#Eva’s character needed to be addressed

In Defense of Jacks in ACFTL
I do have spoilers, so this is your warning not to venture further if you haven't finished reading.
First off, I love how the story was told and how it ended. Could we have gotten more of the other characters? Yes. Did we really need to? Maybe, but I certainly didn't mind the absence. I didn't think we needed to address every character that we've met. We saw Castor and Lala, and I was happy about it, but I was strictly here for Evajacks story, and that's what I got.
I think Eva and Jacks had character development in this novel.
Eva isn't as trusting and hopeful as she was in the previous two books, and I was happy about it! Girl was getting murder attempted on her, and her husband is a narcissistic, manipulative psychopath. The only people she could trust were 1) being kept away from her or 2) avoiding her because they thought they were doing the best thing for her if they did so *cough* jacks
Jacks watched the girl he loved die! He blamed himself for what happened to Eva, and then continued staying away because he felt guilty and thought he was keeping her safe in doing so. He didn't know Apollo took Eva's memories away. He was too busy making sure Castor didn't go within 10 feet of Eva because Castor did attack Jacks after he went back in time to save her! He was still around Eva, he was just hiding in the shadows or out in the balcony peering through the windows. He genuinely thought Apollo was the better choice for Eva because at least Apollo hadn't done anything to her (as far as he knew).
Jacks apologized to her under the phoenix tree, saying that when he went back in time, he thought the stones would have taken something from him, not Eva, or are we all ignoring that because of that beautiful love confession Eva gave? He wanted our girl to live! When Eva met Castor in the Cursed Forest, Jacks literally put a knife through his best friend's chest in fear of having a repeat of the first timeline! Castor wasn't even doing anything, he was just trying to have a conversation with her.
Jacks was the tortured lover we all knew him to be. He wasn't Jacks, Prince of Hearts, with a trail of deadly kisses in search of true love in this novel. He was Jacks of the Hollow, a man who loved his girl so much he wanted her to live instead of dying at his kiss. We all know how badly Eva wanted to kiss him, and we all know Jacks can hear her thoughts. Can we blame him for staying away? He literally said that if she died again, he could not bring her back. The idea of that was terrifying to him. He already used the stones, and going to Honora would have the possibility of turning her into a vampire, maybe worse.
Jacks felt different in this novel because he finally admitted how much he loves Eva. We've seen him do so many things for her throughout the series. Was he holding back in the other two books? I'd argue not really, but he certainly wasn't going to let her be with him. He didn't want to admit he was in love with her. Dude literally held her like a grudge in the first novel, a secret in the second novel, and then a promise in the third. The hints were there for us. He would literally do anything for her. He just didn't want to admit to himself he loved her because if he allowed himself to there was the possibility that she could die.
Does Eva die in this book? No, thank god. But don't act like you read their kiss scene and didn't fucking break a little when Jacks went "No! Not again".

Hi, it's me again. Why didn't Bryce meet elain in cc3? Was it some sort of a spoiler for her next book? Was it because she has hidden starborn powers like Bryce and SMJ didn't want Bryce and Elain meeting for a chance that either Elain os Bryce powers will start to glow when meeting eachother? I want to know your thought on this please 😁
Hello again! 🥰 I’m not Sarah, so I can’t say for certain, but I think there are a few different possibilities.
No such thing as bad press. Sarah and BB benefit from the tension among shippers and the mystery of who is next feeds that tension. It creates free buzz for them and helps them make more money.
Maximizing pay off. In an interview with Eva Chen, Sarah talked about planting secrets in acosf that she plans to pay off in the future. While it would’ve been nice to have seen Elain interact with Bryce in hofas, it makes sense for Sarah to save Elain-specific reveals for her book, where we will be able to fully appreciate her perspective and the hidden layers of her character and powers.
That said, we were given important information that strengthens set-up for her story:
Power: We learned that Rhysand is related to the Starborn and in acosf Sarah explicitly told us that the sisters were a match for him in power. That could mean they possess Starborn magic or raw magic that matches it in might, which might explain why they're marked by Wyrd. Elain's gifts (whatever powers she has, as Amren said in acosf) are mostly unexplored and might just be the answer to the plot threads hofas illuminated.
The Mask: Bryce had a Made object on her body and leveled up her Starborn power in hofas, allowing her to activate the magic of the Starborn blades and use the Mask without issue. Even Hunt was able to use the Mask because he had Bryce’s power in him temporarily. But when Nesta used the Mask, she struggled to come back to herself after killing the wyrm. This should prompt a conversation among the IC: Is this because she returned her magic? Or interfered with a bargain? Or does the Mask have some innate, soul-devouring magic that functions like a curse, as Rigelus warned? @offtorivendell pointed out that Cassian questioned the cost to Nesta’s soul when Amren said the Mask made her unstoppable. It seems there’s something to that and since Bryce returned it at the end of hofas, we will likely learn more.
Starborn blades: We learned that while Azriel has been carrying Truth-Teller all this time, he doesn’t seem to know how to activate its magic. And holding both of these blades at the same time seems to bother him. But we did see Bryce use them together without issue (like the Mask) and based on what we saw of Truth-Teller’s magic, it’s even more likely that Elain activated its magic when she stepped out of shadow, out of nowhere, to kill Hybern with it. In other words, if it hasn't been addressed already, the IC should be asking questions about how Elain used the blade to appear when/where she did, and what that might mean for future exploration and use.
Asteri’s secrets: There are more secrets hidden in the land by the Asteri that will need to be uncovered. Vesperus mentioned the sacred sister peaks, so at minimum, we will be spending time mapping their secrets and rooting out the remaining Asteri influence on the land. As @offtorivendell, @silverlinedeyes, @willowmeres and I have theorized, the Asteri's lingering secrets might be connected to Koschei and his efforts to free himself. Not only does this sound like an ideal plot for a gardener, but Elain might’ve been given her vision and gifts for this exact purpose.
Stone Mother: Mother, Cauldron, Fate = Wyrd. We learned that the Asteri warped her Cauldron form into a tool of destruction. Pure life used to blossom from her womb. This could explain why she loves Elain and, at her core, would never hurt her—Elain is a kindred spirit and might represent what she used to be. Wyrd also used to rest in the heart of the Night Court, which is yet another hint that we will be exploring the mysteries beneath Ramiel.
The Helscape beneath: Bryce noticed a Helscape beneath the land in the cavern illustrations, making us wonder just how entwined these two worlds are and hinting at future interactions (via sight or portal) with the Princes of Hel and their creations (yes, please).
I am not sure exactly where Sarah will start the next acotar book. As @silverlinedeyes theorized, it could be a tandem read that includes Bryce's arrival and discoveries in Prythian. I could also see Sarah starting from an IC meeting where the characters are in an uproar and trying to process all that has happened, which might include descriptions and flashbacks of important scenes. Nesta and Azriel interacted directly with Bryce, so they will be responsible for reporting on those activities. It would make sense for those conversations to include what Azriel observed of Nesta's struggle with the Mask, what Nesta observed of Azriel's reactions to the Starborn blades, what they learned about the Starborn, Asteri, Trove, and Wyrd from Silene and Vesperus.
And once the weapons Bryce took are returned (which is fairly quickly, given the short timeline), Nesta will need to share what Bryce said to her. Personally, I imagine a scene in which the IC discusses (or more likely argues about) what Bryce shared, the Starborn blades aglow on the table. During this exchange, Elain is noticeably distracted, her focus repeatedly drawn to the blades until she finally blurts out, "Can none of you hear them? It's impossible for me to focus with their incessant chatter."
And that’s how we learn Elain can understand the Starborn blades and has been listening to their colorful commentary on everyone in the room the entire time.

I actually finished Monster a few days ago but I will state my feelings on it for posterity's sake: I think Monster, while composed of a number of well written and evocative vignettes, ultimately fails to execute its overall emotional arc well. If the story had been explicitly framed episodically with an overarching B-plot connecting these episodes, I might feel more positively towards it, but the fact that it must nominally develop its "main plot" each chapter while devoting most of its screen time to tangentially related stock characters was extremely frustrating. None of the twists or reveals actually felt consequential because information about the main plot is fed to you so painstakingly and in a way that's so repetitive that its conclusion is largely predictable and almost anticlimactic.
Monster ultimately does not do a very good job of developing any of its main cast. Its story and characters warp around Tenma, who is just not very interesting. I was frankly just fed up with him and the unilateral adoration that every character holds for him by the end of the story. Nina was extremely underdeveloped for the character she should have been and supposedly was within the story and any pathos that could have been elicited by her was neutered by first having her be barely present for the vast majority of the story, and second by also relegating her into being a Guy Who Just Loves Tenma. Eva was probably the closest any character had to a real character arc and her writing was just so absurdly misogynistic for nearly the entire story I couldn't enjoy any time she was on screen. Johan should have been an interesting character, but the manga got so long and drawn out that by the end I was just fed up with him.
The story overall was weirdly saccharine in a way that felt almost childish in contrast to its intended tone, and while that's not in itself a bad thing, its attempts to portray humanity as Overall Good felt simplistic and often cheap. It kinda goes hand in hand with how horribly it attempts to address WWII. "Well, The Nazis Felt Really Bad About It" and "If You Think About It, Japanese People Were The Real Victims" are not, uh. Themes that show a willingness to contend with complex morality or any real belief in human goodness aside from superficial self-reassurance. Also Urasawa Naoki is insanely insanely insanely afraid of sex.
Ultimately I think Monster would have been way, way better if it had just been shorter and had treated its main plot in any reasonable manner. It had a lot of interesting, evocative moments, and a lot of the ideas of the main plot could have been really good to chew on if the main plot hadn't lost momentum long before it was actually wrapped up. Nina and Johan are given very interesting treatment on occasion, and I have been thinking about their characters and relationship quite a bit since finishing Monster, but the plot was so bogged down in the Various Extraneous Dipshits and the need to conform every aspect of Nina's character around Tenma that there's no actual interesting conclusion to be drawn from them.
I think on an arc-by-arc level, Monster is quite well written, and it has a few really strong moments. It just makes such poor use of its format overall that it sours the whole experience.

Hi. I was going to do a Danganronpa x Total Drama AU, but 'the final killing game' style. However I'm not finding the backgrounds I want for this and it annoyed me enough to just,,, give up on the project altogether.
Anyway, here are the NG I was going to use for it, in case someone wants some ideas (and the reasoning behind them)
For more context, this is supposed to take place right after TDWT. TDROTI didn't happen.
Noah - Passing the Fourth time Limit with Owen Alive (Noah and Owen's friendship has developed during TDWT ; despite his personality, I strongly believe Noah would not put Owen in danger for his own life. I also needed him to not be in the same group as Owen and Eva, given that he was going to be one of the few trying to puzzle out what was going on)
Owen - Putting Food in Your Mouth (Is self-explanatory ; This guy can not survive without food and it would be literally impossible for him to not eat if said food happen to be in close proximity)
Izzy - Being in the Same Room With a Corpse (It literally kills her from the start, which was the whole point ; I also think is fitting for her, given her personality)
Eva - Opening Doors (I can just imagine her getting so mad over it ; Is also the only one able to bypass this NG as she's strong enough to just punch her way through the walls)
Duncan - Going 5 seconds without being seen by another contestant. Time Outs don't count (No one would really want to stay near Duncan, given all he has done during TDWT ; many will think he's the killer because of his personality)
Harold - Answering a Question (That would be an easy NG for anyone BUT him. Harold's a walking Wikipedia, it will be hard for him to not answer any questions)
DJ - Witnessing Violence by Participants (Given his personality this NG makes the most sense for him ; The character that died in the anime with this NG makes me think of DJ, which influenced my decision)
Trent - Opening Left Hand (I wanted to add this NG, that's literally all)
Beth - Running (Also somebody has to have this NG too you know)
Cody - Can't Touch Or Be Touched By Anyone (My AU does not include Sierra or Alejandro due to the injuries they got during TDWT, otherwise Cody would be dead in the first seconds of the game ; I just think it fits for his character and is funny)
Gwen - Revealing Your NG (Which would make everyone suspicious of her.)
Heather - Getting Accused of Murder (I think at least one person would accuse her of killing someone, being as disliked as she was. I just needed her to not group up with anyone, as she's also one of the few trying to puzzle what was going on)
Sadie - Being in the Same Room With Katie (You can tell I wanted to get rid of her fast, as I had no plot planned for her)
Katie - Being in the Same Room With Sadie (Same as Sadie)
Ezekiel - Talking (It can go both ways ; In my AU he talks, as he's confused by his NG. It doesn't need to be this way. You guys can keep him alive if you want)
Bridgette - Witnessing Someone Cry (Again, I think this is fitting given her character. In my AU she was also one of the firsts to die, thanks to Owen)
Courtney - Giving Orders (Fitting, given her character)
Justin - Looking in Any Reflective Object/Seeing Your Own Reflection (I think it would be a challenge for Justin to not see his reflection, but not one he would be unable to overcome)
Tyler - Laying or Sitting Down (Which is torture, given that he's tripping over his own feet more often than not. Again, I saw it fitting given his character)
Before anyone comments about it, Leshawna, Lindsay and Geoff are not here because I couldn't come up with a good NG for them. I was thinking something along the lines of 'Using the Wrong Name' for Lindsay, but the phrasing of the NG gave me enough problems to just give up on it (Basically she would die if she used the wrong name when addressing someone, but I don't know how to phrase it to sound good and make sense).
Sierra and Alejandro are not part of this due to the injuries they got during TDWT. Is canon that Alejandro has been stuck in a robot up until All Stars and, in my opinion, Sierra would not have enough time to be fully healed by the time this 'new season' takes place.
In my version of the AU Chris IS NOT the mastermind behind this, he's actually the first to die. It isn't until Izzy, Katie and Sadie die too that everyone actually believes everything is real and Chris isn't just fooling around (this dude died like at least two times during TDA, no one truly believes he's dead for real)
----
For more context, for those who has not watched Danganronpa 3, here's how things are supposed to work :
One person, known as the traitor or attacker, tries to murder the other participants, while the other participants attempt to identify the killer. Everyone does have a bangle on that they are forbidden to demage or remove (unless they want to die).
The rules are
Rule #1: The time limit. At two hour intervals, when the timer on the bangle runs out, a sleeping drug will be administered, putting all the participants to sleep.
Rule #2: The attacker/traitor. Whilst everyone is asleep, the attacker will wake up and have a certain amount of time to kill exactly one person. If no-one is killed in this time limit, then the other participants win the game.
An assumption developed by its participants is that, assuming the attacker can end the killing at this point, he/she can stop the game by choosing not to kill anyone within the time limit, thereby going undetected or placing the blame on someone else.
Rule #3: Forbidden actions, also known as NG Codes. On each person's bangle, there is a single action that the participant is not allowed to perform. If that action is performed, then a lethal dose of poison is administered. The poison will also be administered if the participants attempt to remove or tamper with their bangles.
Is also specified on the Wikipedia page that the NG code rule can be bypassed by severing the limb above the wrist at the risk of blood loss (yes the rules are copy-paste from the site so you guys don't get spoiled while researching for them)
The participants need to find the traitor and kill them to win the game.

the fact that the ‘eva wants to escape’ quest is optional is genuinely upsetting to me because it’s SUCH a good example of a quest that naturally shows a new player how daniil’s bound relate to him and to each other. like it’s 10% to demonstrate futility/address the inevitable ‘ok why doesn’t he just leave’ question and 90% to show how the utopians work. eva is scared of the outbreak but codependent enough to refuse to leave without daniil (having known him for about a day) and the stamatins. andrey is an old acquaintance of daniil’s and cares for eva enough to casually and sincerely threaten death on anyone who hurts her, but values his brother above anything and won’t leave without him. peter is in a self-induced haze and values his creations enough to refuse to leave them, even in the face of a deadly plague, but has a devotion to maria that can be used to persuade him. maria knows how to pull peter’s strings but needs the stamatins in town for her own purposes and doesn’t want them to leave. it’s such a good little microcosm of pathologic’s character writing and it’s criminally easy to miss

Ok, I said I should do this so
checking the wiki summaries (which i think should be spoiler safe, because they have a separate "solution" section) and tallying scenes where Shannon and Kanon actually appear on screen together, rather than us being told they're close
Episode 1:
after Natsuhi and Eva are mean to Shannon, with the only other person present being Kumasawa (herself suspicious) and Genji (less suspicious? in this particular area at least? but Ronove did say Genji was related to him in some sense, so...) (also looking at the scene myself Genji doesn't seem to actually address Kanon? it still works if you take Kanon out, at least...
Another scene where the only other person present is Genji. Also one where Beatrice being real and Kinzo being alive* is very explicitly stated, so already partially untrue. Kanon chooses not to go with Shannon when he could, which does fit his character, but... (* Yes i'm still certain Kinzo is already dead.) (Also, this is right after the idea that the Beatrice that Maria saw could be Shannon comes up, and right before George proposes to Shannon, which might be something???)
ok wait this isn't that but i'm watching the thing showing all the locations before the first twilight and. I should probably take note of those right. hm.
and then Shannon's "dead", so no more of those
Episode 2:
In one of the flashbacks where Shannon is berated by Natsuhi again... and Kanon only shows up after Natsuhi leaves, so totally alone
Later in the same chapter with the only other one present being Beatrice, who gives them both the same burn on their hands... I don't remember that coming up again, but it might have?
Another scene were Beatrice is the only other person present, and it's explicitly stated Shannon and Kanon are the only ones who can see and speak to her, which is both interesting and, I think, contradictory to some stuff in episode one?
This isn't them together but. I'll just quote the wiki: "Kanon, having heard about the situation from Shannon, brings it up before Jessica can find the words." Having heard about it from Shannon, huh?
"Kanon wonders if Shannon made a part of herself that wasn't furniture." Yeah? Does he?
Another scene where Genji is the only other person present
This is another note: Beatrice knows the layout of the Manshion, which could fit a ghost witch thing... or someone who spends most of her time as a servant. or servants, i guess.
Kanon gets mad at Shannon for agreeing to marry George, which is like... a whole other thing, if they're the same person (or share a body? not discounting plurality as the thing here).
New people! Scene with Gohda AND Rosa! Except I'm almost certain Rosa's in on it this time, so the only real question here is Gohda... Maybe he was part of it in Episode 2 as well?? (And of course, Shannon and Kanon are split up before anyone else can see them together...)
...And then Kanon's dead. Sidenote: Them being the same person would explain the locked room and Kanon's corpse disappearing... but not how Beatrice can declare Kanon was killed in red...
Episode Three:
Not Shannon and Kanon but "Beatrice could just be Shannon in a fancy dress" IS brought up again
Magic scene, I don't feel the need to get into it more here
I have no idea how them both being dead works for the first twilight in this case. feel like figuring out that particular locked room would do a lot for me.
I do find it interesting that the 07151129 number is put where Shannon's corpse is though...
And this is also the episode with the "I'll come back on a white horse" thing, so those might be related? Fits what I'm already thinking
And that's it, i think
Episode Four:
I think the first time Shannon and Kanon appear at all is in the scene where Kinzo summons a bunch of demons, and then it's all magic stuff until they're dead (and we don't even see the corpses).
so, conclusion:
We literally never see Shannon and Kanon in the same room in a scene I trust to be real
I don't know if I want to go all in on "they're the same person", especially considering the snags (how was Kanon dead in episode 2, there's seemingly 2 separate bodies for them in episode 3, etc.)
but there's definitely like... something going on here.

Great news! You're in charge of the new DMC anime, what are you going to do with it?
Oh-oh…shi…ah-ehm….dear anon you caught me by surprise xD
(Putting all under the cut because geeeeez, I didn’t expect it to become this long)
Mmmmmh, what am I going to do with it? Since it’s a different media than the “usual” games, I think I’ll try to decrease a bit the “action” part and delve more into the psychology of the characters, the world building, and all those nice little aspect that are not addressed in the games.
1) as stated in a previous post, I would like to know what happened to Vergil (but honestly also to Dante) in her teen years, from Eva’s death to the beginning of DMC3. It would be nice to see what kind of people/demons they have encountered and what kind of impact they had on the twins lives. Did Vergil found some kind of parental figure or friend during those years? Who taught him the “way of the sword”? And who give him all his knowledge about the demon world and demons?
One nice idea that was suggested was foster families: did they get adopted? If so, what kind of families did they find themselves in?
2) following this kind of thought: when exactly was Vergil able to escape Mundus? What/who made it possible? And what happened in that period of time, before he was able to track down Yamato and Nero? How did he survive an escape from the Underworld in such conditions?
3) another thing that I would like to touch would be Trish, Kyrie, and Nico. Like, in dmc3 we see a lot about Lady and his backstory, about his family, and how those things affected her and her behaviour…I would like to give that kind of space to the other girls as well.
For Trish, it would be very interesting to see what she did and where she went when she decided to not closely work with Dante anymore: we see and know so little about her, when she has a lot of potential in terms of personal growth and self-affirmation.
I would be delighted to see the events of DMC4 from Kyrie‘a perspective. How she felt when the truth of the Order was uncovered, when Credo died, when Nero saved her and let her see his arm…this poor girl has gone through some serious shit, it would be interesting to see how she coped with all of that.
We know Nico is the biological daughter of Agnus and adopted granddaughter of Neil Goldstein: here I see another goldmine for family issues. What kind of relationship she had with her father and mother before Agnus abandoned both? How did she end up with the Goldstein? Did she met Tony when she was young?
4) speaking of families, my little heart is always craving happy Sparda family time. I want to see more of Sparda and Eva, more of the little twins, more of their happy moments together. Like, even nice and short flashbacks would be perfect: a little glimpse on what was before the nightmare.
5) speaking of Sparda: his young years alongside Mundus. I honestly want a villain (beside Vergil) to not only be the Bad Guy™️, but to also have nuances, to be a round character. I want to know how they became friends, what adventures they were in as a team, how Sparda helped Mundus sit on the Underworld throne.
6) my biology nerd ass needs more information and world building about the demons and the demon world. How is it structured? We see some places at the end of DMC3 and some glimpses at the end of DMC5…but I honestly crave moar. Also, I may be a sucker for “classic” demonology, but it would be interesting to know if demons are “organised” in a hierarchy, or is just complete chaos where the strongest prevails. Also, since hybrids are possible, all types of demons can have offsprings with humans? Or just the most humanoid ones? Why?

The Science of Worth (Part 2)
Tags: @vbecker10
Pairing: Loki x Y/N
Warning: Fluff and humor
Author Note: I hope you enjoy this next part!
As the great Shakespearean character Malvolio once said, “Be not afraid of greatness: some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon 'em…”. Though the premise of the scene was comedic and meant to show the folly in his ambitious and pretentious egotism, Eva felt as if she followed ridiculous instructions that now led her to the grandiose punchline. The punchline, you ask? Her standing before a glass wall so clear it was hard to even tell there was anything there of a building that had a very famous symbol on its side. The large A that was known worldwide…and even on an intergalactic level.
Is this really where I’m supposed to be meeting him?! There has to be a mistake! Shoving her hand into one of the back pockets of her jeans, she pulled out the folded sheet of paper that held enviably elegant handwriting penciled across it. Unlocking her phone in her other hand, she cross-checked the address she typed into her maps software and the accuracy of her GPS location. There was no denying it, the address she was sent to was none other than the Avengers compound. “This has to be some sort of joke, right? A meticulous and detailed prank?” She muttered under her breath, looking up at the pristine glass she so skillfully walked into moments ago. She rubbed her forehead as the memory of the pain resurfaced. I’m pretty sure that’s on camera somewhere…but none of that explains why I’m even here! She pursed her lips to one side and tried to think over the last couple of weeks.
Thor had come to the tiny apartment more frequently over the past two weeks than usual. He had been in contact with Tony Stark, Nick Fury, and Steve Rogers discussing the gravity of the situation that came to pass without any of them realizing. Initially, Stark and Fury were staunchly against the addition of Eva and due to the various missions that were underway the discussion was tabled for some time.
After two weeks of waiting, the four sat in one of the conference rooms at the compound. He insisted the rest of the Avengers need not be troubled with this issue, hoping to speed up the process and reduce the risk of others voting against him. The one Avenger he knew would be on his side was Captain America. His sense of duty and justice were one of the many great qualities that would work in his favor.
“Listen, Thor, I don’t know who things work up in Asgard, but this isn’t some charity place where we pick up strays from the street. She’s human, she’s an American, she can get an apartment if she needs some place to live.” Tony bluntly spoke, popping a blueberry in his mouth as he walked around the room.
“If the situation were different, I would wholeheartedly agree with you, Stark. However, I am not asking we just take in anyone. She is someone we must assist.” Thor insisted.
“You keep saying that, and yet I don’t exactly see why. Enlighten us,” Fury leaned back into his seat with his eye trained on the god of thunder. “Why is this person any more important than the rest?”
“Excellent point, why do we need to babysit some snotty college brat?” Tony snapped his fingers and pointed at Fury. “Tell us all about it, Goldilocks.”
“As I have said, she is now in danger because of our poor insight.” The Asgardian prince rolled his at his comrade’s incessant need to use such ridiculous nicknames. “When my brother was fully cleansed from the corruption of the Mind Stone, I came to you all asking for asylum on his behalf. He is no longer allowed back on Asgard unless he wishes to be locked away in our dungeons once again. The consensus was that he should reside within reasonable distance from our compound and be monitored by me because there was still uncertainty of his character. I found a place for him to stay from this fascinating site of Craig’s that listed many things. The fees of his living were approved by S.H.I.E.L.D. and I was tasked with routine visits to make sure he was not doing anything underhanded in secret. As you saw, he has proven to be completely free of the Mind Stone and has been living silently within the city.”
“Yeah, and now we want to have him work as part of the Avengers. I don’t see the issue.” Tony raised an eyebrow in question as to why Thor needed to repeat all this known information.
“Yes, he has to leave the apartment he lives in to come here. However, he does not reside alone in that place. Eva lives with him and she was the one who asked Craig for his assistance in finding someone to share the financial burden of housing.” He continued to explain, undaunted by Tony’s mannerisms. “As we all and many others know, Loki is my brother.” He paused, looking at Fury, Tony, and Steve. “I am a known member of the Avengers.” He paused again and looked at each of the men in the room. “I have been seen coming and going from there on many occasions. We have many enemies who are not above using whatever means necessary to try to get at us…including abducting and harming someone they think is important to us.”
“Which now means she has a big target on her back, telling them to try to use her to get to us.” Steve sighed, tapping his fingers against the glass table. “This is trouble. We can’t just leave her now that we’ve given this impression that she’s someone important to us.”
“Dammit, I knew that was going to come and bite me in the ass later! I shouldn’t have said yes, and I shouldn’t have told you about Craig’s list.” Tony clicked his tongue and scoffed in annoyance, turning his back to the group as he paced a little faster.
“Looks like we’ve gotten her in a whole heap of trouble.” Fury muttered, frowning at the logic that was laid out before him. “She’s not some spy?”
“No, she’s not some spy.” Thor quickly assured him. “In fact, she would be more useful to us because she is very capable of controlling my brother! I was certainly surprised to see just how well she is on many occasions! Also, he has been unwilling to move and has given little on the reasoning of why. I’m very certain it is because he has come to like Eva and feels responsible for her safety.”
“So what, she’s his pet?”
“Or his friend. I doubt it’s that unreasonable of an opinion, Tony.” Steve interjected and Tony rolled his eyes.
“Well, whatever his weird fantasies are, she’s now our problem. I guess he can bring his pet with him.” He reluctantly agreed, Fury nodding his head in agreement.
“We’re now responsible, but that doesn’t mean she can just do whatever she pleases. If she makes trouble, she’s out, understood?” He made sure to make eye contact with all three of the men in the room. “I’m not playing games and this isn’t some babysitting service. Understood,” he made sure they all responded to him before standing up from his seat. “Good, then you can tell Loki she’s allowed to move in here with him. Meeting adjourned.” He walked out of the room and soon the rest of them followed after. Thor, elated at how the tides changed to his favor, ran to give Loki the good news. Sadly, Y/N was not present at the time due to her work, so he left it to Loki to inform her of the upcoming changes. Which now led to the current predicament of said Midgardian who knew nothing of what was going on, all thanks to a certain deity with a penchant for mischief.
She paced back and forth to and from the front door, the doors opening with an audible whoosh of air when she mustered up the courage to step into the sensor, only to doubt and turn away to leave. Chewing on her lower lip, she tugged at her clothes and hair to help expel the excess energy that currently bubbled up inside her. Did she dare enter the Avenger’s Compound? What business did she even have here? Wait, she topped mid-step, her right foot held in the air. I’m currently living with Loki, the brother of Thor, an avenger. I was suddenly given this address and told to come here. Does that mean something happened? To Thor? Was this for Loki? No, it had my name on it. Did something happen to Loki?! She turned as a surge of worry took over her body, she walked straight into the cool lobby.
The glass doors silently slid closed behind her while her sneakers squeaked against the large polished tiled floors. The entire building gave state-of-the-art modern vibes with some minimalism from the chrome, white, and silver color scheme to the lighting that was part of the back wall behind the long reception desk. There were two people stationed at the front, standing and staring at her.
“Well, I’m certainly not in Kansas anymore.” She muttered the words aloud, trying to calm her nerves to build up the courage to try to find out what or who led her here.
“Kansas, why would you think you’re in Kansas?” A familiar voice caught her attention and she quickly turned towards the speaker.

30 Days of Drabbles::Day Thirteen
Character(s)::Robert and Rhodes Word Count::605
                                                                    ~*~
It wasn't his place, Robert knew that. He barely knew the girl and undoubtedly not well enough to consider her his sister. But she was his sister and whether he had the right to intervene or not, he was doing it.
He had seen the man lurking around the edges of the property for the last few weeks when he was picking up or dropping Calla off, despite feeling the girl could quite easily transport herself if she wanted to, and he had grown curious. Enough so to swallow his pride and call Jezebel to ask her.
"Tha' sounds like Rhodes, Eva's ex-boyfriend. Boy did a real number on 'er when he left the first time," Jez had explained, not thinking Robert would do anything about it.
And why should she have? Robert had made it a point to keep his distance and she had thought he was only asking because he had some protectiveness when it came to his own daughter.
But, as it turned out, he felt some shred attachment to Eva as well. Which was why, after Calla was inside, did he double back to deal with Rhodes.
"I think we need to have a chat," the demon stated plainly, giving the other no time to react before the bar was suddenly gone from his line of sight, replaced by the interior of a worn down, abandoned warehouse.
"Fucking demon, I swear," Rhodes swore, turning to face the strange man. He had never seen him before and he was fairly certain no one new had been hired on at the bar either. "Who the hell are you and why am I any business of yours?"
"Evangaline's eldest brother," he answered quietly, giving the other a rather reproachful look. "Is there a reason you're stalking my little sister?"
"Oldest brother?" Rhodes asked, confused as he began going through what he knew of Eva's family. He knew Dex and Nia were the oldest at the bar, he knew Lilith was older even than Nia, but this clearly was not Dex. That only left... "The dead one?" Maybe not the best way to phrase it, but he couldn't remember the name to save his life.
Robert found no amusement in the choice of words, but that could be addressed later. "Answer my question before I make you answer it."
"I'm not stalking her, I'm not that stupid," he started, holding his hands up before Robert could intervene. "I'm waiting for someone to show up. One of my cousins is supposed to be making his way to the bar. He got split up from his older brother and needs a safe place to go. The last time I saw Eva was two weeks ago. We met up for lunch. She told me about the guy she's been seeing and I asked her if my cousin could come here. Nothin' more, nothin' less. You can even ask her," he explained, understanding why anyone in her family would take issue with him being around and figuring she hadn't told anyone that the two of them were on at least semi-decent terms these days.
Robert took it into consideration, planning on asking Eva about it later just to verify. "Do not let me find out you are lying about any of this," he warned before turning on his heel and strolling towards the door. "We're in Eureka, by the way. I assume you can find your own way back."
"Fucking demons," Rhodes muttered again, shaking his head as he watched the other disappear, relieved at least that he didn't have that long of a trek back to the bar.

10 18 and 22 for the writing asks :)
ooh thank you, anon! these got a little away from me!
10. Has a piece of writing ever “haunted” you? Has your own writing haunted you? What does that mean to you?
I've had a few pieces of writing "haunt" me, things that have stuck in my brain and lingered in my own style. The first, and one that I think remains the deepest, is Ursula Le Guin's short story, the Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas. I would've read it when I was thirteen, and already familiar with the Earthsea series, and it changed me. Her writing has always been incredibly evocative to me, but her address to us as readers within the piece is something that I've never been able to vocalise its importance to me. The piece itself also encapsulates my thoughts on utopia, and suffering, in a way that I've also never really seen replicated. If I could ask everyone to read one piece of writing alone, it would be Omelas.
Watership Down also haunts me, though in a very different manner. Richard Adams is a marvelous writer, and Watership Down -- and Plague Dogs as well, though it is a different discussion -- has a deeply interesting discussion on humanity and animality, as he describes it. The depiction of death is also so important to me, as I read it around the time my Grandfather died, and the line "It seemed Hazel wouldn't be needing his body anymore, so he left it lying on the edge of the ditch, but stopped for a minute to watch his rabbits." is something that has stayed since then. The idea that death is... just not needing a body anymore. It lingered too, and I've reread it after each death I've experienced in life, and it's always been a connection for me. It also has one of the most beautiful beginnings I've read. The opening line is, "The primroses were over." The last line plays into this, a technique I love, and this is the best use of it I've ever seen. "[...] together they slipped away, running easily down through the wood, where the first primroses were beginning to bloom." A book that begins with death and a choice to live, and ends in life and a choice after death.
There are many nonfiction pieces that have done similar things to my brain, and even more poetry, but these are the two that stand out to me the most at present.
My own writing... I write a lot about grief. My own especially. I think that haunts me, in a unique way. A lot of those works don't get published, but one in particular is lingering with me, and has for a while now: a haunted house. What happens when a house falls in love? Eventually, I'd like to publish it properly. But it's a story about grief and the way it can change you. That haunts me.
Taralin also haunts me, though it feels like a little sidestep of the question to answer with them. Taralin is a D&D character who I write a lot about. Often, if I'm being haunted by emotions, or unable to process something, I sit down with them and just... write. I've ended up with some really interesting things -- about 50k of interesting things at this point -- and while very little of it is finished, and I doubt I ever will finish a lot of it, they weigh on me. I think that, even after their story is "complete" in the eyes of a D&D campaign, they'll keep sitting with me. Though I can't guarantee it at all, as is the nature of their character, I so desperately want to give them a happy ending. Their story is about trauma, and the violence it rends upon you, and how complicated it is to move on when fear guides you. I want them to have peace.
I made them haunted, and in turn, they are haunting me.
18. Choose a passage from your writing. Tell me about the backstory of this moment. How you came up with it, how it changed from start to end.
And so, the house and the girl regarded one another for a long, long moment, each wallowing in the despair of the other’s presence. Eva moved first, and took the six steps up to the front porch. The keys evaded her reach at the house’s request, lost in the depths of her bag. It knew this would not stop her forever, but it was allowed to be petty, it thought. Sliding the key into the lock was deceptively easy for Eva, but the house put up yet another petty fight against it turning, and then Eva found the door opening out with enough force to send her stumbling inside.
This is from The House (working title).
This passage is a favourite, simply for establishing that the house has control, and also has identity. Eva might be able to speak, but the house has presence. It was also a great jumping off point for how the house is able to communicate how it feels about things. The ability to make the keys avoid her grasp, the ability to temporarily jam the lock. Being able to play with how a house can have physicality is really interesting.
I knew going in that they both desperately didn't want to be alone, but vehemently didn't want to be with the other, and I wanted the house to have more personality than rage and longing loneliness. Letting the house be petty, and giving it power early on in the piece was important to me, and what better way to show someone they are unwelcome than by preventing their entry?
It's still in first draft stage, and will still be changed and edited, but this moment is important to me.
22. How organized are you with your writing? Describe to me your organization method, if it exists. What tools do you use? Notebooks? Binders? Apps? The Cloud?
The answer to this is not very! As Google has been getting worse, I've been slowly porting all of my stuff saved there onto my ancient copy of Word.
I have a folder on my laptop for wips, and a few USBs lying around for older complete projects. Most of my writing is on Word, but I also have a whole load of scraps of paper where I dump thoughts that come to me when I don't have my laptop close by. These sheets of paper get lost (or put in random piles in drawers) very easily, and I often spend months thinking I've completely lost something, only to find it while looking for something else. These have sometimes brought up wild little bursts of inspiration, which brings me a lot of joy, though far less stability in finding and using ideas!

Drácula (1931)
Tumblr media
In the early days of talkies, some films were shot more than once to appeal to foreign markets. The sets, props, and story were the same, but different actors used a translated script. Filmed at night on the same sets as its more famous English counterpart, George Melford’s take on Dracula deserves your attention. While it might be missing that iconic performance by Bela Lugosi, it's a masterpiece of black-and-white horror.
Based on the 1924 stage play by Hamilton Deana and John L. Balderson, itself based on the novel by Bram Stoker, the titular Count Dracula (Carlos Villarías) is - unknown to the solicitor who visits his derelict Transylvanian castle - a vampire. Aided by the now-ensorcelled Renfield (Pablo Álvarez Rubio), Drácula travels to London. There, he sets his eyes on Eva Seward (Lupita Tovar). With the help of Professor Van Helsing (Eduardo Arozamena), Mina's fiancé Juan Harker (Barry Norton) and father (José Soriano Viosca) prepare to battle the creature of the night.
If you own any release of Tod Browning’s Dracula, you probably own this film too - packaged as a bonus feature. This "extra" is good enough to be the main course. Compared to its English predecessor, it runs significantly longer (104 minutes versus 85). This allows for more detail and character development. If you were bothered by the loose ends left unanswered in the English film, you'll be happy to see them addressed here.
Drácula excels at creating an atmosphere of permeating horror. While it may not be "frightening" by modern standards, it still mesmerizes. Pablo Alvarez is excellent as the lunatic Renfield. His maniacal gibbering is unsettling, particularly when he loses control while his master preys upon the people of London. Also strong is the leading lady, Lupita Tovar. Towards the conclusion, she undergoes a transformation that isn’t necessarily "scary" but takes you aback.
Now, the big question. How does Carlos Villar fare as the Count? This is where he, and I, are at a disadvantage. No one could re-create the performance by Lugosi, whose stilted, but magnetic performance has become synonymous with the word "vampire". So no, Villar is not going to supplant the role. He’s still excellent. This is a different type of villain. Count Drácula smiles from ear to ear, like a little kid who just tricked his parents into buying him a new toy. He’s so giddy at the thought of murder his face imprints itself into your mind. When he isn’t luring flies into his spider web, Villar also plays the dramatic part convincingly. His confrontation with Professor Van Helsing (a role that allows Eduardo Arozamena to shine) is as captivating as the first time you saw it.
I sometimes give older films a break when discussing the performances. Sound was a new thing. Actors were accustomed to pantomiming to convey their characters' emotions. There’s no need to judge these performances as “from that time”. They’re simply great. This Dracula uses a tried-and-true story but benefits from better lighting, better camera angles, more details about the aftermath of the characters' actions, and better pacing. Unsurprising, as George Melford watched the dailies of the Browning film before starting his cameras. The Spanish Dracula is one of the most pleasant surprises I’ve experienced in a long time. I'm as excited as I was the first time I saw Bride of Frankenstein.
Is Drácula better than the English version? I won't go that far. It's the second half we didn't even know was missing. My recommendation? Set aside some extra time and watch both pictures together. That way, you get the complete picture, a rather spectacular one. (Original Spanish version on Blu-ray, June 23, 2017)

CWA Crime in Translation Dagger
Last Saturday the Crime Writers Association (CWA) published long lists in each category of it’s annual awards, known as the Daggers.
I am in the fortunate position of being judge in the Crime Fiction In Translation Dagger.  From a total of 70 entries our long list has attracted a large degree of interest with books from France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Japan, Finland and Iceland.
Tumblr media
I've had a few people mention that they are not so familiar with the books so I wanted to add some details, which I hope will be encouraging, if not tantalising!
Girls Who Lie
Eva Björg Ægisdóttir
Translated from Icelandic by Victoria Cribb
Orenda Books
This is the follow up to The Creak On The Stairs which won the CWA New Blood Dagger in 2022. It sees Elma and the other detectives in Akranes investigate the death of a woman long known as missing. It features an atmospheric sense of setting in western Iceland and very realistic characters.
Hotel Cartagena
Simone Buchholz

Impossibly Redeemable - Chapter 17 - Pancake Car
Summary: Shortly after faking  his death in Svartalfheim to fool Thor, Loki wakes up to find himself in a  realm that is not the one he “died” in. Pairing: Loki x F!Reader
Word Count: 1,514
Warnings/Disclaimers: Starts fluffy. Hits a depressing moment with Eva having to come to terms. Tried to lighten it up at the end.

You stepped forward, opening the door to the next car. The pastel horizon flooded Loki’s vision. Mountainous stacks of puffy, golden disks at varying heights littered the landscape. They looked… Fluffy? Then, there was the smell. Absolute Valhalla. A freshly baked cake but with an added buttery sweetness of honey and a dash of vanilla wafted to his nose.
Loki could feel his mouth watering as he glided into the car with Eva and you in tow, hopping down immediately onto one of the discs. His feet sank into it. So strange. It was fluffy like a cake but it was more dense, more… Squishy and jiggly. And it was warm, just pleasantly so.
Breaking his own reverie, he spun around in time to see you stepping onto the same fluffy platform. You hadn’t been ready for the ground to have so much give. He reached out as you fell forward, catching you before you could inadvertently bury your face into the new substance.
Eva observed inquisitively from the door. Loki was about to hold out his arms to her when you had righted yourself when she leapt out to land near you. The ground sank even deeper with the force of her impact, but it reacted differently. Instead of stilling, it wiggled before popping back up, throwing Eva up into the air. She squealed as she met the apex of the bounce. As she met the ground, she sunk again but not quite as far. Nor was she tossed in the air as high either. This next time she landed, it was for good. Loki and you rushed to her as she sat with a shocked expression. In your arms, she shook her head like it would slow her thoughts before her lips tugged up into a grin, one just as large as when she played with the corgis.
“What is all of this?” She was already back on her feet, testing the bounce factor.
Loki stood with no issues, diverting the question to you with a shrug.
“Well…” You let out a puff of air as you took in your surroundings before attempting to stand with little to no wobbling. “Looks like pancakes… Very large pancakes…”
“Pan. Cakes?” Loki drawled out the words like a foreign language.
Your eyes narrowed incredulously. “Yeah. I guess you’ve never had them before.”
You received head shakes from both your companions.
“Okay… Never thought I would ever need to explain this, but here we go. A lot times it’s made from a simple batter similar to a cake. You cook it in a pan on a stovetop. Hence, the name. It’s usually topped with butter and syrup or honey, but that’s a matter of taste.”
That would explain the delightful smell…
“And what is the occasion for this?” Loki was fully engaged now as was Eva.
“Any, really. It’s easy to make. Considered a breakfast food, but my family would switch things up and have it for dinner.”
Eva jumped lightly and earned herself a tiny bounce. “So we can eat this, too?”
Loki and you shared a look. The god stepped in for this one. “As wonderful as it sounds, little dove, I would not eat these specifically.”
Of course, she pouted but didn’t put up much resistance. She would at least get to jump on the stacks while they looked for a door.
“But,” you chimed in, “if we find a car that has a kitchen, we might be able to make some we can eat.”
With a grin showing most of her teeth, she agreed and spun around to launch herself at the neighboring pancakes. Loki shot you a smirk, clearly intrigued by your proposition, before you both cringed at her bouncing much too high on the other stack. Now you two weren’t so sure you would make it to the next car. You might have a heart attack just trying to keep Eva safe.

“Watch this, kid!” the butter stick yelled out just as it was sliding across a tall stack of pancakes. It sprung up right at the edge, a trail of butter left in its wake, and soared up high before landing on a lower stack.
Eva hopped up and down causing a rolling ripple across the pancake you all were on. You had taken to clinging to Loki as you traveled from mountain to mountain. You had the worst time maintaining your balance.
At first, you had merely hung off his arm. The god had decided to tease you a bit, offering to carry you like he had in the Gravity Car. He adored ruffling your feathers as you attempted to hide your flustering embarrassment, but he had to keep his mischief at a minimum. There had been a couple of close calls with Eva almost bouncing so high she could go flying off the edge. Then, she’d met her new friend, a Denizen who was literally a stick of butter with limbs. It encouraged her recklessness. Loki opted to snake an arm around your waist so he would at least have one free hand in case something happened.
“Eva, wait!” You panicked as she took off immediately.
She slid across the slick butter trail. You were too late to stop her from launching herself off the edge. Loki and you rushed over, careful not to take the same path. She had landed safely alongside the butter stick who was already starting its slide to the next stack. The pancake jiggled and bounced her on impact. Now, she was laying on her back in the midst of a giggle fit.
“Mama, Papa! Did you see that?” She rolled onto her side peering up and Loki and you.
And then her laughing ceased. The smile on her face faded at her realization. By the time the two of you made it down to Eva, she was sitting up, arms hanging limply at her sides. Her eyes swelled with tearful memories. You were the first to scoop her into your arms to hold her tight followed by Loki who wrapped you both up. Eva buried her face in your chest, and the dam broke. Bulbous tears shed themselves from her eyes. You combed your fingers through her hair as you tried to coax her soft cries down.
“I didn’t… I didn’t mean to…” Eva choked out.
Loki tenderly rubbed her back. “It’s alright, little dove.”
“No…” she sniffled and untucked her face to look at both of you. “I… I love you both… But I don’t want to forget them…”
“Oh, Eva…” you breathed, kissing the crown of her head. “You won’t forget your parents, and we’re not here to replace them either.”
“I know… Just…” She clenched her eyes shut in an attempt to stop the tears.
“Nor will we leave you behind,” Loki added. “I suppose we would be more like godparents. We care for you in addition to your parents.”
She ventured a peek at Loki. “Godparents…?”
“Y-yeah. Think of it like…” you started to explain, worrying your bottom lip in the process. Your eyes suddenly lit up. “Bonus parents.”
Huh. Loki hadn’t thought about that one. It wasn’t as eloquent as he would have liked, but it wasn’t bad.
Eva started picking at her palms, again. “So then… you would be Bonus Mom, and you would be Bonus Dad?” She looked to you and then Loki.
The god and you nodded. That would be the simplest way to put it. Eva mulled it over with a look of uncertainty.
“But you don’t have to call us that if you don’t want to,” you threw in hurriedly. “You can call us what you always have.”
“Whatever you would like, sweetling,” Loki agreed softly.
She bobbed her head up and down. It was easy to see she wasn’t quite alright with anything yet, but neither of you minded. You’d give Eva as much time as she needed.
After a time, she finally relaxed in your arms and wiped the trail of dried tears from her face with her sleeve.
“I think I’m ready to go.” Her voice was small with a hint of finality.
“Okay, honey,” you whispered, your lips grazing the top of her head.
Loki helped you both stand. Eva, having slung her arms around your neck, stayed clutched to you. Then, the mischievous god decided to try something a little different. Keeping an arm around your waist, he swooped down and lifted your legs into his other arm, effectively carrying you along with Eva like the combined weight was nothing to him.
“Loki!” you squeaked in protest.
His lips twisted into a playful smirk upon your shocked expressions. “Ladies, might I suggest you two hold on. Tightly.”
And with that, he leapt to the next stack of pancakes, barely giving you any time to wrap an arm around his shoulders while still keeping a grip on Eva. Loki figured this would be the easiest way for you all to reach the door. Plus, he caught a tiny smile sneaking its way back onto Eva’s face.

unpopular opinion: i love watt to pieces and i can honestly go on and on about how amazing and well-done the characterization here is buuuut reese was kinda done dirty in act 2 in my opinion. i dunno fjsjd at times i just think that reese was put on the sidelines in act 2 and considering that she helped frame the sleepover murders on an innocent 14-year-old and that she accidentally killed a dude without anybody knowing, I kinda expected that her guilt over doing so would be addressed and expounded upon in act 2 but yea time constraints-
