A Republican lawmaker has been boasting about delivering $1.4 million to a children’s hospital despite having voted against the bill that secured the funding.
In a press release earlier this month, Rep. Maria Salazar (R-FL) said the doctors and staff "at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital are nothing short of miracle workers, and I am proud to support their work in Congress."
Salazar also shared a post on X showing her handing over big checks to hospital representatives.

*EDIT* Annnnd the campaign is over! THanks to all of you who were able to support us! In the end we sold a total of 954 Scratches and 893 Scritches. That's the most amount of plushies we've ever sold in one go, fingers crossed this gives us a good chunk of change to get Ep 4 underway!
We'll update everyone on everything once the 1st of Feb hits.
Just under 3 hours left to grab the cat boys before they're gone forever! Every purchase goes towards funding ep 4!

The Town of Stony Plain and other municipalities across Alberta are wondering how to best approach a population influx alongside long-standing infrastructure deficits given annual funding from the province fell well short of their request. The Alberta government in its annual budget, which was introduced last week, committed $722 million towards the new Local Government Fiscal Framework (LGFF) capital program. The LGFF replaces the Municipal Sustainability Initiative as the province's primary funding foundation for municipal infrastructure. Stony Plain Mayor William Choy says the funding simply isn't enough for the Edmonton bedroom community of 18,000 as it addresses $28 million in infrastructure projects this year. The town is receiving $2.1 million in provincial funding this year for infrastructure through the LGFF.

8/14: (edited for fixing grammar on Poc, thank you for correcting me!)
So I don't currently live in Houston but I did live there for a year. If you haven't heard about what's happening in the Houston Independent School district, which is a school district that makes up a very large amount of Houston (see map below the cut), that school district is looking to completely cut all funding for library staff, and replace that with a task team for children "behavioral issues", and creating a place to send children with "behavioral issues".
If any of you know what it's like to grow up as a kid labeled having behavioral issues (hi, im queer and neurodiverse, and while I am not a POC many poc are also labeled as having behavioral issues just for existing), you know exactly what this means.
If you don't know what this means, it means that children who are poc, queer, and neurodiverse are all more commonly labeled as having behavioral issues, behaving poorly, and being problem children, just for existing.
So what can you do about this? More below the cut
(And if there is anything else that can be done that people who currently live in Houston can add on to the post that would be greatly appreciated!)
The Houston Independent School district makes up a large section of Houston and is divided into multiple areas.
4400 W 18th St, Houston, TX 77092-8501
(713)556-6005
Do not send them anything that would endanger the staff, any students, or any parents. Many staff students and parents do not agree with this or have zero control over this.
In addition, you should do research into who the governmental representation is in the city of Houston in the areas covered by the Houston Independent School district (an image of the school district and its sections can be found below, as well as an image of the city council district map).
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Call the city council representatives of these areas that are also affected by the actions of the Houston Independent School district. Send them letters.

[ENG] hii, I'm in dire need for financial help, the prices for my college fee skyrocketed and so far I haven't got any income since I opened art commissions. If two people buy 20$ worth of art you would save my life. I need to reach my first goal before the 8th of March. Would be thankful if you at least shared this

Yall I hate making personal posts like this. Genuinely. I try to keep my personal real life away from social media. But christ I'm struggling here.
I have really severe ADHD. I cannot work or function or do anything without my medication. I physically can't. But right now my medication is completely unaffordable for me.
I've been applying everywhere I can, but I live in a college town so the competition really fucks me over. I mean, which would they rather pick, a competent college student, or an adhd/autistic dropout who never learned how to mask properly?
And recently, I got dropped off my insurance plan. And thanks to me being unable to work decent jobs, I haven't earned enough to file enough taxes to qualify for affordable Healthcare. The only Healthcare I legally qualify for is a Healthcare that's $300 a month when I'm living off pocket change.
I really hate to ask, I do, especially since right now I'm without my medications so I can't get many things done, if at all, but if anyone is willing to help me out, I'm doing $5 doodle commissions. I'll work down the queue as best I can, it'll be slow but I'll do my best.
Link to my Ko-fi for assistance is below. I appreciate the help. Currently I can get a one month prescription of my medications for $45. So I'll be able to get it relatively soon but I need to save up so I can afford it each month.
If you're not able to assist that way, any advice on how to afford medications (I already use GoodRX) or any suggestions on jobs, would be greatly appreciated too.

How Funding Affected my Journalism Jobs
The different places I’ve worked as a journalist, and in related fields, have all had different funding. Here are my experiences at different places–and it seems to me that grant-funded stuff is the best.
Internship at Nat Geo
Grants sponsored both of the other interns, but not me. Nat Geo makes a lot of its money through things like books at TV.
Mine was low-paid, but probably normal for an internship in 2016? LOVED the experience. Freelance at Nat Geo afterward was MUCH better paid. $14/hour part-time. IDK how much the grant-funded interns made. 2016.
Fellowship at PBS Newshour
A grant from the National Science Foundation funded me, but PBS is state-sponsored media. Interestingly, that’s a huge red flag in China and Russia, but I found the US-funded Public Broadcasting Service very fair to its subjects. Good experience, but even worse pay, at $13/hour full-time. 2016-2017
Job at Newsweek
Their funding is from clicks. This place was crazy bad and paid garbage. Everyone hated it and almost everyone quit, unless they were being fired for making a living wage. Some people even got fired for accurately reporting on the company itself on assignment from their editors–there was no obscuring it, that was cited as their reason for termitation. Newsweek is Hellfire and damnation. I suspect the nonsense demand for 5 stories/day/person and silly demand that we make them go viral stemmed from the following: the fact that the company primarily made its money from clicks and higher-ups didn’t appear to care about the long-term reputation of the company or its reporters, and perhaps an ego-fueled refusal to try to understand what actually got clicks. $39k/year. 2017-2018
Freelance at VOX
Funded by clicks/ads and grants at the time, but halfway through they started a contribution campaign. The difference I noticed between VOX and Newsweek was that VOX practices were smarter and they actually paid attention to analytics and sane business practices. Also, it's much easier to qualify for and get grants if you're actually doing good journalism, so I don't believe that Newsweek's policy of "lots of garbage" was actually business-savvy in any way.
Vox was a good experience, even though I wasn’t working as a journalist, but doing SEO/social media for journalists. $35/hour, then $50/hour part-time. Then I was laid off due to the pandemic. 2019-2020
Freelance at Alzheimer's Association
Remote, not really journalism, but I liked it anyway. Nonprofit, so, funded by donations and grants. $65/hour part-time. 2021
Job at Bay Nature
My job was entirely funded by a grant. Odd situation–I got the grant and I could bring it to any legit journalism employer. Bay Nature was supposed to contribute 40% of my salary but flexibility happened and they just paid health insurance and such. They got basically no money at all from clicks, like, pennies a year. Not much from subscriptions. They have fundraisers, and at the time, there were 3 writers/editors and 2 fundraisers on staff. Later they hired another writer whose entire salary was paid by a philanthropist, and then I’m told they got another salary funded by a UC Berkeley journalism grant program. So, like half of their editorial staff was grant-funded.
Great experience, but low pay for the Bay Area. $50k/year, all from Poynter-Koch, 2021-2022.
Freelance at Politifact
A nonprofit and they probably get lots of grants. My particular position was also funded by a grant entirely. Loved it. $250/article fact check. 2022.
Book
REALLY love it. $50k is from MIT Press, which is a not-for-profit, and it gets some grants and endowments. Then I got $56k from a grant from the Sloan Foundation on top.
Future?
I also got $500 (plus gas and hotels) to attend a day of learning with a program called Investing in Wyoming’s Creative Economy, and that means I’m one of 100 people eligible to apply for 10 $25k grants for future projects. The idea is to support creatives to stay in Wyoming and have sustainable businesses here. Maybe do some art that will bring in tourists.
_____________________
Note that a grant sort of does, and sort of doesn’t, mean free money. It means money to support a project that usually has to have a mission and a public good, like educating the public. You don’t pay these back, and the org giving the grants doesn’t require a percentage of the profits or anything. But, for instance, the $50k grant from Poynter-Koch was more like a gift to Bay Nature, so they could pay me, and I worked for a year to actually have the funds.
However, I’m not yet convinced that there is any objectively good funding model to ensure the most fair and accurate journalism. In theory, the capitalistic ones would be the best, but the public desire to read inflammatory stories about how their political enemies are evil, or a different generation is full of idiots, adversely affected the accuracy of headlines at Newsweek IMO.
You might think that the worst funding source would be Poynter-Koch, which is a program run by Poynter and funded by the Charles Koch Institute. But neither Poynter nor Koch even asked me to tell them what I was writing, let alone try to stop me from writing it. (Poynter hosted mentor-led auxiliary groups to talk about our careers/lives and such, so the topics of our articles came up sometimes if we chose to share that.)
Anyway, I’m thinking of writing an article on how funding models affect journalism, for better and worse. There are some high-profile examples of grant funding causing harm. But for now, the above is my experience–pretty much all good, except not enough funding sometimes.

I know it’s gonna be ✨a while✨ when animation production starts for ep4 so I wanted to ask what you’d consider good things to add in a reel when animators apply.
Also, do you have an estimate on when you’ll be looking for animators? 👀
For reels, I'm always personally looking for a variety of things, the main ones listed below; -Ability to show off your adaptability to different art and animation styles -Ability to lip sync well -Ability to show off good frame economy (animating on 3's and 4's)
-Ability to animate more subtle movements
With our current support level we can afford 10 minutes of full animation on ep 4, which totals $36,000 (Talked with our animation crew and they're happy to have a new pay rate of $60 per animated second ($30 for roughs $30 for cleans, up from $20.)
Right now we can't physically afford to hire anyone else. If our funding situation improves then we may do a call for more animators.

Hi friends.
For any contribution of 5 euros or more you'll be offered a lil doodle from me.
I've never done a crowdfunding before but I made one for my lil sister.
She rescued a babycat, Maetyka, and some days ago she started to stop drinking eating urinating and pooping. We all thought it was an intestinal obstruction, but the vet refused to check and remained fixated on gastroenteritis. In an emergency, they had to operate a week later... For intestinal obstruction.
Tumblr media
On top of that, the vet's fees were exorbitant, 1400€ while the other vets ask for arounf 500€...they wouldn't even give a discount for his misdiagnosis and the danger they put the cat in.
For any contribution of 5 euros or more you'll be offered a lil doodle from me. Just dm me the screenshot of your donation and what you d like as a doodle.
The bills amount to 1700€. My sister is a student and receives half of this bill every month.
I'm calling on your solidarity to help her pay her veterinary bills.
But even 1 euro can help! Or just a reblog would be a great help.
Thank you 💙
