The covers of the new edition of T.P. Bon being released next month are just so, so, so cute; I love the colors and the simple design and of course I love the characters, particularly vol 2 with Ream and Buyoyon in pink. Normally I'd just pick them up along with other things I'm getting from Japan, but they're also promising ANOTHER deluxe edition release in July so I won't be able to decide which edition to pick up until then =_= I haven't even gotten my hands on the sf short stories deluxe editions yet, all ten volumes are on a ship somewhere in the South China Sea probably.
Bon is getting a Netflix anime treatment sometime this year (hence the new manga releases). It's a sci-fi series about teen time travel agents saving the lives of ordinary people throughout history. I don't normally watch anime but I'll probably check it out; if it's anything like the manga it'll be a solid series with really good historical research, fun time travel shenanigans, and a lot of moral quandaries about human lives. Maybe if this does well for Netflix they'll do Mojako next...

When I said I didn’t have anything else to say about Redhead Anko (赤毛のアン子), I was forgetting about this gem. Fujiko F. Fujio’s one-shot manga was also adapted as a one-shot live-action drama. It was featured as a 1986 episode of Monday Dramaland (月曜ドラマランド) and was only ever released on VHS, but, after many attempts, I was able to get my hands on a copy of the tape, rip it, and upload it here for fandom and historical use.

One of the historical figures I’m interested in as a possible precedent for the Showa magical girls is Himiko (卑弥呼). Himiko was a shamaness-queen of Yamatai, a state in the Japanese archipelago during the late Yayoi period. Historical sources identify her as a beloved monarch and a powerful sorceress.
She is also associated with magic mirrors, which is a link between her and the Amaterasu (天照) story, and to magical girls who have magic mirrors like Secretive Akko-chan (ひみつのアッコちゃん).
The images of her here come from a Doraemon (ドラえもん) manga exploring Japanese historical figures released in 1995. Doraemon is from the manga-ka Fujiko F. Fujio (藤子・F・不二雄), who also created two Showa magical girls — Redheaded Anko (赤毛のアン子) and ESPer Mami (エスパー魔美).
