Doughnut Economies

In order to face the demands of the head-on 20th century, the economy must adjust. Fresh thought is the order of the day. So where are we starting?

Kate Raworth's Doughnut idea could get us out of our current predicament. Imagine a classic doughnut in the middle with a hole. It consists of two rings, one on the inside and one on the outside. The inside can be seen as the social foundation, while the outside reflects an ecological layer.  In the dough of our metaphor, between these two rings is what the author describes as a "safe home for the human being." Without overloading the world, all of our social needs can be addressed. Let us unpack the first concept: the social basis of Doughnut includes all that people need to live. This covers basics like clean water and food, but it is more than that. Not only do we want people to survive, but we also want them to thrive. It is more than just enough to eat a complete human life. More abstract social goods are also necessary, such as support networks, community feeling, political representation, and gender equality. What about the ecological outer layer? This is the ecological boundary to which we must respect whether we want the earth to thrive as well.

The systems on which we rely to make, sell, and dispose fashion are broken. Large quantities of NRC (non-renewable resources) are constantly extracted to produce the products we love, which are largely deposited or incinerated. In fact, they are almost completely linear. We have to change the fashion system through a circular module by eliminating the concept of waste. Changing this linear system requires a radical change. It means everyone working with unprecedented levels of engagement and innovation in the fashion industry.

To explain how the circular approach is different in the fashion system, let’s see an example of how Stella McCartney’s team is using Renewable materials as a core of their circular and sustainable shift. They believe that modern business has to benefit the economy, society, and the environment.  through the use of innovative materials, the promotion of restorative farming practices, and the design of products that are made to last. When considering materials using a circular economy lens, they are divided into two categories – technical and biological materials.

Technical Materials

Materials from non-renewable commodities are scientific materials. They are made in-organic or synthetic materials – including nylon , polyester, plastics and metals – that can be processed optimally and used regularly without any lack of consistency when existing in an ongoing loop.

Biological Materials 

Materials extracted from natural sources are biological materials. These are natural materials that can safely decompose into the natural world, without adversely influencing the soil, water and food for bacteria and microbiological life when developed for circulatory economy.

In my opinion as a future designer, we need to create a truly circular economy, but the world must overcome the following five barriers:  

 Customers are not ready for second-hand products:  

The fact that to date the vast majority of customers are not interested in remanufactured fashion garments., we still need to find the hook that will make the customer want to pay for circular products. some of the current customers who would buy remanufactured products are the people who are environmentally conscious or people who cannot afford to buy new ones.  

The difficulty in the collection and storage of used garments:  

Collecting used garments is a massive challenge. This is closely related to the ability to predict how much garments will be discarded each year and capacity planning, even with assuming that we did a great job of collecting discarded garments …. what should be doing with this next?  

The design and technological challenges of the repurposing second-hand products:  

Remanufacturing requires great design and technological expertise. Designing for singularity different from designing for the linear economy. We still going to see so many great technology solutions that will enable a sustainable circular economy.  

Higher financial business risk than any garments sold in a linear business module:   

The long-term vision of circular business models should have. One of the fundamental challenges for fashion shift into the circular economy the fact that any circular business module would take longer to prove financially viable since they based their success on the second or third sales.

The doughnut economic model aims to create a circular economy that we can all thrive in, rather than constant never-ending growth. 

Pernah mendengar Istilah “Doughnut Economic Model”?, suatu hari senior saya di kantor membahas tentang  “Doughnut Economic Model” yang dicetuskan oleh  Kate Raworth pada tahun 2012. Kate merupakan seorang Senior Associate di Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership. Pada konsep  Doughnut Economic, Kate mempertimbangkan beberapa aspek dalam perekonomian antara lain peradaban manusia dan aspek lingkungan. Konsep Ekonomi ini tentu sangat berbeda dengan konsep Ekonomi Klasik yang terfokus pada pertumbuhan ekonomi saja. Konsep  Doughnut Economic mempertimbangkan sustaiability peradaban manusia dan kualitas lingkungan yang suatu saat akan menurun seiring terjadinya kegiatan perekonomian. Banyak permasalahan yang akan timbul jika beberapa aspek dalam kehidupan yang sangat erat dengan aktifitas ekonomi tidak diperhatikan. Permaslahan tersebut antara lain degradasi lingkungan dan krisis sosial. Degradasi lingkungan yang dimaksud antara lain berkurangnya sumber daya alam, sumber air, udara yang bersih, serta penyempitan lahan serta rusaknya ekosistem lingkungan lainnya. Sedangkan permasalahn krisis sosial antara lain lebih mengarah pada berkembangnya kekerasan dan fragmentasi sosial, pelanggaran dan diskriminasi hak-hak dasar dari warga masyarakat. Konsep  Doughnut Economic   tidak mengenal istilah ‘membuang sisa produksi’. Setiap proses produksi, di akhir siklusnya akan digunakan menjadi materi dasar (raw material) untuk proses produksi selanjutnya.
