Another thing about Ed's comment that he doesn't have any friends...I don't think it's possible to really understand his descent back into the Blackbeard persona at the end of s1 unless you believe him.

Now, I do think it's pretty obvious why we should take Ed at his word when he sobs to Stede in a bathtub that he doesn't have any friends. Ed's definition of what he means by "friend" is clear; there are other pirates whose company he enjoys and who he's happy to see, but they are not the kind of "friend" with whom he can share emotional intimacy. And Jack showing up a couple episodes later reinforces this - Jack's there to let us know Ed wasn't fucking kidding. They might look like friends on first glance but they're sure as fuck not, because in the culture of piracy fucking each other over is just a given.

Stede was Ed's very first friend, the first person who he got to be vulnerable and authentic with. And in s1e10, Ed dares to believe he can be friends with the rest of the crew, too. He invites them in, he's vulnerable in front of them, he enthusiastically accepts their support. One of the reasons he starts feeling better is probably because he's thinking that he may have been abandoned by the man he loves, but he still has friends and can have that emotional support.

So when Izzy threatens him? That's not just a huge crushing blow because Izzy is saying Ed's better off dead and his behavior isn't acceptable. It hurts all the more because it's telling Ed he was foolish to think he could have friendship. Ed extended Izzy a lot of grace; he seemed willing to forgive Izzy for his actions in s1, still inviting him to speak his mind (inviting Izzy to share and be emotionally vulnerable with him, too).

It feels like Izzy is fucking him over, just like pirates do when you start treating them like your friends. Suddenly, the crew cheering Ed's name and asking him for another song doesn't feel like friendship and support anymore. Suddenly, it feels like a threat, like he would be inviting more mockery, like he would just be asking to be hurt.

The vessel did not understand time. How long ago had it been sealed inside the temple? How long ago had it crawled out of the abyss? How long ago had She cried out Her last scream? How long ago had the vessel's half-sister found it laying pathetically on the ground of the temple? It simply did not know.

What it did know was that its half-sister had dragged it out of that dreadful place, up through a forgotten road and through a well to a little town. What it did know was that now it had tilted its head up to look at the strange ceiling of a seemingly infinite cavern. The vessel wasn't even sure if it could trust its eyes, vision damaged by Her burning light. The swirling-soft patterns up above seemed to move, but the vessel wasn't sure if that was even possible. Maybe it had stood there next to that well for millennia, enough for even stones to twist and curl into new shapes. Suddenly, its half-spider half-sister cut its thoughts short with her speech:

"I suppose you haven't been to the surface before. This is where the known ends and the endless begins."

The vessel turned its head to her. It had learned from Father that looking at the one speaking to you was considered polite.

"The clouds seem to interest you. I wasn't all that different when I saw the sky for the first time."

Ah. The surface. They were now standing above the kingdom, below the clouds. Surface. It should've remembered this from the numerous maps it had seen growing up. How shameful of the not-bug that sacrificed itself for Hallownest to not know its caverns like the back of its hand.

The vessel turned its face upwards, this time aware that what it was seeing were clouds. It stared at the sky until Hornet told it to go to one of the abandoned houses to rest. It did not want to disappoint its half-sister, so it followed her. The vessel was not used to resting, but it trusted her when she said it would make it feel better. She, if either of them, would know what's best for healing. She was not so fundamentally broken. Maybe next morning it would not hurt so much.
