Talking to Palestinian Refugees as a Diaspora Jew
These are quotes from a discussion I encountered and I believe will bring insight to many, on both sides of the conflict.
It starts as follows:
"There is this one woman who sings for a local band and is from a Palestinian family. She often tells the story of how her family owned a house and a shop in Ashkelon but during the war of independence they had to leave their house and ended up in a refugee tent city in Gaza. Eventually they made there way to Cairo and then to America. She has the key to the family's old Ashkelon house that her grandfather passed down to her father, passed down to her and will show people it to tell about how she lost her homeland. Something she often says is "how come they get to be on the land because their ancestors were there 2000 years ago but I can't even go to the land my grandfather was at 75 years ago?"
how am I supposed respond to that? Am I really supposed to say no you don't have a right to your family's land???"
The answers I found most insightful:
• You can empathize with her families story while still realizing that the Palestinian leadership is failing her people.
• Half of my family were forced out of their home in North Africa and ethnically cleansed from there alongside nearly 1M other Jews. My grandparents did not get to keep the keys to their house or business because that’s not usually what happens when you get kicked out. they came to Israel with nothing but the clothes they were wearing. We didn’t even know grandmother’s birthdate because their citizenships were revoked. They lived in tents for months and a new disease was spreading every week. How come I’m still not legally allowed where my grandparents were born? How come Palestinians are eternal refugees and my grandparents weren’t? The irony here is just insane.
• Not to mention Arab countries encouraged Palestinians to leave and return once the genocide (war) is over: "This will be a war of extermination and a momentous massacre which will be spoken of like the Mongolian massacres and the Crusades." - 1st secretary of the Arab league, 1948.
• “The Arab states encouraged Palestinian Arabs to leave” - Jordan’s newspaper, Feb 19, 1949
• “it must not be forgotten that the Arab higher committee encouraged refugees’ flight from Jaffa, Haifa and Jerusalem” - near East Arabic broadcasting station, April 3, 1949
• “since 1948 it is we who demanded the return of the refugees while it is we who made them leave. We brought disaster upon Arab refugees…”- Khaled Al Azm, Syria’s prime minister.
• Refugees all over the world (including Jews!) are forced to leave their homes. They make new lives in new lands. I don't hold onto the key of my great-grandparents' house in Belarus and demand the government give me our house and try to kill random Belorussians because of it.
• A quarter of Baghdad in the 30' was Jewish. My friend's grandparents came from there, they were so rich her grandmother didn't even know how to brush her own hair or dress herself because they had servants. They had to leave everything behind and live in a tin hut in Israel. Wars cause population to move. It's a tragedy but it's been happening everywhere. You think Germans were happy about leaving their homes in what is Poland today? I don't see them trying to go home to Poland.

Hi! Just wanna let you know that the pet fundraiser from 'flurrbum' is a scam. For more info, there's a post about this person and how to identify their posts here, an archive of their posts, blogs, avatars, asks etc here, and a detailed post on general scam red flags here
The main giveaways for this scammer are: 1) their oldest post is only a few hours old. 2) They use USD $ in their post, but if you hover over the paypal link, it says 'country=PH', which is Philippines, where they use Philippine pesos 3) They sent you a random ask out of the blue, and possibly asked not to answer it publicly so they don't show up in searches 4) They reused the paypal (ladouceurr142) and cat photos from previous scams, the PSA post for this with reference links is here
I'm sending this message to as many people as I can to warn them and share some tips :) You can report the scammer through 'report something else', 'unlawful uses or content', then 'phishing'. Some people delete the reblogged post, others keep it up and put huge warnings in the reblog text field and tags to warn others (this also annoys the scammer because they have to waste time blocking people to hide the comments). Have a nice day!
Hi oh my gosh
Thank you for letting me know you're a Saint! I think I've defo learned to be more careful now. I was originally going to delete it but actually I think I'll keep it up and put a warning on as you have said in your message others have done.
Thanks for sending me the links in your ask, I think I'm gonna view them all make sure I never go into these asks blindly I'd hate to have reblogged something that is scamming people.
Hope you have a lovely day too!!

Disability, Media And Representation: A Topic That Needs To Be Talked About More
Disability, Media And Representation: A Topic That Needs To Be Talked About More
I am back with a new blog today to talk about a subject that is quite close to my heart. One of my favourite past times is reading, watching TV and generally just consuming a lot of media over the past 20 years or so, but something that has always been a bit of an annoyance for me has been the lack of disability representation in however many books I may have read, shows I have watched and movies…

Too Much
Doing some reading I found “structural dissociation.” That could make sense. Having the Self and the Traumatized self. Not quite DID. But I’m definitely not alone in my head.
« Under normal circumstances, we would want to avoid our abuser and never go back to them. When we were a child, however, we had to stay. We had few options, and even when our parents hurt us, we could not leave. So instead of physically exiting, we psychologically withdrew. »
Reality makes me ill.
« If we knew our parents could not tolerate disobedience, or that we would be punished for creating conflicts, it made sense for us to swallow the pain rather than risk confronting them. We dared not be critical of the authority whose goodwill was essential to our survival.
This may result in the psychodynamic process of "turning against oneself," where we redirect anger and resentment for others toward ourselves. Our righteous anger became internalized guilt and shame that were unbearable, so we had to create a "separate self" in our mind to survive the invasion.  »
I held onto so much self hatred. For years I chanted in my head everything was my fault. Everything was my fault.... I wanted to stop but I couldn’t seem to stop my self destruction.... I wanted it all to stop.
Will this make a difference?
« Chronically traumatized individuals can suffer from a form of dissociation known as structural dissociation, which is a lack of cohesion and integration of personality. Structural dissociation causes the inability to regulate emotions and a chronic feeling of emptiness within.
Having structural dissociation means we are split into different parts, each with a different personality, feelings, and behavior. As a result, we feel completely different from moment to moment. One moment we feel strong and happy, the next moment we feel empty and numb, then we feel rage. It might all happen suddenly without an apparent trigger. »
I feel nothing... Yet I feel everything.
« Despite carrying painful memories, people with complex trauma still have to find a way to get on with their normal lives. In order to do that, we develop a "normal" facade—this is our "normal self." This part of us feels little, remembers little, hardly feels any hunger, desires, or sadness, and is an efficient worker. While on the surface we seem to function fine, the "traumatized self" may from time to time burst through, causing uncontrollable and apparently unexplainable behaviors.
We carry our traumatized self everywhere we go.
Our traumatized part sees danger, criticisms, and abandonment everywhere, and has a hard time receiving love.
It is frozen in time, so when our traumatized part takes over, we feel like a child in an adult body.
It is always on guard, always waiting to be harmed or betrayed.
It controls our body and emotions in ways we are not always conscious of. For instance, when we grind our teeth at night, or when we burst into an uncontrollable rage.
We Start Avoiding Life »
Life is poison.
« The Wise, Healthy Part
Apart from the Apparently Normal Part and the Traumatized Part, there is another essential part of us: Our Wise Part. No matter how traumatized we are, our innate driving force towards wholeness and health does not cease completely.
When we are being self-critical, our wise part whispers in our ears telling us we are worthy of love.
It absorbs wisdom from loved ones, teachers, and resources, then acts as our inner guiding light. »
Maybe he’s dead. There never seems to be that voice.
« It is the part of us that honors our authenticity and tell us to be honest with our feelings. »
Or he’s really fucking quiet.
Though, it doesn’t matter, does it? I’ll keep putting up the act. I moved onto animated my rig today. Told everyone I was proud. I don’t really feel anything. No accomplishment. Just tired. I can’t wait until the end of the year. Or whenever the stories dry up.
Maybe it does matter. I can identify the Traumatized part. I can see what he’s ben hiding from me. Find more stories to tell. Explain how I am better. Give better meaning and reason for leaving.
