Wearable Futures: The technopolitics of our clothes

Our future is influenced by how we imagine it might look. Many of our images of the future and the technologies inhabiting it arrive at or are handed down to us, pre-made and in great detail, often by Hollywood but also from other pervasive media platforms such as social media and digital games. Seldom do we get the chance to participate in crafting these images ourselves. And even when we do, seldom are we afforded the opportunity to consider deeply how historical events and contemporary situations shape the trajectory of our journey through what futurists often describe as a cone of possible, potential, and plausible futures. As an exhibit of speculative design propositions, Wearable Futures is a collaborative reimagination of tomorrow as embodied through the future of clothing and wearables.

Our relationship with clothing has always been rich and fraught. In Judeo-Christian narratives, clothing was a form of punishment for knowledge and worldliness. When Adam and Eve ate the fruit from the tree of knowledge, part of the punishment was the loss of innocence and the shame of being naked. In contemporary sociological and anthropological analysis, clothing started as purely functional implements intended to protect us from the environment. At some point, clothing also became a vehicle to convey social status, as well as for “practices of identification”, for self-identity and group membership, yes, but also othering and, therefore, stratification. Clothing extends the self even as it signals something about its wearer. Clothing, in other words, is inherently political, something that is palpably clear when we also consider how the widespread commodified demand for clothes continues to generate market forces that, in turn, often result in exploitative labor and extractive practices. 

Clothing is also a form of technology, and one that is particularly related to our everyday experience. Ito and pinakamalapit sa ating katawan at sa ating identity. Wearable Futures invites us to consider how experimenting with clothing has the potential to transform the way we understand ourselves in relation to the environment and to others. Wearable technology design is widely accessible to our context, not only because it requires materials and tools that cost less than those involved in many other forms of engineering innovation, but also because it generates outputs and ideas that can be embodied and, thus, appreciated, because wearing clothes is something we all do–it is a shared practice and a shared experience.

Wearable Futures highlights the complex and interconnected relationship between technology, politics, and clothing—and the need for critical examination of the social and cultural significance of what we wear and why we wear it—through two bodies of work. 

The first is the collection of undergraduate student outputs from the MMS 198 Special Topics course from AY 2022-2023 First Trimester, which was structured as a hybrid learning experience. The course was collaboratively created with and for undergraduate students, and explores wearable technology, e-textiles, speculative design, and futures thinking. The exhibit features five wearable prototypes exploring themes of information security (HASMI), physical safety (KA-KAMPANTE), human movement (Exergen), farming (The Index), and climate change (NVro). The second collection is a set of works-in-progress by the 2022 fellows of the Emerging Futurist Residency, a research and creative virtual/in-person program focused on supporting and nurturing exploration by multidisciplinary teams from different fields. The 2022 cohort—composed of fashion designer-architect JJ Aquino, researcher-creative producer Franchesca Casauay, and fashion designer-illustrator Renz Reyes—explores individually and collectively various aspects of the Terno, arguably the Philippines’ most iconic national dress. With Casauay guiding the overall creative production, Aquino and Reyes dismantle and reimagine the Terno’s materiality, construction, and sociocultural function, experimenting with how a Terno might look, move, and come to be in the near future.

Welcome Back, Mary Ward Planet!

With a new team of fantastic journalists and artists, we are excited to bring to you our new initiatives

Throughout the month of October, Teacher Supervisor Mrs. Powell and Editor-in-chief Karissa Cruz interviewed many candidates for the Planet’s executive positions. Together, they chose a diverse group of students across all grades for the 2022-2023 Mary Ward Planet Executive Team. Some are previous Planet members and others are brand-new additions to the team. Rounding off the Editors-in-chief is Ysmael Mendoza who joins Karissa as Co-Editor-in-Chiefs. To start off with our section editors, our World Issues editor is Shauri Taylor. The Planet’s Life section editor is Erika Nanquil Munoz.  Next is our WACT section editor; Emmanuele Reyes.  Justin Mikhail Espidido follows as our Sports section editor for this year. Our last section editor is  Angela Lin, for Community. This year’s Planet’s Redactrice is Drea Abungin. Our Planet Relations is Franchesca Dairo and our Planet Webmaster is Joshua Crisologo. The Creative Spaces section editor for this year is Katrina Ross Rodriguez, while this year’s Art Editor is Bianca Daganato. Finally, our Junior Editors for this year are Fynley Clarete, Aby Villasis, and Daphne Da Costa. We are all extremely excited to be the Planet executives for this year and are looking forward to showing you what we have in store!

Our main goal for this year is to rebrand. We want to make our blog and our Instagram account look more modern and more appealing to fellow students and teenagers. As you can see, our blog is outdated and needs some renovation. As a result,  a major part of our rebranding plan is to renovate the blog by updating our executive team, finding a better way to showcase our previous issues and changing up our aesthetic. Our Art Editor is going to create a new header and logo, while our Planet Webmaster is in charge of renovating the blog. We really want to grow our blog and the first step is renovating. Additionally, we are putting more focus on our Instagram account as well. The same logo for the blog will be used as our new profile picture for our Instagram account; @mw.planet. Along with our Planet Relations, we want to create aesthetically pleasing Instagram posts to draw people in and promote our work! We will also be using our Instagram account to promote many fun and engaging projects, so stick around for those! Overall, with this rebrand, we want to bring you a new Mary Ward Planet and expand our team’s amazing work to an even more amazing audience!

Now that we’re finally back to a completely in-person year, we decided to give the paper a chance to truly shine. Some exciting things that we have planned include a section in our Creative Spaces for writers and editors to share their own personal short stories/essays, in addition to a Reddit-themed section in Creative Spaces. Our newest feature called “Am I in the Wrong” is inspired by the new segment by Words from Ward, and story submissions will be open to all Mary Ward students. Students are encouraged to anonymously submit stories where they felt that they were in the wrong. We will be accepting submissions until November 21st, so submit your stories as soon as possible! In addition to our physical issue initiatives, another one of our goals is to introduce streeter interviews with different Mary Ward students on our Instagram, as well as create tri-annual news recaps on the happenings throughout our school community. 

Overall, our plan for this school year is to bring new initiatives to our award-winning newspaper, recognized by the Toronto Star, to help give back to the students. All students are welcome to contribute by writing an article or submitting creative pieces to our creative space submission box! VENTA DE ENTRADAS PARA EL PONCHO 2019

Desde la Secretaría de Estado de Cultura se informó que el jueves 13 de junio a las 9 horas iniciará la venta de entradas para la 49° Fiesta Nacional e Internacional del Poncho , que tendrá lugar del 12 al 21 de julio en el Predio Ferial Catamarca.

Los puntos de venta serán el Cine Teatro Catamarca y Centro Card, y podrán ser adquiridas de contado efectivo, con tarjetas Cetro Card y del Banco Nación. Desde la organización anunciaron que, mediante un sistema desarrollado íntegramente en nuestra provincia por la empresa local "Ticket Web", se han realizado ajustes para evitar un problema recurrente, como es la reventa de entradas, con lo cual mucha gente termina pagando mucho mas del valor real del boleto. Por ello, en esta oportunidad, por cada ticket que se adquiera, se deberá informar el número de documento de la persona que usará la entrada. Cabe destacar que la Secretaría de Cultura podrá seguir usando de ahora en más esta plataforma de venta de tickets, que ya cuenta con la base de datos necesaria para implementar en posteriores eventos organizados por este organismo.

También se dio a conocer que en caso de no poder usar la entrada adquirida, se la podrá devolver en los puntos de venta, con reintegro del dinero, hasta 72 hs. antes del espectáculo en cuestión. En estos tiempos en que el dinero no nos sobra, desde Cultura se buscó la manera de evitar que la gente pague el doble, y hasta el triple de lo que vale una entrada para el Festival de invierno más grande del país. Asimismo, el comprador puede brindar una dirección de correo electrónico, donde posteriormente se le enviará su entrada, con el código correspondiente, lo cual le brinda posibilidad de imprimirla en caso de extravío. Además el sistema tiene un contador que le servirá al usuario de recordatorio de la noche del espectáculo para el que compro la entrada. PUNTOS DE VENTA Cine Teatro Catamarca, San Martin 555, de lunes a viernes de 9 a 12 y de 15 a 19 horas. Centro Card, República 681, Capital y sucursal Valle Viejo, en horario comercial. Y mientras que la princesa la odette ochoa leia plácidamente en sus aposentos del castillo los guiones de la santa bertha interpretados por la rafferty shenzac, disfrutando de un sabroso café con su par de boliquetes y del gran calorcito que le brindaba la chimenea que estaba colocada en la esquina de su delicada recamara.

LOO.- Y como me gustaría interpretar a la rafferty shenzac ¿???

Y como sus padres eran inmensamente ricos y no en balde porque eran los reyes del planeta londux que se encontraba en el sistema solar anayaconda, que se encontraba en la galaxia pesilcasan y que se encontraba en el universo 000’oo.

Y ellos estaban viviendo el abundante sexto año de los anisortos paralelamente con el inicio del siglo 21 de la tierra y como la preocupación se invento solamente para los pobres los acebos se dedicaban exclusivamente a corretear a las doncellas que no les caía nada mal ser atrapadas por uno de ellos.

Y de repente la princesa cayo dormida en un sueño muy raro y muy profundo otorgado por la ligera cena, el cansancio y el agradable calor que producía la chimenea.

Entonces la princesa se levanto para contestar el teléfono.

LOO.- bueno ¿???

Y no se me apendejen porque ahora ella estaba correteando a un acebo en el limbo.

LOO.- Quien habla ¿???

Pero alguien si se levanto a contestar el teléfono.

LOO.- No escucho nada ¿???

Y aquí existen tres opciones para contestar el teléfono pero si les decimos tan solo una se acaba el circo y entonces del puro coraje se encueraran a media calle y se regresan por la noche a su casa para tomar su lechita.

EMR.- Soy el investigador melto rowler

Y se acuerdan de nuestro viejo conocido.

EMR.- Y deseo hablar urgentemente con la princesa odette ochoa, por favor y si se puede con urgencia ¿???

A pesar de que parecía que estaba hablando con una molesta grabadora, el señor rowler no se desesperaba.

Y entonces la odette al ver que el señor rowler estaba sufriendo las penas del mundo se compadeció.

LOO.- Esta bien, acepto ¡!!!

 Y entonces el investigador se dispuso a explicarle a la princesa todo el proyecto y lo hizo detalladamente.

Y después de que terminaron de ponerse de acuerdo la odette ochoa comenzó a seleccionar la ropa que tenia que llevar en el viaje y varias cositas personales que tenia sobre la mesita que estaba a un lado de la cama y en donde estaba el teléfono.

La princesa se sentía un poco extraña porque por primera vez no empacaba joyas, vestidos ni maquillaje y salió rumbo a la noria para hacer la ultima y única parada con Los Sánchez de Los Sánchez y de Los Sánchez.

Y cuando llego a la casa todos los fisgones de la gran familia ya la estaban observando por la ventana mientras yuridia decía.

LYN.- Miren quien habla ¿???

Y entonces todos salieron para darle un gran recibimiento.

Todos.- Tía, tía, tía, tía, tía, tía, tía, tía y tía ¿???

Y casi ni siquiera la dejaban salir del carro cuando todos se le echaron encima como al Heraclio bernal y fue la madre de la casa y sobrina de ella la que le dio el primer beso.

LYN.- Vaya, vaya, vaya, tendría que estar pasando algo fuera de este mundo para que se dignara a pasar por la casa ¿???

LOO.- Efectivamente porque me acaba de contratar el maestro para misión imposible ¡!!!

ETD.- Los del programa de televisión, no la haga tía ¿???

LOO.- No exactamente ¡!!!

Pero entonces La Fanny Franchesca con Los Sánchez, de Los Sánchez y de Los Sánchez se le quiso pegar como lapa.

Nine boys and 20 girls topped the final Regional Selection Camp of Jr. NBA Philippines 2019 presented by Alaska held April 27-28, 2019 at the Don Bosco Technical Institute in Makati City, Metro Manila, Philippines. This will also serve as the venue for the National Training Camp on May 17-19, 2019.

The young athletes, selected by Jr. NBA Coaches Rob Newson and Alaska’s Jeffrey Cariaso, Tony dela Cruz and Willie Miller, stood out from the 591 participants,exhibiting fundamental skills and core values of Sportsmanship, Teamwork, a positive Attitude and Respect (S.T.A.R.) throughout the two-day event.  They will join top players from the Regional Selection Camps in North Luzon (Benguet), South Luzon (Lucena), Visayas (Dumaguete) and Mindanao (Butuan) and a select group from the Alaska Power Camp and vie to be named as 2019 Jr. NBA Philippines All-Stars comprised of five boys and five girls.

New this year, the Jr. NBA Philippines All-Stars will be sent to the first Jr. NBA Global Championship Asia Pacific Selection Camp, a week-long camp in June that includes top youth players from the Asia-Pacific region excluding China.

In addition, the Asia-Pacific regional competition will form a team of 10 boys and 10 girls that will represent the region at the Jr. NBA Global Championship on August 6-11, 2019 at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World near Orlando, Florida that will feature youth players from the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, China, Mexico, Africa, India and the Asia-Pacific.

Jr. NBA Philippines 2019 is presented by Alaska, with AXA, Gatorade, Globe, Panasonic, Rexona and Vivo as official partners. ABS-CBN S+A, Basketball TV and NBA Premium TV are the official broadcasters of Jr. NBA Philippines.
