I was super bored in class the other day, and because I wasn't in the front row I couldn't start mindlessly scrolling through tumblr so I ended up writing 2000+ words of half life fanfiction. I'm not entirely sure how that happened but tbh I'm liking it so far

I thought I drew more Portal things but turns out I only drew 2 designs, sooo Have Dr. Kliener and Grigori as bonuses ig. So have Mel from Portal Stories: Mel and the unnamed subject from Aperture Tag, who I’m gonna call Gel cuz.. Aperture tag, orange n blue gels. I made new designs for them cuz I was planning to redraw something really old from my deviantart, if you wanna know. Here it is. Of course I still need to go over my designs for the bots but I’ve been procrastinating.
Edit: I did forget one, I drew 3 test subject designs

Round 1: Match 55
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From the Combine Overwiki,
Dr. Eli Vance is a physicist and researcher who worked and lived at the Black Mesa Research Facility with his wife Azian and infant daughter Alyx when the cataclysmic Black Mesa Incident occurred. After escaping from the site with nothing but Alyx, a family picture, and his wedding ring, Eli spent the next two decades working as a prominent member of the Resistance against the Combine alongside his daughter. Eli is an African-American man, seemingly in his late fifties or early sixties, with short gray hair, a beard, and a moustache. He wears a Flex-Foot Cheetah-type prosthetic leg that replaces his missing left leg beneath the knee, which he lost in a Bullsquid attack.
From the Combine Overwiki,
Father Grigori is the only known surviving occupant of Ravenholm during the events of Half-Life 2. He appears to be mentally unstable, but is generally friendly. In Half-Life 2, he helps Gordon Freeman survive his trip through Ravenholm and escorts him to the mines on the far side of the Zombie-infested town.

*STARES BACK INTENSLY*
Ok so it is a game series by Valve where you (mostly) play as a theoretical physicist named Gordon Freeman. He worked at a top-secret science facility called Black Mesa and they were experimenting on a crystal from a border world planet called Xen and ended up accidentally ripping a portal open to Xen (it was called the Resonance Cascade), and Gordon (And a security guard named Barney Calhoun and two other theoretical physicists named Colette Green and Gina Cross and a HECU Marine named Adrain Shephard) had to fight the aliens had to come through. Also everyone but Adrian also had to fight the HECU marines because they HECU are there to bascially go in and kill everyone and everything in Black Mesa if things go to shit. Anyways. Gordon fights everything and ends up going to Xen and kills the Nialanth which is the giant alien baby-looking thing which had every other alien under it's control, it was also the last on it's kind. So yeah Gordon kills it then the G-man shows up and is like "Hey Gordon. Join me or I'll let all the remaining aliens kill you" so Gordon joins him. And twenty years later Gordon wakes up on a train going to City 17, which is one of the last remaining urban centers after the Combine, a race of fascist aliens took over the world after finding earth through the Resonance Cascade and they took over the whole world. Anyways now everyone is kinda like. Under the Combine's rule. So anyways Barney finds Gordon and brings him to Dr. Kleiner (Dr. Kleiner is Gordon's mentor and science dad) and everyone is so happy to see Gordon! That's also when we first meet Alyx (she is my wife I love her) and Gordon gets his power armour back, and he has to go to Black Mesa east where Eli is (Eli is Alyx's dad and Gordon's old co-worker) and he goes to do that and Comine shoot at him. Oh yeah Gordon's old boss Dr. Breen is working with the Comine that's important. Anyways he gets to Black Mesa East and sees Eli again (Alyx is also there cuz she teleported first but Gordon didn't) and they hang out a bit (Eli's friend Judith Mossman is there too, she's important) before Black Mesa East gets attacked because SOMEONE ratted them out so everyone scatters and Gordon has to go to Ravenholm (We don't go the Ravenholm) which is filled with zombies and there's this preist guy named Father Grigori is there, he's chill, he gives Gordon a shotgun and they fight the zombies together before Ravenholm gets set on fire and Father Grigori runs into the flames because he won't leave his people. So Gordon is just kinda there now. And then he finds out Eli is at Nove Prospekt (The Combine's really big prison) so Gordon goes on a road trip to find him. He also finds out what Antlions are are also learns how to control them throught the pheremone pods the antlions have. So he gets to Nova Prospekt and tries to find Eli and fights some guards and antlions and shit but Eli isn't there! So he meets up with Alyx again and they go back to Kleiner's lab. They also found out Judith betrayed everyone because she hates Gordon for taking her job. Anyways. So it turns out an entire week has passed way to fast because of the teleporter mishap. And the uprising started! Yay! So yeah they decide to go to the Citadel. Barney joins them and they head to the Citadel, and Gordo gets in (Alyx got captured) Breen tried to get Gordon to betray his friends and but Gordon...didnt say anything, I am sure he is mute. Anyways Breen tried to contact the Combine and ends up dying, Gordon, Alyx and Eli escape, and the Citadel blows up then G-man shows up again and is just like "Just checking in <3"
Anyways that's just. 1 and 2. There are other episodes to Half Life 2 and also Half Life Alyx but my arms hurt

Ok ok so
Half Life 1: Gordon Freeman, a theoretical physicist who graduated from MIT has his first day at Black Mesa. He got in due to his closeness with another scientist, Dr. Issac Kleiner.
Anyways so Gordon is tasked with pushing the crystal they have recently gotten from a border world (read: a world that is between dimensions) called Xen into an anti-mass spectrometer. The experiment goes totally wrong, and portals from Xen begin opening up, allowing aliens to come through and swarm the facility.
Soon after, the HECU Marines (a special taskforce called for when the scientists REALLY fuck up), so on top of fighting the aliens, Gordon has to fight the military as well. He moves through Black Mesa, eventually getting to a scientist who send him through a portal to Xen so he can kill the Nilanth, which is an alien who has a seperate race of aliens called Vortigaunts enslaved and tbh isn't very lore important. Gordon kills the Nilanth, then G-man shows up and gives Gordon a job then puts him in stasis.
(Barney (security guard), Gina, and Colette (scientists) are also fighting through Black Mesa, and Adrian (soldier) is fighting the scientists and guards but Blue Shift (Barney), Opposing Force (Adrian) and Decay (Gina and Colette) are all dubiously canon, especially Opposing Force)
Half Life 1: After the portal to Xen is opened, the Combine (a warlike alien race that takes over worlds, enslave and kill the inhabitants, strip the planet of its resources, and moves on) are alerted to Earth's existence and in seven hours have taken over Earth. Dr. Wallace Breen, former administrator of Black Mesa, negotiates Earth's surrender with the Combine. Twenty years later, Gordon returns, arriving in City 17 which is where all his former co-workers are (that survived, that is)
He meets with Barney who is working as a Metrocop (metrocops are humans that choose to work for the Combine for extra rations and safety. It's hard to tell them apart from a Civil Protection officer which are - as far as I can tell - modified humans with most of the "humaness" stripped away)
ANYWAYS BACK ON TRACK Barney brings Gordon into a back room and tells Dr. Kleiner that Gordon's back. He then tells Gordon to go to Kleiner's lab, but as he is getting there he is caught and beaten up but Alyx saves him. She then leads him to Kleiner's lab and explains what happened while he was gone. In Kleiner's lab Gordon gets his HEV suit back, and Kleiner tries to teleport both Gordon and Alyx to Black Mesa East (no relation to the nuked Black Mesa). Alyx gets there, but Dr. Kleiner's pet headcrab Lamarr messes up the teleporter as Gordon is in it so he has to go on a river route.
After he goes through the river, he arrives at Black Mesa East and meets Eli Vance and also Judith Mossman (who hates him. She is very jealous of him) and they talk for a bit, Gordon gets a new weapon (the Gravity Gun, he can fling people and things around with it) and also plays with Alyx's robot D0g, then Black Mesa East gets raided so Gordon has to go to Ravenholm (We don't go to Ravenholm)
In Ravenholm Gordon is surrounded by headcrab zombies and has to kill the with giant saw blades fires with the gravity Gun, until the only actual person there (Father Grigori) gives him a shotgun. Father Grigory seems chill but he sacrifices himself right before Gordon leaves so. Yeah.
Gordon then goes on a roadtrip. Then he has to do parkour so he doesn't get killed by antlions. (Antlions don't like when you walk on the sand) Luckily a friendly Vortigaunt gives him a pheromone ball so the antlions like him. So he has to lead them out of where they were.
Gordon then goes to the very scary Combine jail called Nova Prospekt to try to save Eli. Turns out he's not there! Gordon meets with Alyx again, and they both find out that Judith was working with Dr. Breen the whole time. Judith then takes Eli to the Citadel (Where Breen is)
Alyx and Gordon teleport back to Kleiner's lab only to find out they have been stuck in a loop for a whole week, and Nova Prospekt blew up and everyone's going crazy (in a good way). Alyx stays with Kleiner and Gordon finds Barney and the two start beating people up. They get to the Citadel and Gordon gets inside. Gordon fights all the way to Dr. Breen's office, and goes inside (captured). Dr. Breen then basically says he wants Eli and Alyx gone and that makes Judith mad because she wanted Eli safe so she blows up Breen's communicator, and then frees the three. Gordon chases Breen to the top of the Citadel, Breen dies and everyone gets out and the Citadel blows up.
There is also Episode 2 and HL: Alyx but. I need a break
Holy fucking shit that is so much lore/pos

Personel History: Jacob "Eden" Grigori
Here's the back story I said I would write even though no one asked for this so here's a russian kid's journey to being hired by an intergalatic berucrat.
A young man born 12 years before the Seven Hour War in the urban center that would become City17. On the day of the Seven Hour War Jacob and his father were returning from a hunting in celebration for his birthday. The two of them encountered a Combine patrol and when his father fought back he was shot down but Jacob hid in the woods using back roads to get back into the city. He saw as the massive portal brought the massive reactor down into the center of the city. Despite only just turning 12 his survival instinct for some reason told him that the safest place would be whatever is being built around that reactor. As the framework was constructed Jacob hid inside the walls of what would be later dubbed as the Citadel. His supplies from the hunting trip came in handy particularly the cot, a few rations, and his double barrel shotgun and revolver.
So he lived in the Citadel in a hidden room that he dubbed the Garden of Eden fitted with his cot and furnishings that he had saved from the Combine’s incinerators including text books which substituted his education including a doctorate thesis by one G. Freeman. During his stay in the Citadel he learned many things from not only the books but also studying the Combine’s language and how the Combine’s dark energy works including making custom bullets for his weapons. Finally he was able to save a US army helmet which protected his head during scavenge missions and carved out a haven for himself by killing soldiers notching his gun’s handles for every one he killed. When he exited the Citadel in an appropriate Combine vehicle when he was 18.
Jacob made his way to the Rebel’s outpost in Ravenholm as one of the youngest members in the resistance. During this time he enjoyed a safe and quiet life after the past 6 years of fighting for his life though those 6 years did lead him to being appointed to the Resistances Recon division at 23. During the intervening years he met and was essentially adopted by the spiritual leader of the town Father Grigori. His adopted father had a profound impact on him not only helping him with his aim but also spiritually teaching the words of the Lord which Jacob did try to keep. He had only chosen the name Garden of Eden as a mere stand in for what he considered a paradise from pop culture. During his time in Recon Jacob took on the code name Eden due to the word’s significance for him which was heightened after his conversion. Though it his peaceful life and subterfuge missions wouldn’t last and Ravenholm was shelled by the combine when Jacob was 28.
Jacob and Grigori stayed behind as Ravenholm was deserted by rebels and flooded by zombies. During this time Grigori and Jacob tried to synthesize a cure if not at least a repellent to Headcrabs and their parasitic nature most of their experiments failed as even while the victims of Headcrabs are conscious their flesh is consumed and living without the crab is impossible.  Jacob had volunteered to try their repellent which worked as a sort of vaccine with it being made from the fluids in the headcrab’s beak. It worked much like the antlions bug bait without the ability to control them unfortunately it didn’t work for Grigori and neither of them are sure why. When Jacob turned 32 he parted ways with his Father and returned to the resistance, specifically Black Mesa East a few weeks before Gordon’s return. When the Combine invaded he ran with the other rebels to White Forest where he stayed until Gordon showed up again. He watched as the man he only knew from old stories from Dr. Vance and a dusty book in an abandoned section of the Citadel fought back an entire Combine death squad.
Later still together Gorden and Jacob destroyed the Combine’s synth labs which also held their headcrab farms with big mama generators. During the mission Jacob was shot through the lung by a combine soldier and accepted his fate as the reactor went critical. As the flash of white past Jacob found himself in what he believed to be a waiting room for the after life that was until the G-man appeared. He was given a job as his knowledge of dark energy and his abilities to survive in suicidal situations made him an unique opprotenity for the G-mans employers and so he sits in statsis until his services are required.

I love heist movies :D
Tumblr media
... and every heist movie has this episode. Form the team and explain everyone's strengths. And guess what? I liked everyone!
It's still hard for me to decide if Ivan is indeed a Bourne type person trained by the government or if this is all a delusion of his, like Dr Bell wants him to think. But while we don't have a definitive answer for that I have a new theory on Lark.
I believe the reason why Lark knows so much about the other patients and about the water is because he works for the people behind Ravenholm. But he's a rogue agent. He doesn't like their methods anymore and wants the patients to escape this hell.
The climax is getting closer. See y'all next week!

I'm not sure how much this would help, but you making the choice to share your works directly resulted in me making an ao3 account, which led to me writing and interacting with some really cool people who are now my dear friends, so i do want to thank you for being a really cool inspiration! Co-op Game Theory is also an absolute blast to keep up with and i hope you have been enjoying my essays cause i like writing them
You don't hafta publish this or anything i just know what its like to be in a slump and wanted to attempt to say a nice thing because you seem like you are in need of nice things, even from strangers :)
You know, I saw this right before I went to bed last night, and I legitimately had to screenshot this and send it to the Alpha-Husband because, like, it made me that giddy. Thank-you. I am glad that you’ve found friends and fun in writing, and I’m actually legit honored to be one of the reasons you went down this path. Writing is fun! Friends are fun! And you are a very nice person who deserves fun. ;;
As for Cooperative Game Theory, I am... actually really excited to know who is behind those long, long comments. You do not know how excited we are to get them. They usually get replied to last because the Alpha-Husband liked to think about how to answer (long comments generally garner long and excited responses from him), and I... don’t answer comments because I’ve been very socially drained lately, but I hope you know we do appreciate those essays. We literally run off to tell each other when Big Long Comment comes. <3
And, you know? It means a lot. Cooperative Game Theory is, like, Alpha-Husband's baby. It’s something he’s been planning even before we met, and it’s something that we lost our minds over last fall. Literally twenty-four hours straight and then some of brainstorming, to the tune of us “going to bed” and then running back to our laptops because we had another idea. There is an entire hidden page on his site of notes upon notes (some of them very out-of-date) where we just yelled at one another for thousands of words, and that’s not even getting started on the fact we sat on my couch, watching a playthrough of Half-Life 2, while he took meticulous notes and I screamed ideas at the side of his head.
I will be the first to admit that he’s the driving force behind 90% of it. Almost everything you read is what he’s written, with some touch-ups by me (and, a few select scenes that are more my wheelhouse). I’m very much an ideas person, because finding the brainpower to actually write has been... difficult since the loss of my mom (but, I’m working on it with this, so! Improvement!). I have dibs on the entirety of Ravenholm, though, since horror is my schtick, lol.
But, I do appreciate the kind words. A lot of hard, hard work has gone into this and it just makes me happy to hear folks’re enjoying it.
TL;DR: I’m sick and medicated and rambling and I just wrote an entire essay of babbling when a “thank-you, you are very sweet” would have sufficed. ;; <3

With one small donation a day, you can help me work to become god, so I can make it so the human sergeant was reused as the final boss for Blue Shift and Shephard gets to use his minigun in Opposing Force and uses it in the scrapped second half of the pit worm fight and references this now iconic scene in Return to Ravenholm, which now ends with him getting to the resistance base and  meeting Dr. Rosenberg there.

Highlights of Half Life 2 with @nerdneeniya
Constantly complimenting the game for being 50,000% better than HDtF
Hating on Breen right off the bat because I already know to hate this dude.
The sadness in all the NPCs is just heartbreaking honestly...
I love all the people. All of the resistance peeps.
Mostly Alyx.
And BARNEY aaaa I wish there was an option to hug himmmmm
Honestly though, Dr. Kleiner? Might be my favorite. He is sweet and loves Lamarr and is such a well-intentioned goof.
Lamarr got to go chase birds out in the wild... I wish her the best in life... Miss you already.
The fact that Gordon... Attacks with his crowbar... In a motion that just looks like he's punching.. what? Whack with it, man!!!
You ever just FEEL the moment a thing that could go wrong doesn't go wrong, but an angsty fic could emotionally destroy you in a what if scenario there? YEAH.
That happened first with "oh dang what if the teleporter didn't work with Alyx" and again when I realized the intercoms were announcing when CP people died and I thought "oh gosh what if the Resistance has Barney's number memorized in case he's found out and killed?"
...on a happier note, we've decided Gordon Freeman is the Tony Hawk of that world. Unless he's in an HEV suit, and even sometimes when he IS in it, strangers don't know it's him.
That easter egg Vortigaunt! Had so much dialogue!! We went through naming them Jeff, Geoff, Gallum, Hope, and finally settled on Nadia.
The boat levels were really funny because she kept running into walls and missing ramps.
The Mossman and Alyx arguing felt a bit unneeded? But understandable when put into the context of being a bit "claustrophobic".
"that's Ravenholm. We don't go there anymore." "We're going there aren't we?" *Knowing silence*
Dog. Just. Dog. Best doggo!
The sheer confusion of learning that the guy who looks like a mob boss that was spawned a couple times as a joke in HLVRAI... Is in fact Father Grigori, the guy I envisioned to be some white haired beanpole priest in robes... Just. I'm still reeling.
When leaving Barney "NO!! COME WITH!!!"
When separated from Alyx "NO!! COME WITH!!!"
When leaving Dog "NO!! COME WITH!!!"
every time: nope, no friends for you.
"I'm running outta bullets" "wait can you throw the sawblades with the gravity gun?" "OHOHOOOOO!!!"
*shooting poison headcrabs* "aww... It makes cute noises don't kill iiiit I love themmm" "I hate them, DIE ALREADY!" "They squeeeeeeek I love them."
All in all, a great game so far! I miss when unlabeled boxes had things in them, but it's all good.

Good Afternoon, Good Evening, and Goodnight
fandom: hlvrai/half life characters: gordon freeman, benry, dr. coomer, bubby, darnold, tommy coolatta, g-man, sunkist, joshua freeman, dr. wallace breen, barney calhoun, alyx vance, eli vance, judith mossman, dr. isaac kleiner, dr. arne magnusson, uriah ships: dr. coomer/bubby, tommy/darnold, gordon/benry, gordon/barney wordcount: 276,098 chapters: 62/62 other notes: knowledge of half life 2 is encouraged but not required! also, this all technically takes place in the same setting as “could i try again”, but that’s not required to understand this fic, it’s just background on dr. coomer/bubby.
Half Life: the game everyone exists because of. "Reality" is a complicated mess, and the Science Team can only really start to untangle it all after they finally leave the game. Where are they now, though, if not a video game world that constricts them to very particular roles they were meant for? Who are they now after the game, if not NPCs, or the player? What exactly does it mean, to not be real? They may be living post-game domestic bliss, but that doesn't take away from the things they went through. They've got a lot to unpack.
IMPORTANT: some links here will be embedded with the “chapter [x]” text while others will have a plain link right below it as well. the plain link will be mobile friendly when viewed in a browser! this fic has some custom html and i have to use pages on my blog to maintain it, but for some ungodly reason mobile doesn’t allow for pages, so it HAS to be viewed off-app, in a browser :/ there’ll be the normal embedded link for desktop version where the text isn’t massive, too.
lastly if you notice any formatting issues or broken/fucked up links or anything like that, PLEASE let me know and i’ll fix it!!! this was a beast to reformat and it’s hard to go thru and check like literally every single link. anyways please enjoy the fruits of my labor

Proof that Odessa Cubbage is one of the worst Half-Life characters and I hate him.
Look at Colonel Cubbage from Half-Life 2.

Now look at "Mike”.

Notice anything?
Cubbage isn’t thin, unlike the other people in New Little Odessa. The only other non-thin male character is Father Grigori, who could reasonably be larger than everyone else since almost everyone in Ravenholm is either dead or a zombie. Cubbage, however, owns a functioning settlement with several rebels, and considering the fact that (according to one of the writers) he told everyone that HE was the one who killed the Gunship instead of Gordon, it could be that Cubbage either steals peoples rations or simply lies about the amount they have and keeps more for himself.
This makes him the WORST Half-Life 2 character, with the exception of Dr. Breen and (possibly) G-Man.
