Anton Walbrook, Roger Livesey, and Deborah Kerr in The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger, 1943) Cast: Roger Livesey, Anton Walbrook, Deborah Kerr, James McKechnie, Roland Culver, Ursula Jeans, Valentine Dyall. Screenplay: Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger. Cinematography: Georges Périnal. Production design: Alfred Junge. Film editing: John Seabourne Sr. Music: Allan Gray.
Why does Casablanca (Michael Curtiz, 1943) feel timeless when The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, a film from the same year, seems so dated? Is this just the American in me, forced to dredge up knowledge of British history that might be more ingrained in a Brit? (Though I really doubt that most Brits today are familiar with David Low's political cartoons from the 1930s and '40s that featured Colonel Blimp, a corpulent old walrus of a Tory, who satirized British complacency and jingoism.) Or is it that the Powell-Pressburger film is more detailed and searching, more engaged with what it means for a country to go to war, than the Warner Bros. romance, which is "still the same old story," cast in a wartime mode, so that we respond more immediately and viscerally to it? This is a handsome movie, with beautiful Technicolor and some engaging performances, but it takes work to appreciate its story, whereas you can just let Casablanca wash over you.

Thoughts on Sonic Mania Adventure?
I dislike the lack of voices, but in a tom & jerry sort of way, it's still good.
Even without the hype of wondering where it's going it's still something I love re-watching. Tho the characters seem more like modern takes on them than the '90s which breaks my brain.
Tumblr media
I could MAYBE see American '90s Sonic being hype for a real challenge, but Tails would NEVER facepalm Sonic doing this, like this is Sonic Colors levels of bullshit!
but that barely matters cuz the climax was so good (then again that's literally the first thing I think of rofl)
Otherwise I do like how Sonic & Tails are here, it's less of a big brother little brother relationship and more equals, I guess as if they're in their '40s cuz 1991 was 30 years ago or whatever aunno
Tumblr media
Ray barely ever had characterization so I have no real opinion beyond "heh I like him!"
Tumblr media
His whole thing with Knuckles was very funny
Mighty seems like how I'd expect Mighty to behave, he protecc etcetera, they kinda seem real close which is interesting.
Tumblr media
Metal Sonic is the absolute best, I love his fight with Mighty and the whole hostage situation and everything
THat and the climax was so good I fucking love how Robotnik was all
Tumblr media
watching the boys come after him and then the next episode opens with a bwaaahhmmm weird fart noise I love the fart noise it's ominous
Also it's weird how this seems to take place after Sonic Forces but Encore mode seems to take place after Mania mode?
I think Sonic sent a Ruby clone to Forces and had no idea Forces exists and there's a clone running around maybe or maybe Sonic Mania Adventures is his dying dream before becoming nothing...
ANYWAY!
Tumblr media
Metal Sonic goes super (and doesn't change colors? What, Mecha can do it but not him??????) and that's awesome I love the final clash it's so cool I fucking love the fight and then BUM BUM BUMMMM METAL GOT DAH MASTER EMER ROLL but then ohp they run out of budget and Knuckles stops the cartoon
Tumblr media
I mean
Aunno
Tumblr media
I guess that's it? Woulda been nice if these were in the actual game. I mean I guess Sonic Mania was $20... but Sonic Advance was $40 and that was more game than Mania ever could hope. So maybe it's a fair price aunno
Oh yeah you know what they should make a Sonic beat im up and the final boss if you got a four banger is super metal sonic and it's way hard and you need to wombo combo him it'd be awesome
Amy's shitscram episode was cute, I just wish she was in Sonic Mania! Like Plus shoulda added Ray, Mighty, Espio and Vector and I guess Charmy why not and Amy was in Mania Minus but aunno just BAD GAME GRRRR GRRRR RAWRF RARF ARF
Aunno they're good promo cartoons but I sort of feel like they'd mean more if the actual game had good animation. Like Night of the Werehog came out but Sonic Unleashed still had plenty of cutscenes y'know?
Maybe if they make Sonic Mania 2 it won't suck who knows but SMA is way past cool and I do hope they like... do more with this?
I guesss there's that 30th anniversary comic but...
Tumblr media
Why was Bean a murderer? Like why were Bean & Bark working for Nack, but especially why was Bean just pure evil no reigns insane?
Nothing in the game shows this personality beyond "damn he's annoying" but by that logic EVERYONE should crave violence, aunno I hate it BEAN IS NICE DAMMIT LOOK AT HIM
Tumblr media
Is that the face of a bloodthirsty bomber?
Anyways that's why I think Super Mario Bros 1993 is a really good movie and people need to stop being overcritical of media

Al look at the list winners for Best Film over the years we can see that almost all of them are still in circulation. wingsby William Wellman, the first winner in 1927, is available on DVD and Blu-Ray, as are other early winners such as Cimarron Y Broadway Melody. Most of the other Best Picture winners are titles any movie buff would instantly recognize. The blind spots are obvious. The Academy never chooses titles in foreign languages. In recent years, comedies have been overlooked. The Shape of Water it may have won in 2018, but voters are generally wary of genre films. You don't see many sci-fi or martial arts titles on the list. There is a growing divide between what wins at the Oscars and what makes money at the box office. Still, the Oscar for Best Picture remains one of the most reliable benchmarks for movies that will remain relevant. Here's our list of the top 10 movies that have won the biggest award. 10. The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) William Wyler's film about three veterans who return home at the end of the war still packs a lot of emotional punch. They are of different classes and origins, but they have a terribly hard time readjusting to civilian life. Some accuse the film of being pious and sanctimonious, but it deals frankly and in a very moving way with both the problems of the soldiers and those who have their families and friends to understand them. It won Best Picture the year it was also nominated. It's a Wonderful Life. 9. An American in Paris (1951) MGM's best musicals showcased extraordinary artistry. This is one of the best. It's not just the choreography or Gene Kelly's incredibly energetic performance as an aspiring artist in post-war Paris, but the use of color and sound. The ballet sequence at the end of the film is, along with the The Red Shoesby Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, as a perfect example of cinematography, in which all the elements are perfectly balanced. 8. Casablanca (1942) Warner Bros. producer Hal Wallis had a knack for overseeing films that were both popular and socially conscious. He not only had Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman and Claude Rains, but White House it was about refugees, betrayal, and wartime politics. Julius and Philip G. Epstein's script featured dialogue about bars, with the usual suspects, playing "As Time Goes By," which is still quoted today. Few Best Picture winners are as ingrained in the public consciousness as White House. Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in White House (Warner Bros Pictures) 7. On the Waterfront (1954) On the Waterfront by Elia Kazan can be read as the director's attempt to justify his own cowardly behavior, after giving names to the House Committee on Un-American Activities, during the communist witch hunt. His policy is complicated and contradictory. She is also magnificently acted. Marlon Brando arguably gives his best performance of all as Terry Molloy, the longshoreman and fancier who might have been a contender in life and in the ring if only his brother had been by his side when he needed him most. . 6.Lawrence of Arabia (1962) Easily dismissed as an epic of raging wide-screen nationalism, David Lean's film about TE Lawrence makes an astonishing display seen on 70mm. It also offers a subtle and penetrating portrait of Lawrence (Peter O'Toole), the masochist who is both the quintessential English hero and the quintessential English outsider. Peter O'Toole in Lawrence of Arabia (AP) 5. All About Eve (1950) Joseph L. Mankiewicz's drama about a budding young actress and the established star whose career she wants to usurp boasts some of the most caustic dialogue of any Best Picture Oscar winner in Hollywood. The brilliance of Bette Davis as the star and Anne Baxter as the seemingly naive but utterly ruthless young wannabe is matched by George Sanders' wonderfully acidic performance as drama critic Addison DeWitt. 4. The Godfather II (1974) Still the best sequel
in Hollywood history, this movie emulated its predecessor, The Godfather, winning the Oscar for Best Picture and surpassed it in the brilliance of its craftsmanship and performances. Everything in it, from the cinematography of Gordon Willis to the side stories of Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) as the crime family boss in the late 1950s and Robert De Niro as his father Vito many years before, work almost perfectly. . His rivals for the Best Picture award in 1974 included Lenny, Chinatown Y The Conversation (also directed by Francis Ford Coppola). All would have been worthy winners in other years. 3. Unforgiven (1992) The western was considered an anachronism and so was Clint Eastwood himself when he made his gory masterpiece. Eastwood played Will Munny, whom we first meet as a farmer and family man. Little by little, we learn about his past as a hit man. "I have killed women and children. I've killed everything that walks or crawls at one time or another, and I'm here to kill you, Little Bill,” he tells his old rival Gene Hackman. This brutal and elegiac film was always a safe bet for his Oscar. 2. Parasite (2019) The first foreign-language film to win the Best Picture Oscar was different on many levels. Bong Joon Ho's South Korean satire of class, wealth and family life turns into something close to a horror movie towards the end, and genre movies rarely win an Academy Award. This film was the winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes, and the festival favourites, beloved by self-righteous critics, rarely enjoy mainstream success. parasiteby Bong Joon Ho, was the first non-English language film to win Best Picture (Neon Pictures) In years past, parasite it could have snuck into the “international/foreign language” nominations, without competing for the top prizes. Its success suggested a new, more open and inclusive approach by the voters of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. It also helped, of course, that it was so enjoyable to watch. Funny, caustic and macabre at times, it captivated audiences wherever it was screened. 1. The Apartment (1960) Only Billy Wilder could have made a romantic comedy based on infidelity, drudgery and office politics and turned it into a movie as charming as this one. Academy voters are sometimes accused of self-righteousness and prudishness, but luckily that didn't stop them from awarding the Oscar for Best Picture to The Apartment. Follow the latest Oscars coverage news from The Independent here.

If you want a fucked-up mythological conspiracy theory, there's a non-zero amount of evidence suggesting that Emer had planned around/for Forgall (her father)'s death, because the process of Cu Chulainn going to retrieve Emer from Forgall's castle lines up worryingly well with the marriage conditions Emer laid out for Cu Chulainn, with startlingly little consequence for Emer herself outside of Forgall dying.
The fact that she (roughly, varies in exact wording from translation to translation) phrases a part of her marriage conditions as, "and struck down three groups on nine men, leaving the middle one alive", and then when the time comes for Cu Chulainn to start fulfilling the condition, Emer's brothers Scibar, Ibor, and Cat just so happen to be the middle man of each of the three groups makes this suspect as hell.
Now, am I saying this is at all what Ancient Irish bards telling these stories intended? Probably not. Is it fun and kinda funny to think about? Very.
*Translation of Emer's line comes Thomas Kinsella's "The Tain"

Thinks about how in Ace Attorney, guilty people are only ever shown to get a defense when they are literally holding Maya Fey hostage. Like sure, some culprits are sympathetic, but we only ever see them be arrested and not tried. There's such focus on having to prove your client 100% innocent, one which implies that guilty people don't deserve a fair trial. Franziska recommends Phoenix change Maya's case from 'innocent' to 'self-defense' and he is insulted. I know it's not meant to be serious but like. 😐

SO funny that Cúchulainn spends ages describing how beautiful and amazing he is to Emer, and then says later on “oh didn’t you know?? I’m wooing Emer in secret, that’s why I didn’t flirt openly with her :))” like bro if that’s you flirting in secret what does it look like when you’re OPENLY flirting

The Night Patrol
“Two words,” Zachary’s mouth curled into a smile. “Night Patrol.”
The reaction was instantaneous. The Captain’s face drained of colour. He was of a generation that had known the terror of the Night Patrol, a generation that still dreamt of them on stormy nights and saw them in the shadows of a dangerous street. The identities of the Night Patrol had been kept relatively private, so the Captain had no way of knowing if Zachary was telling the truth or lying. The Magi allowed his eyes to fill with enough blood-thirst to convince him. It had been some time now since Zachary had sunk his jaws into someone’s throat but it wasn’t beyond him.

Wait ignore those previous Cu tags cuz I just remembered Sadhbh was completely capable of leaving the Hill of Allen without immediately becoming a deer again she just couldn’t because that dude bro fae who didn’t take rejection would track her so therefore if Cu and Fionn had lived in the same time period Cu could’ve had all of his Geas’ taken away from him just by stepping into Fionn’s domain for a day
He would then 1) still be able to eat dog meat 2) still be able to turn down food from old women and 3) not die super fucking young and thus be able to raise Finscoth with Emer
