Mountains May Depart (2015) & Smog Journeys (2015)
Tumblr media
Movies #1,126 & 1,127 • Part of My JIA ZHANGKE Director Focus
This one is pretty great until the final act, which is baffling and more than a bit goofy. The aesthetic vision of 2025 from the perspective of 2015 aside, this segment features some of the most head-scratching dialogue we’ve ever seen in a Jia Zhangke film (a line like “it’s as if Google Translate is your real son” is overtly bad, while something like “now that I can legally own guns, I have nothing to shoot at” is subtly bad).
Also, while I generally appreciate how flippant J.Z. is with the narrative, following and ditching characters on a whim, here it's a detriment. The character of Liangzi is essentially an afterthought at every turn, existing solely as a counterpoint to a life that Zhao Tao might have had, and even as that it feels slight and unnecessary (like he couldn't possibly tell a story without somebody existing on the lower rung).
SCORE: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Smog Journeys is a wordless 7-minute short financed by Greenpeace featuring much of the same cast as Mountains May Depart. Pollution is bad, y'all!

I wanna ask your initial impression about the Wind Blows From Longxi because I'm planning to watch it when there's an English version. I like spy historical drama theme and this looks like following that kind of theme. And it's a Chen Kun starrer who is known as a good C-Drama actor. Is it worth watching? And please share your favorite C-Drama lately to binge-watch comes weekend. Thanks so much!
The Wind Blows from Longxi - I only watched 2 episodes but it failed to catch my interest. To me, the writing lacked direction and the production quality seemed quite average. Unfortunately I wasn't super impressed by the acting either, and surprisingly, I found Dong Zijian (a guest star) to be the most compelling actor in the first two episodes. I've heard that at least the plot improves, but I've had bad experiences with other plots by the source novel's author so I probably won't continue watching. But if you were planning to watch it, you should check it out and decide for yourself!
Ancient Detective - I just finished the 1st episode and I'm definitely going to continue. It's a cross between wuxia and mystery, and the opening episode is really well done. I'll keep you guys updated on this one.
Dream House - I've caught up on the 6 episodes that aired and might continue. Some of the scenes make my blood pressure rise, and it's not the type of drama I usually watch (it's about interior design and home renovation lol), but I honestly find it pretty interesting?
My Sassy Princess - I watched 4 episodes, and I'm not sure if I'll continue. It's a silly but fun drama. I thought the first episode was strong, but after watching a few more episodes I think it might just be a little too silly for my tastes. I also think I would enjoy it more if I was more in love with the lead actor.

Chris: A Writer’s Odyssey is a Chinese fantasy film that was interesting, excellent CGI, plot elements and some visuals similar to the Elden Ring game, Watch: Rent.
Richie: The fantasy parts of the film looked stunning, but the dual storylines kind of slowed down the movie, Watch: Rent.
