Can I just rant for a bit, cause I keep seeing the “Jet was right to try to get Zuko arrested for being FN” take, and just. There’s that silly post that’s all “imagine finding out that the Starbucks cashier is in a cult lol”. And I think people are misunderstanding that being fire nation is and ethnicity, not a group you join. You can’t choose to be a fire bender. I hate doing 1:1 comparisons, but it’s more like if Jet lost family members in 9/11 and then started reporting Uyghurs to the cops.
And really, I do hate making exact real life comparisons, but that is way closer to the reality of the Jet situation than either the silly cult comparison or saying that Zuko “lied” because he didn’t want to tell someone who it wasn’t safe to reveal himself to that he was fire nation. Just the way people talk about it has some majorly bad implications. Especially since Zuko and Iroh really were hunted refugees at that point.
Honestly, I agree with you.
Obviously, the situations aren’t exactly the same--Jet’s village was wiped out by an oppressive power, rather than a splinter-group of terrorists who are not actually representative of their nation, so his anger towards the Fire Nation as a whole is a lot more justifiable (if not the actions he takes because of that anger)--but the point remains that he was choosing to condemn people based on something they could not help and his assumption that they were spies rather than terrified refugees just trying to find a way to survive.
And the people who claim that he was right (and justified) in attempting to out Zuko and Iroh to the dai li are wildly off-base. It genuinely doesn’t matter that Zuko was a (disgraced, exiled) Fire Nation prince (which Jet had no way of knowing and didn’t even consider because that wasn’t why he had such a fixation on ‘exposing’ him) or that Iroh was the Dragon of the West (which, again, Jet had no way of knowing, and the question of why no one within Ba Sing Se’s walls recognized him is another matter entirely), because none of that was evident or had anything to do with what Jet wanted to expose them for.
It would be as if someone shot and killed a street magician in the city because street magicians had killed his parents after conning them. It wouldn’t matter if the street magician he killed was later revealed to have been a serial killer with a bunch of bodies hidden in his basement--he’d still be going down for murder because you can’t just haul off and kill a guy you have no reason to suspect is actually guilty of a crime. (Or even if there is reason to suspect as much, but bear with me, I realize metaphors only stretch so far.)
Others have pointed out (probably more eloquently) that suspecting Iroh and Zuko of being Fire Nation spies (especially with the massive scar on Zuko’s face that was very obviously caused by firebending) made the least sense as a conclusion to which one might jump, especially in the middle of a war where much of the Earth Kingdom had been actively colonized for a century. There are a lot of reasons a teenage boy with a scar on his face, traveling with his uncle in obscurity, might be a firebender and still a victim of the Fire Nation rather than an aggressor. None of them involve him being a Fire Nation spy trying to infiltrate the city. (Particularly since he... wasn’t. At that point, as you say, he and Iroh were genuine refugees fleeing for their lives from their own people.)
Do I think that Jet got a raw deal? Absolutely. I think he deserved more respect than getting brainwashed into being Nice and then getting killed by a stray rock, a fact which was only confirmed (and then joked about) after the fact an entire season later. I think he should have been allowed an arc of actual growth and then gotten some closure in the form of being able to fight alongside the Gaang and the rest of the Freedom Fighters in Book 3. But I don’t think that acting as if he was right--rather than unhealthily obsessed with ‘exposing’ Zuko (who could have been a firebender for a lot of reasons that weren’t ‘Fire Nation spy’, many of them awful to think about) for absolutely no reason--is the way to go.

Hi!! I’m not sure if you write for Chris noel but if you do could I please request some soft (gender neutral) headcanons for dating her?
Headcanons of little things Chris N. would do in a relationship with (gn!) reader
<Attention: Modern AU where Neil lives, and Welton’s a boys & girls school. Warnings: Fluff; Light smut in red (+16 content, TV-MA, if you’re under 16y or feel uncomfortable with the prompt please do not interact!); > Note: Y/n - your name/ Y/Ln - your last name/ Y/fn - your friend’s;
First of all, I AM SO SORRY FOR HOW LONG IT TOOK ME! I've been really uninspired in the past months and didn't wanted to write it half assed. Second, I wrote Chris as a Hyper Feminine girl and the reader as a Welton student, hope you don't mind.
Also, here’s my Chris playlist, hope you enjoy it!
Tumblr media
font;
Dating Chris is fun and endearing. She's an energetic girl and will never leave it to get boring, it's like every day is a new adventure! She has soft hands and exploring touch.
Chris will show you her love by introducing you to her friend circle. She will invite you over to every party and walk with you side by side, showing you off to everyone! She's proud of the person she loves and is proud to have you by her side.
You can also expect her to make you the lead role beside her in her life, she'll ask your opinion on everything and encourage your participation in her activities (please go watch her cheerleading!).
She will dance, do skincare routines, shop, watch Netflix, and gossip on the phone with you. If you let her, she'll also love to do your makeup, nails, and hair whenever you're going out, and it's bonus points if you're matching outfits!
Gorgeous gorgeous girls love thrillers! And as a gorgeous girl herself, she's simply addicted. Chris can AND WILL talk for 40min in a row about her theories on different international investigative cases.
Here are the top 5 movies she watched with you while doing a face mask:
The Silence of the Lambs (1991), because you don't argue with classics;
Gone Girl (2014), and it became a tradition to play twinnem by coi leray at Amy's monologue about the cool-girl... GO BEST FRIEND!!!
Shutter Island (2010);
Disturbia (2007), and after this one, she elaborated with you how Mr.Turner was defeated by his own stupidity since he underestimated what a bored teenager is capable of.
Split (2016), she cried... a lot.
Her pet name for you would be accomplice, as an internal joke to the movies you watch together.
Chris is a very communicative person, so if something is bothering her you will hear about it. Don't worry, she loves to hear you too, go on and complain about that mean math teacher who didn't give you the proper grade, let her roast him for you.
She's also someone who will try to solve any problems that come between both of you through talking. But if things get nasty, she might get a bit sassy... be careful with that.
Also, she will not ask but PLEASE, BUY. HER. FLOWERS. I'M BEGGING YOU. And hold her hand, if you do the basics of chivalry I promise you she'll melt away.
She will notice when you're upset and simply spoil you. She'll drive to your dorm, pick you up, give you Starbucks, shop some new pretty things she knows you wouldn't buy for yourself. Then she'll drive you to her house and do a self-care day. If you wanna talk about it she'll be prone to listening, if not, no worries, she'll take good care of you anyway.
Chris sees you as captivating and interesting, she thinks very highly of you and tries her best to support your dreams. Her attitude towards you will always be of pride and excitement, she knows you'll go far and wants to contribute to your path (in addition to making it more fun as well).
She also loves to do the peck+giggle combo while caressing your face and glancing mischievously at you. She likes to tease and will go on as long as you're having fun!
Finally, she loves sharing the bed with you in your dorm room (her house won't do it, mainly because of her parents, but whenever she visits you, she'll share it with you!). It's whispering and giggles all through the night until one of you falls asleep.
Hope you like it! I take requests by ask! (info on requests);
Also, you’ll find more of my writing here.

New Star Wars.
The call it the final chapter, but everyone knows it aint.  There is too much money left in it to stop.
I remember the first one in 1977.  It was a fun movie.  It was juvenile and a bit silly.  Growing up I had seen a lot of “B” movies on the local TV stations filling the air time.  Classic Cliff hangers and adventures were the rule.  I saw traces of all that in the Star Wars movie right down to the salute to the serial opening credits.
In the old days short serial films were shown in movie theaters before the feature.  30 minutes of fun ending in an impossible to escape situation at the end.  But every week the next installment came out and the hero always escaped or rescued the girl.  These stories kept people coming back to the theater with their nickles and quarters. It was a simple ploy.  They were just the right length for TV too.
In the 60s these films were on TV often.  It was good filler between game shows, variety and soap operas.  During the summer school holidays I watched a lot of TV.  I guess George Lucas did to.
Star Wars was interesting as it was a mix of really cheap stuff with really good stuff.  It is like Starbucks coffee, a really carefully made good quality bad product.
Anyone who saw the original in 1977 and most people later saw the HUGE plot holes and problems.  Why does R2D2 gibber away in electronic noise rather than talk.  Everyone seems to understand it, but still FN appliances talk today.  It is just a chip.  Of course Lucas dug even deeper plot holes with every later movie.  The most egregious being Anakin Skywalker being a child meeting his future wife.  Well that seems less weird now If you know who the President of France is married to, but it is a bit creepy.  People get arrested for that now.
Actually in the #metoo era they should acknowledge that Carrie Fischer was not treated that well in 1977.  No underwear in space for girls.  Creepy. She developed a substance problem after that.
Again just on the R2D2 thing, no upgrades ever?  Hell a two year old Iphone is obsolete, but how old is R2D2 now 60 or 80 years old?  The basic form of the character was to fit a dwarf human inside to work it as remote controls were crap back then. Computer animation was a distant dream. Absolutely not the right shape or form to do repair work on a space ship in flight.   I am an engineer and things like that irk me.  In “Silent Running” 5 years before they made more convincing droids that were animated by injured Veteran Amputees.  Lucas knew about that surely.
Oh and how come Darth Vader had no idea his son was living in his old home?  Take Luke to live in the home of his grandmother, Vader will never find him!  Please give me a break.
But for all that a rich mythology has been created.  I have seen all the movies.  I have video disks of all but the last one.  I like em and work to ignore the short falls.
But that makes me think.
Star Trek can make all those same claims.  It was a TV series and it broke a lot of new ground.  It got stuck in places in the movies they made.  Famously only every other original movie was good.
And what did they do with that?  A full reboot. Use the mythology, Use the timeline and just start again.  Arguably it is a better series than Star Wars now.
That would be very worthy plan in Star Wars.  Clean up the Anakin bit and please have him meet Amidala as a teenager at least.  Oh and please lose the pouty whining kid attitude.  Also make some credible story about Luke’s upbringing where Vader would not be likely to find him.  Make R2D2 a credible mechanic if that is what it was supposed to be.  C3P0 is at least a person in a costume, but lets not have him be built by Anakin.   Make a plausible story as to why Obiwan does not immediately recognize those droids he used to chum with when he was Anakin’s friend and teacher.
Yes a full on Reboot.  Better product and lots of fodder for debate.  You can be sure every fan would lap it up.  More tickets to sell and many films to make.
I will see the new one.  Lucas is not running it so I hope for no more stupid plot holes.

Welcome to Pollapalooza, our weekly polling roundup.
Poll of the week
Fifty people have been indicted in the largest college admissions scam the Department of Justice has ever prosecuted, in which wealthy parents are accused of manipulating standardized-test scores and faking athletic accomplishments to get their children admitted to selective universities. In light of this news, we wanted to see what Americans think should matter in the college admissions process, so we looked at a Pew Research Center survey released last month that asked respondents to determine whether eight criteria should be “major” or “minor” factors in the college admissions process, or “not a factor” at all.
The top criterion Americans thought colleges should consider was high school grades — 67 percent said grades should be a major factor and another 26 percent said they should be a minor factor. Although some schools — including the University of Chicago and Wake Forest University — have stopped requiring standardized test scores as a part of the admissions process, 47 percent of respondents said performance on such exams should be a major consideration and 41 percent said it should be a minor one. (Americans were not asked whether scores should count less if, as the DOJ alleges, the applicants’ parents paid for someone else to take the exam.) Community service was rated the third most important factor — 21 percent of respondents said it should be a major factor and another 48 percent said it should be a minor factor.
Conversely, respondents in the Pew survey felt that athletics shouldn’t be a high-level consideration, which must be a disappointment for parents who, according to prosecutors, paid to make it look like coaches were recruiting their children. Just 8 percent of Americans said athletic ability should be a major factor in college admissions, while 34 percent thought it should be a minor consideration.
Outside of this scandal, the most controversial aspect of college admissions has historically been affirmative action. Americans have long shown a dislike for considering race and ethnicity in the college admissions process. The Pew survey was no different, with 73 percent saying it should not be a factor, even more than the percentage who were unimpressed by the idea of legacy admissions (68 percent said that whether a family member had attended the school should not matter). What’s more, a majority of adults, regardless of their own racial or ethnic backgrounds, said race and ethnicity should not be a factor in college admissions — 78 percent of non-Hispanic whites said so, along with 65 percent of Hispanics, 62 percent of blacks and 59 percent of Asian-Americans.
The responses in the Pew poll suggest people want merit to matter most in deciding who gets into college and who doesn’t. But as this week’s indictments show, the reality of that process is far more complicated.
Other polling nuggets
Monmouth University polled Democrats and, similar to other surveys, found former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders leading the potential primary field with 28 and 25 percent support, respectively, while Sen. Kamala Harris ranked third with 10 percent. In head-to-head GOP primary matchups, President Trump topped 70 percent support1 among Republicans when matched up against former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld or Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan. Still, 40 percent of Republican respondents said they preferred that Trump face a primary challenger compared to 53 percent who wanted Trump to go unopposed in the GOP nomination process.
In a survey of Florida voters, Quinnipiac University found that 51 percent said they will “definitely not vote” for Trump compared to 31 percent who said they “definitely will.” Another 14 percent said they would consider voting for him. These numbers are similar to national polls that have also asked a version of this question.
In that same Quinnipiac University poll, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis received high approval marks. Fifty-nine percent of Floridians approved of his job performance while just 17 percent disapproved, despite the 2018 gubernatorial race being both extremely close and deeply contentious. According to Quinnipiac, this is the best mark for any Florida governor in the past 10 years.
A poll from Emerson College showed Trump trailing five different Democratic candidates in head-to-head matchups in Michigan, which was the state decided by the narrowest margin in the 2016 presidential election. The survey showed Biden with an 8-point lead over Trump, Sen. Amy Klobuchar up by 6 points, Sanders up by 5 points, and both Harris and Sen. Elizabeth Warren up by 2 points.
In that same poll, Emerson College also tested a hypothetical matchup in Michigan’s 2020 Senate race, and found Democratic Sen. Gary Peters neck and neck with Republican John James, who made an unsuccessful attempt to oust Sen. Debbie Stabenow in 2018 and who may run for the state’s other Senate seat next year. Peters led 44 percent to 43 percent, well within the margin of error.
In a Minnesota poll, DFM Research asked about the 2020 presidential race and found Klobuchar ahead of Trump in her home state, 52 percent to 35 percent, with former Starbucks CEO and potential independent candidate Howard Schultz receiving 7 percent.
A Reuters/Ipsos survey found that 64 percent of Americans support “Medicare for All,” or a policy that would offer government-funded health care to all Americans, but a majority of Americans wanted to continue to allow enrollment in private health insurance plans. Only 25 percent wanted to “completely eliminate private health insurance.”
For the second time, Prime Minister Theresa May’s proposal for the terms under which the United Kingdom will withdraw from the European Union failed in a parliamentary vote. Afterward, a Politico-Hanbury poll found that 50 percent of U.K. voters said May should resign versus 32 percent who said she should not. When asked whether there should be a new general election, 42 percent said yes and 38 percent said no.
Trump approval
According to FiveThirtyEight’s presidential approval tracker, 41.6 percent of Americans approve of the job Trump is doing as president, while 53.5 percent disapprove (a net approval rating of -11.9 points). At this time last week, 41.9 percent approved and 53.3 percent disapproved (for a net approval rating of -11.4 points). One month ago, Trump had an approval rating of 41.5 percent and a disapproval rating of 54.1 percent, for a net approval rating of -12.6 points.

(Les mer om GRI her: https://www.globalreporting.org/Pages/default.aspx)
Rapportering etter GRI A+ inkluderer Nestlé aldri har rapportert i detalj på tidligere – som menneskerettigheter, mangfold og kjønn, klimaendringer, biologisk mangfold og korrupsjon.
Vennligst les hele rapporten her: http://www.nestle.com/Common/NestleDocuments/Documents/Library/Documents/Corporate_Social_Responsibility/2011-CSV-Report.pdf

“kylo ren is an antagonist because he puts obstacles in the way of the protagonists"
here follows a comprehensive list of the main obstacles encountered by the protagonists in tfa:
– starkiller base (very much shown to be hux’s baby: “on this MACHINE WHICH YOU HAVE BUILT, on which WE STAND”)
– shooting down finn during his escape attempt (overseen by hux, kylo does absolutely nothing else except stare off into the distance murmuring “fn-2187” then leaving again)
– the pursuit of bb-8 (hux: “well then, if it’s on jakku we’ll soon have it…” / kylo: “i leave that to you”)
– the destruction of hosnian prime (ordered by snoke, carried out by hux, with kylo watching from the finalizer)
– the imminent destruction of d'qar, the resistance base (ordered by snoke, carried out by general hux)
this is followed by a comprehensive list of internal conflicts faced by the characters in tfa:
– rey’s abandonment issues (caused by someone of unknown origin)
– finn’s wish to flee (caused by trauma from his time in FO)
– han’s fear of going back (caused by not feeling he deserves leia anymore/leia now hates him, and his own grief over kylo’s turning)
and following that list, here follows a comprehensive list of actions taken by kylo ren in tfa:
– acts as enforcer, killing lor san tekka and the tuanul villagers and interrogating poe on behalf of tfa but leaves the actual obstacle of searching for bb-8 to hux
– is told by his master, snoke, of his father’s involvement and does nothing by insisting his father means nothing to him
– doesn’t turn up again for a good portion of time until we see him talking to his dead grandfather’s helmet worrying over the fact he can feel the light (“supreme leader senses it”)
– turns up at takodana 15 minutes late with starbucks and goes after one girl
– looks into girl’s mind
– “the map. you’ve seen it.”
– “we have what we need.”
– carries rey bridal style to his ship in the middle of an ongoing battle
– interrogates her without the violence of his interrogation with poe
– tells his captive the following:
“you’re my guest”
“don’t be afraid, i feel it too”
“it’s in there. and now you’ll give it to me”
– roundly gets his ass kicked mentally by said captive
“you… you’re afraid. that you’ll never be as strong as darth vader!”
– gets the scolding of his life by a gigantic hologram for his fuck-up
– insists he can get the map from the girl when hux reveals they know where the resistance base is hiding
– destroys the very rig his captive was sitting in when he discovers she’s gone
– has tantrums like this so often that the stormtroopers just slink away instead of coming to his aid
– strolls around starkiller then abandons his search when he senses han on board
– doesn’t see han standing right there
– weeps in front of his dad and says very clearly “i'm feeling torn apart”
– “i know what i have to do but i don’t know if i have the strength to do it”
– kills han solo
– immediately feels weakened afterwards (confirmed in novelizations)
– gets shot by chewbacca
– runs after the traitor, finn, and that scavenger girl
– says the one cool thing he’s ever said in his life: “we’re not done yet” and probably mentally high-fives himself
– defeats finn, but not before getting injured by said ex-stormtrooper who has never wielded a lightsaber before that moment
– tries to retrieve his grandfather’s lightsaber like his uncle did before him in esb
– has to fucking launch himself back like he’s a goddamn contortionist because said lightsaber goes ‘LOL NOPE’ and goes straight to rey
– looks like he’s going to have a boner for a hundred more years at the mere sight of rey holding the lightsaber
– backs her up to a cliff as a planet crumbles around him, never once actually attacking her despite the fact she turns her back on him numerous times
– then, instead of killing her at her weakest point or pushing her off the cliff, he yells at her to be his student
– most intense open day ever
– LITERALLY… JUST… KEEPS STANDING THERE WHILE SHE SUMMONS THE FORCE
– THEN IS REALLY SURPRISED WHEN SHE FUCKING NUKES HIS ASS AND SLICES HIS FACE OPEN
– THEN STARES AT HER LONGINGLY OVER A CLIFF
– WHILE THE PLANET CONTINUES TO COLLAPSE AROUND HIM
like, i’m not saying kylo’s innocent. what i’m saying is that from the beginning, kylo’s on a separate path, which starts with the guise of a an antagonist (killing of randoms, turning to the dark side) but tangles with the paths of both protagonists, finn and rey, instead of outright conflicting with the narratives (which is the duty of an antagonist), and revealing himself to be carrying his own inner conflict – which is something that never happened with darth vader in the OT until the third movie. (he learns of luke in esb, but has no thought of redemption or going back to the light – in fact, he chops off his son’s damn hand, making luke’s character arc, of staying in the light and not giving up on the fallen, all the more satisfying.)
i guess the irony is that people who want to call kylo ren an antagonist when he can’t even succeed very well at actually being one, don’t realise that that’s precisely what his character arc is.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s bid for the Democratic presidential nomination is good news for liberal policy activists. And that’s whether she wins the nomination or not. The Massachusetts senator appears poised to serve as a progressive policy anchor in the 2020 Democratic field, pushing the field — and the eventual nominee — toward aggressively liberal policy stands.
How might Warren have such influence? Because the Massachusetts senator is planning to release detailed and decidedly liberal policy proposals on issue after issue. Her rivals, if past primary campaigns are any guide, will feel pressure to either “match” her on policy by coming up with their own proposals, say that they agree with Warren, or convince the party’s increasingly left-leaning electorate that Warren’s proposals are too liberal. And remember that presidential winners usually try to implement their promises — so an idea put out by Warren in March could be in Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand’s platform in August and be signed into law by a President Gillibrand in 2021.
Here’s an example of how this works, from a past Democratic primary. Early in the 2008 campaign, John Edwards released a comprehensive plan to provide health care for millions of Americans. A few months later, then-Sen. Barack Obama, looking to compete with Edwards among liberal voters and activists, put out a similar proposal, which was the basic outline for the Affordable Care Act he signed into law as president.
In the 2020 Democratic nomination process, I expect that other candidates will also have lots of policy proposals. And Bernie Sanders in particular is likely to join Warren in pushing the Democratic primary debate to the left. But Warren is likely to be at the forefront of the “policy primary,”– the one-time Harvard professor is perhaps the wonkiest person in the field. And Warren knows how to push her ideas onto the national agenda quite well. Before she was elected to the Senate, Warren convinced congressional Democrats and President Obama to create the agency now known as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Warren campaign aides told me that unveiling major policy proposals will be a big part of her candidacy, with the ideas intended to reinforce Warren’s broader message that the country needs “big, structural change,” not just incremental tweaks.
“I’ve been working on one central question for 30 years,” Warren told me in brief interview after a campaign event in Greenville, South Carolina, on Saturday, “‘what’s going wrong with working families across this country, why is America’s middle class getting hallowed out?’ I never thought I would come into politics, not in a million years, but that was my chance to fight bigger, back in 2012, when I went to the Senate.”1
“Getting into the presidential race means I can talk about the kinds of big, systemic changes we need to make,” she added.
“Warren is an unusually wonkish, policy-focused figure, not just attached to some concerns … but very specific and knowledgeable about them,” said David Karol, a University of Maryland political science professor and expert on the presidential nominations process, in an e-mail message.
Karol said that Warren’s potential effect on the 2020 race is analogous to four years ago, when Sanders seemed to push Hillary Clinton to take more leftward stances than she might have otherwise. If Clinton had been elected president, she would have felt pressure to implement some of those liberal campaign promises, which would have made Sanders’s 2016 run particularly important in shaping U.S. public policy. But Karol argued that Warren is somewhat distinct from Sanders, because in his estimation, she is more attuned to the finer details of legislation. So Warren might push the rest of the Democratic field to the left and force Sanders, who is already very liberal, to be more specific in explaining how his proposals will work.
“[Warren] has a deep mastery of policy, a staunchly progressive voting record,” said New York-based liberal political activist Sean McElwee, best known for advocating for the abolition of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, in an e-mail message. “She’ll be a real contender and will force every other candidate to get smart on policy and push the boundaries of what it means to be a progressive.”
So what are Warren’s ideas? It’s worth separating them into two general categories: ones that she is one of the principal authors of and those where she has embraced someone else’s proposal. The latter is important too — Warren taking up an idea while running for president can bring attention to obscure proposals written by backbenchers on Capitol Hill.
Here are some major Warren-authored policies:
A 2 percent annual tax on household net worth between $50 million and $1 billion, and an additional 1 percent tax on household net worth above $1 billion.
Bans on members of Congress and other top officials in Washington from owning individual stocks while in office and doing any kind of lobbying after they leave office.
Postal banking, a requirement that all U.S. post offices offer checking and saving accounts to Americans who want to sign up for them.
Federal manufacturing of generic prescription drugs.
The removal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan.
A reduction in the overall Department of Defense budget.
Federal funds to help first-time homeowners make the down payment on homes if they buy in neighborhoods that suffered in the past from redlining.
A requirement that large corporations reserve 40 percent of the seats on their boards for board members selected by workers at the company.
A ban on the U.S. using nuclear weapons first in a military conflict with another country.
A $146 billion “Marshall Plan” for Puerto Rico.
Here are a couple of proposals written by others that Warren has embraced:
Medicare-for-all;
The “Green New Deal,” a proposal championed by New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey to limit fossil fuel use in the U.S. in order to address climate change..
There are two caveats to this analysis. First, Warren’s influence on policy rests on her remaining a viable candidate, appearing in the debates, regularly visiting the early primary states and not, say, dropping out in May of this year. Second, I think Warren will particularly affect candidates, like Sanders, who are competing with her for support among liberal Democratic primary voters and activists like McElwee who comprise the party’s left wing. So Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who appears to be targeting more moderate Democrats, may not feel that she has to match Warren policy-for-policy.
That said, even more centrist candidates are likely to feel Warren’s pull on the race. Journalists and activists are going to ask candidates like Klobuchar if they support single-payer or Medicare-for-all. That will create pressure on those candidates to address Warren’s proposals, even if in the end they call for a less liberal variant — some kind of Medicare option for people between ages 50 and 64 instead of Medicare-for-all, for example. And Warren is likely to come up with ideas on issues that disproportionately affect blacks, Latinos, and young voters, three other key electoral blocs in the party. More moderate candidates can’t concede those voting blocs, so Warren’s proposals on issues that affect those voting blocs will likely influence all of the candidates.
So watch for Warren’s ideas — in some ways separately from Warren. A week after Warren unveiled her wealth tax, Sanders put out a plan to vastly increase the estate tax. I’m not saying Sanders proposed that idea only because of Warren’s move, but he might have proposed it so early in the presidential race (even before he officially announced his candidacy) because he felt pressured to match Warren. I would assume many Democratic candidates will put out proposals to vastly increase taxes on the wealthiest Americans — even if they aren’t as aggressive as Warren’s proposals. And his opposition to Warren’s wealth tax seems to be one of the primary reasons ex-Starbucks chief executive Howard Schultz, a one-time Democrat, is considering an independent presidential run.
So while Warren’s poll numbers put her behind some of her rivals right now, she’s already having an outsized influence on the race — and I would expect that to continue.
