Just saw a vid of a woman saying how being chronically ill means slowly going insane but being forced to pretend you’re not and I feel that pretty hard.
Anyone that goes to war with their body and will never be the same emotionally, I see you and you’re not alone 💕

Fun fatphobia fact of the day:
CMS/HCC is a way for insurance companies to estimate how much money a patient will cost to insure, based on the major problems they have.
This is my list of diagnoses.
Tumblr media
I blacked out one of them because it is my intersex condition and has to do with my assigned gender, which I don't want to be associated with my online presence. Also, there are a few repeats because doctors will put in their own phrasing, so sometimes when I switch doctors, I get re-diagnosed with the same thing, with slightly different wording. It's also missing a few diagnoses i got as a kid, namely my autism and a comprehensive list of the specific learning disorders I have, because I didn't think they were relevant to a general practitioner and i didn't want them on my record for safety reasons. Anyways, you'll notice that there are several of them that have the aforementioned CMS/HCC label. Those are schizoaffective disorder, major depression (which is part of my sza,) and two counts of "morbid obesity". My adhd, which I need to take two different medications daily to treat sufficiently enough to function, is not labeled as a major disorder, but my size is. Twice!
You'll notice that nowhere on this list is any diagnosis that is supposedly related to my fatness. That is because, metabolically speaking, my health is perfect. My lipids, a1c, blood pressure, pulse, and o2 are all in the excellent range. I am not on any kind of medications for any of these, either. The fact that I have more body tissue than their ideal, which has no bearing on my actual health, is considered more important to address than my neurodevelopmental disorder that requires two expensive medications to treat. They think that I am more of a risk for them because of an imagined bogeyman of a diagnosis ("morbid obesity", aka being fat) than something which actually has real life functional and financial consequences (my severe combined type adhd). Or, for that matter, my ocd, which I needed intensive outpatient therapy for; my transgender identity, which has cost them thousands of dollars in hormones and surgery; my asthma, which requires two medications to treat; and my gerd, which requires one.
I'm not advocating for medical insurance companies to make it harder for people with these diagnoses to get treatment. I'm just pointing out that the medical system sees me as a drain on their resources specifically because of my weight rather than the diagnoses that actually cost them money (albeit with one exception). They think my adipose tissue, which is not causing me any health problems, is more important to note than most of my legitimate health problems.
That is medical fatphobia.

real talk, people with GI issues like to joke and self deprecate with stuff like “I am so brave for surviving a tummyache” or “IBS stands for I Be Shittin’” but if you weren’t aware, having GERD or IBS or a hernia or any other digestive issue can hurt so much that it feels like your organs are on fire or you’re having a heart attack or going through opiate withdrawals and people do go to the hospital sometimes

Gerd.
Jötunn goddess of fertility.
Daughter of Gymer and Aurboda.
Wife of Yngve-Frey and Mother of Fjölner and founding mother of the first Swedish royal line.
I always imagen her with diffent hues of brown in her hair, like the layers of the soil.
Also wearing a lot of gold, because after a lot of nagging to marry Frey, she might as well get the best out of from the wealthiest family line amung the gods. Also she tells skrinir she is allready from a wealthy family and holds just as much wealth as her father does so.
And, when I think about Gerd I also often picture a very strong and confident woman, not in the Freya way with power over love and death and magic, but more like; "yeah, Im fine af, and thrive like the plants in my soil and I know it".
Like just, confidence!
And as a fertility goddess, for me its less of a loving mother, and more of a intense pulse of life within nature that refuse to die. Very much like Frey.

Being physically ill and going to the doctor is the same as bringing in your car to the shop because it’s acting funny and the car running perfectly fine while at the shop.

Students with food intolerances deserve a safe, free lunch too. Failing to provide that because you think it’s unnecessary is just ableism. “Eating this food causes them pain because their body can’t digest it, but it’s not life threatening so we don’t need to accommodate it” is such a bad take. Yes, let’s just make them sick every day instead of giving them the option of safe, free foods to eat. So poor kids will have to choose every day if they’re going to starve themselves or if they’re going to be in excruciating pain the rest of the day when they’re trying to learn. Makes no sense.
Furthermore, I don’t think people realize what food intolerances entail. It’s not just, “oh, eating this food gives me a stomach ache.” It is often caused by the body’s inability to break down the sugars in the food because the pancreas and/or the small intestine doesn’t make enough digestive enzymes. People with food intolerances can have a number of disabling conditions, especially because of malnutrition and malabsorption. I am dependent on digestive enzyme supplements, as well as vitamins because I can’t eat and/or get the nutrition I need to thrive without them. This is disabling. Yes, even if it’s not going to immediately kill me if I eat the wrong thing.
Don’t put people in places where they’re required to work, promising that food will be provided for free, and then only provide foods that will make them sick.

how to get rid of nausea (or at least reduce it)
ok y'all so it's almost 1 in the morning and i can't sleep so i figured i might as well make use of my time. these tips are from what have personally worked well for me as a person who's been dealing with ibs and gerd since basically birth. of course these might not work for everyone, this is just what has helped me the most :)
first, make sure you've taken your meds!
sip on some cold water. preferably with ice.
get some cool air. whether that's through a window or just a fan.
drip some cold water onto the veins of your wrist. i know this sounds kinda weird, but my dad said it's a trick he learned in the military to help nausea. it's worked pretty well for me, personally. though the effect is temporary.
sip on some cola or another fizzy pop. carbonation helps you burp, and you honestly might just have some trapped gas. you'd be shocked how just one good, trapped burp makes you feel like you need to projectile vomit. drink in small, frequent amounts, not large gulps(for the love of god don't take large gulps. please). this is honestly one of the best tricks for nausea for me, it helps within minutes or sometimes a bit longer.
sniff some rubbing alcohol. again, kinda weird, but it works pretty well for some reason.
drink some pepto bismol. a life saver honestly.
take some tums. i highly recommend the peppermint flavored ones. tums are usually for acid reflux/gerd, but the peppermint really helps the nausea part for me. that's why i usually get these bc i'm killing two birds w/ one stone lol
sleep at a high elevation. this helps stomach contents from coming back up. there's been many times where i've had to sleep at a 90° angle. get out your pillows and stuffed animals to make one giant mountain if you have to (that's what i do at least).
sleep on your left side. if you really want to sleep on your side, sleeping on the left keeps the stomach contents down the best.
distract yourself. either watching your favorite show, playing a game, or, hell, even working. this might be a bit tricky if the nausea is overwhelming, though.
avoid strong smells. rubbing alcohol is the exception here, but strong smelling things (esp food) has always made my nausea much worse.
avoid spicy/punch-to-the-face type food. eat simple foods like toast, saltine crackers, or applesauce. my personal favorite is dried seaweed (salted)!
sit upright; try not to slouch. sitting upright helps you digest food properly and gets rid of any trapped gas as well.
don't move around a ton. of course, some simple stretching is beneficial, but i'm just suggesting you don't go run for a few miles when you're feeling like shit <3

16: Gerd and Freyr
Gerd said:
'Barri is the name, as we both know, of a wind-calm grove; and after nine nights, there to Niord's son Gerd will give love's pleasure.'
Skírnismál 39, translated by Carolyne Larrington
In this poem Freyr falls in love with Gerd, the daughter of a jötunn, and sends his old friend and servent Skirnir to woo her. Gerd agrees after Skirnir threatens to curse her with a repulsive husband and unbearable sexual frustration. Several scholars have suggested that the poem was intended for dramatic presentation, perhaps as a sort of hieros gamos since Gerd's name has been etymologically associated with the earth and enclosures.

the peak “people mock a product they perceive as excessive when it’s actually important for disabled people” imho is different types of water with pH balances and electrolytes and stuff, because those can be a lifesaver for people with GI issues who often can’t get electrolytes from food or have internal environments that are highly sensitive to acidity
related: saying you can’t drink tap water/“plain” water for whatever reason and people looking at you like a cartoon parody of a rich person
