What can give me CANCER?
What can give me CANCER?
Cancer is a deadly disease....not because it always kills, but because of the effect it has on the quality of life of the patient as well as his near and dear ones.
We all are aware that smoking, chewing tobacco, bingeing on alcohol may cause cancer. But are these the only villains in our story?
I have come across many patients in my clinical, practice who have not touched any of these and have still acquired the deadly disease....and every time I delivered them the diagnosis... I get the same question...How did I get the disease doctor, I have no addictions ?!
It’s time we started acknowledging or educating people about other factors, factors other than smoking, alcohol and tobacco consumption which have the possibility of causing this deadly disease.
Are you all aware that those Xrays and CT scans which we so commonly do are actually radiations to your body and have the capacity for causing cancer? Xrays, CT scans and PET scans use ionizing radiation which can damage DNA and cause cancer. ( MRI scans and ultrasound) do not use radiation. Although the risk is low, it is the responsibility of the patient as well as the doctor to perform these investigations only when absolutely necessary. Also the risk in children is more as compared to adults.

How do i Take Care of My Ears?
Ear is an organ of hearing and balance. Hence it is important that this sense organ should be should be taken care of as much, if not more, as other oarts of your body. Addressed below are a few pointers to maintain your ear health:
1. Keep your ears dry : Make it a habit of wiping your outer ear with a clean soft towel after bath or after a swim. (do not use earbuds/ q-tips) Preferably use custom fit ear plugs while swimming which will block the water from entering your ear canal. Moisture and humid conditions make the ear prone to infections (bacterial and fungal) which can affect your ear health 2. Do not use earbuds / q tips : They have been proven to cause injury / damage to the external ear and ear drum and should be altogether avoided. ( video of how q tips damage the ear) Let me add here that one of the most common reasons for blocked ear is ear wax pushed onto the eardrum because of the use of q tip in the process of cleaning the ear wax. 3. Avoid noisy environments / loud sounds: Exposure to loud sounds can lead to noise induced hearing loss.high noise levels in clubs / gyms/ concerts/ fireworks can cause damage to your hearing nerve and lead to hearing loss or tinnitus (ringing sound in the ear). Ear plugs are ideal if the working environment is noisy, e.g. loud sounds of machinery, people working at airports or near shooting ranges.

Do i Have Sinusitis? - How is Sinusitis Diagnosed? - Dr Amrapali Pawar
Often people come to the clinic with vague complaints like “ Doctor, I have a sinus problem!”,or sometimes “ doctor, I have sinus”!
Well, everybody has sinus!... In fact, not one or two but we have numerous sinuses around our nose. They are called ‘Paranasal Sinuses’ .  A sinus is a hollow cavity in the skull . These paranasal sinuses reduce the weight of the skull and are filled with air. They also help in warming and humidifying the air that we breathe.  We have Maxillary sinus, one on each side of the nose; a Frontal sinus on the forehead region; around 8 to 10 Ethmoid sinuses between our nose and the eyes and a sphenoid sinus at the back of our head. All of these are paired or bilateral I.e. on each side.

How the throat works?
The throat is the primary track for air, food and liquid to pass through before it reaches the lungs and stomach. It is a tube like structure whose purpose is to carry food to the esophagus and air to the windpipe and larynx.
The throat comprises of the pharynx, epiglottis, larynx, trachea and esophagus. As we swallow our food, it moves towards the throat (pharynx) and into the esophagus, a muscular tube that leads from the throat to the stomach. While the food is moving to the stomach, the trachea (windpipe), the epiglottis and larynx work simultaneously to ensure breathing and swallowing activities are coordinated. The food has to move to the esophagus without entering the trachea, to avoid choking.
The throat also plays a pivotal role in forming speech. It is the larynx, the voice box that has the vocal cords, which are associated with our speech.

How the ear works?
How the ear works?
The hearing process begins when sound waves meet with the outer ear.
As soon as the outer ear receives sound vibrations, it transmits the sound through the external auditory canal to reach the eardrum (the tympanic membrane).
Once the eardrum is hit, these vibrations move further along to the three bones in the middle ear called the ossicles where the vibrations are modulated. From the middle ear, the sound waves are then transmitted to the vestibulocochlear nerve (fluid filled cochlea) to reach the inner ear.
In the inner ear, the sound waves are converted into electrical impulses, which the auditory nerve sends to the temporal lobe of the brain. It is the brain that finally helps us recognize and register these electrical impulses as a sound. We as human beings relate to sounds ranging from frequencies between 20 Hz and 20 kHz.
Besides the primary function of hearing, the ear also has a function to maintain static and dynamic bodily balance, when stationary or moving.

SIGN OF LARYNGEAL CANCER?
DO YOU KNOW THAT A CHANGE IN YOUR VOICE CAN BE A SIGN OF LARYNGEAL CANCER?
Hoarse voice, if it persists for more than 3 weeks , certainly needs to be evaluated as it can be a sign of laryngeal cancer or cancer of your voice box.
But no need to panic! Just because your voice has changed its quality , it does not necessarily indicate that you have cancer. Other reasons why your voice may change or become hoarse are – laryngitis (inflammation of larynx), overuse or misuse of voice , acid reflux, allergies, trauma.
So how do you know what has actually caused that change in your voice?
For this you need to be properly evaluated by your ENT doctor who will infer from a proper and detailed history and examination, and if necessary , relevant investigations; your accurate diagnosis. He may need to do your laryngeal endoscopy to visualise and evaluate your voice box and surrounding structures. An examination of your neck to look for any enlarged lymph nodes, which may again be a sign of cancer is mandatory. If necessary, your ENT doctor will advise further investigations like a CT scan and / or biopsy. Although , most of the time , it is possible that your change of voice may be due to completely benign reasons which are stated above ; and if so, you will be prescribed some medications for your condition. If necessary, you will also be advised to undergo voice therapy for the same.
The important thing to remember here is that- if at all you are suffering from a change of voice, please be sure to visit your ENT surgeon and get your condition diagnosed as soon as possible to avoid further complications. Any disease diagnosed in the early stage has the highest chance of recovery.
