You might be thinking, Tee, in your 2023 AO3 wrap up post, you said you wrote a ridiculous amount of HP fic this year - but what about reading? Well, thanks for asking, imaginary audience – as a matter of fact, I did indeed read a lot of Drarry fics this year. A fucking horrendous number of Drarry fics, in fact.

Below the cut are some of my favourites that were published in 2023, arranged by word count.

But first, a note: there is truly an overwhelming amount of talent in this fandom and this list only scratches the surface. These fics all gave me something that I was looking for and were my favourites for a number of different reasons. I hope you can find something new to love here (or reconnect with an old favourite), and that you enjoy these stories as much as I did!

Alrakis I [24M] attended a small boarding school in the UK. There was a boy in my year, a couple of months younger than me, and he became my nemesis after we developed an intense rivalry. My friend [25F] told me recently that our dynamic was "weird back then" and that "it’s even weirder" that I still think about him today. She argued that I talk about him all the time, but I believe the amount I talk about him is reasonable. AITA?

🪻 Recursion – Tessa Crowley (132k, E) 🪻

A process is recursive when it defines or contains itself; e.g., the Fibonacci sequence, which determines the next number as the sum of the previous two.

But not all recursive processes are mathematical. Recursion can happen in a temporal context when, for instance, the powerful magical force that is true love drags you back in time so it can create itself, endangering the fate of the Wizarding World—not to mention the very fabric of space and time—along the way.

Read for: Canon Retelling/Divergence, time travel, Slytherin Harry, a truly insane amount of physics/magical theory/intelligence. This fic was too smart for me in the best way. If you liked Chaos Theory read this – it’s even better!

legilimency sex is SO UNDERRATED. another fic that altered my brain chemistry and lives in my mind rent-free. established loving relationship, with draco knowing how to help and ruin harry. be his peace of mind and make him crackle with sexual need and wild magic. it's a truly delicious fic that is filthy, intimate, and comforting. "to forever and a day" is such a devastating declaration of love.

innerlilith knows how to write lust and tension with longing and gentleness. this is all about quidditch player harry and his sexy bodyguard draco, with a silly premise of hearing your love/hate crush wank loudly next door. the scene where draco begs to see more and how his words make harry turn into a puddle... the push and pull, the burning need, you just have to be there, the build up is so worth it.

There is so much he needs to explain, but his head is foggy and exhausted and he can't think properly, can't think of how to relay all that he's learned. "Have you heard of Alucinatio?" is what he starts with. "The Daydream potion," Hermione says. "The person who intakes it experiences very vivid and realistic daydreams of all they could ever want, but is essentially in a severely catatonic state out in the external world, incapable of any basic functions." Harry nods. "Somebody's given it to Malfoy." He remembers the tattered remains of a black coak wrapped around Malfoy. "I think it might have been Professor Snape." They take a minute to process that. I Do Not Love You by Writ_and_romance (228k)

In 2013, a carefully-designed Obliviation leaves Harry reconfiguring his life and identity without any memories of true love; an act that’s essentially erased Draco Malfoy from his mind despite a wedding band and shared home. Draco’s breath gets knocked out of him as Harry slides in, agonisingly slow, one hand on Draco’s arse cheek to keep him open for him and the other grasping Draco’s hand.

“Too fast?” Harry pants, pressing his forehead against Draco’s shoulder in an attempt to keep himself steady.

Draco only whines, nearly fucking himself on Harry out of pure desperation.

Harry watches himself disappear inside Draco’s body for a moment, relishing the show Draco has decided to perform for him. Until it entirely becomes too much for the both of them, and Harry decides to finally fuck Draco properly, gripping his hips with both of his hands.

Draco turns his head, unconcerned about the odd angle, as Harry leans in and moans into Draco’s open mouth.

Beautiful

Draco Malfoy is beautiful. That is something everyone can agree on. His beauty is never altered by anyone's perception of him.

Draco Malfoy is quiet. He mostly keeps to himself these days. Tucked away in the corners of classrooms, eyes down, avoiding the whispers and the stares.

Now, Draco Malfoy is sat in the farthest corner of the library, his head down, eyes flicking back and forth between a book and his parchment. His eyebrows furrow in concentration and he worries his bottom lip between his teeth. His hair, now reaching just past his sharp cheekbones, falls in loose waves around his eyes, and he continues to battle it back behind his ears. He is beautiful.

And Harry is staring. Elbow resting on the table and his head resting in his hand, his full attention is on Draco and that stubborn strand of hair that keeps falling into his eyes.

He continues staring even when Draco's eyes flick up and immediately meet his. Harry only smiles, not the least bit concerned with how the staring may be perceived. Draco quickly looks back down at his parchment, a pink flush spreading across his cheeks and the tips of his ears, and Harry feels excited, a small smile still playing on his lips.

Harry is no longer looking at him when someone steals the seat in front of Draco. Now, all Harry can see is the back of someone's head, and disappointment washes over him. He huffs and begins to shuffle his work in front of him, his attention back to the original task.

Hermione looks up at the sound of Harry's exasperation. She watches as Harry's eyes look up to some point across the room before quickly looking back down at his papers. She turns, looking to see what Harry was so annoyed by. From where she sat, she saw the obstructed view of Draco. She turned back around, shaking her head.

"You're pathetic," she muttered. Harry looks up at her. "What are you talking about?" he asked, eyebrow raised in question. She raises a brow, a bored look resting on her face. "What?" Harry asked again. Hermione looked back down at her work in response.

‘GO, RAVENS!’ the crowd yelled as the Wroxton Ravens Chaser sped towards the Bristol Buzzards goalpost, dodged a bludger, feinted towards the right, swerved left — and scored.

Draco winced and pressed his fingers on the bridge of his nose. His head was throbbing. His champagne tasted flat. The hors d’oeuvres he’d ordered for his private box had never looked less appetizing. Ammar had scored a hat trick in under ten minutes and all because the owner of the Ravens, Harry bloody Potter, had signed up this extraordinary talent from Tunisia mere minutes before Draco had Apparated in Ben Arous with his lawyers and a contract.

‘Is— Is the Ravens mascot waving at you?’ Lady Branbury asked. Draco had invited some of the shareholders to watch the game; a decision he now regretted. He’d caught Sir Helmford’s whispers about the coach’s incompetence, and the unsaid recriminations towards the person who’d hired said coach: Draco.

Lady Branbury approached the edge of the box, head tilted to the sky. ‘Now he’s blowing kisses at you. Do you know him?’

‘No one knows who the Ravens mascot is,’ Theo drawled from the fawn-coloured sofa. He had no trouble consuming any of the champagne or the tiny salmon and roast duck canapes, but, then again, he wasn’t the owner of the team getting thrashed in the biggest match of the season. ‘It’s the deepest secret in the League. There’s a three-year-long wager in the bookies that will make someone very rich when the secret is out.’

Draco scoffed. He’d known from day one who the imbecile who took to the sky as his team’s mascot was — he’d seen him fly so often and had watched him so closely in the past. It was clear as day, and he’d no idea how no one else recognised him.

The Ravens mascot flew low, hovering outside Draco’s box. ‘Is that… dancing?’ Lady Branbury asked.

‘It isn’t.’ Theo laughed. ‘They want to show they’re fucking us. Pardon my language, Lady Branbury.’

Draco watched the black feathery git end his obscene display and float towards the Ravens fans. No, he thought, the big secret wasn’t the identity of their mascot. The big secret was what happened the night after the Ravens and Buzzards played against each other: the owner of the winning team got to top.

It made losing not so hard to bear, after all.

Harry finally met up with Ron and Hermione, running his hand through his already unruly hair and sighing as he approached. “Where have you been?” Ron asked, raising an eyebrow in question.
