Snapchat dysmorphia is a term coined by British physician known for performing cosmetic procedures after he noticed an increase in number of patients who were bringing heavily edited selfies to their cosmetic doctors hoping to look like these in reality (Wigmore, 2019). According to statistics from the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery showed that 42% of surgeons reported that their patient are wanting aesthetic surgeries to improve their appearances on Instagram, TikTok and other social media platforms. Instagram has become a prominent platform for business marketing to young adults and its usage in plastic surgery continues to increase. As of 2016, Instagram reported over 400 million monthly active users with more than 80 million photos uploaded on this platform per day (Dorfman, Vaca, Mahmood, Fine & Schierle, 2018). This brings us to another topic that was covered in this week is micro celebrity. Terri Senft coined the term micro celebrity in her book Camgirls: Celebrity and Community in the Age of Social Networks to explain the practices and methods used by celebrities to increase their popularity and fandom among viewers by using technology like webcam, blogs and social networks. They label their viewers as fans and strategically reveal their everyday life through posts, videos and using aesthetic templates like poses, accessories and enhancing features like lips, waist and glutes in a way to attract more views and fan following (Graham, 2017).

Ever since the rise of influence of social media specially on teenagers has created insecurities. Young girls are insecure not only about their looks but physical appearance too. This insecurity led to the development of body dysmorphia among young adults both male and female. Body dysmorphia disorder is a psychiatric illness characterised by the obsessive thoughts about one’s body being flawed followed by constant comparison and mirror gazing. According to a study done in 2019 revealed that BDD affects about 2.4% of the population and usually starts in adolescent age groups (Himanshu, Kaur, Singla & Kaur, 2020).

Keeping a handful benefits of social media aside, too much exposure of social media specially by teenagers is a matter of concern and some initiatives should be taken. Instead of sharing and glorifying plastic surgeries of patients on social media platforms, plastic surgeons should taken into consideration of educating their viewers and can opt for marketing at the same time when done tactfully. Social media influencers can also play an essential role in controlling the spread of unhealthy body image and unattainable beauty standards. Racist Clothing Brands + Black Brands to Buy From Instead:

Chanel

Gucci

Dior's most recent fragrance campaign came under fire for racist undertones but a Black Hollywood stylist also gave BET.com an account of an incident that she had with a brand. The stylist requests to remain anonymous says, "they compromised our creative relationship by not following through on requests and instead loaning looks that were promised to me to white actors instead."

Celine

Celine's branding is notoriously extremely thin and extremely white. A quick scroll of their social media will reveal exactly their opinion on Black lives.

Barney’s 

Before going bankrupt, Barney's had to pay out a settlement in a racial discrimination case of $525k to two plantiffs. 

Moda Operandi

A former employee of the company released this thread on Moda Operandi, citing several micro aggressions she suffered there. 

Burberry

Burberry issued an apology after releasing a sweater featuring a noose motif.

Tommy Hilfiger

In 1996, Tommy Hilfiger famously made comments against the Black community and has since clarified what he meant, but the hurt in the community lingers. 

Moschino 

Managers discriminated against black customers who did not appear to be rich or famous.

“If a potential black client was not a celebrity and did not have an outward appearance of money via diamonds or name brands, defendant [Ranna] Selbak called them a ‘Serena’ to other sales associates and wanted the ‘Serena’ to be closely watched,” according to the complaint.

Versace

A former male Versace employee sued Versace for allegedly firing him after his manager realized he was Black.

Zara

Zara was accused of using racial code words for black and Latinx customers. The Center for Popular Democracy surveyed 251 Zara employees in New York City about the retailer’s practices. Poll respondents said that when the term “special order” was used at the store, employees were to find the location of the shoppers in question and follow them around. Black customers were most often described as “special orders,” according to the survey results.

Reformation 

They were criticised for their internal practices by a black former employee, Elle Santiago. Santiago said she was denied work promotions in favor of white colleagues, as well as being ignored by the company founder, Yael Aflalo, because of her race.

“Being overlooked and undervalued as a woman of color who worked and managed their flagship store for three years was the hardest,” Santiago wrote in an Instagram post picked up by industry watchdog Diet Prada. “I cried many times knowing [that] the color of my skin would get me nowhere in the company.” 

Urban Outfitters

“As one of very few PoC [people of color] I quickly noticed the toxic environment I’d joined,” says the former employee, who wishes to remain anonymous. “Within my first month my manager made a flippant racist comment in regards to an Uber I’d called; the driver’s name was Muhammad. Her comment was, ‘You would get a Muhammad’ – in what I can only take as a comment made because of my heritage.

“There’s no PoC in the executive team and very little representation of PoC in head office, on the website, marketing campaigns and within the retail management teams.”

The company has a history of producing offensive items of clothing, including a seemingly blood-spattered T-shirt seen as a reference to the 1970 Kent State shootings; a T-shirt in a color named “Obama/Black”; another featuring a six-pointed badge, which seemed to allude to the Star of David badge that Jewish people were forced to wear during the Holocaust; and a racially insensitive Navajo line which used the Navajo nation name illegally.

Nick Graham wants to be able to turn his sweaters into pants, his pants into shoes and his shoes into accessories. The bottom line, he wants his newest collection to have an after-life rather than in landfills, where 80 percent of all apparel ends up.

With the debut of his new sportswear collection “Nick Graham re.fresh” to be rolled out in fall 2020, Graham is exploring new ways into how the company can sustainably produce its products. Not only are the garments made from recycled yarns and materials, but they are also produced to be up-cycled into new products in a circular process he calls “3D”: Design, Distribute, Dismantle.

The core fabric for the collection is primarily recycled polyester, which reduces the carbon footprint by 62 percent versus virgin polyester. All of the polyester will be Global Recycling Standard (GRS) certified.

The collection does not use any non-polymer based blended fabrics because of the difficulties in separating two kinds of yarns in the recycling process, the use of metals is also limited because of the difficulty in removing those materials from garments.

“After looking at all of the options out there, the opportunity with recycled polymers and polyesters is the most efficient material to help us achieve the goal of reducing the carbon footprint of our product,” said Graham. “It is by no means perfect, there are still many issues with polyester in terms of its release of micro-fibers into the environment and other factors, but its use of resources such as water and arable land is minimal compared with other fibers.”

The designer cited outdoor brand Patagonia as an inspiration for their work in balancing environmental issues while using petroleum-based fibers and their continuing work to improve the efficiency of their production.

Polyester is also well known for its energy efficiency in the consumer life-cycle including cold water wash, faster drying time, wrinkle-free to avoiding ironing, and doesn’t need to be laundered as often as cotton. The yarns of polyester are also much more durable and last much longer.

Though the message of the collection is one of reusability, the collection also uses Graham’s signature wit and irony in its design. Sport shirts are classic and ironic; classic paisleys and micro florals are combined with mountain scenic prints and wild animals. Collegiate inspired cardigans, rugby striped sweaters, basic crewnecks, and argyle sweater vests can be worn with quilted camouflage and plaid bomber jackets to create a wardrobe that any trendy environmentalist can wear.

John Kammeier, president of Nick Graham, said, “Given the success of our first sportswear collection in spring 2020, the ‘Nick Graham refresh’ concept is a positive evolution for the brand. We know this is going to do very well.”

So, could his collection really be up-cycled into other garments, shoes, and accessories? “Absolutely!” the designer said, adding that he has been in discussions with U.S.-based recycling mills that can turn his apparel back into polyester pellets or yarns at the end of the season. From there he could even use it for his spring 2021 collection.

Recent developments in technology using enzymes and other biological means can stabilize the polyester yarns from breaking down giving it the same properties as virgin polyester. Technology is also addressing the release of micro-fibers which is a big problem with the fiber.

“We know that there are many other issues involved in the supply chain such as renewable energy, water usage, and transportation, but the first thing we can affect is the carbon footprint of the product,” added Graham. “We understand that we have much to learn, but we have to start somewhere.”

The company plans to expand the re•fresh label into its underwear, loungewear, footwear, accessories, and tailored clothing collections, and is considering women’s, children’s and home in the near future.
