Women's Not So Distant History

This #WomensHistoryMonth, let's not forget how many of our rights were only won in recent decades, and weren’t acquired by asking nicely and waiting. We need to fight for our rights. Here's are a few examples:

📍 Before 1974's Fair Credit Opportunity Act made it illegal for financial institutions to discriminate against applicants' gender, banks could refuse women a credit card. Women won the right to open a bank account in the 1960s, but many banks still refused without a husband’s signature. This allowed men to continue to have control over women’s bank accounts. Unmarried women were often refused service by financial institutions entirely.

📍 Before 1977, sexual harassment was not considered a legal offense. That changed when a woman brought her boss to court after she refused his sexual advances and was fired. The court stated that her termination violated the 1974 Civil Rights Act, which made employment discrimination illegal.⚖️

📍 In 1969, California became the first state to pass legislation to allow no-fault divorce. Before then, divorce could only be obtained if a woman could prove that her husband had committed serious faults such as adultery. 💍By 1977, nine states had adopted no-fault divorce laws, and by late 1983, every state had but two. The last, New York, adopted a law in 2010.

📍In 1967, Kathrine Switzer, entered the Boston Marathon under the name "K.V. Switzer." At the time, the Amateur Athletics Union didn't allow women. Once discovered, staff tried to remove Switzer from the race, but she finished. AAU did not formally accept women until fall 1971.

📍 In 1972, Lillian Garland, a receptionist at a California bank, went on unpaid leave to have a baby and when she returned, her position was filled. Her lawsuit led to 1978's Pregnancy Discrimination Act, which found that discriminating against pregnant people is unlawful

📍 It wasn’t until 2016 that gay marriage was legal in all 50 states. Previously, laws varied by state, and while many states allowed for civil unions for same-sex couples, it created a separate but equal standard. In 2008, California was the first state to achieve marriage equality, only to reverse that right following a ballot initiative later that year. 

📍In 2018, Utah and Idaho were the last two states that lacked clear legislation protecting chest or breast feeding parents from obscenity laws. At the time, an Idaho congressman complained women would, "whip it out and do it anywhere,"

📍 In 1973, the Supreme Court affirmed the right to safe legal abortion in Roe v. Wade. At the time of the decision, nearly all states outlawed abortion with few exceptions. In 1965, illegal abortions made up one-sixth of all pregnancy- and childbirth-related deaths. Unfortunately after years of abortion restrictions and bans, the Supreme Court overturned Roe in 2022. Since then, 14 states have fully banned care, and another 7 severely restrict it – leaving most of the south and midwest without access. 

📍 Before 1973, women were not able to serve on a jury in all 50 states. However, this varied by state: Utah was the first state to allow women to serve jury duty in 1898. Though, by 1927, only 19 states allowed women to serve jury duty. The Civil Rights Act of 1957 gave women the right to serve on federal juries, though it wasn't until 1973 that all 50 states passed similar legislation

📍 Before 1988, women were unable to get a business loan on their own. The Women's Business Ownership Act of 1988 allowed women to get loans without a male co-signer and removed other barriers to women in business. The number of women-owned businesses increased by 31 times in the last four decades.

📍 Before 1965, married women had no right to birth control. In Griswold v. Connecticut (1965), the Supreme Court ruled that banning the use of contraceptives violated the right to marital privacy.

📍 Before 1967, interracial couples didn’t have the right to marry. In Loving v. Virginia, the Supreme Court found that anti-miscegenation laws were unconstitutional. In 2000, Alabama was the last State to remove its anti-miscegenation laws from the books.

📍 Before 1972, unmarried women didn’t have the right to birth control. While married couples gained the right in 1967, it wasn’t until Eisenstadt v. Baird seven years later, that the Supreme Court affirmed the right to contraception for unmarried people.

📍 In 1974, the last “Ugly Laws” were repealed in Chicago. “Ugly Laws” allowed the police to arrest and jail people with visible disabilities for being seen in public. People charged with ugly laws were either charged a fine or held in jail. ‘Ugly Laws’ were a part of the late 19th century Victorian Era poor laws. 

📍 In 1976, Hawaii was the last state to lift requirements that a woman take her husband’s last name.  If a woman didn’t take her husband’s last name, employers could refuse to issue her payroll and she could be barred from voting. 

📍 It wasn’t until 1993 that marital assault became a crime in all 50 states. Historically, intercourse within marriage was regarded as a “right” of spouses. Before 1974, in all fifty U.S. states, men had legal immunity for assaults their wives. Oklahoma and North Carolina were the last to change the law in 1993.

📍  In 1990, the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) – most comprehensive disability rights legislation in U.S. history – was passed. The ADA protected disabled people from employment discrimination. Previously, an employer could refuse to hire someone just because of their disability.

📍 Before 1993, women weren’t allowed to wear pants on the Senate floor. That changed when Sen. Moseley Braun (D-IL), & Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) wore trousers - shocking the male-dominated Senate. Their fashion statement ultimately led to the dress code being clarified to allow women to wear pants. 

📍 Emergency contraception (Plan B) wasn't approved by the FDA until 1998. While many can get emergency contraception at their local drugstore, back then it required a prescription. In 2013, the FDA removed age limits & allowed retailers to stock it directly on the shelf (although many don’t).

📍  In Lawrence v. Texas (2003), the Supreme Court ruled that anti-cohabitation laws were unconstitutional. Sometimes referred to as the ‘'Living in Sin' statute, anti-cohabitation laws criminalize living with a partner if the couple is unmarried. Today, Mississippi still has laws on its books against cohabitation.

I did the last thing I wanted to do in this situation. I called and spoke to my parents about what’s going on. Which you know is a super duper fun thing to do.

Niether of them could help, which I figured before even reaching out. I’m filing the response to the lawsuit tomorrow. Well, I hope I am, I’m not sure how much it costs, so that may be a Friday after I get paid but before work kind of deal.

As soon as I get Paid Friday I am also going to call and offer what I can and try and set up a payment plan with the stipulation they drop the court case, hopefully that works.

idk man i know times are hard but i can't help but feel that watcher putting all their eggs in the basket that is their own streaming service is a bad call. like sure i totally get wanting a platform where you have full control both creatively and financially but i feel they might be misjudging how much loyalty non-hardcore fans might have for what they're creating. in every internet fandom there's a subsection of people willing to pay with actual money to support the creators they enjoy, and that's what services like patreon are for. but to expect that casual viewers will sign up and pay a monthly fee to get access to just watcher content when a large portion of them were likely just watching the content because it was free and accessible on youtube assumes that someone who isn't a diehard fan won't just go "oh well" and find something else on youtube that IS still free? that seems like a miscalculation to me. the massive fanbases online content creators have may literally be only possible because the content is available to anyone-- it seems foolish to assume that every single one of those fans is going to stick around once you try to upsell them.

i hope this new venture goes well for the watcher crew. I really do. but i also know that a lot of brands and startups that bank on the loyalty they earned when their product was free or low cost and expect that to sustain them while they try to do something that historically has not gone well for the vast majority of businesses. at best, they'll have halved their fanbase by alienating those who can't or don't want to pay and made it much more difficult for remaining fans to create fandom products like memes or gifs that promote their shows on social media. at worst, they'll discover in the near future the independent streaming service model is unsustainable with only the fans they have left and by that point they'll have already deleted themselves from youtube and made it impossible to come back to the level of success they had before. any attempt to return to youtube will be an admission of a critical miscalculation and i doubt many remaining fans will tolerate the back and forth. they'll have crippled their credibility, relevancy, and fanbase loyalty over a very short period of time-- and i don't know if it would even be possible to come back and still be beloved after all that.

worst of all-- if the watcher streaming service crashes and burns after they've already removed all their content from youtube, all the watcher shows are essentially going to become lost media, only accessible via reuploaders willing to risk a copy strike or if you know someone who has a copy downloaded. given how genuinely good the watcher content is in the sea of lackluster youtube mush, that really seems like a damn shame.

i hope the watcher team sees how everyone is responding and decides to course correct before it's too late and get away with only the hit to their reputation that they've already taken by announcing this, instead of pushing forward on a path that might lose them everything instead. nothing i've said here is with any hate intended toward anyone involved or those who are excited about the new service, but this just seems like a really ill-advised decision to me.

You know what would be a hysterical fic premise?

Someone sees that Phoenix's office is labelled the "Wright Anything Agency" and decides to put that to the test to see if "Anything" really does mean anything.

A man comes into the office telling them his car is busted and he needs to get it fixed. The WAA, sticking to their name, decide to fix his car, despite knowing nothing about cars (most of them can't even drive one).

The next day, a lady comes in asking them to bake her a cake for her son's fourth birthday. They oblige, despite never having baked anything in their lives.

The next day, an older man looking to retire asks for financial advice and how much to invest for his children's inheritance and how much he can blow on a cruise.

The next day, a woman comes in looking for a trendy haircut for a first date she's going on.

The WAA gets a reputation for sticking by the "Anything" in their name, and giving any and every task some good old gusto, even if they really suck at what they do.

Then, through some kind of evidence, Phoenix discovers that the people who come in asking for various services, are all the same person in different disguises, and they were just dicking around to see if the WAA really could keep their promise.

The next day the man comes in asking for a caramel frappuccino with whip and someone to groom his dog. The WAA complies.

The city of Hayek North Dakota does not exist. 

In august of 1909, IRS headquarters in washington D.C. was damaged by fire. No employees were hurt, but important financial archives suffered significant damage. Three years later, construction began on The IRS Archival Warehouse 1 in the city of Hayek North Dakota. As of writing, IRSAW1 spans more than 1.4 Million square feet, with the surrounding town spanning more than 28 square miles. 

Declassification is pending, but modern scholars believe that early experiments into “financial clairvoyance” were conducted at IRSAW1. With the clarity of hindsight, the facility was almost perfectly situated for hypnofinantial experimentation. Not only was the facility one of the first in the US to make use of hypnophone technology for accelerated learning, but the remote location and high security created an atmosphere of monastic isolation and boredom. If this weren’t enough, the nearby illicit pharmaceutical hotspot of White Rapids provided employees with extensive access to psychoactives. Contact with the sub-finantial background grid was all but inevitable. 

Preliminary experiments were conducted in utility closets modified with soundproofing, usually with a large comfortable chair placed at the center. While this method was a serviceable approximation of modern sensory deprivation protocol, researchers quickly noticed a strange pattern: some closets provided significantly more accurate results. 

At first, this was thought to be the result of differences in soundproofing, as the closets themselves were uniform concrete squares. Once soundproofing protocol was standardized, researchers realized that results improved dramatically the closer the subject was to the building’s lobby. The architecture itself was a factor.

It was at this point that the building’s architect was arrested, briefed, and brought onboard as a member of senior research staff. Fredrick Takács, later described by agents as a “quivering little Hungarian” was an urban planner and architect known for his signature gold-and-concrete “deco-haus” style. His input would prove invaluable. Takács’s work would form the bedrock of the field now known as Hypnoarchitecture. 

An incredible breakthrough. In december of 1970, researchers discovered that the unique gold alloy plating favored by Takács acted as a relay for delta-wave radiation. With this knowledge, researchers were able to increase the breadth, accuracy, and stability of hypnofinantial precognition to a level previously thought impossible. In may of 1970, construction began on extensive modifications to IRSAW1.

Hayek North Dakota does not have citizens. Its homes are unfurnished concrete, and were never occupied. The entire “town” of Hayek North Dakota was, in reality, a colossal sub-finantial delta-band antenna built around the former site of IRSAW1. The perimeter of the area now known as the Dakota Exclusion Zone is patrolled 24/7 by the National Guard. Current estimates say that spending even 48 hours inside the EZ would result in lethal psychoeconomic damage.

Cyno doesn't miss any Nilou's spectacle. He always paid the ticket so he support financially the theatre (Nilou or Dehya give him free tickets tho)

At first, Nilou was a bit wary of Cyno, but after the Archon Quest, she understands him more and enjoy to discover new thing about him ! At the point sometime she thinks he is kind of cute

In one of their hang-out date, Cyno starting to ramble about his special interest aka TCG... then he suddenly stopped, a bit embarassed "huh... maybe it doesn't interest you- we can talk about something else-" (usually he doesn't mind but he is concious abt what he say now when he is alone with nilou). But Nilou was listening to him, carefully, with a genuine and warm smile "please keep going ! I love seeing you being happy"

Before some repetition, Nilou would start to become nervous. Cyno would rassure her, by telling something like "Believe in you. You know you are capable, it is not the first time. Show us how much you love dancing. You can do it" (I JUST LOVE THEM SUPPORTING EACH OTHER !!!)

No one would expected the general mahamatra and the famous dancer dating. Except their close friend who witnessing a slow-burn love. When they finally make out, everyone is like "omg finally"

they r two adults but still damm embarassed to hold hand in public.

Cyno's love language is gift and act of service, Nilou's love language is word of affirmation and quality time (still unsure about this HC tho !)

Hello! can I ask for a general reading of BTS in 2025 like what will actually happen when they come after their military service? I do not think they'll be active as a group right after they come back. I would love to see your opinion.

General reading for BTS 2025- (much information came through but I shared what I felt comfortable sharing, if spirits allow me I will add more points later)

BTS when they will return after Military service will be unstoppable and not afraid to prove their points. They will be widening their perspectives with a pioneering spirit and maybe even exploring the genres of music that have been untouched by other K-pop groups or by other artists altogether. I am seeing a record room with Suga, Jhope, and RM specifically. They are going to take risks without any fear. As a group, they will be together but we might be getting more solo projects by the members too, or even a solo world tour (Jimin or JK) with other members as their guests. This will be the start of something new with them looking for their real truth like discovering their deep hidden talents and ideas. The company will not be able to control them anymore when it comes to their creative projects.

Their work and personal life will be more balanced than before and they will be in charge of their own schedules. I am getting something about them getting good rewards from their past deeds? Like they did something for someone behind the scenes and they will be rewarded/praised for it internationally?? They will have many options and choices to choose from but they must be careful while making that decision.

BTS will be on the financial roll, making money and fortune from everything and everyone. Many projects are waiting for them to return from the services. Yes, they will be breaking free from something or someone who has been controlling them for a long period. I am also seeing them expressing their views on some controversial topics without hesitation.

If they will continue working as a group- They will but their main focus will be on their own solo projects and making their own directions. They will be more focused inwards to make their decisions.
