LECTURE 12: IN THE SHADOW OF THE BEATLES: Gerry and the Pacemakers from Liverpool perform their biggest hit, “Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying,” a #1 smash in the UK, which climbed to an impressive #4 in the United States. The studio version is quite possibly the most hauntingly beautiful British Invasion song of all time in the humble opinion of this lowly blogger. This live version is charming, but not quite as moody and atmospheric and sublime as the studio recording. This is from the band’s appearance on  The Ed Sullivan Show on May 3, 1964. Like Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas and Cilla Black, Gerry and the Pacemakers scored big early on, but their success was not to last, and by 1966 they disbanded.

Quote
Still, old sources of angst occasionally encroached on Mr. Koch’s post-mayoral life. He shared an apartment building with Mr. Kramer, who mumbled to his dog about “the man who killed all of daddy’s friends” when they passed in the lobby.

The Year of Alice
Shiva Loka ~  Alice Coltrane News that a live recording of Alice Coltrane’s previously unreleased 1971 Carnegie Hall concert was about to drop caused excitement in Jazz circles. 2024, designated by Impulse ‘The Year of Alice’, will see other Alice projects realised, and Shiva Loka is the opener. The quality is great, even though it doesn’t have the degree of sound separation a studio recording…

Writer Nancy Collins is in great need.
She has taken some hits over the years, but none more damaging than what happened after she blew the whistle about serial abuser Ed Kramer who preyed on kids for many years and who was finally sent to jail after decades of cover ups.
Kramer was well-connected, and the controversy nearly destroyed Nancy's career. She was treated abominably.
I hope you'll share this and consider helping Nancy at this difficult time.

Izzy IS about community. He’s ALWAYS BEEN about community in his own messed up way. The Canyon was right and the haters were wrong.
He wanted Blackbeard back because that was what kept the crew safe. He was terrible about it and hurt the man he obviously loves in the process, but it WAS for the greater good. It wasn’t a purely selfish act the antis love to frame it as. He wanted to feel safe again and he wanted the crew to be safe as well.
Hell, he was doing his best to help Edward through his post-breakup depression. He didn’t understand what was going on and was clearly distressed by it but he provided what Ed needed. He *knew* he lacked the emotional capacity to help his captain himself so he agreed to bring him Lucius. I really think he would have just gritted his teeth and suffered through it if Ed didn’t say the one thing that could collapse his whole world.
"Why do we even bother being pirates?" That was what freaked Izzy out so much that he pushed Edward to violence. Not because he selfishly wanted Ed to be close at all times but because Blackbeard the legend was the pillar of his community. That legend kept everyone safe and even if Izzy is a horrible asshole, he *does* care about his crew. He knows the world is a horrible hostile place and he focuses on risk mitigation, even if it means hurting the one person he really cares about.
He really tried to provide that to the crew when Edward and Stede took the Act of Grace. It was a terribly misguided attempt at keeping things under control and it was certainly influenced by his submissive tendencies which make him crave structure and feel safe within hierarchies. He *knows* he lacks Ed's charisma and ability to think outside the box and with such huge shoes to fill it's not really surprising he acted out in anger and in result failed miserably. But he was *NEVER* an asshole just for the sake of it.
Now he realizes those days are gone for good. He's already done everything he could to bring Ed back to his senses, including using *Stede fuckin' Bonnet’s* name. It didn’t work. The realization that his one true safeguard is really gone must be terrible, but it also pushes him to take action.
The moment he realizes the crew are in real danger, he takes things into his own hands. He not only goes against the hierarchy he believed to be sacred but also against the man he *LOVES*. He fucking shoots his beloved captain to save the crew. You don’t get much more *community* than that.
He is clearly struggling. He's just tried to fucking kill himself after being maimed AND told he was disposable by a man whom he's apparently served for dacades. He will have to reevaluate his whole life and he *knows* it. But he puts it all to the side and he does what needs to be done. He took all of Edward’s abuse without complaint it seems but the moment the crew are in real danger, he intervenes. You can’t tell me a community (*any* community) doesn’t need people like that.
It all feels very old-time queer to me. The willingness to make terrible sacrifices to protect one's space. The decision (conscious or not) to be effective rather than liked. The choice to stay alive despite terrible heartbreak and go on fighting.
He's absolutely NOT an irredimable villain. He’s an asshole who tries to keep his little world safe. He’s Larry Kramer getting kicked out of GMHC for being too confrontational and politically incorrect to be palatable to the general public.

Mind if I ask if there was anything that led you to cast the characters as the specific animals you did for the Saw zodiac piece?? Like I KNOW you had to work with the animals within the Chinese zodiac, but...why the goat for Kramer, the monkey for Amanda, and so forth??? Was it based on birthdays or character traits, or something like that??
I really like that piece and I want to give u a platform to talk about it more lmao
Like you said, my choices were limited to the animals within the zodiac. It was a fun little challenge mixing and matching each animal to a character that I felt suited them (personality-wise in some cases, appearance-wise in others.) More under the cut, for those interested.
Tumblr media
Amanda (Monkey) - Jumps between mischievously playful and sadistically cruel. In possession of ten clever little fingers, perfect for rigging traps…
John (Goat) - Stubborn + stoutly adheres to his beliefs. Sporting a pair of curving horns that play into the spiral motif very nicely. Enjoys playing God and doling out punishment, much like a certain other horn-ed fellow who spends his days disciplining ‘sinners’.
Jill (Sow) - Seemed like an easy choice considering the Tuck family’s pig farm. I also wanted to call back to Gideon and what could have been.
Hoffman (Tiger) - Large, imposing and solitary. (Almost) always one step ahead. Tigers having illusory eyes on the backs of their ears to throw off stalking predators feels extremely Hoffman to me. Getting the jump on him is nearly impossible. Nearly.
Strahm (Dog) - Not just any dog, a GSD. Sharp as a whip, wary as a watchman. Commonly used by law enforcement. Loyal to those he considers friends, aloof and standoffish to just about everybody else...
Cecilia (Dragon) - Much like a dragon, Cecilia would be right at home curled atop a mountain of treasure. Even what she promises / advertises seems mythical - the kind of miracle that only exists within a fantasy...
Logan (Ox) - ‘It’s cause you’re always in that damn BARN.’ A farm animal through and through. He's John’s heir apparent, a faint outline of him, complete with a similarly horned silhouette.
Lawrence (Rabbit) - Larry was one of the ‘lucky’ ones, and what's more lucky than a rabbit's foot? ( Do you think he carries his severed foot around on his keys in this AU ? )
Adam (Rat) - I mean…
Tumblr media
Schenk (Snake) - People will probably assume that I picked a snake because he’s ‘deceitful’ (I actually think his rage was justified. ACAB.) but I actually just wanted to incorporate spirals onto him in an organic way. Snakes, with their intricate scale patterns, allowed me to do just that.
Who’s left? Zep Hindle screams 'chicken' to me and Lynn has beautiful flowing hair that lends itself perfectly to a horsey.
🤙

Hello sir!
I'm currently reading The Sandman: Book of Dreams anthology and I am absolutely loving it! My favorite short stories so far are Barbara Hambly's Each Damp Thing and Susanna Clarke's Stopp't-Clock Yard.
Do you have a personal favorite in the collection? And seeing as you're credited as the editor of the anthology along with Ed Kramer, what do you think is the status of these short stories in terms of being canon in the Sandman universe?
I hope you're doing well. Thank you!
I don't think any of them are canon unless you want them to be.
Stopp't-Clock Yard was my very favourite of all of them.

I don’t know if this counts as a hot take, but I lowkey wish that “Saw X” had been made before “Jigsaw”. It’s mainly because I feel Carlos would’ve been a decent candidate if he took over the Logan Nelson/New Jigsaw role.
The story practically writes itself. Carlos, an orphan, looks to John Kramer as a father figure and his savior since he kept him alive during the blood-boarding trap. He spends several years honing his craft, hoping to become as good as John.
Cut to several years later, the Jigsaw copycat killer is on the loose. You got a team of detectives looking for him, including a pathologist named Logan Nelson. In the movie’s twist ending, it’s revealed “Logan” is not only this new Jigsaw, he’s actually Carlos, who took on a new identity when he moved to America. So instead of being a random test subject who John took pity on, Carlos/Logan is literally the son-figure of Jigsaw.
In this way, the story of “X” would act as an ending for John Kramer and the beginning of the new Jigsaw. Like a messed up passing of the torch. Also, imagine how fun it’d be for the writers to drop clues to Logan’s true identity. Stuff like:
1) You see him fixing up a bike
2) Logan says he was born in Mexico but moved to the US when he was young
3) Even though he’s a pathologist, Logan doesn’t like getting blood all over his face since it reminds him of getting blood-boarded
Side note, before anyone mentions this, this new version of “Jigsaw” would obviously have to be updated to match the new story details. So, some characters and plot elements may stay, others will have to be cut.
(Just for fun, I’m picturing Gabriel Luna as older Carlos/Logan Nelson in this new continuity. I think he could pull it off)

Hey i was wondering if you could do a dano!Riddler x reader where the reader asks Eddie to watch Saw and he loves the traps
A/N: Hell yeah I can! Because he'd be all over that! I'm not gonna lie, when I saw the rat maze contraption around the commissioner's head I was reminded of the reverse bear trap. It wouldn't surprise me if Reeves also took inspiration from Palpat-I mean John Kramer (oops, it's the robe sorry not sorry) for inspiration. Hope you guys enjoy it! Also! anything both bolded and italicized is a quote from the film...no I didn't rewatch the first Saw for this...maybe...
Trigger Warnings: spoilers for Saw 1 (albeit it's like almost 20 years old rip), demented thoughts of violence and murder, cause duh. Although nothing is explicitly described, gore-wise.
Word Count: 1.5 k
Dano!Riddler x Reader - Wanna Play a Game?
Once Edward’s swirling vengeful thoughts got combined with indisputable facts he found. Facts that gave credence to his underlying hatred and proved that Gotham City is corrupt and that something has to be done.
He had to do something.
To don a mask, be a symbol for the city and its elite that chooses to reap not from what they've sown but from those that suffer and without consequence.
"Hey Eddie, wanna watch a movie tonight? I think you'll really enjoy this one!"
Ah, and then there was you.
You deserved so much better. You deserved a city that cared, a city that helped, and a city that loved. When you two had met, Edward saw light for the very first time in Gotham.
You two were regulars at the diner down the street from his apartment only to find out you lived in the same complex. It still confounds him that you were still here, you chose to stay here. That you chose to stay…and stay with him.
He had to do something, he had to make the city better. Better for you, to make space for your light to shine through.
"C-Coming!" Edward tucked his pen in between the pages of his ledger, marked where he left off and pushed the pad to the side.
The unmistakable sound of popping, signaled him to know you were in the kitchen. However he turned to look and the microwave was on but you weren't there.
"Gotcha!" You wrapped your arms around his soft frame and leaned your head into his back.
Ed jolted but instantly relaxed when he felt your familiar warmth. He placed his arms around yours and chuckled softly.
"Did I scare you?" You asked.
He turned down to see your face squished against his green sweatshirt. Your eyes creased from your wide smile as you beamed at him. Beamed him with your light.
He chuckled softly, “you did! You got me!”
You giggled. You squeezed your grasp around him one more time before tending to the freshly popped popcorn in the microwave.
“Go sit down on the couch. I’ll be right there!”
“Okay, what exactly are we watching tonight?”
“Well, since it’s spoopy season, I figured we can start with a modern classic slasher flick.”
Ed took a seat on the couch and bunched up the quilt over his lap. His head popped up at your statement, his eyebrows quirked in confusion.
“Did you just say…spoopy?”
You nod. “Yeah, why?”
“Don’t you mean spooky?”
You shrugged, “but spoopy is cuter, and I’m cute so it’s well within my cuteness privileges to use it.”
Ed blinked to try and process this new information, but you are cute and he wasn’t going to argue that fact. He nodded, “point taken.”
“That also means you can say it too.” You hopped on the cushion next to him. Some popcorn flying out of the bowl. Ed laughed before taking the bowl from you so you could get under the covers and comfortable.
When it finally hit Edward’s mind what you were implying. Ed’s face started to flush a faint pink color. Ed chuckled shyly, “i-it may take awhile to get used to that.”
“What spoopy?”
“Well, yes, but mostly being referred to as cute…”
You smiled sweetly before you lean in to plant a sweet kiss on his cheek. “Just you wait, Nashton. I’ll have you believe a lot of things about yourself as straight facts!”
He shook his head bashfully, he doesn’t fully believe you, but he sure won’t stop you from trying.
“Anyway, have you ever heard of the Saw movies? They’re pretty gruesome but they’ve become classics in their own right.”
“I-I think so…I’ve seen the puppet character on a tricycle, but that’s it.”
“Ah, yeah, that’s Billy, I think you’ll like it. Atleast the first one, there’s like seven or eight of these. The first three aren’t so bad. You ready?” You asked as you snuggled into Edward’s side.
“Ready when you are.” He smiled as he wrapped an arm around you, perfectly encased you into him.
You pressed play.
“I want to play a game.”
Little did you know of just how much you just opened up to Edward’s mind.
The traps were primitive, solvable, but excruciating and gruesome.
The victims, the people who didn’t appcreciate their lives. The panic and fear in their wide bloodshot eyes. Their fictional lives flashing before their eyes as they struggle to survive.
This is what Edward wants the mayor, the DA, the commissioner…most of all Carmine Falcone to endure. To bring forth his own renewal.
What if the traps weren’t solvable…well…not the traps themselves…
The scene with Jigsaw’s second victim began. A naked man named Mark is smothered in flammable gel but must use the burning candle to illuminate the safe combinations to get access to the antidote for a slow-acting poison running in his veins. Meanwhile, slowly cut his feet with every step he took on the glass-covered floor.
What if it was another puzzle they had to solve…a cypher…riddles…?
Ed’s eyes widened at that idea. You looked over and notice your boyfriend went pretty quiet, but it was obvious he was very engrossed in what was going on. You had a feeling he’d be into it.
You just had no idea how right you were.
Whenever a new trap, a new game as Jigsaw put it, showed up on screen; you felt Edward squeezed your hand but he never once wavered his view away from the screen. To say he was transfixed was an understatement.
You had no doubt his mind was going into hyperdrive. Analyzing all the possibilities, the set-ups, the machinations of the traps, the clues, and how he’d escape and outsmart the killer. You didn’t doubt he would probably realize the twist to it all and how everyone left was theoretically connected.
Well, you were partially right. Yes, Ed did figure out the connection between the men in bathroom, and he did deduce Jigsaw to Kramer.
“-sick of people who don’t appreciate their blessings! Sick of those who scoff at the suffering of others! I’m sick of it all!”
Yes, Edward Nashton was sick of it too.
As Jigsaw closed the doors on one of the victims, Adam, in the dilapidated bathroom to rot. The film ended and the credits began to roll.
“Well, whatcha think, Eddie?”
You shook him when there was no response. “Ed.”
“Hm?”
“What do you think? Pretty smart, huh? Amazing what two film graduates and a 1.2 million dollar budget can pull off…”
“Y-Yeah, that…that was definitely intriguing.” He nodded. His brain was still taking it all in. This was how he could do it…how he could set forth his own renewal for Gotham, in his own way.
You got up to put away the empty popcorn bowl in the sink and to get a fresh beverage from the fridge. Ed was still on the couch, lingering in his own thoughts.
“Hey…uh..Y/N?”
“Yeah, babe?”
He inhaled a little, he wasn’t used to that term of endearment either. “Didn’t you say this was a series?”
“Yeah, they made like eight different ones…I think the last two were spin-offs though. Why?” You came back from the kitchen, you had your preferred drink in one hand, and a hot chocolate for Edward in the other.
“C-Could we watch the next one, i-if you don’t mind that is…”
“No not at all, I’m surprised, you seem really into it.” You smiled, happy to see Edward enjoying something new, somewhat.
You set your drink down and go to set up the next film. You didn’t even notice Ed had leaped up from his seat and ran back to his office. When you turn around to take your seat, you saw him with one of his ledgers and a pen primed and ready on a blank page.
You quirked your eyebrow, “is there a quiz on this I’m not aware about?”
He looked up at you and then down at his supplies. He chuckles nervously, “oh…uh…no, no. Nothing like that, I just…wanna jot down these clues. I can only imagine things will get more complex with every new installment.”
You shrugged, he wasn’t necessarily wrong, and with how his brain worked it didn’t surprise you. He looked pretty cute wrapped up in a quilt with his pen and paper. Pushing his glasses back in their proper position.
“Have I told you how absolutely adorable you are, Eddie?” You took your seat again, right next to him and under the quilt. You wrapped your arms around his and buried your cheek into his arm.
“Y-Yes you’ve implied it a couple times today…” He blushed.
“Okay, just making sure I’m reaching my daily quota.” You kissed his cheek, and corrected his glasses for him when they fell off the bridge of his nose.
You pressed play once again.
I want to play a game.
A game indeed…Edward thought as he started writing.

attempting to write an actual response to the problem of saw but... im actually getting so fucking bewildered reading this that i can barely type up a response. every sentence of this paper is SATURATED with hatred for the series, right from the beginning. sharrett is slinging mud at a made-up version of the saw franchise, distorting the actual text and framing of each movie until it becomes something it never was. he is writing this for an audience who already disapproves of these movies without ever having seen them.
in what world can a film critic not understand the idea of an unreliable narrator? the concept of self-deception? "john kramer is the most active character in (nearly) every movie, and he fully believes in his flawed worldview and acts confidently according to it... so is he being framed as the good guy?! and some people online sure seem to like him, too!"
the way that sharrett spends the majority of the article waffling about other movies which he seems to have an extreme distaste for as well only serves to distract the reader and to suggest that he's making some kind of intelligent point by wandering aimlessly and using some big words. it's smoke and mirrors. none of it has anything to do with the supposed problem of saw, which sharrett cannot actually confront in detail because it is not there. it does not exist the way he wants it to exist. he is arguing with a made-up version of the series.
if you want to argue that john kramer is framed as a hero, then you have to ignore every time that the series points out his hypocrisy or general fucked up-edness, through text or through subtext. it's truly astounding to me that a professional film critic would need to have his hand held through a movie to figure out who's the bad guy. in the first movie, adam is tested because he does not appreciate his life. by the end, he is screaming that he wants to live. his death was rigged. you can't see that the movie is framing that as something fucked up? as something tragic? in the second movie, we see the extent to which john has manipulated and ruined amanda's life. do you have such little faith in the average moviegoer that you think they'd see that as a noble thing of him to do? do you think the movie is honestly justifying daniel's psychological and physical torment? if this is all too subtle for you, what does amanda's confrontation with john in the third movie mean to you? what does it mean to you?
this is all ignoring the behind-the-scenes context of saw. while the increasingly sensational gore of the later movies reflect societal trends, it's important to understand how and why this happened. saw was made by two broke australian film students, leigh whannell (writer/actor) and james wan (director). the idea of a slowly unraveling mystery set in a single room came about from budget constraints--they wanted a film to shoot in just one location. leigh's anxieties about health inspired the "hey, wouldnt it be crazy if..." idea of a serial killer with cancer who tortures others to vicariously make them "appreciate their lives." from the get-go, john is portrayed as a hypocritical monster--again, see the way adam's trap was shown to be unbeatable from the start through no fault of his own.
neither leigh nor james expected saw to get big, and its success was unprecedented. the one shocking scene at the end of lawrence severing his foot (a rather bloodless scene, mind you) amidst an extremely high-energy ending created lots of buzz, and saw was a very unique film for the time. the more intense second film was co-written by leigh, as it began as a script someone else wrote that was reworked into a saw movie. lionsgate, as any other corporation would, wanted to include more of the stuff that made people talk about their movie: gore. and so, it was ramped up. rinse and repeat for the rest of the movies, remove the original creators after the third movie, and insert a soap opera storyline of succession, family ties, and betrayal for the more dedicated fans to follow along with and feel rewarded for keeping up with ... and here you are.
(it is interesting that sharrett seems to think john kramer's complete dedication to his ideology must mean he is being framed as smart or correct. i, for one, can understand the difference between someone acting and talking like they're right versus actually being right. it's why i disagree with this article instead of blindly lapping it up because sharrett speaks with conviction.)
this paper is not about saw. not only does the author misrepresent the film series, but 85% of the actual text is about other fucking movies with no tie-in back to saw. the point sharrett is trying to make is shrouded in unrelated pompous bullshit about how he had some problems with that one jodie foster movie's portrayal of sexuality and blah blah blah blah fucking blah. this article only serves to affirm the biases of people who have never seen saw but have already made up their minds about it. it misrepresents the plot, narrative framing, and especially the portrayal of john kramer. also he calls billy ugly which is by far the worst.

- Maestro, non so fare niente.
