do you have more recommendations for Penelope featherington-coded fmcs? both from the book version and the show version.
Callie from Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake by Sarah MacLean: She's fat/plus-sized and a spinster who realizes she never tried to stand out or grab life by the horns (by herself!) so she comes up with a list of scandalous things she wants to do, the first of which is asking a notorious rake for her first kiss. Ralston is immediately intrigued and soon becomes OBSESSED (no seriously the way he's just so deeply into her body is everything) as he helps her accomplish all the things on her list. There is a very hot carriage scene and (an actual) mirror scene.
Grace from When The Duke Was Wicked by Lorraine Heath: The show!polin dynamic basically; Grace is a redhead with a certain body insecurity who asks her older friend to help her find a suitor who truly loves her. Lovingdon is a jaded rake Who Can Never Love Again after the death of his first wife and son, but that doesn't stop him from doing all these sweet things for Grace and debauching her in every corner while informing her that a man who truly loved her would do all of this... which isn't him. obvi.
Penelope from The Duchess Hunt by Lorraine Heath: Not just because her name is Penelope, but the pining vibes in this are impeccable; she's the duke's secretary and this dumb dumb man is making her find him a wife while being all "hm the ideal wife would look like Penelope, talk like Penelope, smell like Penelope.... I WONDER WHAT THAT MEANS". Anyway she's so turned on by a hand touch that she masturbates in his carriage and LATER ON TELLS HIM and then HE GETS HER OFF IN THE CARRIAGE.
Jane from The Truth About Cads and Dukes by Elisa Braden: More plus/size-fat rep and she's a wallflower; she's compromised by a guy name Colin (lol) and Colin's older duke brother Harrison steps in to marry her. He's super icy and cold, but he's actually wildly obsessed with Jane's bod after 10 seconds of marriage and once she realizes that, she uses it to her advantage by means of low-cut gowns and erotically stripping her gloves :D
Sarah from Temptations of a Wallflower by Eva Leigh: Sarah is a wallflower who moonlights as infamous erotica writer The Lady of Dubious Quality, but like, instead of ragging on other women, she's actually doing her part to educate women about sex through her stories and provide entertaining material. The hero Jeremy is a vicar who's charged with hunting down The Lady Of Dubious Quality, and unknowingly ends up falling for, and then marrying her. It's also really cute that as Sarah falls in love with Jeremy, her erotica becomes more and more romantic.

“I’d hardly merit the title of rake,” he continued, watching her gaze move up his body, “if I couldn’t make my lover want more. If I couldn’t make her want me.”
“I admit astonishment that it should matter to you at all what my experience is,” she said uncertainly.
“My pleasure lies in giving you pleasure.” He placed his hands on his knees and leaned forward. “Let me bestow it upon you.”

Book Review 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Well, this was one of my most anticipated books of the year and it didn't disappoint, I absolutely loved it!
I'm so happy to read some of my favorite authors together, all of them having some of the hottest novellas I've read by them. Also, I enjoyed a lot the fact that each author chose a different Era, that made the anthology to be fun and interesting to read.
I really hope they come up with a new anthology next year. 😈😈😈
Lady Viper and the Bastard by Eva Leigh
MF + Georgian Era England + Both MC are villains 😈 + Role play
Seven Sinful Nights by Nicola Davidson
MF + Regency Era England + Villain game hell owner and "naive" Dowager Duchess + Age Gap + S*ex toys
The Gangster’s Prize by Joanna Shupe
MF + Gilded Age NYC + He's a gangster and she's the mayor's daughter + Sexy carriage😉😈
The Bootlegger’s Bounty by Adriana Herrera.
MMF + 1920's Caribbean + Pirates + Latinx rep + I'm sure to say this is the hottest story I've read by Adriana.
The Conquering of Tate the Pious by Sierra Simone
FF + Medieval + an Abbess and a Viking + Opposites attract

Books Read January 2023
I’m back baby! For the first time in forever I read 6 books in a month! Sure a bunch of them were novellas but still it’s 1/4 of the amount of books I read in 2022.
The Wonder by Emma Donoghue
Absolutely loved this. I read this because I enjoyed the movie; the book was even better. The book is set in a post-faminine Ireland where an English nurse is called out for a mysterious private job which turns out to be observing the supposed religious miracle of a child who hasn’t eaten in 4 months.
There is never any question as to whether the miracle is real or not but I found the book so much more complex and darker in some ways than the movie. Don’t want to spoil either but there is a romantic entanglement that happens quite quickly in both book and movie but that feels more sincere in the book. And the mystery at the heart of the novel is much darker in a way that feels true to life. Really enjoyed this highly recommend.
Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad
I’ve heard so many people say this book changed their life. I didn’t care for it at all. Frankly I found it kind of confusingly written and not that interesting. IDK, whatever magic it holds for other people it doesn’t hold the same for me, unfortunately.
Effi Briest by Theodor Fontane
I’ve wanted to read this for years but I was pretty disappointed. It’s a quick read about the titular Effi Briest, a lively young teenager who is married to her mother’s former lover in an arranged marriage (gross). Very sad look at the aristocracy and unhappiness in marriage. After I read this I went to the wiki page and found out Fontane based this on a real woman and her life seems so much more interesting than the way Fontane wrote about her.
The Jungle by Upton Sinclair
I went into this mostly blind except for knowing it was a classic and was immediately bowled over. I don’t typically like books from the early 1900s (this was written in 1905), but I found the writing in this remarkably clear and wonderful. It follows a family of Lithuanian immigrants who move to Chicago to try to make it rich and end up entangled in the highly abusive meat packing industry. I would say about 75% of this is completely brilliant. However Sinclair’s admitted reason for writing this book was to promote socialism and then final quarter devolves into really blatant socialist propaganda. Which is fine but doesn’t really do justice to what came before. I will say that it’s interesting reading this book in 2023 when a lot of the same struggles against capitalism exist and the same anti-socialist sentiment prevails in America. I wonder how Sinclair would feel knowing so many of his optimistic predictions failed to come true while so many people struggle with similar financial plights.
A really good snapshot of the early immigrant experience.
When We Lost Our Heads by Heather O’Neill
I absolutely loved this book and I feel pretty strongly it’s destined to be one of my favourite books read in 2023. Set in 1800s Montreal it follows the obsessive friendship between two white upper class anglo girls and how it spells disaster for both of them and everyone in their wake. Very darkly humerous. It also reminded me a lot of both The Crimson Petal & the White and Fingersmith, two books which I also loved. Highly recommend. O’Neill is brilliant and I regret not trying to read her works before.
An Education in Pleasure by Eva Leigh
This is a regency erotic novella about a governess who bangs the young duke she is now employed by (she’s the governess to his sisters). It’s a pretty cute short and sexy read. No notes!

September 2022 Reading Recap
New on the blog - my September reading recap!
September was an interesting month. It was also the month I finally got COVID (I’m better now) which was definitely a low, but I got quite a bit of reading in! This month I managed to read 8 books, so not bad, all things considered. I’m also on a major 90s historical romance kick which you’ll see reflected in the books I read this month. Here’s what I read this month: (more…)

How the Wallflower Was Won (Last Chance Scoundrels #2) by Eva Leigh
Tumblr media
What do you get when you mix an adept gambler, a bluestocking wallflower, and a marriage of convenience? That's right, you guessed it. HISTORICAL ROMANCE CATNIP.
The ingredients to that can only be found with Finn and Tabitha. It can only be blamed on their flaming attraction toward one another despite the oh-so "practical" terms of their arrangement. It's no secret that neither one of them have love down as a requirement for marriage. It's not in the cards. No bets necessary! In fact, Finn and Tabitha come together out of necessity - she, to gain admittance into an all-male intellectual society which requires her to have a husband; he, to make good on his deal to find a wife in under a year so that he, his brother, and his friend, Dom, don't have their funds cut off by their ultimatum-making families.
Since Finn has a learning disability, he has low self-worth. He believes he's not a suitable enough match for the erudite catch that is Tabitha, having heard his whole life that he's "unintelligent" and "ignorant," so he initially tries to set her up with Dom instead. That crashes and burns pretty quickly. In part, because Dom's still reeling from his wrecked nuptials with Willa, and in part, because Tabitha's trying to get into the Sterling Society before a new educational reform bill is passed. She, like Finn, has been underestimated. Undervalued. Invisible to men and society for much of her life, especially by way of her academic gifts. With heartbreak marring her past, she has learned to operate by logic rather than emotion, coming to believe that her heart is not something she can afford to risk.
The stakes are high for them both in different ways, but together, they weigh the logistics and decide to marry, leaving love completely off the table...
That is until love calls, anyway. Forcing them to roll the dice and play one Ace of a hand.
This was a solid follow-up to the first in the series. I liked how fervently Finn worshipped Tabitha for her mind, the way he championed her intellectual pursuits at all costs and seemed to fall more in love with her because of them. Tabitha was equally supportive. She not only encouraged Finn to open his own gaming hell but she saw he was shrewd and analytical and made sure he knew that. (In this house, we love couples who support each other!) I didn't care for their climactic conflict at the end, though. It seemed to build up out of nowhere and the apology afterwards was too one-sided when they were both in the wrong.
That said, I was grateful for the hefty dollops of spice, for the marriage of convenience trope, which is a favorite of mine, and for the foundations that were set in place for Dom and Willa. (I have a hunch they're going to ruin me. And to that I say: bring it on!)
Special thanks to NetGalley and Avon and Harper Voyager for the ARC in exchange for my review.
3/5 stars

Can you recommend a book with a good doggy style scene?
It Happened One Autumn by Lisa Kleypas: I was surprised I'd forgotten this one! I think what made this hot was that Lillian is so out of it after one orgasm (and one he deliberately withholds) that Westcliff is "arranging" her on her stomach before they do it doggy-style.
Duke of Depravity by Scarlett Scott: The transformation of Crispin from pathetic -> not is complete with this scene; he's very "tell me you're mine", gets a little spanky, a little bite-y, and when Jacinda finally agrees, he goes for it.
Wicked Again by Kathleen Ayers: They're hot. They're older (she's 49, he's 40). A little thing like an ankle injury isn't gonna stop Haddon from going "we're MORE than a dalliance bby!" as he bends Marissa over.
When A Girl Loves An Earl by Elisa Braden: James is muddy and doesn't want to *soil* Viola but Viola can't be stopped, which ends with her on all fours on a couch and Jamie uttering the winning line, "Take yer filthy Scot inside ye now, Viola."
The Chief by Monica McCarty: An emotional doggy-style scene; for background, Tor thought Christina was a prostitute his buddies had sent him (and she was there to get compromised) so he nearly took her from behind. Now when they're married and she asked for it, he's all "are you sure?!?!?" and the funny thing is even after they go at it doggy style he flips her over because he wants to see her face when they orgasm.
I would like to note that I nearly added McCarty's The Saint to this list but when I checked, Magnus only said to Helen "I hope you like it from behind" because he thought she was someone else, but he stopped when he realized it was her and never following through in the entirety of the book so now I'm sad :(
A Rogue's Rules for Seduction by Eva Leigh: The tail-end of Dom and Willa's fuck cabin sex marathon; a standout more so because of everything that comes before it and when he does just before it (he eats her ass; a rarity in HR), but it's very hot.
His Countess by S.M. LaViolette: More of a historical erotic romance; you know that when they do it doggy-style after he a) eats her ass, and b) asks if she's been doing her kegels (30 minutes a day! for his pleasure and hers!).
A Daring Pursuit by Kate Bateman: Post-bear chase! It's adrenaline-fueled and a little rough in a very good way.
Also, if you'd like a list of specifically bending-her-over-the-desk moments, here it is.

“I trust you’re enjoying your time as one of the scandalous.”
She tapped her finger against her chin. “Am I scandalous?”
“We’ll make damned certain you are,” he said, stepping close so that their bodies almost touched, “Come, love.”
He wove their fingers together and led her back toward where many guests congregated. In truth, he could have guided her toward the mouth of Hell and she would’ve gone willingly. Yet he was not the Devil, and instead of the entrance to Hades, he took her to a large octagonal stone and marble floor. Musicians stood in a nearby pavilion, and as they struck up a tune, revelers gathered.
