'Life in the hands of Helio'
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Warning for graphic description of gore + injury below
[Image Description:
With his throat slit, blood bubbling up into his mouth and soaking into his white collared shirt, Buddy Dawn struggles in the arms of Kristen Applebee's. His eyes are wide, unseeing, and hands come up to try and grasp onto Kristen as some kind of anchor, mutedly pleading for help.
Kristen's hand hovers above his throat, unable to help him with his death all but promised by his own party leader, Kipperlilly, and her god too far out of reach. She is panicked and resigned to only hold the kid she had hated moments ago. There is no miracle, no burst of light from the crystals in her pocket, when Buddy Dawn dies.
There is a visual parallel, with both Kristen and Buddy being dotted with freckles and something familiar in their eyes. If there had never been 'The Bad Kids', if she'd never asked to be put in detention with the intent to convert people to Helio, would she have ended up the same way?
Buddy had once said "I don't hold on tight, 'cause I'm in someones hand [...] You know Helio is holding onto us tight." but there is no Helio in sight, only Kristen. All that is left is for Buddy to go and meet his so-called-god and ask why he let him die, unaware he will not get an answer.]

i know it was a 2 second bit in the middle of ep 14 but kipperlilly unironically having a crush on riz would be so funny. acearo character who keeps having creepy villains have a crush on them and not leaving them alone. absolutely astounding character dynamic

the thing with Buddy dying, is he isnt' an adventurer, he's a devout worshipper of Helio and a powerful cleric despite his belief/using it as an excuse, that clerics don't cast spells. He is capable of casting level 7 spells, but that doesn't mean he's a high level character. Brennan has made characters that are powerful, but have low hp.
Angwyn abernant comes to mind. He was powerful enough to down aelwyn with one hit, but Adaine was able to kill him in one strike. She dealt him 77 points of damage to kill him which means he has less than 34 hp. Brennan said he was never a practical caster so it explains his lack of health.
Buddy kind of sounds like a similar, his grandfather might have graduated aguefort, but it's his first year. He wasn't an adventurer and he never had to be this year since he was part of the ratgrinders, why would he need to worry about being killed by rats in the level 1 forest? maybe he was chosen by the ratgrinders for this specifically, strong cleric to revive them if necessary, but easy prey if any of them had to kill him if necessary for the plan or for the evil lulz

do you ever think about how Kristen's crisis of faith in helio was triggered not only by her meeting helio at the gates and him sucking ass, but also how she died being his chosen one and when she let aguefort usurp his power she lived? how she would have realised that the man who brought her back to life wasn't her god but just someone who thought she and her friends were cool? do you think about Bobby Dawn talking about how it was her path but all clerics of helio are watched over by an uncaring frat bro who lets them die? do you think about the corn cuties and ooze killing her, literally the symbol of her faith destroying her? do you think about how she brought herself back from the dead and made her own god forged from her doubt so that anyone forced into her position could seek solace in the cool hands of questioning everything?

I’m having thoughts about Buddy Dawn.
So he obviously and painfully resembles Kristen and who she was before she met the Bad Kids. His death just strengthens that notion. But I don’t know if he will turn from Helio if he’s brought back.
Kristen faced a betrayal when meeting her god. He brushed off her question and was nothing like she thought he’d be. Buddy was betrayed by friends.
They are well into the school year. These are people he’s become close with, people he trusted. Even if they’re just stomping on rats in the woods, adventuring parties have to trust each other because you can’t be distracted by wondering if your party has your back when you’re facing a big monster.
Buddy, who came to a new school, bonded in some way with the Rat Grinders. He genuinely seemed to like everyone he met despite trying to “save” them. We know that’s a product of how he was raised and not necessarily indicative of who he is. He found a group and connected with them and in return, they slit his throat without hesitation.
Both clerics were betrayed by someone who was supposed to be there for them. The difference is Kristen was let down by her religion and Buddy was let down by the people around him.
And the worst part? It would be easier if Helio sucked because at least then Buddy wouldn’t be the only one. Kristen would be right, she told him. But for him to see how she and her friends work together and take care of each other in his last moments? That’s gotta hurt more than anything.

I can't stop thinking about Adaine talking to jawbone a couple episodes back.
How she framed her independence.
"it felt good to handle something on my own" coming from the girl who killed her own FATHER. Who had to kill him because no one ever protected her from him or her mother. is. insane. It's not like she's lacking independence or needed to prove that she could do something on her own. She was neglected her entire life. Her parents never cared about her. Never held her or gave her a kind word. They didn't tell her that they loved her or praise her incredible divination. They never even thought about her anxiety disorder. She didn't know that it was something that could be helped. She didn't know it wasn't because she was a coward. Her family teleported away when their house was attacked and didn't say a word. Didn't reach out, didn't try to get a message to her. And let's not forget that the REASON she had to kill her father is because he wanted alewyn to kill her. Because she knew she was the only person who could save alewyn and herself. Adaine has done everything herself, she has handled everything on her own because she had no other option. No one was coming. No one was going to do it for her. And when her only Real parent tells her that he noticed that something was wrong she says "it's okay, I fixed it myself". She says she wanted to do it alone. Maybe she thinks she does.
But I think it's the only way she knows how. I think she doesn't know how to accept someone helping. Much less a father.

The scatter was a fucking AMAZING move from Sibohan/Adaine… she saved Gavin Pundle, she saved Fabian, and she moved other members of the campaign to advantageous places

justification below the cut because it got long but is probably valid to read before you answer anyway:
battle of the brands:
the gunner channel are a 6-person party with the assistance of a large creature/mount (aurora nebbins, CR 3). while they are level three in terms of ship deployment, they are not using those skills in this encounter.
at this point they were level five. they had access to third level spells for the spellcasters, extra attacks for the gunners, uncanny dodge for skip and multitasker for margaret.
they had the opportunity to shop for items before the encounter: this included shield generators, armor, lots of grenades, new weapons, extra psychodrones, and critically, the charge fragmentation used in operation slippery puppet
they were fighting in the battle of the brands-- a free-for-all against other brand champions in an arena with a significant drop; one of the win conditions against each opponent was sending them over the edge to suffer max falling damage.
objectives: fulfilling their contract with acme-ashmun as brand ambassadors, surviving the fight, and defeating the other brand champions
they faced four opponents: smaggy squirrel, brobbin bunny, brutus the corn brutie, and the triangle mint plinth.
smaggy squirrel and brobbin bunny were at the very least 9th level rogues--this puts them at a CR 5
the plinth was a homebrewed statblock--i evaluated it at a CR 14, similar to an elder brain.
brutus the corn brutie was based on an adult green dragon, at a CR 15.
if we go by XP with no multipliers, they would get 28100 for the encounter. well into deadly, with an overall encounter CR of 22.
the last stand:
the bad kids are a 6-person party with the assistance of 4 CR 1/2 summons (mephits) and 2 CR 3 mounts (daymare and hangman)
at this point they are level 13. they have access to 7th level spells for the full casters, paladin smites and functional smites (fandrangor), 7d6 of sneak attack, and the new barbificer subclass, which allows non-concentration spells to be held while raging
they also have access to many magical items: the infaethable bass, the heavy metal ax, the sword of sight (sword of the elven oracle), fandrangor (sword of the elven kings), the teddy bear of helpfulness, the sword of shadows and arquebus, all of which grant unique abilities, including +5 to performance and retaliatory damage, crits on 19 and 20 and max damage to objects, bonus action divination cantrips granting the dodge action (true strike), added d6s of damage using spell slots, the ability to hold multiple concentration spells, misty step, magical tranq, net, and signal flare bullets.
they were fighting in the last stand; a simultaneous academic exam and fight against an endless horde of monsters.
objectives: answering questions correctly, protecting the proctor, and lasting as long as possible. the bad kids were granted a preparation round for spellcasting and ability activation and a surprise round on the first wave of creatures. read my notes here for their academic preparation.
they faced a total of 39 opponents of varying CRs. these are sorted below into the waves that the bad kids faced them in.
first wave: otyugh (CR 5), 3 ochre jellies (CR 2), gorgon (CR 5), hydra (CR 8), 8 skeletons (CR 1/4), and a mimic (CR 2)
second wave: manticore (CR 3), shrimp dragon (CR 7), roper (CR 5), umber hulk (CR 5), and 8 stirges (CR 1/4)
third wave: wyvern (CR 6), crab man (CR 5), 8 rust monsters (CR 1/2), pentacorn (CR 6), and a purple worm (CR 15)
if we go by XP with no multipliers, they would get 37500 for the encounter. well into deadly, with an overall encounter CR of 27.

I genuinely love that Adaine is the one who hates Kipperlily the most. Like Riz is set up as her narrative foil and apparently Kipperlily has hated him since freshman year. Kristen is her political rival and the one pressing her buttons. But Adaine, the one who she's had 1 conversation with is the one who hates her the most. It's also really ironic seeing how the rat grinders have hated the Bad kids for so long without the bad kids knowing, only Adaine is the rat grinders and Kipperlily is the bad kids.
Like imagine if/when they actually square off with each other. Kipperlily has always been ready to fight Riz rogue to rogue, then she started her preparation on how to kill a cleric like Kristen. (Maybe Buddy was practice) But then as she's laying out a big speech, the Bad Kid's fucking high elf wizard comes in and slams her fist into Kipperlily's face before initiative is even rolled screaming about how much she hates you when you've only had 1 conversation with her. Sure you were a bit snooty, but this crazy bitch is a wizard and punching you. What would you even do to that

Incorrect Fantasy High as (sometimes adjusted) things me and my best friend have written in our quote book:
(pulling from previous posts and adding new)
Kristen: You don't know me, you just know my horny thoughts.
Season One Adaine: I am... Horrifically unmedicated.
Fabian (about Riz): He's the perfect size to chuck
Adaine: We are the same breed of... Ayda: mentally ill?
Kristen: It's a fucking corn nut, it's not supposed to be sweet
Fabian: I just want to go fast. Zoom, zoom.
Fig: Just because I'm being a bitch doesn't give you a right to hit me in the tit.
Gorgug: hey dad, guess what I inherited from you? A high alcohol tolerance and Rage.
Riz: I don't theive much, but when I do it's for the clues
Baron: As a ghost my bones wouldn't pop. As a skeleton they DO pop. Click clack click clack click clack
Fabian: Helio nerfed me so he gets to face the consequences.
Gorgug: This guy thought this cat's name was cummin? That's cumin—dude do you not cook?
Fig: I don't like that babies have bones.
Kristen: Helio was a lame ass virgin... Maybe I should stop being mean to Helio
Riz: Call you a bitch? I can't do that! I'm a man!
Fig: Actually hold on, speaking of old white men...
Gorgug: What are you a woodchuck?
Fabian that one time: If Helio does exist, I don't think he went upstairs.
Fig: What are you gonna do? Punch me through my pony beads? Nice try. Dumbass.
The bad Parents: My husband/ex-husband is my brother and we coparent my son who is his nephew and son
Kristen: Better to bust a red bull than bust a nut
Ragh: WHAT IF IT LANDED IN THE CRAB!?
The bad kids to Kristen: I am having an emotional crisis and you are line dancing!
Kipperlilly (probably): I don't want to hear a white redhead sing.
