I got curious and decided to look at the technical specs on IMDB
Season one and two are shot with Leitz SUMMILUX-C lenses which are described as capturing natural colors of a scene very well. This makes SO MUCH sense especially for season one, where everything feels so much more down to earth. There would have been some color grading/correction I’m sure but I wouldn’t be surprised if at least for season one they kept it closer to the initial capture.
Tumblr media
Season 3 is where they change lenses, which makes sense given the dramatic shift in tone and color grading that happened that season. They shoot with Leitz THALIA lenses which are described as being more cinematic. It’s focal length doesn’t go as low as the Summilux-C (which can go down to 16mm for incredibly low depth of field) but it can go up to 180mm while the Summilux-C can only go to 135mm.
Tumblr media
Season 4 was shot on Arri Alexa Large Format camera which is apparently what is approved to shoot Netflix 4K programming. I’m not sure if they are required to use this camera, although the large formatting does match the cinematic feel that they seem to be going for with season 4. Also something interesting is that they were shooting and mixing for Dolby. Perhaps they knew ahead of time they wanted to have theatrical screenings? I think I remember the Duffers talking about wanting to have season 5 in theaters, I could see them doing that for the finale.

THE JOY OF GERIATRIC PHOTOGRAPHY :
I have found the ultimate *"Crip Camera"- a Nikon P1000. It is the World's largest 'point & shoot' camera with the size and weight of a D850 with a Sigma Art lens.
I no longer possess the slender, easy-moving, contortion-abled body of my youth. My lungs are shot from 40 years of smoking to the point I run out of breath when doing hard-core critical thinking. I'm a rolly-polly fat fuck in a borderline diabetic, bursitis, and gout-infused physique. I walk like a cripple for maybe a hundred feet before I have to either sit down or fall down.
"Falling down" is NOT an option!
With the "Crip Camera", I have versatility in a small package :
- one camera instead of two.
- one non-interchangeable lens, vice four interchangeable lenses.
- a seven by twelve over-the-shoulder pouch, vice an eighteen by thirty backpack that opens on the 'wrong end' to protect all that heavy gear from being ripped off while you're walking with it.
This picture (of either a 172 or a 182) at the south end of the ramp was taken from the north end of the ramp at the "T" line by the restaurant. The lens was zoomed to a focal length of 180mm - the 35mm camera equivalent of 990mm. It is also the same spot where I took a picture of a father and daughter by the wingtip of an orange SGS 2-33 glider (hereto forever known as the "Great Pumpkin"). It will be uploaded after processing (editing).
The next project will be how well the "Gimp" photographs airplanes that are taking off and landing - showing the propellers as actually turning, rather than every airplane doing a "dead stick" landing.
Apparent sharpness will be critical as well (sounds like something Yogi Berra would have said).

Best Tokina Cine Lenses: Full Frame Vista Primes
You know as well as I do there are a lot of cinema lenses on the market, particularly now that we are in 2024.
So why consider the Tokina Cinema Vista Primes? My video review includes LOTS of footage to showcase just how amazing these lenses are. I think of Tokina lenses as having character while still being sharp. The Vista Primes have no focus breathing, beautiful flare characteristics, are fast at a T 1.5, have interchangeable lens mounts and can cover Vista Vision size sensors. Tokina Vista Primes come in focal lengths between 18mm - 180mm, so they really are a complete set.
Tokina has released a second set of these lenses called Vista-P with reduced contrast, swirly bokeh and a look that better reflects a set of vintage lenses. The plus of the P series is they are modern in physical design, so you get the vintage look but in a lens body that is easier for professional focus pullers and cinematographers to use than vintage lenses that might have challenging physical characteristics.
Enjoy the review and if you're interested in these awesome lenses use the coupon code CONLIN10 and save 10% off! Tokina Cinema lenses and filters through their USA store https://bit.ly/3RMnms4

Nikon Announces Two Lenses... Is One of them Made by Tamron?
This evening, Nikon announces two new lenses: the NIKKOR Z 70-180MM F/2.8 and the NIKKOR Z 180-600mm F/5.6-6.3 VR. Both lenses will be welcome additions to the growing Z-mount lineup, but the more intriguing of the two is the Nikkor Z 70-180 f/2.8. Is it a Tamron-made lens? It will not escape many people’s notice that the focal length of the lens is exactly the same as the Tamron 70-180 f/2.8…

So the closer focal length gives the face a slight distortion and sharper background but further away you get a blurry background and true to life face

The EF 180mm / f3.5L Macro USM lens is an ideal lens for shooting well-focused detailed shots from the photographer’s comfort zone (working distance). For Macro photography, this lens produces images with a ratio of 1:1 square portraits and with a 0.48m walking distance. This lens’ long focal length is primarily used for wildlife photography, with its 8-bladed diaphragm creating sharp images with beautiful and fantastic background blurs throughout the the focusing range.
The TS-E 135mm /f4L Macro lens is a tilt-and-shift lens which has a long focal length. This lens is unique in planes of focusing with a built-in calibrated 10 degrees tilt and 12mm shift movements, with optical engineering and precision moulded glass for low distorted shots. For Macro photography, this lens is produces edge-to-edge definition and capability to 1:2 life-size ratio, creating fantastic shots with perfect clarity and focus, because of the 0.5 maximum magnification. This lens is perfect for shooting with much flexibility. Good for architectural photography and studio portraiture set-ups.
The RF 85mm F2 Macro IS STM lens is a lens suitable for shooting with well-focused detail and subject matter. Although the lens has a focal length of only 85mm, this lens is ideal for shooting fantastic portraiture, producing soft backgrounds, for it’s wide f/2 aperture setting. Can pick up quick detail for only 35cm, and also let the photographer shoot images with a 5-stop image stabilisation in low lighting.

Post Production - Focal Lengths Task
One of our tasks was to take photos using four different focal lengths but try to keep the head and body around the same size. For these images i used focal lengths of: 80mm, 100mm, 125mm, 180mm. It started to get tricky to keep the head the same size specially when I brought out my longer lens.
The difference between each focal length is that the background blurs out the longer the lens and the face becomes flatter.

I don't much like talking abut technical matters in photography and you won't find much discussion of it here. (Big sigh of relief among followers.) But occasionally I stumble across a lens or a camera that blows my doors off, and this is an example. So I developed really nasty tendonitis in my right elbow this summer and fall doing street photography in New York, using this massively heavy Nikon 70-200mm F/2.8 lens. It is great lens--no question, but put it on a heavy body and shoot--I don't know--20,000 exposures, maybe? Up to you eye and down again, repetitive motion, you get the idea. I may have the first known case of Photographer's Elbow.
So I needed a lighter lens, but I wanted the reach of a 200mm focal length. So I did some research, and I found this old, somewhat clunky Nikon lens, the AF Nikkor 180mm 2.8. My friend  @wynndy will know this lens.  Nikon has been making versions of this lens since the 1970's, obviously designed for film cameras. They eventually added some features--autofocus of course--and they are still manufacturing it. It has a much older feel to it than newer lenses, of course. The autofocus is driven my a motor in the lens itself, and it's a bit slow and clunky. You might have trouble with birds in flight, for example. But for the same reason, the manual focus is superb because it has DNA going back to its origins in film cameras that did not have AF. It also has an aperture ring, which you are not going to use if you use it with a D7000 or better--I think the auto focus may not be compatible with the D5000 series or lower--but it is lovely, especially if you want to use this on an older film camera. And it has no glass on the back, which means you need to be super clean when changing this lens, because any dust that accumulates around the blades or inside the lens is going to blow back onto you sensor and we all know what that means--dust bunnies, more work in post processing, sensor cleaning, blah, blah, blah...
All of that said, there are two things about this prime that are amazing--(1) it is only six inches long, built like a tank, and yet weighs well under two pounds and (2) it is just ridiculously sharp. I guess this is partly nostalgia on my part, but it shows how at least in the camera realm, in a world of mirrorless this and telephoto that, some of that older equipment is still around and it works great.
Like me. LOL

Used these 3 photos as a sequence in my booklet. Really liked the contrast and colour combination of the clouds this day. Decided that I’d show the different shots as a sequence to show a pattern but also be different at the same time.
