Understanding The Usage Of Flagpoles
A tall pole that may be used to fly a flag is called a flagpole. For thousands of years, people have used flags and flagpoles.
● Wall-mounted flagpoles might be seen of as a less permanent method of displaying a flag because they are often shorter than ground-mounted flagpoles
● Choosing a place is the first step in installing a flagpole. Of course, the location in which you erect your flagpole can greatly influence how much you like it.
● A flag is raised high over your head by a flagpole using a pulley system. Additionally, it aids in lowering the flag once again. The process of raising a flag up a flagpole would be all but impossible without a pulley.

UAE Flag Day: Top Things You Need to Know
UAE is celebrating Flag Day, commemorating the anniversary every year on November 3. The occasion is marked at schools and workplaces across the country.
It is the 10th year and sharp at 11 am people stopped working to mark the event. The credit goes to Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid, vice president and Ruler of Dubai in 2013 in the honour to celebrate the accession of Sheikh Khalifa as president in 2004.
Flag day is an opportunity to memorise the significance and recollect the journey the national flag came into existence. Let’s discuss those considerations which led to bringing this day into reality.
Who Designed the Flag of UAE?
There is a breathtaking story behind the selection of the flag of the UAE. In 1971, Abdullah Al Maainah brought a design carved out of intense creativity and novelty. It was presented for a competition organised by Al Ittihad newspaper. This young Emirati effortfully showcased four colours that represented Arab Unity.
The depiction resembles the heart-warming phrases in poetry written by Safi-u-in Al Hali. Besides this, his submission beat more than 1,000 entries vying to become the emblem of the new nation.
Mr. Al Maainah was just 19 years old at the time he participated in that competition. Later, he became the minister of foreign affairs. There were only two flags that were raised in December 1971 for marking the formation of the nation– one was in Abu Dhabi while another was in Union House in Dubai, itself in 2013 when the first flag day was celebrated. But on 3rd November 2022, there were hundreds of thousands.
 UAE Flag Colours
When Mr. Al Maainah designed the UAE’s flag; it is a green, white, and black horizontal tricolour having a red band i.e. nearest to the flagpole portion. The flag was first raised on the morning of December 2, 1971.
Earlier black was the color of Islam in the early years and the first two caliphates. The colour Green represented the caliphate of Fatimids who earlier ruled out of Egypt. Besides this, red was the Ottoman flag and it represented blood. Lastly, white symbolises prophet Mohammed's first victory at the Battle of Badr in 624 CE, including the peace.
Considering the other variations of the Pan-Arab colours attribute red to the Hashemite dynasty. Along with this, a quote from 14th century Iraqi poet Safi Al-Din Hilli wrote: “White are our acts, black are our battles, green our fields, and red are our swords”.
The very first use of these colours was in the flag of the Arab Revolt in 1916. At that time the design was selected by Hussein Bin Ali, the Sharif of Makkah and also the leader of the Revolt.
The Tweet Highlights of The 10th Anniversary
Sheikh Mohammed tweeted asking citizens, companies, and ministries to join the quick gratitude walk. He called on to hoist the flag at sharp 11:00 am to offer an expression of unified gratitude to the home and destiny.
How Should the UAE Flag Need to be Flown?
The people of UAE follow serious practices while securing the prestige of their nations through their actions. The UAE has strict laws regulating the flying of the country’s flag.
Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology set the regulations regarding the flag’s shape which is supposed to be rectangular always. There is a defined order of height, and width, and the order of colours should be followed by everyone. In addition, the owner of the flag is subjected to check the condition of the flag every 45 days. They need to make sure that the flag is not damaged and within six months it should be replaced with the fresh one.
These rules apply to situations where the flag is hung permanently even at government buildings or embassies. Apart from these, there are rules for the maintenance of the short-term use of flags as well.
They should be made out of nylon and must weigh more than 12.5 grams per square metre. There are provinces imposing fines or even putting behind bars on those who abuse the flag. One of the major provisions is article 176, which says, “Anyone who insults the president, flag or the national emblem of the state shall be punished by detention.”
Activities performed on Flag Day in UAE
This day is marked by schools, government offices, businesses, and individuals, they hang the country’s banner outside their homes and workplaces. Communities host numerous flag-raising ceremonies where the National Anthem is played to mark the occasion.
Popular and recognised faces also show gestures of gratitude through their contributions for the welfare of the nation. A Pakistani-Norwegian businessman Sheikh Umar Farooq Zahoor has been always dedicated and forward looking to impact people who are suffering showing his gratitude and love towards the nation.
Umar Farooq Zahoor had also done great work to the patients during the pandemic times in whichever way possible. His attitude towards the people of the nation reflects his kindness and courtesy which inspires millions to replicate the same.
The flag day holds a special place in Emirati culture and if someone wishes to visit they need to keep several considerations in their mind.
In Nutshell,
Flag day commemorates the anniversary of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan who became president of the UAE in 2004. As per the official guide, the colours combine to symbolise the unification of growth, prosperity, and cultural renaissance.
The stunning colours white and black reflect the nation’s charitable contributions & support for the security and peace of the world. Also, the strength of Emiratis and their rejection of injustice and extremism. These days are not the public off but still hold special place in the hearts of people in the nation, U.A.E.

Top 10 tallest buildings in the world
Rising upward more than a century now, skyscrapers have emerged to become the symbol of urban style and might. And what started in the late 1800s continues dynamically into the 21st century as we build higher and higher.
Why do we do it? Professor Valery Augustin of the USC School of Architecture and principal at DNA Architecture + Design says it could come down to one word: "Ego."
"Skyscrapers are aspirational," Augustin told CNN. "Humans have always been fascinated by height. Whether it be Icarus or the Wright Brothers, we have always sought to escape the bonds of the gravity. Skyscrapers let us fly if only briefly."
And then there are the less lofty reasons for going taller -- such as maximizing land value and ever-improving technology and engineering capabilities, Augustin said.
But have we reached the limits of how high we can build? Augustin doesn't think so.
"Engineers and architects are only now beginning to experiment with superlight, superstrong materials composites, graphene come to mind) that may allow us to keep pushing the envelope."
While we wait for the next record-breaker to come along, these are the 10 tallest completed buildings in the world by height of their architectural tops, which includes spires but not structures such as antennae or flagpoles:
10. Taipei 101
Tumblr media
Location: Taipei Height: 508 meters (1,667 feet) | Floors: 101 Public observatory? Yes | Completed: 2004
Still the tallest building in Taiwan, it held the "tallest" title for the world from 2004 until 2010. While nine other skyscrapers since then have surpassed it, Taipei 101 remains a stunning spectacle.
"This building is notable because it essentially stands alone as there are no towers of similar size nearby," Augustin said.
Evoking the image of a Chinese pagoda, it's built to withstand the strong earthquakes and typhoons that can hit the island.
9. CITIC Tower
Tumblr media
Location: Beijing Height: 527.7 meters (1,731 feet) | Floors: 109 Public observatory? Yes | Completed: 2018
Also called China Zun, the No. 9 skyscraper has a memorable form with the top and bottom of the structure wider than the middle floors. The shape is patterned after an ancient Chinese ritual vessel (the "zun").
It's the tallest building in Beijing. Dedicated to office use, it has 101 elevators.
Augustin said it was "one of the more elegant towers" of the top 10 list. "The tapered middle section evokes the appearance of a slender vase rising into the sky."
8. Tianjin CTF Finance Centre
Tumblr media
Location: Tianjin Height: 530 meters (1,739 feet) | Floors: 96 Public observatory? No | Completed: 2019
Tianjin CTF Financial Centre outreaches its nearby capital city rival by a relatively small measure -- just a couple of meters.
The facade of the mixed-use building (office, hotel and serviced apartments) has gently undulating curves that help minimize wind force on the structure.
Asia, and most particularly China, dominates this list, with cities and buildings many in the West may know little or nothing about.
"I would offer that skyscrapers are a symbol of economic power. And as such, they represent Asia's ascendancy as a dominant force in the world economy," Augustin said.
7. Guangzhou CTF Finance Centre
Tumblr media
Location: Guangzhou Height: 530 meters (1,739 feet) | Floors: 112 Public observatory? No | Completed: 2016
Yet another entry from dominant China, the Guangzhou CTF Finance Centre is in the bustling southern port city of Guangzhou.
Overlooking the Pearl River, the building's distinctive features include four setbacks, which allow for green sky terraces and skylights. And for now, it claims the title of having the world's fastest elevator.
Interestingly, the architectural height of the building matches its counterpart in Tianjin. But Guangzhou CTF has a higher occupied height at 495.5 meters while the CTF building in Tianjin has an occupied height of 439.4 meters.
6. One World Trade Center
Tumblr media
Location: New York City Height: 541.3 meters (1,776 feet) | Floors: 104 Public observatory? Yes | Completed: 2014
Once the skyscraper capital of the world, New York has the lone Western Hemisphere entry on the current top 10 list.
One World Trade Center replaced the Twin Towers destroyed in the 9/11 attacks, and the footprint of its cubic base is the same of the original two towers.
For Americans, it's a soaring symbol of resilience and has sleeker design than its boxy predecessors. And its height -- 1,776 feet for the year the Declaration of Independence was signed -- is no coincidence.
5. Lotte World Tower
Tumblr media
Location: Seoul Height: 555 meters (1,821 feet) | Floors: 123 Public observatory? Yes | Completed: 2017
China doesn't have a total lock on skyscraper superlatives in Asia, with South Korea's Lotte World Tower coming in at No. 5.
Skyscrapercenter.com notes that Lotte's design takes "inspiration from traditional Korean art forms."
Industrious Seoul has put the skyscraper to good use with retail, luxury hotel, apartment and office space. It even has a concert hall and rooftop cafe.
It's also served as the launching pad for a dramatic fireworks show.
4. Ping An Finance Center
Tumblr media
Location: Shenzhen Height: 599.1 meters (1,965 feet) | Floors: 115 Public observatory? Yes | Completed: 2017
Shenzhen, another economic powerhouse city in southern China near Hong Kong, makes its mark with the Ping An Finance Center.
It's a very slender building (its width-to-height aspect ratio is 1:10) with a facade of stainless steel and glass, according to TheTowerInfo.com.
This is "one of the better of the bunch," Augustin said. "The exterior provides notable structural expression as it rises from base to top."
3. Makkah Royal Clock Tower
Tumblr media
Location: Mecca Height: 601 meters (1,972 feet) | Floors: 120 Public observatory? Yes | Completed: 2012
The Makkah Royal Clock Tower is the most distinctive structure in the Top 10, and it's the first of two buildings from the Middle East in the round-up.
Built in the busy center of Mecca next to the Grand Mosque, the tower offers a place for devout Muslims that make the Hajj journey.
"True to its name, four colossal clock faces are mounted near the top of the tower. These clocks hold the record for both the largest and highest in the world," according to Skyscrapercenter.com.
2. Shanghai Tower
Tumblr media
Location: Shanghai Height: 632 meters (2,073 feet) | Floors: 126 Public observatory? Yes | Completed: 2015
While China dominates the list, no city in China itself has a monopoly. And it should probably come as no surprise that prosperous Shanghai has the tallest building in China and second tallest in the world.
The building is visually arresting with its twisting, spiral shape headed into the sky. And that look isn't just for show -- it helps the building better withstand winds than a traditional rectangular structure.
Shanghai Tower is host to retail shops, restaurants, offices and hotels.
"Architecturally, this one is the best of the bunch," Augustin said. "Elegant and inventive."
1. Burj Khalifa
Tumblr media
Location: Dubai Height: 828 meters (2,716 feet) | Floors: 163 Public observatory? Yes | Completed: 2010
Like Dubai itself, the Burj Khalifa is setting the pace in the early part of the 21st century.
Blending Islamic influences with modern, energy-saving features, Burj Khalifa "redefined what is possible in the design and engineering of supertall buildings," according to Skyscraper.com. It also connects to Dubai's mass transit system, making it both beautiful and practical.
Augustin called it "exhilarating yet frightening at the same time. Not significant architecturally but perhaps notable as a testament to the will and ingenuity of humankind."
Towers to come
The top 10 skyscrapers might not be able to hold onto their statuses as tallest for too long.
New projects are already underway, including Jeddah Tower in Saudi Arabia, which aims for a height of 1,000 meters. Completed as planned, it would immediately claim the No. 1 spot.
And Goldin Finance 117 (another Tianjin, China, effort) is scheduled to be finished in 2020. At 596.6 meters, it would claim the No. 5 spot and knock Taipei 101 off the list.

Flag poles
There is a deep-rooted debate in the community about which flag pole is the best? There is no doubt about the fact that there are some flag poles that are far superior to others. Here is a list of the top 10 flag poles in Dubai.
Flag poles
The UAE, by virtue of being a part of the United Arab Emirates, holds a number of national flags. There are the UAE flags, which are blue with a white band along with the bottom and a white five-pointed star in the middle. There are the UAE ensign flags, which are like the UAE flags except they have the UAE ensign (the flags of all UAE federal agencies) in the middle of it. There are the UAE national flags, which are the UAE flags but with a red band along the bottom and a red five-pointed star in the middle. There are the UAE military flags, which are the UAE flags but with a green band along the bottom and a green five-pointed star in the middle. There are the UAE law enforcement .
The proper placement of flag poles, you may ask? Now that is just crazy talk! Flag poles, or flag poles and the flag, is a symbol of the country’s supreme power. However, it is not the height of the flag pole that is important, but the location of where it is placed. Every civilization has its own types of flag poles. In the West, the flagpole is always made of metal, representing strength and unity. In the East, the flagpole often has a cross at the top, symbolizing faith and peace. In this country, flag poles are usually made of wood, representing the harmony of different cultures and beliefs.

Press Release:
In the early 2000s, I met Farah Al Qasimi in the hall of mirrors known as Phride.com. It was the double bass-pedaled heart of the UAE’s alternative music scene, where teenagers went to hang out, to find band members, to front, to out-kvlt each other, to fantasize about the punk and indie scene that never quite was. Perhaps we met later at over-distorted gigs held at a cinema hall or a covered ice rink, or selling zines in the parking lots outside, all these nights that had the texture of red suede and so many frustrated ambitions. Standing still as the city blurs in the background, one eye turning blue from the smell of AC coolant. On the third floor, out of sight but leaking down to the street, the lobby pianist is dressed as a clown, practicing for the rest of their lives.
Daytimes are different: sorbet shades, beige draperies and pageant queen dresses, purse-lipped wallpapers, equal-opportunity ruffles. Matching your soap cake to your wastebasket, transposing your lack of agency into furiously decorating a series of closed, climate-controlled environments. Mirrors and vanities and nargis flowers, and enough toys to asphyxiate a fleet of sea turtles. Birds in cages dyed pastel, learning about cruelty much later. Then there were the lurid patterned blankets that signaled a trip back home. They would arrive, shrouded in thick plastic on conveyor belts across various seas, their rounded corners brushing up against hard-shell suitcases and flat screen TVs with their cardboard-packaged promises of bigger, clearer, sharper images.
Al Qasimi’s photographs conjure up all this skeuomorphic frisson, that pleasurable feeling of knowing a surface is trompe l’oeil but needing to give it a quick, suspicious rub all the same. The photographs in the show imagine the world as a funhouse mirror, where aspiration butts up against reality and the impulse to transcend or escape it leads to further entanglement. Take Trompe-L-oeil Car Seat: doesn’t the buttoned upholstery, scratchy and digital, go so well with that neon My Clear Bag, the rear windshield inexplicably shot through with defroster wires that were never turned on? The photograph ends there but as with many of the works on view, the eye longs to complete the image: a cedar-shaped air freshener and the CD dangling from the rear-view mirror, a furry-tongued early morning fog. All these iridescent mirrored surfaces that don’t actually deflect the gaze of the radar, or the CCTV but it’s nice to believe they do anyway. In Al Qasimi’s last show at the gallery, we saw portraits of men implicated in the web of Arab-American diplomacy and soft power. This time, we see Miss Muslimah Iowa, gorgeously embellished and beaming, with another brown hand on her shoulder: America as it could be.
At some point, a mammoth flagpole went up near my apartment in Dubai. It was intended to hold the world’s largest flag but the fabric kept getting shredded by the seaside winds, and the flag got progressively smaller until they arrived at a size that would stay intact. On still days, it would droop like a palm tree denuded of its fronds on only one side. Al Qasimi’s purposefully opaque photographs capture these textures of daily life with wonderful accuracy and, in the case of a gently carved melon, such tenderness too. Things and people that grow together are framed together, a funhouse in which you can’t see yourself but the person standing behind you.
