After the Justice Leagues Bwa-ha-ha era, DC decided to give control of the Justice Leagues America & Europe (it’d end as JL International) to Superman superstar, Dan Jurgens, control of JLA, writing and providing art for DC’s premiere team, with finishes by Rich Burnett, while Europe/International had Rod Randall and Randy Elliott take over art duties.

I loved Joey intervention more than Elliot. It lasted longer. Elliot talked calmly to Joey, using his victim voice a bit. Randall trying to keep the peace. It was nice to see Elliot relying on Randall, the big brother.
The dynamic between Randall and Elliot is energetic and entertaining. It was a long wait to meet the brothers, but it was worthy and provided better drama.

[Randall Munroe (drawn as Cueball) stands behind a lectern on a podium in front of a large conference audience (consisting of Cueball heads), with a poster hanging beside him.] Randall: My cryptosystem is like any Feistel cipher, except in the S-Boxes we simply take the bitstring down, flip it, and reverse it.
[The poster reads:] Decryption 01101010  >> 00110101 [inverter symbol] 11001010 [crossed arrows] 01010011
[Caption below the crowd:] I've been barred from speaking at any major cryptography conferences ever since it became clear that all my algorithms were just thinly disguised Missy Elliott songs.

THE NORTHMAN (2022)
Starring Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Björk, Willem Dafoe, Gustav Lindh, Elliott Rose, Eldar Skar, Phill Martin, Ingvar Eggert Sigurðsson, Olwen Fouéré, Kate Dickie, Ian Whyte, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, Magne Osnes, Ralph Ineson, Tadhg Murphy, Ian Gerard Whyte, Doa Barney, Katie Pattinson and Murray McArthur.
Screenplay by Sjón & Robert Eggers.
Directed by Robert Eggers.
Distributed by Focus Features. 137 minutes. Rated R.
Through Actor Alexander Skarsgård's Eyes, Director Robert Eggers' "The Northman" Explores A Violent Period in Early European History
While Iceland might have inspired The Northman, Ireland provided much of the actual landscape pictured in director Robert Eggers' decidedly eccentric third release. There was a further connection to Eire, as well. Nearly a thousand years ago, Vikings had invaded the island, so their brutal culture had an impact on the inhabitants back then who were brutal enough on their own. Nonetheless, Iceland's dramatic atmospherics of volcanoes and a dark, brooding environment became a unique character in this film.
Co-written by Eggers and Icelandic author/poet Sjón, this epic historical drama – based on the legend of Amleth – provided source material for Shakespeare's Hamlet. It stars Alexander Skarsgård (who also co-produced). Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Björk and Willem Dafoe rounded out the veteran cast.
Skarsgård had been wanting to make a Viking film for a while. Born in Stockholm on August 25th, 1976, the Swedish actor began at seven but quit at 13. After serving in the Swedish military, Skarsgård landed in the American comedy Zoolander. In 2008, he joined the miniseries Generation Kill but his real breakthrough came when he portrayed vampire Eric Northman in the television series True Blood (2008–2014). After appearing in such films as 2011's Melancholia, Battleship and The Legend of Tarzan, Skarsgård starred in the drama series Big Little Lies (2017–2019). That earned him a Primetime Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Critics' Choice Television Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award. From 2019 to 2022, he appeared in the films Long Shot and Godzilla vs. Kong. He also played Randall Flagg in the miniseries The Stand (2020–2021) and guest-starred in the series Succession.
After the two met to discuss possible collaborations, the pair decided to make the film Eggers' third project. Eggers began his career as a New York theatre designer and director before transitioning into film work. Born July 7, 1983, the film director, screenwriter, and production designer became known for his acclaimed supernatural horror films, 2015's The Witch (which starred Anya Taylor-Joy) and 2019's The Lighthouse.
Much of the cast joined in 2019 and filming took place throughout Ireland between August and December 2020 on a $70–90 million budget. Its world premiere was in Stockholm's Rigoletto Cinema on March 28, 2022 and began a global theatrical release schedule throughout April culminating in the United States on April 22. Having already grossed over $23 million worldwide, it received critical acclaim, with praise aimed at its direction, production values, and the performances.
Nonetheless, for all the vaunted visual eccentricities found in Egger's earlier two films, this taut feature provides a mixed bag of hyper-dramatic moments, with almost parodic touches of a Marvel Superhero film and some weird mystical flourishes. While Egger's visual intensity drives the movie, it lacks the richer character development and plot elements that would have made it much more than just an artistic Conan the Barbarian-like savage tale.
Set in A.D. 895, The Northman follows Viking prince Amleth on a quest to avenge his murdered father, King Aurvandill War-Raven (Hawke). After having returned from his overseas conquests, the king reunites with Queen Gudrún (Kidman) and the prince – his son and heir – upon return to his kingdom on the island of Hrafnsey. The two participate in a spiritual ceremony overseen by Aurvandill's jester, Heimir (Dafoe). The next morning, Aurvandill's brother Fjölnir (Bang) and his masked warriors ambush and assassinate the king. After seeing his village massacred and his mother taken away screaming by his uncle, the young Amleth flees by boat swearing revenge for his slaughtered parent, to save his mother and kill Fjölnir.
Life is hard, cold and unembellished by much art or pleasantries except for orgiastic rituals and torturous tests of strength and endurance amidst the sheer force of 10th century Iceland. Like The Last Samurai or Dances With Wolves, this film offers a unique look into the native life of a Viking. Unfortunately, that cultural exploration is underplayed in exchange for mystical machinations and intensely bloody battles.
After the assassination, 10 years pass and Amleth has been raised as an old Norse "berserker," attacking settlements throughout Europe – even as far away as the land of Rus. The now-biff battler sneaks aboard a slave ship heading to Iceland. Posing as a slave, he encounters Slavic Olga (Taylor-Joy), who claims to be a sorceress now enslaved. Upon arrival, everyone is taken to the farm that's now Fjölnir's, having lost his kingdom years ago. There it is revealed that beautiful Gudrún, now Fjölnir's wife, has borne him a son, Gunnar (Elliot Rose).
Through various plot twists (Amleth learns that his mother hated her first husband since she was a captured slave whom he raped), Amleth and Olga (now pregnant with his twins) keep working towards Fjölnir's demise, killing off his tribe and bloodline. Ultimately, Amleth frees the slaves, who kill most of Fjölnir's men, while Gudrún and then, Gunnar, are stabbed to death. Fjölnir discovers the bodies and schedules a final battle with Amleth at the Gates of Hel – the volcano Hekla. At the lava-spewing peak, they thrash at each other in a fierce sword fight. Fjölnir is decapitated, but Amleth is fatally stabbed through the heart at the same time. As he dies, Amleth has a future vision of Olga embracing their twin children. He seemingly ascends to Valhalla while shedding his first tear since his father's murder.
All is well and good, passionate and powerful. But so much of what might have been an insightful exploration of Viking life – especially while the young prince was growing up under their tutelage – is sacrificed for battle, blood and gore. I'm glad to have gone off to the North but I was left a bit cold from the arduous experience.

Filmmakers Randall Miller and Jody Savin Building Documentary About Holocaust Survivor’s Excellent Art
Filmmakers Randall Miller and Jody Savin Building Documentary About Holocaust Survivor’s Excellent Art
When Jody Savin and Randall Miller, a husband-and-wife filmmaking duo who created “Bottle Shock,” stumbled across Trudie Strobel, they understood they had encountered yet another person unique.
Strobel, a Holocaust survivor, was saved inside the camps many thanks to a needle and thread. Her mom was a grasp seamstress and utilised her present to assist her youngster cheat specified loss of life. Decades later on, when Strobel was doing the job via her inner thoughts about her knowledge throughout the Holocaust, she after again turned to the needle and thread - this time, to arise from a deep melancholy about her preceding.
“I needed to do a factor to come to feel superior,” Strobel claimed. “Stitching was the best sort of therapy for me.”
Strobel begun creating excellent tapestries. These is helpful caught the attention of Savin, an award-winning author, and filmmaker. She collaborated with photographer Ann Elliott Lowering to create the book, Stitched & Sewn: The Life-Saving Artwork of Holocaust Survivor Trudie Strobel.
Tumblr media
Supported by a grant from the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture, the e-book not only showcases Strobel’s operate but also seeks to help others process trauma and other hardships in their lives.
“All my life, I’ve looked at art to try to see the world by way of a different lens and reframe my own thinking,” Strobel claimed. “A fantastic piece of art can be therapeutic. It can calm you down or just be so awe-inspiring that you recognize the majesty of the world. It’s truly a spiritual practical experience.”
To get the word out about Strobel’s designs - and combat antisemitism at the same time - Savin and Miller are teaming up to generate a documentary about Strobel, antisemitism, and the Holocaust. Savin and Strobel continue to travel to speak with students at high schools and colleges about the Holocaust. This comes at a time when only 19 out of 50 states have Holocaust education, and antisemitism is increasing at an alarming rate.
“We know that Trudie’s story is going to touch people’s souls and support them understand the Holocaust,” mentioned Savin. “And filmmaking is a way to capture people’s attention and show the negative impact hate has on individuals and societies.”

Scarily cute- a face a mom would love? lol twitter. com/Rainmaker1973/status/1636370536124272642?s=20 Speaking of moms- did you know that Ke Huy Quan's adoptive parents in "Together We Stand" were David (Elliott Gould) & Lori Randall (Dee Wallace- mom on E.T.)? An episode plot on Brady Bunch was a backdoor pilot - Brady's friends plan to adopt a boy named Matt (Todd Lookinland, Mike Lookinland's brother) from a local orphanage. By chance they also adopt Matt's two best friends- of 2 pther races.
tarsier's are the definition of ugly cute, like, yes, they resemble alien gremlins, but they're just little guys!!! they're clingy tiny babies!
i did not know that! interesting how some backdoor pilots/spin-offs work out and get picked up, and others don't. the tarsier's hands remind me of E.T. 😂

LOSING CALIFORNIA - Howe About That Race
The final race at the 2-mile configuration of what is known as Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California saw its checkered flag Sunday night. The Xfinity series after being weather delayed for rain and snow brought a close to the historic speedway. However, it was the Cup series show earlier in the day I want to talk about, and it has me asking, Howe About That Race?
The Pala Casino 400 started with final 5 wide salute, a cool presentation of the cars, which if this racetrack is turned into a short track like is planned, (on the remaining 89 acres that NASCAR didn’t sell) it certainly won’t be wide enough for something like that. It also won’t be able to put on the kind of racing that this track has come to be known for. On restarts, there is plenty of room fan out, and make your car work in which ever lane it wants to.
Fontana also provided race fans proof that NASCAR knew what they were doing with the next gen race car design. Last year’s race at Auto Club was fantastic, and almost had a classic (for those of us who grew up on early 2000’s NASCAR) feel to it. Comers and goers, mechanical failures, and consequences for spins. Maybe too much consequence when drivers had flat tires. Ultimately though, the racing product was embraced by fans first at this track in 2022, and after 2023’s event, many of us are still wondering why Fontana must change, even if NASCAR had roughly half a million reasons to do so.
Sunday’s race opened with Alex Bowman going to the lead from pole sitter Christopher Bell. The field shuffled after an early competition caution, and second caution would follow shortly after Brad Keselowski got turned in a racing deal by Corey Lajoie. Last year, those two probably would have had that incident battling in the back half of the field. This year, both drivers were well inside the top 15, and they would both rebound to finish there, with Keselowski scoring a much needed early top 10.
Ross Chastain took the win in stage 1 and 2, with Daniel Suarez also showing good pace. Trackhouse showed that 2022 was not a fluke. One of the races more dramatic moments came on a restart when drivers tried to anticipate a restart at lap 87. Joey Logano took the entire length of a newly extended restart zone in 2023 to mash the gas, while drivers like Chastain behind Joey tried to get a run by lagging back. When the 22 didn’t go, they had to lift or brake and soon the often talked about accordion effect took place and 10 drivers piled into the wreck, the main victims being Reddick, Bell, Almirola, and Preece.
Chastain got back to the front and the race settled into rhythm. There were multiple great battles between drivers throughout the field as the mix of this next gen car and the worn-out surface of Auto Club Speedway proved to be a rewarding mix for fans. A driver who found himself in plenty of great battles was Kyle Busch. The driver of #8 for Richard Childress Racing has had a great start to 2023 by having a podium finish at the Clash, and probably should have won the Daytona 500. After losing track position thanks to an early speeding penalty, Busch drove back through the field and emerged as the main competition to Chastain.
The success of the RCR #8 shouldn’t have been a surprise to anyone. Crew Chief Randall Burnett and team brought Tyler Reddick a fast piece last year and repeated the performance this season. The difference? Burnett didn’t push tire pressures to the point of causing a flat, and Kyle Busch is now the man behind the wheel. Busch did not waste the opportunity, running down Chastain before a green flag pit stop cycle. Busch and the #8 crew got out ahead of the #1 and drove off to score the victory. Chase Elliott was awfully fast on the final stretch of green flag racing but would settle for second getting passed Chastain with 20 to go.
Kyle Busch made it 19 consecutive seasons with a victory, in his second points race for his third team ever in Richard Childress Racing. This pairing looks lethal early. Busch is motivated, the team is quickly bonding to their new driver. With Reddick winning 3 races in the same equipment last year, this win could be the catalyst for Busch to smash those numbers. It’s early, but Kyle Busch should be considered a championship contender. We probably won’t know who a favourite for the title is in ’23 until after the Coke 600 in May at Charlotte. However, if Busch and team can continue this consistency, and finish the west coast swing with solid finishes, it will go a long way to keep one of NASCAR’s greatest drivers focused on not just regaining former glory, but focused on what could be a very special year.
So, there it is, a driver who won his first cup series race at the 2-mile track in Fontana, California, wins the last on the configuration. Whether NASCAR can create a successful short track with what land is left in their possession remains to be seen. Regardless, this 2-mile track will be missed by fans and drivers, and 2023’s race proved why. That’s just my take, so what’s yours? I ask you, Howe About That Race?

A town on the borderlands of Texas. A place out of time. A desert where strange lights dance in the night sky. A mecca for lovers of minimalist art. A landscape of lost horses, freaks and food trucks. And then there’s the giant lemon. An award winning film by The Brothers McLeod. bromc.uk
