[Video] Greece: Scenes from the riot in Exarcheia after a 16-year-old kid was shot in the head by cops
It was during the early hours of Monday 5 December 2022, when a 16 year old kid was shot in the head by a greek police officer of the DIAS motorcycle unit during a car chase in Thessaloniki. He was accused that he filled his pick-up truck with 20 euros worth of petrol and left the petrol station without paying.
Following the news and his dire physical condition, riots erupted in the city of Thessaloniki, located in the north of Greece, later on the same day. At the same time, in Athens, several different protests were held in the evening of December the 5th. The protest in Exarcheia, held in front of the memorial of Alexis Grigoropoulos, (a 15 year old kid that was shot dead by a cop on 6 December 2008, sparking the events that would lead to massive riots all over Greece, known as the December Revolt) soon turned into a march that led to a riot, as seen in the video.
It has to be noted, that today 6 December, protests have been planned in dozens of cities and towns all over Greece, in remembrance of the December Revolt and the murder of Alexandros Grigoropoulos by the police in Exarcheia 15 years ago to this day.

Exarcheia carnival is not just a self-organized street party. It's an act of protest and resistance For the last seven months, Exarcheia is under siege by invading police forces. The scenery that sometimes resembles a war movie is an actual reality for those living in this subversive and historic neighborhood in central Athens, frequented by leftists and anarchists for many decades. And it is exactly that sociopolitical character of the neighborhood that the government wants to destroy through the establishment of “Gaza Strip” type of occupying police forces in every street corner of the area. And the excuse to bring these occupying forces with their guns and bullets and their asphyxiating gas grenades was given under the pretence of “upgrading” the area. By means of constructing a metro station right on top of the only open space square in the neighborhood, instead of the National Archeological Museum a few hundred meters away. At the same time, another enclosed construction site guarded by dozens of cops has been set up on Strefi Hill, a public space offered to private interests to use it for their own profit. They want to turn Exarcheia into a huge Airbnb and an “amusement park” for tourists. But they didn’t count the people’s resistance to their plans. Following seven months of resistance, actions and protests, in an attempt to reoccupy the public space away from cops and construction fences, the residents of Exarcheia self-organized a carnival - protest. In their own words, they said in their call for people to join the festivities: "From the ancient times and the Middle Ages until today, the carnival is the profound popular celebration in which the world acquires a sense of unity and collectivity, dethrones its dynasties and takes over the reins of its life. It's the "celebration of the mad"! Those "below" come up, the habits and practices of the "powerful" are degraded, the revelry comes to liberate body, soul and spirit from daily oppression. There is, perhaps, no more fitting celebration for us and our struggles. For a neighborhood like ours, which with its daily practice tries to resist those who oppress it. Whether we're talking about an authority that carries guns and shields or comes with bulldozers and drills or holds briefcases full of money, the carnival is here to lay it bare! The carnival is not only a disguise, it is not only entertainment, it is not a product to be consumed, but an imaginative and daring proposal: to take back our lives in our hands, to expose the hypocrisy of our "masters". So we invite you to meet again in the streets. With music, costumes, songs, and shouting slogans. We are not spectators, we are the persons who act. We don't attend the carnival, we create it and live it. Our streets, our celebration in our neighborhood!" Until we meet again!"
