A Common Destiny for All

1 I had my mind consider all this. Wise and good people and everything they do are in God's hands. Love or hate—who knows what will happen to them? 2 Yet we all share the same destiny—those who do right, those who do evil, the good, the religiously-observant and those that are not, those who sacrifice and those who don't. Those who do good are as those who sin, those who make vows to God are as those who don't.

3 This is just so wrong—that everyone here on earth should suffer the same fate! On top of that, people's minds are filled with evil. They spend their lives thinking about stupid things, and then they die. 4 But the living still have hope—a live dog is better than a dead lion!

5 The living are conscious of the fact that they're going to die, but the dead have no consciousness of anything. They don't receive any further benefit; they're forgotten. 6 Their love, hate, and envy—it's all gone. They have no further part in anything that happens here on earth.

7 So go ahead and eat your food, and enjoy it. Drink your wine with a happy heart. That's what God intends that you should do. 8 Always wear smart clothes and look good. 9 Enjoy life with the wife that you love—the one God gave you—during all the days of this brief life, all these passing days whose meaning is so hard to understand as you work here on earth. 10 Whatever you do, do it with all your strength, for when you go to the grave there's no more working or thinking, no more knowing or being wise.

11 I thought about other things that happen here on earth. Races are not always won by the fastest runner. Battles are not always decided by the strongest warrior. Also, the wise do not always have food, intelligent people do not always make money, and those who are clever do not always win favor. Time and chance affect all of them.

12 You can't predict when your end will come. Just like fish caught in a net, or birds caught in a trap, so people are suddenly caught by death when they least expect it.

13 Here's another aspect of wisdom that impressed me about what happens here on earth. 14 Once there was a small town with only a few inhabitants. A powerful king came and besieged the town, building great earth ramps against its walls. 15 In that town lived a man who was wise, but poor. He saved the town by his wisdom. But no one remembered to thank that poor man. 16 As I've always said, “Wisdom is better than strength.” Yet the wisdom of that poor man was dismissed—people didn't pay attention to what he said. 17 It's better to listen to the calm words of a wise person than the shouts of a ruler of fools. 18 It's better to have wisdom than weapons of war; but a sinner can destroy a lot of good. — Ecclesiastes 9 | Free Bible Version (FBV) The Free Bible Version is a project of Free Bible Ministry; Copyright © 2018, Free Bible Ministry. Oh one of my other favourite bible references so far is Dulcie’s “Goodbye, Palamedes, my first strand--goodbye Camilla, my second...one cord was overpowered, two cords could defend themselves, but three were not broken by the living or the dead,” a riff on (or like tbh almost word for word quote of) Ecclesiastes 4:12 “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken,” (which is one of my favourite bible verses bc i’m a sucker for friendship or whatever). This bit also hit for me because it emphasizes that Dulcinea didnt only have her whole thing with Palamedes but also valued Camilla highly--the three of them were all so close, so its really sad how it all turned out.

Death Comes to Good and Bad

1 All this I have kept in my heart and all this I examined: The just, the wise, and their deeds are in the hand of God. Love from hatred mortals cannot tell; both are before them. 2 Everything is the same for everybody: the same lot for the just and the wicked, for the good, for the clean and the unclean, for the one who offers sacrifice and the one who does not. As it is for the good, so it is for the sinner; as it is for the one who takes an oath, so it is for the one who fears an oath. 3 Among all the things that are done under the sun, this is the worst, that there is one lot for all. Hence the hearts of human beings are filled with evil, and madness is in their hearts during life; and afterward—to the dead!

4 For whoever is chosen among all the living has hope: “A live dog is better off than a dead lion.” 5 For the living know that they are to die, but the dead no longer know anything. There is no further recompense for them, because all memory of them is lost. 6 For them, love and hatred and rivalry have long since perished. Never again will they have part in anything that is done under the sun.

7 Go, eat your bread with joy and drink your wine with a merry heart, because it is now that God favors your works. 8 At all times let your garments be white, and spare not the perfume for your head. 9 Enjoy life with the wife you love, all the days of the vain life granted you under the sun. This is your lot in life, for the toil of your labors under the sun. 10 Anything you can turn your hand to, do with what power you have; for there will be no work, no planning, no knowledge, no wisdom in Sheol where you are going.

The Time of Misfortune Is Not Known.

11 Again I saw under the sun that the race is not won by the swift, nor the battle by the valiant, nor a livelihood by the wise, nor riches by the shrewd, nor favor by the experts; for a time of misfortune comes to all alike. 12 Human beings no more know their own time than fish taken in the fatal net or birds trapped in the snare; like these, mortals are caught when an evil time suddenly falls upon them.

The Uncertain Future and the Sages.

13 On the other hand I saw this wise deed under the sun, which I thought magnificent. 14 Against a small city with few inhabitants advanced a mighty king, who surrounded it and threw up great siegeworks about it. 15 But in the city lived a man who, though poor, was wise, and he delivered it through his wisdom. Yet no one remembered this poor man. 16 Though I had said, “Wisdom is better than force,” yet the wisdom of the poor man is despised and his words go unheeded.

Back To Basics Lesson 26: The Keys To Hades

“Do you want to know why I don’t believe in God, Phillip? If God is so loving, then why would He torture and burn sinners in hell for all of eternity? That just doesn’t sit right with me.”

What happens when you die? Do righteous people immediately go to heaven and sinners immediately go to hell? What does the Bible really teach about the state of the dead? Let’s find out in today’s lesson.

Let’s read together Genesis 2:7; Psalm 104:29; Ecclesiastes 12:7; and James 2:6.

In the beginning, God formed man from dust and the breath of life. When a person dies, the body goes back to dust and the “spirit” goes back to God. Note the “spirit” that returns to God is the breath of life (or God’s power, if you prefer). According to these verses, a soul is a living being. If we were to put this concept into a mathematical equation:

Dust + breath of life = soul

Contrary to popular belief, we do not have souls. We are souls!

Let’s read together Ezekiel 18:4; Ezekiel 18:20; 1 Timothy 1:17; and 1 Timothy 6:15-16.

The Bible uses the word “soul” over three hundred times, but never once uses “immortal soul.” There is no reference to humans ever having immortal souls. According to the Bible, only God has immortality.

Let’s read together Job 17:13; Ecclesiastes 9:10; Psalm 146:3-4; John 5:28-29; and Acts 2:29, 34.

People do not immediately go to heaven or hell when they die. If there is anyone in the Bible who would be in heaven right now, it would be King David. However, the Bible affirms David is not in heaven. Rather, he is dead and buried.

What about spiritual mediums who claim to speak to the dead or all those stories of people communicating with dead relatives?

Let’s read together Job 14:12, 21; Psalm 115:17; Psalm 146:4; Ecclesiastes 9:5-6; and John 11:11-14.

The Bible emphatically states the dead cannot communicate with the living, nor are they aware of what the living are doing. In fact, Jesus compares death to an unconscious sleep.

Then how do we explain all those experiences people have with spiritual mediums or dead relatives?

Let’s read together 1 Timothy 4:1 and Revelation 16:14.

The experiences of those people may have been real, but they were deceived by demons masquerading as their dead loved ones.

Let’s read together Job 15:25-27; Isaiah 25:8; Daniel 12:2; 1 Corinthians 15:50-58; John 3:16; and Revelation 1:17-18.

There are nonreligious people who have no hope beyond the grave. They believe death is the end for them. On the other hand, there are Christians who are fearful of eternal torment in hellfire. Both these groups are wrong.

The Bible teaches the wages of sin is death, not eternal torment. We do have hope beyond the grave. We have a Redeemer who has already conquered the grave - Jesus Christ!

When Jesus comes again, He will grant eternal life to those who believe in Him wholeheartedly as their Lord and Savior. Friend, will you believe what the Bible says about death and resurrection?
