This could be me. This could be one of my colleagues, one of my classmates, one of my friends. It’s understandable that the original owner is upset over losing her pet, but what she’s done in retaliation is despicable, as is the news station that ran this story smearing our profession. Veterinary professionals should be able to go to work without facing graphic threats of violence against them and their families in return for saving a life in an impossible situation. You wonder why veterinarians and their support staff have such obscenely high rates of depression and suicide? This is why.
If you have a pet, I’m begging you to come up with a financial plan for their veterinary care. Get pet insurance (especially if you’re getting a new puppy or kitten). Start an emergency fund. Have a credit card set aside specifically for this kind of situation. Apply to CareCredit or a charitable fund like the University of Tennessee’s AlignCare if you find yourself unable to cover a bill. Most people don’t have immediate access to $10,000 (which is a reasonable price for the intense level of care this puppy required), so you have to have a plan. And don’t go buy an expensive purebred puppy and then claim you don’t have any money for vet care.
Be kind to your veterinarian. We are hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt from our education while making far less than our human healthcare counterparts. If we were in it for the money, we would have chosen any other career.

# # TRIGGER WARNING, PET DEATH
-
TLDR: My house rabbit Sam passed away today (7th Dec 2023). I am utterly heartbroken, and on top of it all I still have to pay for his £1500 vet bills and his cremation.
I have an important announcement to make. My 9 year old house rabbit, Sam, crossed the rainbow bridge today. He passed away at home, comfortably in his blankets.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I went to feed him his food and medication at 12pm today, and I noticed he was breathing fast. I tried to give him some of his syringe food and water, but it was running out of his mouth. I stopped giving it him and noticed he was trying to breathe through his mouth and he was struggling. I was home alone, but I rang the vets anyway even though I knew I had no lift to get there. They said that I could send them a video of what his breathing was like to see if I needed to bring him in. I sent them some videos, and then held him close and gave him many cuddles and kisses, holding him close and telling him how much of a good boy he was. An hour passed, and I couldn't stand waiting any longer. I rang the vets back and said I wanted to bring him in, and I would ring my mum so I could take him in as soon as possible. I placed him back in his pen, gave him some head pats, and he started trying to move his head and his front end to get comfy. I left the room at 1:48pm to get all my things ready for the vets. I came back at 1:52pm, and Sam had passed away, wrapped in his blankets, in his comfy pen. He had waited for me to leave the room before he crossed the rainbow bridge. I tried to see if I could save him; I even tried bunny CPR on him. But he was gone. I held him close and cried, telling him how brave he was and how much I loved him.
Almost everyone in our family said goodbye. My mum came home shortly after with the dog, and she and I cried together. My brother told Sam to go play with Monty (my previous house rabbit who passed in October 2022) over the rainbow bridge. We even let Elsa (my other house rabbit and Sam's companion) see Sam one last time; she sniffed him and nudged him, but then started to freak out and got really stressed, so we had to put her back in her own pen. (She is doing better now, but I think she knows what has happened and is just as upset).
We eventually took Sam to the vets around 3pm, so we could get them to cremate him. All the vets there were really kind and sympathetic, and chalked it up to that the little guy just couldn't keep fighting any longer, even though he had been so strong before. They all told me how much of a good job I did trying to help Sam, with me getting up every 2 hours for the last 2 and a half weeks to feed him and make sure he was okay. They gave me some of his fur, let me give him some final head scritches and kisses, and I said one last goodbye to my little trooper.
My heart is in pieces tonight. He brought so much joy into mine and my family's life, and everyone who had met him utterly adored him. I adopted him in January 2023, and even though I knew him for just under a year, he has helped me stay positive and given me so much happiness and many fond memories. He has left pawprints on my heart, and I will never forget him. I am currently with Elsa, giving her all my love as I know she will need it after losing her best friend.
Tumblr media
I am still having to pay for Sam's £1500 vet bills even after his passing as well as his cremation, and I have very little savings left.

A friend of mine had a scare yesterday when her tiny tiny dog managed to slip out a second story window and learned she couldn't fly the hard way!
Luckily the poor pup has no breaks or internal damage, and has been given medication for the bumps and bruises she suffered (given that she's only like 4 pounds soaking wet, she's very lucky).
Her owner, a friend of mine since high school, could still really use some help with the vet bills because their household was already financially stressed before this little dog escapade.
Spreading the word and any donations are both equally appreciated!

Updates on Mom and Chloe
Long story short, Mom is home and Chloe has to have surgery on Thursday.
Mom
Mom came home last Thursday. It took an hour and a half each way for me, to Philadelphia and back home. It was a rough drive, rush hour on the way there, and the tail end of rush hour on the way back, in the rain at night. She's doing well, getting home nursing and physical therapy.
Chloe
Saturday evening I discovered a large mass/sore on the inside of Chloe's hind right leg. I immediately scooped her up and took her to the emergency vet. They shaved the area to get a better look. The mass/sore was 4cm and ulcerated, but not infected. They were unable to tell me what it was based on the exam. There was nothing to be done that night, so they sent us home. Yesterday morning I called and rescheduled Chloe's appointment to yesterday afternoon. The mass measured 3cm. I'm also terrified because she's had some weight loss. She's still eating and drinking and acting pretty normally, except for hiding a bit more than usual. Surgery for removal is scheduled for Thursday, and it will be sent for pathology. I feel terribly guilty that I hadn't found this mass earlier, it was so large. But no one had seen it, as she has been getting weekly temperature checks and quick exams for the last two months. The vet tried to reassure me and tell me it's amazing I found it at all because animals are so good at hiding things. I'm trying to stay positive, but I'm so scared. I know she needs the surgery, but I feel terrible for having to put her through that, knowing she'll be so scared and confused and in pain post-op. But it will help her because now that I know about the mass, I can tell she's having discomfort from it, and the removal will alleviate that.
Just please send prayers and good vibes to both my mom and my Chloe. And if you're so inclined, you can donate to or share my gofundme from last year. It is still active, and I plan on updating it soon regarding the upcoming surgery.
Things have just been crazy here, and I haven’t been on tumblr for almost a week. I’m hanging in there, though, and my anxiety is high but manageable.

Emergency Vet Money Needed (Sorry to Have to Do This)
Last week, a girl of mine had a lumpectomy and it was successful, but in the same night we rushed one of her sisters to the vet and lost her despite our efforts.
It was heartbreaking.
Tonight, one of our other girls is in need of a vet visit as we suspect something may be wrong with her digestive tract, maybe a blockage. In rats this is dangerous within a short time frame.
Due to last week, funds are practically non-existent so here I am and here is my [PAYPAL.ME] link.
I am also offering these candles for £15.
It you'd like to order one and help out please DM me and I'll send the invoice via PayPal.

PLEASE HELP ME SAVE MY DOG!!
I’m going to do something I’ve never done before on Tumblr and ask for some financial assistance because my baby boy needs help, and it’s not going to be cheap.
A bit of background… Seven years ago, I started working at a local rescue called Concerned Citizens for Animals. About a year after I started working there, we got in a litter of feral puppies. They were only about eight weeks old, but they had had practically no human contact up to that point and were absolutely terrified. They’d hide under things and growl or try to bite at you when you went to pick them up. The worst was a little red pup with a glassy looking eye (thought he might be blind in it—it later improved as he got healthier, but his vision in it still likely isn’t great).
Tumblr media
I think because he couldn’t see well, he was even more afraid of the world than his siblings. The first time I picked him up, he SCREAMED bloody murder, bit me on the arm, and pooped himself because he was so scared. It took a long time of sitting quietly with him, tossing treats in his direction, and showing him my touch wasn’t going to hurt, but once we became friends, there was no turning back. He chose me, and I chose him. I named him Rufio after the leader of the Lost Boys in one of my favorite films, Hook, because like the character, he was a feisty little Lost Boy who put up a tough guy front but really just wanted a family of his own.
Tumblr media
This boy became his mama’s absolute best friend in the whole world. He saw me through my first (emotionally abusive) marriage and subsequent divorce and even made an appearance as “Best Dog” in my second wedding.
Tumblr media
Now, he’s six years old, and we’ve run into some health issues I never expected to see in him at such a young age.
Over the last month and a half, Rufio has been struggling with GI issues and gone from a healthy slim but muscular 42 lbs to under 35 lbs despite eating well. After trying just about everything imaginable (probiotics, Propectalin, metronidazole, panacur, special diets, etc.) without much success, the vet I now work for decided we needed to see a specialist, and they are starting to suspect GI lymphoma. They are likely going to need to do an endoscope biopsy and possibly also a CT scan. They have given us an estimate with the high end around $7000, and that’s not including any treatment if it does turn out to be cancer. If anyone is able to help, I would really appreciate it. I understand how easily people can make up scams, so rather than asking for money myself, donations can be made directly to Fetch Vet in Greenville, SC, under the pet name “Rufio Frantz.” Vet phone number is 864-900-5888.
Please help me figure out what’s going on and save my baby boy.
Tumblr media
EDIT/UPDATE:
Final bill ended up being around $4500. I have already had to put it on the credit card, so you cannot send anything directly to the vet, unfortunately. My PayPal is [email protected]. Here is a copy of the bill for proof.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So far, I have about $525 in donations out of the $4500. The good news is that we now have results back and THANK GOD, it’s NOT cancer!! Unfortunately, that means it’s probably IBD, which means a little more trial and error with getting the exact treatment right, but it’s something he can live with and we shouldn’t need to do any more major tests anytime soon.

After the emergency happened on the way home from our road trip, I realized I needed to be able to see Mandana while she is in her car crate.
Her old Ruffland was front/back and I could check on her through the door that was facing towards the front seat. The new Ruffland is front/side. She can get in through both the back and the drivers side which is nice but now I can’t see her and that was terrifying when I thought she might be having anaphylaxis.
I have a vet appointment tomorrow morning to get her aquapuncture and discuss maybe having an epipen on hand but we also went ahead and installed a backseat camera. It was inexpensive, easy to set up and gives me so much peace of mind. For all I know, a bee sting might send her into anaphylactic shock on our way home from the park and I might not even notice something is wrong without the camera.
Another benefit is that it will be easier to notice her behavior change if she alerts while I’m driving. I haven’t decided exactly how I want to go about car alerts but this should help with that for sure.

Hi, my coworker Natalie had her puppy Nala at our emergency vet for an aggressive case of parvovirus in June that resulted in a week of intensive care and hospitalization. On top of working multiple jobs, having student loans and going to school, having car insurance and a loan to pay, she also has an absent mother, an unexpected living situation change, and shes still trying to take care of her brother that lives with her dad as well. Shes genuinely such a sweet person, she deserves some support. Even with our employee discount on a $10,000 bill, it still came to around $8400, of which about $7900 is left to pay by December 1st or it goes to collections.
She and Nala would definitely appreciate any reblogs and shares on other SM or any small amount you can donate since everything does help.
Thank you

NEED ADVICE ON HURT FERAL CAT! CW: injured animal
our neighborhood feral cat (who we lovingly call Mama) has been in our neighborhood for over 10 years. Today… we noticed she had something wrong with her eye. It may be extremely damaged or gone entirely. My partner has been sobbing about it so hard. We love cats with our entire hearts, I just have some experience in the veterinary field from back in my home state so I’m trying to stay objective and not fully freak out.
Does anyone in Oregon have advice for where to get her looked at without risk of euthanization? I think her death would absolutely devastate my partner and me. It doesn’t have to be free. Usually we go to Dove Lewis, which might be our main option, but any other advice is appreciated. We need to make sure we can bring her back. We’re getting a trap, have been feeding her every day for years, and she does have an ear tip.
Please boost if you think any of your followers are in our state. Thank you, love you all ❤️

TL;DR One of my cats got sick and racked up a lot in vet bills. I'm on disability, meaning I barely have enough money to survive as it is. Because of this, I have had to start a gofundme. Please help if you're able to, and please share this post to help me get some visibility. Thank you so much. It is all appreciated more than I can express.
Here is the journey Chloe and I have been on since October...
My name is Meghan and I'm raising funds to help pay for vet bills. One of my cats, Chloe, was recently sick and racked up a lot of bills. This all began on October 22, when I had to take Chloe to the emergency vet. She wasn't acting like herself and just wanted to hide under the bed. She had a fever and elevated white blood cells, indicating an infection. The doctor scared me by mentioning the possibility of leukemia or lymphoma because her lymphocyte count was higher than it should have been. He sent off a blood smear to a pathologist to check the count manually. He also gave me an antibiotic for Chloe to take twice a day, which she tolerated very well. I then spent the next few agonizing days waiting for a phone call with the blood smear results. Thankfully the blood smear was normal in regards to the lymphocyte count.
Tumblr media
At the emergency vet
The following week I scheduled a checkup with the regular vet, just to make sure everything was ok once completing the course of antibiotics. She was acting a little better at this point, but wasn't back to herself. The regular vet discovered that she still had a fever, and repeat blood work showed a still increased white blood cell count. Whatever she had, the antibiotics didn't touch it. She was also tested for FIV and FeLV at this point. I was given an immune support supplement to give to Chloe to help her fight whatever bug she had. A few days later the results for FIV and FeLV came back negative, and the doctor recommended more extensive bloodwork. I took Chloe back in for another blood draw, and it was sent to a special lab in North Carolina. A week later these tests all came back negative.
Tumblr media
Still not feeling good, wanting mommy snuggles
I continued monitoring her temperature and weight. After November 9th she no longer had a fever. The regular vet had also recommended that I give Chloe and Oscar an additional can of food in the evening (in addition to the morning can and the dry food that is always out). Chloe even gained a little weight, which was good. By mid-November Chloe was up to 6.5 pounds and was starting to act more like herself. She had even started playing with her brother again, just a little bit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Starting to feel better, and a checkup
Chloe had another checkup on November 14. She was up to 7.1 pounds, and the bloodwork they did that day came back completely normal. The vet was very pleased that Chloe was acting like herself again, that she presented healthy, and that her bloodwork was normal. She said that Chloe must have just had a virus and was able to fight it herself. Chloe is totally back to acting like herself again, talking and playing and getting zoomies, everything. Chloe and Oscar go back on the 22nd for their vaccines.
Tumblr media
All better!
I'm on disability, meaning I am on a very small fixed income. I have maxed out my Care Credit card with all of the vet visits and lab tests. That is why I started a gofundme campaign. Several people have been so generous and made donations already, every penny of which is appreciated. If you have the means, please consider donating to help me and Chloe out. Also, please share this post to help my gofundme get some visibility. Thank you all so much.

What's happening , please share with us, maybe we can help in some way?
[I wasn’t sure how I can explain this. I will start this by saying Im okay right now. My family is okay and and my pets are okay. Unfortunately, nothing can be done with the situation. I can’t disclose everything but I can tell a small bit with the lesser triggers that are tagged.
I will be quiet for a bit because of how hard it’s been but please don’t worry. I got scared since I usually keep irl stuff to myself or in private.
Triggers: emergency vet, blood, injury, animal health and wellness
I was on my way home about 5 hours ago. I went to the city for an event. It was fun bit also a bit difficult. We were almost home when my older sister and I found something on the road.
It was a cat who couldn’t get up. We stopped and checked the cat, only to notice blood on the road. He wasn’t panting and he was breathing and alert. His head was up and could move it around without trouble. We have called vet lines for on-call vets in my town but there was none available. It was almost midnight but we had to go back to get him help. We got him as comfortable as possible in the car and went back for the city where the closest emergency vet is
He did not have a collar and there was no microchip. We are not sure if he belonged to anyone or was feral. He was awake and despite the blood, gums were pink and he was breathing okay. Other than the amount of blood present, there were no visible injuries except some cuts.
Though, he was a bit scared and was cold since he was out on the road until we found him. We werent sure how long he was out there. We cleaned him up a bit, kept him safe and warm on the trip to the vet and put pressure on the most severe wounds to stop the bleeding. He settled down and got some rest on the way there.
Long story short, it’s been difficult.
