An Important Lesson from the Authors Who Came Before Us
We all know the story of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.
Childhood friends, high school sweethearts, and university rivals.
They showed up at Cambridge with trunks full of typewritten stories featuring talking lions, magical rings, a demon named Screwtape, and a dragon named Smog.
Their Creative Writing professor, James Joyce, famously suffered a fit of apoplexy when he first read their writing. He was so furious over their whimsical stories that he banished them from his classroom and forced them to work as unpaid innkeepers at his pub. He told them they could only come back once they proved they'd learned enough about the "real world" to write stories about "real things, like eagles and children."
Tumblr media
Professor Joyce was forced to admit them back into his classroom when Tolkien wrote his eagles into Middle Earth and Lewis created the Pevensie children to visit Narnia. Their contemporary, Bede Griffiths, alleges that Joyce could be heard raging and screeching about how the clever young authors had willfully misinterpreted his assignment as far away as Gertrude Stein's Edinburgh apartment!
I remember this moment in history every time my professors tell me that I need to change my writing--when they try to get me to conform to a dying format. When they tell me that my Land Before Time fanfiction isn't appropriate for a class on Immigration Stories and Travel Narratives. When they tell me that my Babe fics "can't" be considered an essay on Orwell's Animal Farm.
Won't they feel silly in a few decades, when there will be sold-out university courses focused on studying work like mine.
There's a reason James Joyce's work has never been turned into movies. There's a reason his fandom is practically nonexistent.
Tumblr media
The only reason we know his name is because he was a footnote in the intertwined heroes' journeys of authors who weren't afraid to try something new.

The Oldest Of Friends
Day 2: Friends & Love | Rain & Clouds
Second day of @manweweek AND IT'S STILL TUESDAY, I'M ON TIME! I love their friendship so much (@cilil baby girl, I know you wanna ship them, you have my permission go ahead, go ham, green light means go) so so much, I think it was one of the things that first stuck with me when I read the silm. I mean, unless I imagined the whole thing. Wasn't there something about them working together?? Correct me if I'm wrong XD
Anyway, I REALLY wanted to draw Manwë under the rain, I'm doing everything on a time crunch but I would love to try again with more time and mind to put into it.

A Tudors OT3 verse in universe tumblr post about The Tudors in that universe. Very much inspired by @nocompromise-noregrets to whom Ellie belongs.
I regret to inform the tumblr that I have sunk into depths of clownery previously thought of as impossible. I am the Mariana Trench of Fail. I am not serving cunt, I am serving nothing.
It starts with going to my girlfriends cousin regular pub quiz because they were out a person and I know Some Things and also hey, free snacks!
At the start of this I want to note this was pre Unmasked Part I airing and I had No Fucking Idea. I was just there, sexualising Rupert Graves and James Frain and thinking oh what a great enemies ship need to smush their faces together and also their dicks.
[insert that meme about being in hell looking for Fail King Hugh Norwich here in retrospect also thee iconic post by dansemacabrebutts, Ioan I am in your clown shoes]
So I was chatting to one of the quiz team and turns out she’s (a) watching the show and (b) definitely a Fandom Person and we get on to shipping at some point and so I open my mouth like “isn’t the sexual energy between Norwich and Cromwell off the charts charged? Can’t wait to write porn about them”
She looks at me with the kind of pained expression that I have only seen in parents of small children watching them spill paint on themselves for the fourth time - in the awareness that really, it’s their fault for trusting them with the paint. At first I thought oh maybe it’s an anti thing? (She’s not a restorationist which was my second notion because my girlfriends family would Kick The Fuck Off and listen, Restorationists do not carry Tolkien merch at all - especially not that gorgeous print of the wedding of Bard and Thranduil from the estate)
“I think that’s something you’ll have to wait and see about” she says and my cousin in law is looking at me like they want to disown my entire family line back fifteen generations.
I think oh that’s an odd answer and kind of shrug and change the subject awkwardly and we don’t really talk. And then like a week later I watch Unmasked Part I. And then they have the after show interviews and:
GUYS THAT WAS THE ELLIE WHO DISCOVERED NORWICHS PAPERS. YES THAT ELLIE. I WILL BE MORTIFIED ON MY DEATH BED. I WAS NORWICH GLORIFYING TO THE PERSON WHO WAS THE VERY FIRST PERSON WHO HAD TO READ HIS WORKS. MY COUSIN IN LAW IS RIGHT TO DISOWN ME DISHONOUR UPON MY NON EXISTENT COWS. I am putting on the clown makeup and the shoes as we speak.

okay, all is fine, but still:
Sauron/Finrod THE WAY Findo is way darker after the song of power duel. Sauron found a way to change his fea and it made Ingoldo not a beast, but a powerful wizard, who is Sauron's alliance now. and maybe- you know what i mean- not only alliance, but his dark husband, because Sauron LOVES that dark power of him and those new cruelty and despicableness of him :)
please kill me already what am I thinking about;)))))

@leschanceux sent: "keep safe. i would not like to hear that you were gone for good." ( aragorn & legolas! )
Tumblr media
Packing up his satchel for the journey back to his father's kingdom, Legolas gives pause at Aragorn's... unexpected words. Not because the Prince does not know his companion's heart, but because neither of them are over-prone to thinking on mortality. Not until recently, anyway...
Legolas half turns, regarding the Dúnedain over his shoulder. Aragorn is closer than he realized, close enough for Greenleaf to reach out and cup the curve of the man's cheek in his palm. "...I will not leave these lands until you do, Meleth." The Prince smiles in the way the makes his whole face soften, his thumb brushing the dimple hidden by Aragorn's facial scruff. "...on that, you have my vow."

Five Things You Might Find in My Fics
@shredsandpatches tagged me in this a month ago and while I do also love navel-gazing about my fic and talking about it, I've been busy with other things and then forgot. But I've done it now!
Angst, angst and more angst. I've been told on good authority that "extremely upsetting" is my hallmark and sure enough, the #1 additional tag on my AO3 profile is "angst" and the #2 tag is "heavy angst" so it checks out. Even the fics that aren't meant to be upsetting have a bit of angst in them. I'm not very good at keeping the angst out but then I don't think I ever really try, it's just not very interesting to me. I think for me, I'm interested in character histories and how they carry that around. It's probably telling that I got obsessed with the Epictetus quote, "you are a little soul carrying around a corpse" some years back.
Sympathy and nuance. Hopefully this doesn't sound too up myself... I don't like the sort-of goodies and baddies, devils and angels that so much historical fiction and a great hunk of fandoms in general do. I like the idea that everyone has their own complex personality, that while the story might be from one character's POV, if we moved into a different character's POV, everything would be different particularly if that character is in some way in opposition to the first character. I usually end up loving everyone and just get a bit "now you might think Henry IV is a bit of a cock and he is a bit of a cock but he is my cock!" levels of defensive.
Family issues. Probably part of my interest in character histories, I'm just very interested in the issues within family. Give me a character with daddy issues, with mummy issues, with brother issues, with sister issues and I'm there for it. Honestly, I could barely understand anything in the Henriad the very first time I watched it but I understood Prince Hal's daddy issues. The family issues I write don't really reflect my own family issues but I do find them interesting to explore.
Characters grounded in context, the ordinary. I'm not quite sure how I'd describe this. I tend to be happiest playing within the bonds of the universe, at least as far as it can be recovered, than to reject it to write a sort of power fantasy? I'm not particularly interested in like, the idea of writing female characters as some "yas kween slay" type of character. I'd rather ground their character in (my attempt to recreate) their "real" context than an idealised, perfect-for-modern-consumption world.
My own thing. I guess this is sort of a cop-out answer and also related to the above but in general, I'm not really interested in following sort of trends? It's not to say that I don't, can't or won't like popular things in fandom but I'm more interested in like, hitting my Id's happy spot than like writing something that I know the fandom will like. I've tended to be interested in more obscure figures or gotten into things past their heyday, even if they are now judged "basic" by fandom (hello, yes, I turned up late with Starbucks for Loki in 2017). And stuff that's really popular in fandom can hit me as, like, overexposed and make me. a bit. y'know. tired and less interested in it? I guess it's a sort of thing of "well, everyone else is writing that so I don't have to and it's a bit boring when everything is like that". Like, the fanon about dwarven culture that came out of The Hobbit films - potentially, very interesting! But everyone was doing their own version of the same thing ("the stuff in Tolkien's books is an Elf lie and dwarven culture looks like 2010s fandom's idea of a progressive society"), so I found it more interesting to do something more in keeping
Not tagging anyone since it's taken so long for me to do this but if anyone wants to, please consider yourself tagged by me!
