned into a debilitating trauma, except involving someone who has thalassophobia strong enough to rival H.P. Lovecraft. Kind of paves the way for a lot of spooky imagery involving the ocean, ocean life, and ink.
Dewey at first seemed a little comical to think about in this context, after all, a fear of librarians seems extreme, though thinking more on it my thought is that he's the product of a different type of emotional stuckage. Instead of a fearful person, perhaps Dewey was created by a very angry person, someone who had a lot of trouble controlling their temper and would frequently blow up at seemingly minor issues. After all, Dewey's main character trait seems to be his temper, as we remember from his character card that he has a disproportionate reaction to Bendy knocking over some books. Granted, between the fact that the exact quantity of books is never mentioned, and a cartoon being a cartoon, it makes me wonder if Bendy might not have knocked over a few books, but more likely a few stacks or even whole shelves worth. I mean, what's funnier, a few books coming down or the library getting a spontaneous remodeling job thanks to a careless patron?
...It's probably not so fun for the librarian, but you get my point. So, potentially, we have someone who has a temper problem creating this character as a way to offset their issues. It might just be less helpful and creating a bit of a feedback loop, where they're constantly ruminating over their problems rather than addressing and moving on from them.
Canoodle was another one that eluded me a bit, though there are two potential driving forces that could have fueled his creation. On one front, junkyards aren't exactly friendly places sometimes, and it would be easy for some sort of accident to happen that could produce some sort of negative association, though there is also the fact that a sentient can being in a junkyard creates this almost weird mental image. You'd think that'd be a dangerous place for him, and this is somewhat proven true if you beat him in Nightmare Run, as he's promptly crushed and disposed of. So, perhaps a preoccupation with death, or a person who is constantly cheating bad or dangerous circumstances? It's something, and it could definitely be interesting played out if that's the direction they're planning on going with this.
There are also plenty of other fun moments and little easter eggs for fans, so either way, we do get something fun. I would honestly be over the moon if they did something for all of the Nightmare Run toons though. Gaskette is a good nod, and Riley's backstory intrigues me given the circumstances, and especially the apparent involvement with GENT. Kinda makes me wonder if they're, in a sense, keeping tabs on people who were associated with JDS, people who maybe would have some stronger ties to the art being produced there and potentially have a bigger reaction when the ink is used on them.
It's something to think about, for sure. If anything, I'll enjoy using these puzzle pieces in my own work.

Fun fact: Bertrum and Gaskette are the only two gluttony inked creatures that are Techno-Organic. Bertrum's a Cyborg like Kraken, and Gaskette's a vehicle that can eat anything and make dairy products like a cow.

Personal headcanons on bendy in nightmare run characters?
Chester:
-His method for hunting ships involves waiting on a deserted island, keeping his tentacles hidden and waiting for the ship to get close enough and the pirates to get on shore, once they are, Chester springs into the air and onto the ship, breaking it and eating the valuables inside while also leaving the pirates stranded on the island so they can't warn others about him.
-If someone were to cut off his tentacles in an attempt to eat them, they would taste like rubber.
-He cannot digest treasure, but eating gold and jewels helps him digest things that his stomach cannot break down naturally. The sharply cut treasures breaks food down while the soft gold cushions his insides. Gaskette:
-Before getting a job as a taxi, he was a... 'hearse' for the most part. He transported the dead to their final resting places so to speak, but not exactly in a typical or legal manner.
-He's VERY STRICT about you not eating in him while he takes you to your destination. Also, if you're drunk or sick, he will provide a paper bag for you to throw up in, but if you miss, you gotta pay him extra. While some might grumble about him being a neat freak, he'll be more than 'happy' to remind people that they'd do the same if it was their body.
-After a hard and stressful day's work, he'll unwind with some donuts. Both the sweet treat and the act of spinning around in small tight circles.
Canoodle:
-Used to work at a soup cannery before he got into an incident involving a giant can opener which really sent his life into a downward spiral; his soup went bad, his lid got dented up, and his label got lost in the scuffle.
-Thankfully, his life's stabilizing now, working in the Junkyard might not be the most glamorous job, but it's peaceful for the most part and it pays well which is what he needs to get him in a good place.
-He only eats things that come out of cans. Specifically, he eats their cans too. It's a great way to get iron for him.
Dewey:
-Lives in the library and rarely speaks unless spoken to. When spoken to, he never shuts up, but does keep his voice at an appropriate volume for a library.
-He likes to draw and write his own books at home to keep his ink from overflowing, over the years of writing, the library at his own home dwarfs the one he works at. (However, every single one of the books he's written is obnoxiously verbose)
-He loves fireworks, just not at his job.

QUOTE COMPILATION⁉️
Gwen: When will Ted himself...finally show up to the talk?
Chester: The final boss.
Gaskette: You guys know TEDtalks stands for technology, entertainment, and design talks, right?
Gwen: I will not let Ted hide behind these lies any longer!
Dewey: You sound like the start of a Batman villain.
Gwen: I’ve become a bread crumb dealer to four crows at the lake. They pay me with a bit of everything. Like shiny things, fabric, or pens. But recently they paid me with a 20 dollar bill they found somewhere. So I decided to buy them some more expensive bread. They loved it. So they understand what to do. Give me money. I’ve probably racked up about 200 dollars at this point. Is it morally wrong though, I mean. They’re the ones who steal the money from others. Or perhaps they just have a big pile laying somewhere. Should I keep on doing this?
Dewey: Is that a gun?!
Canoodle: It's not what it looks like!
Dewey: It looks like a gun!
Canoodle: Okay, maybe it is what it looks like, but in my defense, it doesn't have anymore bullets, so I technically can't shoot it anymore.
Dewey: ...ANYMORE?!
Chester: You really believe in Krawl ?
Stickle: Luckily, they believe in themself enough for the both of us.
Stickle: What is the one thing I told you not to do?
Gwen: Burn the house down.
Stickle: And what did you do?
Gwen: I made dinner.
Stickle:
Gwen:
Stickle:
Gwen: And burnt the house down.
Gwen: I just drank a lego piece.
Gaskette: ...what the hell?! You melted plastic and drank the liquid?
Gwen: Yes.
Gaskette: Why did you even melt a lego in the first place?!
Gwen: Because it looked like chocolate! So I drank it! You know, like a chocolate shake?
Canoodle: Your lover doesn't have the mental strength to caramelize onions.
Gwen: Your lover thinks it takes 5-10 minutes to caramelize onions.
Krawl: Who's fucking caramelizing onions? Have you sociopaths forgotten that apples exist?
Gaskette: Do you think caramelizing onions is putting caramel on onions.
Stickle: What’s your favorite high school memory?
Dewey: LEAVING. FUCKING LEAVING!
Kidnapper: I have your partner.
Stickle: What? I don't have a partner...
Kidnapper: Then who just called me a lowlife bitch and spit in my face?
Stickle: Oh my god, you have Gwen.

oopsie
so the stream was a flop (ill need to solve that problem in the future but that was very weird cuz these settings worked with batdr before and i doubt batdr was easier to stream performance wise) but yall didnt miss out on anything cuz uh
basically in 15 minutes i was done with the part of the. "game". that was. actually kind of looking like one. you know i didn't expect any polish to this, it was free and all. that was the part with gaskette, it was. fine. i did not find it interesting but at least it wasnt what the rest of the game was
but you know what, i get it. finally i get it
they, or maybe just mike, but its released under their company so i will say they,
they hate theorists
they hate dataminers
alright, point taken, i guess
just push away the fans who were the most interested in playing your games, cuz that's smart
it's sad really but oh well have it your way

If anyone knows where and when the hell this pin was sold I'd like to know the history! My GUESS is that it was sold at Hot Topic in 2018 after Nightmare Run came out, but I haven't found any info or even the set it was a part of.
I snagged it off Mercari because it wasn't too expensive and I'd never seen it before in my life. Turns out he's double layered (meaning Gaskette sticks out from the background) and the pin is absolutely beautiful and has a nice weight to it.
(I like Gaskette the most of the four NR bosses so I guess fate was on my side!)

3, 12, and/or 17 for the Nightmare Run antagonists. I dunno who to actually specify because I love them all, so you can choose who it is lol-
You. I appreciate you! Thank you SO MUCH for sending this in! I am currently in the middle of a TON of theorizing about BINR and have been revisiting it, and now I have an excuse to share my Canoodle headcanon, it is a GOOD DAY!
3. Obscure headcanon
Canoodle the bacon soup can is alive because he's filled with radioactive material. In the Crack-Up Comics, we get Souper Boris, a story where Boris eats some radioactive bacon soup and gains superpowers from it. The end of the comic implies that there's more of that soup out there when Alice picks up a can of it at the grocer. I firmly believe that Canoodle was one a can of that soup that went past his expiration date, and when he ended up in the dump, he eventually became MASSIVE and claimed it as his turf. It's both his grave (it's referred to as a graveyard in the advertising for this game which is SUPER STRANGE) in that it's where he was sent to die and his home, and it's morbid and awful and AAHH I LOVE IT! (Also throughout the level he throws barrels of radioactive waste at us which is great.)
12. Crack headcanon
Dewey or Gaskette would work very well as a toon persona for Grant Cohen. No I will not be taking criticism. (For real though I've absolutely used Dewey as a stand-in for Grant before, shameless plug for the latest chapter of Searching the Depths if you haven't already read it.)
17. Quotes, songs, poems, etc. that I associate with them
Y'know I can't say I have any of these off the top of my head. So I'm gonna go to my playlist and hit shuffle until something hits me.
...which may not have been a great idea given most of my playlist is videogame music, ballet and musical soundtracks, and Bendy nerdcore. Heck. Actually wait, you know what? Almost Dead from Shadow the Hedgehog is a GREAT Canoodle song, it goes perfectly with the thing I mentioned earlier. Also, because Dewey is my favorite, I wanna see him secretly have a side that likes stuff like Whipped into Shape from Legally Blonde. That'd be fun.
Thank you for the ask!
