Moth, Federico Cortese
From the series “Please do not kill butterflies”, pins, oil and pencil on paper, 22 x 22 cm. Please, all these dead animals ... Of course, not everyone of us can or want become vegetarian. Sure, in some cases, maybe, the medical experimentation needs them to get results. But we really have to kill them for our frivolous activities? ... Is it necessary to have so many pink pigs die in front of a camera? Do we really need to dissect sharks in formaldehyde, to starve stray dogs tied to a chain in the corner of a gallery, or to make innocent ants go crazy in twisted tubes of plexiglass? To make these drawings, no butterfly was killed.

Abandoned room with the Mole Antonelliana, Federico Cortese
This painting was inspired by the metaphysical landscapes of De Chirico. I have always been fascinated by their clear vision of the architecture, with the precise design of the shadows, almost anticipating the modern use of three-dimensional modeling software. In the way I feel, however, more introverted and almost unsociable, the outer space is transformed into a closed one, private and protected, from which the human presence is totally gone away. In those rooms then, it may happen that some strange objects and some unexpected decorations appear, suggesting that the person who lives there has overcome the lack of relationship to the outside world with the richness and complexity of his inner world. Other features: Finishing: protective gloss varnish (transparent mastic paint) Location and year created: Turin, Italy - 2018 Certificate of Authenticity: included, with signature of the artist on photograph Edges of the canvas: painted in continuity with the surface (the canvas can be hanged without frame) Signed: on the front, bottom left corner

memory of Venice, Federico Cortese
An original piece from the series “Houses on the water”, oil on thick paper, 50 x 37 cm. When, in my holidays, I go to visit a seaside town or a river town, it often happens that I am involved into the classic tourist trip on the boat, or vessel. Such an experience, by definition, is a little superficial: the distance from the coast, the movement, the limited time, all these elements combined together make the perception confused. But at the same time, perhaps for the fact that the focus can not dwell deeply on anything specific, the end of this experience gives a reminder of the whole, that could reveal the spirit of that place. It 's true, the details are confused, the facades of the buildings overlap, we are no longer sure if the front of that palace was on the Grand Canal or the Giudecca, but probably at the end of the journey, that will remain our most intense memory of Venice. Summary of features: Artist: Federico Cortese Title: Memory of Venice Quantity: 1 Conditions: excellent Medium & materials: oil on thick paper Dimensions: 50 x 37 cm (19.7 x 14.6 in) Paper weight: 290 gr/mq Finishing: protective gloss varnish (transparent mastic paint) Location and year created: Turin, Italy - 2016 Certificate of Authenticity: included, with signature of the artist on photograph Edges of the sheet: clean straight cut (not indented) Signed: on the front, bottom left corner Surface of the paper: rough - canvas effect

The measurement of space - onisco, Federico Cortese
An original piece from the series “The measurement of space”, oil and pencil on paper, 54 x 42 cm. I am a terrible chess player, because every time I play, I get distracted thinking that the chessboard may extend, spread in all directions, to allow to the pawns infinite movements, explorations and strategies. The black and white squares could be understood as the representation of space, discovered and explored, or conquered. And this representation may vary from person to person because each of us perceives the world in a different way. And so, the chessboard will look distorted and unrecognizable, different each time, because it would be the reflection of that unique and unrepeatable experience of the world that we did. Summary of features: Artist: Federico Cortese Title: The measurement of space - onisco Quantity: 1 Conditions: excellent Medium & materials: oil on thick paper Dimensions: 54 x 42 cm (21.3 x 16.58 in) Paper weight: 230 gr/mq Finishing: protective gloss varnish (transparent mastic paint) Location and year created: Turin, Italy - 2014 Certificate of Authenticity: included, with signature of the artist on photograph Edges of the sheet: clean straight cut (not indented) Signed: on the front, bottom left corner Surface of the paper: smooth

Sǐ, death, Federico Cortese
An original piece from the series “Zi hua”, pencil on paper, 30 x 40 cm. I wanted to learn to write Chinese characters, but I've lost control! I have always been fascinated by the art of the ideograms, and when I was in China I spent hours and hours, enchanted to observe people trying to dip the brushes into water, and to draw on the ground ephemeral signs intended to evaporate, with controlled and sensual movements. But my nature is baroque! The gesture that I started cannot be stopped, the hand begins to draw on the paper some convolutions, scrolls and doodles, at first timid, but soon prevailing over the same character and its meaning! And the gesture that remains, even if free and decorative, is extremely rewarding for me! Summary of features: Artist: Federico Cortese Title: Si, death Quantity: 1 Subject: chinese calligraphy Conditions: excellent Medium & materials: pencil on paper Dimensions: 30 x 40 cm (11.8 x 15.7 in) Paper weight: 190 gr/mq Finishing: fixative spray Location and year created: Turin, Italy - 2016 Certificate of Authenticity: included, with signature of the artist on photograph Edges of the sheet: clean straight cut (not indented) Signed: on the front, bottom left corner Surface of the paper: smooth

Construction Detail N. 1, Federico Cortese
An original piece from the series “Construction details”, pencil watercolors and oil on paper, 29.7 x 21 cm. In architectural drawings some conventional symbols are used to represent the various parts of the design or construction. For example, a red pattern can be adopted to highlight a sectioned wall, a wavy line can represent the thermic insulation, a double line with an internal hatch means a waterproofing membrane, and so on. I tried to carry these symbols on organic forms, mixing the two languages. The architectural symbol drags behind part of the original meaning. In his new capacity will evoke the idea of a protective skin, a shell, an inner layer of fat. Summary of features: Artist: Federico Cortese Title: Construction detail number 1 Quantity: 1 Conditions: excellent Medium & materials: pencil and watercolor on paper Dimensions: 29.7 x 21 cm (11.7 x 8.3 in) Paper weight: 190 gr/mq Finishing: fixative spray Location and year created: Turin, Italy - 1999 Certificate of Authenticity: included, with signature of the artist on photograph Edges of the sheet: clean straight cut (not indented) Signed: on the front, top left corner Surface of the paper: smooth

Flag number 9, Federico Cortese
An original piece from the series “Flags”; oil, ink and pencil on paper; 44 x 55 cm. During the Winter Olympics in Turin in 2006 a large celebratory structure gathered the flags of all participating countries. These flags were displayed one next to each other, in a large matrix, which revealed that the criteria of composition and the formal rules that generated them were more or less equal for all. Also in this series each drawing is a matrix, and each element of the matrix reproduces always the same basic geometric structure, within which, the color fields, the decorations, the shades and symbols may change, in an almost infinite variation. Each small rectangle is a flag, independent and completed in itself, but linked to the other by the formal rules that generated them. Each flag is a possibility in an infinite number of possible variations, where the final choice of a single element has been delayed or has not been accomplished at all. Each drawing is a series within the series. Summary of features: Artist: Federico Cortese Title: Flag number 9 Quantity: 1 Conditions: excellent Medium & materials: oil, ink and pencil on paper Dimensions: 44 x 55 cm (17.3 x 21.6 in) Paper weight: 230 gr/mq Finishing: fixative spray Location and year created: Turin, Italy - 2007 Certificate of Authenticity: included, with signature of the artist on photograph Edges of the sheet: clean straight cut (not indented) Signed: on the front, bottom left corner Surface of the paper: smooth

The cities of Mars, Federico Cortese
An original piece from the series “Code”, oil on thick paper, 28 x 50 cm. A map is an imprint, a sign of man in the landscape. An alien intelligence, observing our cities from the great distances of the space, could interpret them as the characters of an alphabet, sort of messages, a code of signs, each one different from the other, each with its own meaning and its own syntax. This hypothetical alien presence may not even realize that these cities have a purpose and a function, which are the product of the way we have adapted to live on this planet, but it could engage in an attempt to interpret this unknown language, identifying the alphabet and associating to each character a precise meaning. We will still be able to understand and share this new meanings, or will they have lost any sense for us? Summary of features: Artist: Federico Cortese Title: The cities of Mars Quantity: 1 Conditions: excellent Medium & materials: oil on thick paper Dimensions: 28 x 50 cm (11 x 19.7 in) Paper weight: 290 gr/mq Finishing: protective gloss varnish (transparent mastic paint) Location and year created: Turin, Italy - 2016 Certificate of Authenticity: included, with signature of the artist on photograph Edges of the sheet: clean straight cut (not indented) Signed: on the front, bottom left corner Surface of the paper: rough - canvas effect

Cipher 7, Federico Cortese
From the series “Code”, oil and pencil on paper. When we consider a road map or a map of the territory we note that they contain different information that are represented by different means, according to the purpose for which they were created: each time we find colors, symbols and words that recall a precise meaning. What happens if I take these techniques of representation, these symbols, and take off the scope for which they were created and mingle them with each other? Will it be for the reader a text in a foreign language, that is meaningless, or through the world of associations and references that each of us possesses, will generate a new language and associate to those images a new meaning? In these drawings, the invention of the map of a city is only a pretext. Gradually, by changing the shapes, colors and the hierarchy of associations between the various elements I explore the possibilities of changing this language increasingly moving away from its original meaning. www.federicocortese.com

circular diagram, Federico Cortese
An original piece from the series “Diagram”, pencil and oil on paper, 44 x 50 cm. In my youth at the school, certain lessons were inevitably boring. When the distraction peered, inadvertently I began to scribble the pages of the books, filling with drawings their blank borders. The hour of history, or philosophy, gave easy ideas: I copied the portraits of philosophers illustrating the beginning of each chapter in the textbook. The math class gave beautiful diagrams: their geometries structured the space, providing backgrounds to fill with decorations, figures, pictures. Maybe it was the insight that those same geometry hid himself a sort of aesthetics, an inexplicable and axiomatic beauty, like when we are aware of it in front of nature, without being able to give it an explanation. This sort of drawings make me think of a kind of prayer, a repetitive but pleasant action, like the work of an embroiderer, like a spider weaving its web. Summary of features: Artist: Federico Cortese Title: Circular diagram Quantity: 1 Conditions: excellent Medium & materials: oil and pencil on thick paper Dimensions: 44 x 50 cm (17.3 x 19.7 in) Paper weight: 230 gr/mq Finishing: fixative spray Location and year created: Turin, Italy - 2015 Certificate of Authenticity: included, with signature of the artist on photograph Edges of the sheet: clean straight cut (not indented) Signed: on the front, bottom middle Surface of the paper: smooth

landscape with garbage, Federico Cortese
An original piece from the series “Landscape with garbage”, oil on canvas, 34.7 x 27 cm. I’m afraid that I have never seen in my whole life a place that was totally devoid of garbage or waste. Like the majority of people nowadays, I have traveled quite a lot, and in all the places where I've been, even in apparently pristine landscapes, such as high mountain paths or natural parks, there is always the memory of some garbage. Maybe hidden, perhaps barely visible and half buried, faded by the sun and worn out from the weather, mainly plastic, now part of nature. In the countryside of southern Italy, especially in Puglia, just digging in the ground it is very easy to uncover relics of ancient Greek civilization: pieces of amphorae, shards of pottery, coins. It's too easy to say that this was a refined civilization, so that we still consider its waste like works of art, while ours is a barbarian society that submerged the planet of trash. Will we arrive at the point of saying that the difference is only quantitative?... Will it happen, in a near future, that we will come to replace the ruins of antiquity with the scraps of our consumerism? Summary of features: Artist: Federico Cortese Title: Landscape with garbage Quantity: 1 Conditions: excellent Medium & materials: oil on wood panel (plywood) Dimensions: 34.7 x 27 cm (13.7 x 10.6 in) Thickness: 0.5 cm Finishing: protective gloss varnish (transparent mastic paint) Location and year created: Turin, Italy - 2015 Certificate of Authenticity: included, with signature of the artist on photograph Signed: on the front, bottom left corner

bombing Turin, Federico Cortese
From the series “Code”, oil and graphite pencil on paper, 30 x 30 cm. A map is an imprint, a sign of man in the landscape. An alien intelligence, observing our cities from the great distances of the space, could interpret them as the characters of an alphabet, sort of messages, a code of signs, each one different from the other, each with its own meaning and its own syntax. We will still be able to understand and share this new meanings, or will they have lost any sense for us? The idea of painting the bombed cities has born as a series inside the series. It comes from my direct experience; in fact, Turin was strongly bombed during the Second World War and the sign of that bombings still remains in some parts of the city, where the destroyed buildings haven't been replaced, leaving a hole in the urban tissue.

Embroidery, Federico Cortese
An original piece from the series “Embroideries”; pencil, ink and oil on paper; 40 x 40 cm. The maps of the sky, unlike the traditional maps, have no edges or boundaries. Here there is no demarcation between land and water, there is only the position of dots representing the stars in the vacuum of space, and possibly the lines joining these points, to create similarities with animals, symbols or objects that help us remember and recognize. The plot of these points and these lines creates a fictional embroidery. This is the starting point from which I begin this series of drawings. But here the map quickly becomes tangled and twisted. Symbolic forms and objects appear. At first they seem to be of value in orientation, but soon they reveal to be obstacles, capable of generating a maze, and so you get lost, passing from a geometric order to the chaos of a tangled skein. Summary of features: Artist: Federico Cortese Title: Embroidery Quantity: 1 Conditions: excellent Medium & materials: ink, oil and pencil on paper Dimensions: 40 x 40 cm (15.7 x 15.7 in) Paper weight: 190 gr/mq Finishing: fixative spray Location and year created: Turin, Italy - 2004 Certificate of Authenticity: included, with signature of the artist on photograph Edges of the sheet: clean straight cut (not indented) Signed: on the front, bottom left corner Surface of the paper: smooth

Withered tree, Federico Cortese
from the series "Withered trees", oil colors and graphite pencil on paper. 48 x 32 cm. The structure of a tree is simple and curious: some ramifications in the air to catch the light, some branching underground to pick up the food. But branches and roots are similar: both are developed linearly, until at a certain point, following an algorithm written in the genetic code of the plant, they split, bifurcate, or are tripled, growing in space with a progress which will be sensitive to obstacles of soil or climatic conditions of the place. The drawing of the bare branches and of the roots, flattened by the simplicity of a pattern in pencil, creates an embroidery, an imaginary warping which can be generated countless times, always different.
