I’m going to be attempting the February prompt challenge by @creativepromptsforwriting, mostly if not completely in Fallout 4. This is a little late but better late than never!

Side note: I wrote the majority of this in the early hours of the morning, so it isn’t my best work. I hope you enjoy it regardless.

Pairing: RJ MacCready/F!Sole Survivor (Andi Miller) (not canonical to the big story I’m working on)

February Prompt, Day 1: Love Letter

Robert,

Don’t worry. Even though I’m calling you by your actual first name, you’re not in trouble. Honestly, it’s the opposite. It’s been a month since you left for the Capital Wasteland, and I miss having the best sniper in the Commonwealth at my side. Hopefully you’ve made it there safely by now, and have Duncan in your arms. God, I hope the medicine works. Please let me know.

It’s been quieter here without you. It feels like it was yesterday when I met you in the VIP room of the Third Rail, not the year it’s actually been. When I first met you, I originally thought you were a bit of an ass with how you greeted me. In your defense, it was Goodneighbor and you were the first mercenary I’d ever met. Your shooting saved my ass more times than I could count in those early days together. You helped me get better at it, and we became a damn good team. I’d been wanting to pay you back for it, so when you told me about the Gunners, I figured that would be a good opportunity. We tore through them, and I still say I had one more than you on my tally. I think that was the day we became friends, though I already considered you my friend sooner than that. You gave me back the caps I hired you with and told us we were even, that you didn’t like owing debts. But I would have done it for free.

We were in Diamond City and I had just haggled with Moe about a pay increase for the baseball stuff he wanted when you asked to talk to me. I guided us to Takahashi’s and we talked over bowls of noodles. You opened up to me for the first time there and told me about Little Lamplight. How you were the mayor of a cave of children (I would have loved to be a bloatfly on the wall to see the stuff you would have gotten into), and left at sixteen. Just another thing we share, although I was kicked out by my parents. I think that was the day I started to see you as something more.

When we stopped in Goodneighbor to get more information about the runaway Cabot daughter, we called it a night and lounged in the VIP room I’d hired you in months ago. It was there over a glass of whiskey that you told me about your family. Your wife Lucy, and your little boy Duncan. How Duncan was so sick, with a disease from the Old World. I’d only heard about it from my brother when he was researching it, and how Med-Tek was working on the cure for it. That cure was exactly what you needed. At first, I was disappointed to learn you were married. Confused the hell out of me at first. But, I was also happy for you because of the way you looked when you talked about her. Love like that was hard to find before the bombs dropped, probably even more so now. Besides, who wouldn’t want to be with you?

That’s why I made it my mission to get that medicine, no matter what happened to me. You both deserved to have your son healthy, have a chance at a family. I barely remember anything from when we took that place on, mostly because I’d ended up injecting myself with enough Psycho to take down a yao guai by the end of it. We were covered in blood and bits, and I’d screwed up my left arm by the time we got to the sublevel. One of the ferals had started working on your other duster sleeve, thankfully it didn’t break skin. But everything we went through was worth it when I placed that cure in your hands. I’ll never forget that expression as long as I live, the sheer relief and happiness on your face. Then you hugged me. For the first time I could remember since I had gotten out of the vault, I felt safe. I felt like I was home.

It took a couple of weeks for the caravan to get to Goodneighbor, and we spent it doing odd jobs. The last big job we did was taking back the Castle. I thought we weren’t going to make it a couple of times, the damn overgrown lobster wouldn’t stop dousing us with acid. But the tide turned when I dragged out the rocket launcher that was half buried in one of the rooms. You looked like you were having the time of your life shooting it once it was on its last leg, any fear you’d felt gone. In the aftermath those ocean blue eyes of yours sparkled when you talked about how that was going to be one of the best stories for Duncan yet. That night after the mirelurk boil, you brought me to the top of the fort and we sat there under the stars. You gave me the figure that Lucy carved for you, and told me about her.

My heart broke for you when you told me how she died, and how some days you wished you’d died with her. I understood that feeling more than anything, but it was important that you knew that I was glad you were still here. It ended up coming out as it counted for something that you saved your son. When you told me that I helped you like Lucy did, I wanted to tell you how I felt. How I still feel. But you were going to leave the next day, and it didn’t feel right. That, and I’m a bit of a coward sometimes. But now, I have to go somewhere I may not come back from. And I have to go alone. It may be selfish, but I need you to know this before I go.

I love you, Robert.

I love all of you, even the parts of yourself that you hate. You are honorable, kind, and strong. I can already hear you fighting me on the first two, and it’s not going to work. Because it’s the truth. You changed from who you were, you’re no longer that person. And it’s been an amazing thing to watch.

A part of me will always love Nate, just as I imagine a part of you will always love Lucy. But I know that Nate wouldn’t want me to spend the rest of my life mourning, and he’d want me to be happy. He said as much before he was sent to Anchorage. I’m ready to move on. If you aren’t, or you don’t feel the same towards me, that’s okay. Just know that no matter what, you’ll always be my best friend.

Hopefully this letter makes its way into your hands. By the time you get it, what I’m going into will be over, for good or bad. I hope to hear from you soon, and that I’ll be here to read it.

MacCready had read the letter three times now over the course of the journey, and was starting on a fourth when a man’s voice brought him out of the focus he was in.

“Coming up on Goodneighbor now, just letting ya know.”

Giving the caravan leader man a nod of acknowledgment, he carefully folded the slightly worn letter back up before placing it in the inner pocket of his duster. What was she thinking, going somewhere so damn dangerous by herself. It had been six weeks since MacCready had gotten that letter, and he’d been slowly going insane ever since. Lone told him to go, and he only agreed when she told him that they would all follow after they finished packing. He’d planned on moving to the Commonwealth for some time, it was a lot better than the Wasteland. More stable, and safer. He was just waiting until Duncan got enough strength back to travel. Safety, and the woman he’d come to love was there too.

MacCready didn’t know when he’d fallen in love with Andi, but he had. It scared the hell out of him at first, because he didn’t think he could love anyone after Lucy. He also feared losing another person he loved and cared for. But there was one major difference between her and Lucy: she knew how to fight. Lucy could fire a handgun pretty well, but that was it. He’d had to teach her how to shoot, but it hadn’t saved her that rainy night. But Andi? Good god, she could fight. He could picture her in his mind, leaping into the fray with her combat shotgun and nailing anything that got in her way. When she was disarmed, she was able to hold her own pretty well in hand to hand. And after he taught her how to snipe, it became her preferred method. He could still see the look of joy on her face when she hit the center of her first long range target, how her auburn hair looked like fire with the sunrise hitting it. She wasn’t perfect at combat, but she was far from defenseless. The caravan coming to a halt right outside Goodneighbor’s gate pulled him out of the memory. Grabbing his rucksack, he gave the leader some extra caps as thanks before starting towards the door.

MacCready hadn’t wanted to leave her, he wanted to help her find Shaun. But he had to make sure that the medicine got to Duncan, and she had agreed. He didn’t trust anyone else to put it in the right person’s hands. Well, one other person, and it was the woman who wrote him that letter. He wanted to tell her how he felt after Med-Tek, but it wouldn’t have been fair to tell her and then leave. But if he knew she was going somewhere dangerous, he would have stayed. Put the vial with Daisy for safekeeping, then continued traveling the wasteland at her side. He would have told her exactly how he felt about her, just how much he loves her. Damn it, why didn’t she say anything to him? The thought of her no longer being here made him feel numb. But there was no way she was gone, he refused to believe it. She was too stubborn and strong to go down, not without one hell of a fight. Those were part of the many things he loved about her.

He needed to give her a reply, and in person was the only way he would do it. As he heard Daisy greet him when he walked through the gate, he just hoped that she was still here to hear it.

Finished Baldur's Gate 3 today. Something I've not done with many narrative games, instead getting caught up in making new characters. I've not finished Skyrim (or Morrowind), nor Dragon Age Origins. I completed Oblivion once, The Mass Effect trilogy once and Fallout 3 once, Fallout 4 three times. Dragon Age Inquisition twice. I still have like 40+ Tavs so I have plenty of playthroughs to do if I feel like it.

Anyway, BG3. It was really good y'all. :) In some ways I benefited from not completing it before now. I got the option to send Karlach to Avernus with Wyll, and I got the post-adventure gathering that Withers put together, for my first playthrough.

I've seen some posts about the % of players who have completed the games vs started it, or gotten off the Nautiloid, or finished Act 1. I took some screenshots of them, but at the same time I'm not sure how accurate they are. I know for Elder Scrolls/Fallout games I play with mods and never cared about the achievements, so they are always disabled for me and not part of the statistics. I imagine it's the same with a not insignificant number of BG3 players as well. (I plan to mod BG3 as well, I just wanted to make a Tav playthrough and a Durge playthrough before I start in on the mods.)

I also don't know if the stats on the achievements are updated every time you open Steam/look at them. Is the 50,7% of players who have completed Act1 from august 28th when i got it, or from february 3rd when I looked at it today?

Also, the numbers of allies who showed up to help in the final fight, as well as all the letters you get in the little camp get-together, were both really cool moments. The allies coming together to help you was a real cool and emotional payoff for all the quests you've done and people you have helped during them game.

The letters were less awesome but in many ways more touching. Especially hearing that Arabella is a student of Elminster, Alfira has a successful bard school, thanks to Lakrissa saving up her waitress wages and buying a house for her. Barcus, leading the Ironhand gnomes and making peace with the Gondians, doing great work in the rebuilding (and saying that 'it's not a big deal really'), Jaheira's kids doing great work in the city with Jaheira herself being alternatively proud and worried about them.

Halsin being a father figure to a gaggle of kids in the cleansed lands around Moonrise Towers and Orpheus and Lae'zel meeting with the gith'zerai leader to form an alliance it also both cool and sweet.

Also, Scratch and Anji playing fetch with the now inert Astral Prism. XD

Props to Larian for sneaking in a post credits scene too. Seems Jergal is not happy at all with how the Dead Three has conducted business in the Domains he once held sway over.

Were there any lawsuits over the "sampling" of copyrighted music on the Fallout 1 & 2 soundtracks? Were royalties paid for the samples? I love Mark Morgan's work, but it is rather blatant. Great blog btw!

Hey, thanks for the question and thanks for the compliment! :D

In February 2008, Mark Morgan was asked the following question during an interview on website, Game-OST:

“Timothy Cain said that he likes dark gloomy music and is a big fan of Aphex Twin. Some Fallout compositions are quite similar to work by Aphex Twin - were you influenced by Timothy's tastes?”

Mark Morgan replied with this:

“When Interplay was thinking of using me for the game, they sent over some music that they liked and wanted me to do something similar as a demo. The CD they sent me had no titles or artists’ names, just a few pieces of unidentified music. I gave Interplay what they wanted and I think they must have used some of my demo in the final game. At the time, I wasn’t familiar with the work of Aphex Twin. To me, it was just my interpretation of what Interplay asked for.”

On October 10, 2022, Tim Cain said this in an interview with website, DualShockers:

“I had so much of this music that I gave the list of my music to Mark Morgan and said I wanted the game to sound like this." Included in the list were Brian Eno's Discreet Music, Ambient Works 1 and 2 by Aphex Twin, and a CD called Ambient 4: Isolationism.”

From the information provided above, Mark Morgan was not familiar with Aphex Twin at the time, and he was providing Interplay with what they asked for. We're not aware of any lawsuits regarding the use of any samples, however.

Additionally, in an interview on January 28, 2015 with website The Audio Spotlight, Mark Morgan provided a list of gear that he used during his time on Fallout and Fallout 2:

“At the time I was using a NED Synclavier as my workstation controlling a few midi synths and modules like a Nord 2, Virus, PPG 2.3, Jupiter 6 and a rackmount synth called a Morpheus by EMU. The Morpheus, like a lot of the rackmount modules in the ‘90s, had this little screen with tons of pages to figure out which made programming painful, but once I figured out the programming architecture it yielded some interesting clangy metal sounds and some strange ambiences, which became a big part of the palette and sound of Fallout.”

A Sunday 7

- I woke up choking on my anxiety at about 415. Its money related, and it's very real stuff that's getting more real by the minute. There's options, thankfully, but theres already fallout, and it's not good. I haven't had a late payment in so long that the let down is going to be huge when the first one happens. The good news is that I have another interview tomorrow; its a second interview, and it would be a good job for here and my career track. Plus, the CPKC interview went great on Friday; and while it doesn't start till February, there are other things I am going to make happen if I they keep me as a candidate. Fingers crossed yall, please... I hate feeling like I've done everything right and just failed every way otherwise. #capitalismisawful

2. If you are wondering, a rip track is a train track that is adjacent to a main line train track where work can be performed on rolling stock(train cars) that need repair. The number on the engine in the picture? 667, the neighbour of the beast. Coincidence? I don't know, but I thought it was funny.

3. Our Henry won 3rd place in the gingerbread house in the community building contest. He won 20 bucks and a cardboard house that had to migrate back to our house in the back of my VW. It might have been a win for him, but it was a loss for his playroom. #toomuchjunk

4. Speaking of Henry, prednisone for healing an upper respiratory infection turned him into a lunatic. 2 more pills till we get our somewhat normal child...hopefully.

5. I owe a few of you a note, but please be patient. This time next week I'll finally be done with my BS. Finally... then I'll be able to look at the moon like it was in that slightly odd picture or play my guitar a bit more like the pic in the bottom right.

6. And since everybody on here is doing their year wrapped on Spotify, mine was...well the same 5 bands I've been listening to forever. I figured there would be more Joan Baez in there, or maybe ZZ Ward, or even Mme Swift, but nope. I did get called an alchemist for my musical tastes, and my Canadian friends will appreciate that a town on lower Vancouver Island called Nanaimo(its a cool place) is most likely my musical tastes.

I mean... that says a lot.

7. I'm probably gonna bore yall with saying this, but thanks for all the good energy and love lately. Just reading your blogs has been helping me get out of this funk. And its a hard funk, with other things I can't talk about yet because I'm still trying to make sense of them but yall are helping me so much. Much love to all, and keep up the good work- you're killing it!

Today was my first time posting fma fics second year anniversary. It saddens me that this year I haven't been able to write as much as I used to- not because of life- but because I can't. My brain can't work with me when it comes to writing.

January was spent on writing a chapter for “ took my kids take my fire.” fic, which took a lot of energy to do since that fic has been draining to write as of late- as much as I love it and it is so dear to me, it has been hard putting out new chapters for it.

When I posted that it was in January the 24th, I started two birthday fics for Ed’s birthday- due to me joining in few completions for the clubs I am in in real life, I wasn't able to write and finish Ed’s fics.

I fell ill after that, on February 12th to be exact my health worsened all of a sudden, and I was admitted to the hospital on February the 15th. Spent 4 days there and I was just so drained when I came back home.

The rest of February, and the whole part of March I wasn't able to think of any ideas, the writer's block was so severe. Reading and writing was a hard thing for me to do. Especially parental fics ( be it parental Roy, Riza, Reigen or Loid) for some unknown reason. Then I tried doing something for Roy’s birthday fic but now it is sitting in my drafts and I only wrote like a couple of lines in it. Around Roy’s birthday I had a fallout with a close friend of mine and that fall out left me super confused and also, drained. Unable to really do anything.

Today tho. I was able to start writing a fic for my anniversary. God, I was able to think of an idea, and start writing it. And actually making paragraphs that made sense! I wasn't able to finish it since today was busy - the good kind of busy - but… I feel like I finally made it!

Point of this post I guess is that hey, I am alive, working on art for some big projects and I am going through some tough things in life and being your busy girl. Fics will come, and they might be less than 2023, but I promise, I will try my best to post some things soon

Starfield will get updates every six weeks beginning in February 2024 💭 I’m left shockingly cold by the opening minutes of Starfield, and haven’t even bothered to finish lift-off from the starting planet. It all just seems so generic, in contrast to the weirdness of Fallout 4’s opening, or the world-building and Big Plot Stuff that occupied the beginning of Skyrim. There’s only so much they can patch, but I hope they improve it.
