TAZ Bingo time!!! From @taznovembercelebration Prompt: Joking or Serious  _________________________
Kravitz had lived with Taako for three years. He had been in lust with Taako for two years and three hundred and sixty five days. He had been in love with Taako for one year and forty seven days.
Taako, thankfully, didn’t seem to have noticed.
The lust part was easy to explain. Kravitz isn’t dead, he has eyes. The love bit was more of a surprise. It crept up on him until, deep in the throes of music practice, Taako dancing along wildly inappropriately for Britten’s First Suite for Cello, he thought ‘I love this idiot.’ After that, it was obvious.
Kravitz and Barry’s “I’m In Love With a Tacco Twin and All I Got Was This Lousy Whatsapp Chat” provided some comfort. It turns out there was, in fact, a gif for most situations. At least now if he screamed into the void when Taako made him eggy bread because he knew he missed home, or walked around the flat in nothing but a towel, the void yelled back about how it loved Lup.
Tonight, Taako had decided to 'borrow' one of Kravitz's t-shirts and was wearing a particularly tiny pair of shorts. The chat was busy. Barry was suffering a similar fate apparently. It was getting harder to reply though, Taako seemed intent on taking over the entire sofa whether Kravitz was on it or not. Usually Taako would kick his feet into Kravitz's lap, or even snuggle up beside him… but now the man was lying across his lap and Kravitz was panicking. Surely he couldn't see the screen from there?
His phone vibrated on the arm of the sofa, the name of the chat appearing on the lock screen. Kravitz angled it away and tried to remember exactly how to breathe. It was fine, that was only visible for a split second, Taako couldn’t have read it in that time, he definitely didn't see.
Taako moved fast. “You have to tell me right now, is this serious?” He demanded, grabbing Kravitz’s phone.
Every ounce of moisture left Kravitz’s mouth. Was there an opposite to flash flooding? Flash drying. Why did they not see this coming? Barry had so many PhDs, Kravitz was generally pretty smart… He could just have set his messages not to preview, he could have stopped messaging Barry and focused on the hot boy in his lap wearing his shirt, he could have named the chat literally anything else.
“Krav? Kraverino? Kravatappi? You have to do words now, my guy.” Taako was looking up at him, barely containing a grin.
"It's… I." Kravitz said with grace and decorum. Great start. Nailed it. Master of love confessions! At least Taako hadn’t run away and locked himself in his room.
Taako snorted. "Okay Stud, that one's on Taako. You have to do words relating to the question." Taako raised his eyebrows and waited.
"It's not a joke." There, an answer without any direct admission. That didn't actually count as telling him!
"You're in love with Lup????" Taako gasped, horrified.
"No, I'm in love with you, you idiot." Kravitz rolled his eyes and shoved Taako's shoulder, grinning at how ridiculous the accusation was. Then the realisation of what he’d just said hit. That fact was supposed to go to his grave. That was not supposed to be actual words he said at Taako. At least not without flowers and macarons, maybe some sky writing? Okay, back on task, he could fix this. He could make this okay. "Like, in a… a friends way?" He added, convincing no one.
"Oh, okay, a friends way, so you wouldn't be interested in, say, smooching this beautiful face?" Taako asked, wiggling his eyebrows.
"No?" Kravitz said, staring very intently at Taako’s lips. Fuck. He buried his head in his hands. If Taako couldn't see him then this couldn't be embarrassing. That was science. Immutable fact.
"Oh, okay, so you also wouldn't be interested in a WhatsApp chat I may or may not have named "I'm in Love with my Oblivious Roommate and Therefore I Live in Hell"?" Taako asked, mildly.
"I might, maybe, be interested in that." Kravitz said hopefully, peeking past his fingers to be sure Taako wasn't joking. He winked at Kravitz. Smug bastard.
"Interested in that in a friends way?" Taako asked. Kravitz was going to expire. Taako was never going to let him forget this.
"Could we forget this happened and I'll surprise you with flowers tomorrow?" It was worth a shot. Taako liked flowers!
"Nope" Taako popped the p viciously. "You can still buy me flowers though." He added. Kravitz pretended to roll his eyes. "Now, about that smooching, handsome?"
"Hold on, just got message Barry first." Kravitz grabbed his phone and just about managed to send 'torture=flirting' before a throw pillow thudded into the side of his head. “Right, where were we?”

im from quebec & if ur curious its pretty similar here, we just have different names for things haha. like here you do 5 years of high school, and each 'grade' is called 'secondary' & they start from 1. so "grade 7" in ontario = "secondary 1" in quebec. then you can go to college (which is called cégèp - people use these words interchangeably), which is usually a 2-3 year diploma program. you can then do a usually 3 year university program to get a bachelor's degree, and so on (master's, phd)
so wait, you have to do cégèp after high school but before university? i've heard of cégèp before (seen it on a lot of university admission requirements pages) but i wasn't sure if that was the quebec equiv of high school or if quebec has a system like the a-levels/"college" in the uk where they have to do their a-levels after secondary school in order to move on to doing a bachelor's degree. is it like that, or is cégèp like college in ontario where you can attend college or uni direct from high school depending on the "level" of classes you took?

The Generative Joys of Bookbinding
by Jennifer Savaran Kelly
Tumblr media
I was on the roof of my Brooklyn apartment building, in the dark, beating boiled daffodils with a rolling pin, when I had to admit that my path might be a creative, not an academic, one.
I’d been applying to doctoral programs in English lit so I could spend my life reading and writing about great novels. The truth was, I longed to write one of my own, but the idea seemed out of reach. I’d written many things in my life—countless journal entries, long letters to friends, even a short story or two that I stuffed away in a drawer—but I never saw myself as a writer. I was a book lover. A reader, to be sure, but also a true lover of the book as a physical object.
When I first lived on my own, I got hold of a papermaking kit and turned my small kitchen into a studio for boiling and blending flowers and soaking old paper to make new, richly textured sheets. It was exhilarating, but how could I forge a creative path out of crude handmade paper, not to mention a lack of belief in my own writing? A PhD in English looked like the best direction. Fortunately, most of the admissions committees and I arrived at the same conclusion: It was a poor fit.
Some of my earliest memories come from elementary school, listening to my fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Abresch, read aloud to the class. As I’d lose myself in the story of the day, I’d also be transported by the sounds of the book itself—the crinkling of the library cover, the whisper of pages turning. It intensified the magic, filling my small self with awe about the mysterious mechanics that held the leaves together. Which seemed somehow bound up with the magic of how the words had come to the writer.

PERSPECTIVE Q FOR U if you have the time!! Ive always dreamed of going back to school but my performance in undergrad was so unbalanced (straight A's for 3 semesters, then a withdrawal, then more A's then failing then incomplete etc.) And while my professors were incredible (and even asked me to do join a phd in archiving WHICH I SHOULD HAVE DONE!!!!!) and i remember almost everything we read and learned i didnt have a lot of direction and was im afraid a p mediocre student in the end. Since then i've been in government in DC and its been fantastic getting some impactful policy experience and the like but at this point its been almost half a decade out of school and i dont even know how to begin!! The trump "administration" was such a bonkers time to be a civil servant lol but DID help clarify the things i want now and the goals i want to achieve (crazy stuff like "feed hungry ppl," and "don't fuck up the earth too badly") almost definitely mean i have to go back for something. Idk do you have any colleagues/personal experience in making these kinds of academic pivots? I dont have any huge pedigree either im a state school scholarship girlie and the informational interviews ive done with dc area nonprofits and things have left me....less than impressed (lots of ivy leagues, lots of uhh baseline assumptions). Ok sorry this got long and reminiscent of reddit i'd love to hear your thoughts!
As ever, my advice would start with: is it financially feasible, do you know what degree you want (i.e. public policy, politics, economics, global affairs, is it something related to your present work or a total 180) and what school you want to go to, are you in the position to leave your current job, etc.?
Since you've been in the workforce for a while, that's practical experience that would help, and be easy to demonstrate for why you need the degree to enhance your career. If they do have questions about your uneven undergraduate transcript, hopefully you could get in contact with some old professors who could vouch for you and confirm that they invited you to the PhD program. Then again, graduate schools tend to be fairly forgiving as long as you can make a good case for why you want to join their program and adequately explain your previous academic career. I work at a good/highly-ranked private school, and our minimum GPA for admission to a graduate program is only 2.5. So there is probably more leeway than you think, if you're worried about your undergrad grades being an issue, and it's not like you have to be 4.0 in everything. Practical experience and a solid track record in a relevant field will also be helpful in demonstrating that you've done more since that time.
Likewise, and as ever: what is the financial situation? Are you in a position to leave your job, if that was to be necessary, and what kind of financial aid package can they give you? Is it mostly grants or mostly loans? Do you have, say, a partner who can continue to work and support you? Does the graduate program offer tuition support and/or a living stipend? As I've said before, they really should be paying YOU to do an advanced degree, rather than anything out of your own pocket. Is it possible to go half-time or full-time, and do you know how you want to apply it to your career when you're finished? Is there maybe an online program where you could take classes in the evening and/or in between work, or do you want the full campus experience? Do you perhaps just want a professional certificate or other enhancement to your qualifications, without having to spend the time and money on a full graduate degree?
Anyway, I obviously do support you if this is something you decide to pursue, and I think it's plenty doable. You'll have to do some logistics planning on your end and clarify what you want and where you want to go and what they'll give you in terms of money, but it's definitely something that can be achieved!

Long post ahead.
Introduction. Helloooo sa kokonting nakakabasa nito minsan haha so ayun last 20 days before submission ng thesis manuscript, and 32 days before final defense, I think effective talaga magsulat ng thesis pag malapit na yung deadline lol and maraming maraming data naman na raw ako so need na lang talaga icompile and all hahaha excited na rin ako for Sept 2022 graduation and family trip haha and since effective vent-out place ko tong Tumblr (since mahirap sundan kung ittweet lahat tsaka magulo haha), ipurge ko muna tong recent whirlwind of thoughts dito
Graduation Anxiety. So ayun graduation season, AND last two months na ng stipend ko! And I think psychologically threatened ako with the thought na patapos na current scholarship kasi graduation naaaa kahit objectively, I am still ~10 months away from zero finances assuming walang inflow, and I know need na ulit ng next scholarship na aapplyan this July and August, kasabay ng admission for PhD, pero di ko mapigilan mag-isip na gustong gusto ko na magwork, parang nakabase ang worth ko sa WORK talaga with SALARY huhu I find myself scrolling lagi sa linkedin, jobstreet, etc. etc. for possible part-time jobs na pwedeng online/remote, na based sa PH (kase Japanese skills ko di pa strong huhu so mahirap if dito ako maghahanap agad) and thinking na 30 y/o na ako pag PhD graduation na, andyan lagi yung worries na parang unemployable na ako (in the industry) at that age kase puro aral ako huhu
Mix-up. Scrolling sa mga job sites, natrigger ako since last week na parang andami kong gustong gawin huhu or kase parang unconsciously, iniisip ko na dapat i-fit ko yung credentials at skillset ko sa kung anong nakikita kong available postings, WHICH is hindi dapat! Kasi bat ako nasstress na hindi ako marunong magcode at programming (weakness ever since and traumatic talaga since undergrad tong programming ugh), e nakatingin kase ako sa DAMI ng IT and comsci jobs, na in reality hindi naman talaga para sakin, ty sa kapatid ko sa pagtulong marealize neto ahahaha kasi same thought naman if puro med-related or media-related or etc etc na hindi ko naman talaga field. Or baka kase sa dami ng IT job postings tas nacocompare ko sweldo nila na matataas dito sa Japan, pero anyways ayun, Conclusion is, know where to look talaga, and may job portals naman dito for spefically research/academe job postings (and pwede English language yey!) tsaka yung specific companies talaga na direct hiring websites so ayun matagal pa naman, kasi PhD ko 2022-2025, tas magstart ako legit job hunting by Spring 2024 (kase 1 yr usually application process ng job hunting and job matching etc.) pero yung thoughts talagaaaaa natitrigger nitong thesis defense / graduation season hahaha
Personal Project/s. Which leads to my next point, na parang andami kong gustong gawin, such as the following:
1. Make a YouTube channel. ANDAMI KONG MATERIALS, for math, chem, ChE, NMAT chem etc., na multiple times ko naman na napresent, so sabi ng kapatid ko, why not make it long-term and permanent sa YouTube ganun, para di napapagod boses ko kakalecture every time, and I think evergreen din naman yung content so good idea. Pero yung discipline ko talaga to allot time gumawa ng content huhu iba rin yung feeling na walang kausap habang nagrerecord etc pero sabi ko, after ng thesis defense, mababalikan ko na dapat to
2. Write a college textbook for PH. Same with #1, pero eto isa sa faint / currently not priority dream siguro pero gusto ko mag-author ng reference textbook for PH :((((( lalo na napansin ko na sa engineering specifically, lahat ng references ay international :(( and marami naman nang ebooks etc pero napansin ko kasi hindi naman nauubos yung buong table of contents pag sa context ng PH syllabus/curriculum huhu so parang gusto ko mag-author ng textbook, like yung first-sem-ng-engineering like chemistry or algebra or calculus na may engineering applications, then make them affordable sa PH engineering students ganun I mean random pastime ko minsan magsulat sa Notes sa phone or sa tissue paper ng table of contents, format and outline ng textbook etc, ayan random excitement thoughts then dadaan na naman thought na hindi ko na naman mapapanindigan or baka wala naman akong karapatan mag-author ganun hahaha pero maganda rin tong personal project kase teaching talaga is my passion / calling jk HAHA ayun
3. Take more part-time / online / remote teaching jobs sa PH. I mean, nakaingrain na yata talaga sakin na security and stability = being part of a company or institution, etc, na hindi ko kaya mag full time free lancing and all kaya siguro nakakatakot yung thought for me na mag-risk to join or create a start-up, or maghanap ng clients for consulting etc. without safety nets. Pero since mukhang patapos na covid and halos pabalik na lahat sa f2f classes next sem, nawawala na rin yung options ko for this pero if meron di ba why not haha nakaready naman lagi yung CV ko, and based sa experience ko last year sa jobstreet, nakuha ko yung dalawang legit regular part-time teaching jobs within 3-4 days both huhu
4. Self-Learning and Online Courses. I know na hindi to profitable and mahirap confidently (and personally) ideclare na I know something if hindi ko naman sya naencounter ‘formally’ either through credited class or in practice, pero as I look through jobs (even yung research and academe jobs), may certain specializations ako na gusto ko sana madevelop, in addition sa 3 yrs research during PhD, pero kase ang hirap na I think mas attractive pa rin sa employers yung years of experience/practice kesa sa years of higher educ :( lalo na for me na super inclined na magtransfer to industry/practice after PhD graduation.
5. Nihongo Study. Haixt eto pa :(( in the long-term, if gusto ko talaga maging permanent dito, inevitable naman na kelangan mag-aral nang malala ng Nihongo, and currently nasa N4-N3 naman na yata yung level ko so magtetake ako ng JLPT N3 sa December 2022. Pero sobrang daunting, mas kinakabahan pa nga ako sa Nihongo skills kesa sa research/teaching/technical skills ko huhu andami dami dami dami dami kong nihongo books dito na di ko pa nababasa huhu sana (and mukha naman) nakatulong yung maraming nihongo classes na tinetake ko for free sa univ, and buti online pa. Pero kasi starting Oct 2022 Fall Semester, balik f2f na rin nihongo classes :(( which means nasa Tokyo na ulit yung class, e nasa Ibaraki ako, so no more formal nihongo classes na ulit sakin :(( good luck sa discipline magself study ng nihongo lalo na if I want to become N2 and N1 soon :((((( pag tumitingin kase ako sa japanese industry job postings, common na nakalagay yung required level ng Japanese language proficiency (kase expected na rin nila na may foreigners na nag-apply) and ayun laging Business-level (N2) tsaka Native-level (N1) yung mga nakalagay para sa engineering careers na gusto ko :(( so eto pa kinakatakot ko kase worst case scenario lagi sa thought ko ay umuwi ng PH kase walang makuhang work dito by 2025 :(( pero G na G and super sasaya rin naman ako if babalik ako ng UP or PNRI after PhD huhu pero ang hirap maenjoy yung thought na gagraduate na ng MS and papunta nang PhD kapag naooverwhelm ng thought ng job hunting by 2024 :(( kase di ko pa maimagine na I can ace job interviews while speaking in Japanese kase weakness ko na nga kanji, pati memorization ng new vocab, wala pa huhu
6. Investment. Ayun since never ako naexpose sa business-related upbringing, kahit lagi ko naririnig yang stocks, investment, franchise, etc etc, wala talagang nangyayari, I know na super smart move to as early as possible masimulan, pero wala talaga, I don’t know how or where to start, and di ko rin sure kung masusubaybayan ko to in the long-term, given yung mga priority ko from #1-5 kanina huhu pero haixt sana makabreak in man lang dito kahit papano
7. Hobbies and Health. Gusto ko rin naman maging physically active kahit papano, takbo takbo ganyan HAHAHA pero anuna ampangit ng sleeping habits ko, laging puyat and all, pati eating habits ko, wala sa oras kumain or tinatamad kumain ganun tas no wonder sasakit ulo ko sa hapon ganun pero ayun, gusto ko pa sana magtravel or maglaro ng online games or magluto ng pinoy food (kase sayang naman kitchen utensils and all kase once ko pa lang natry magluto). Gusto ko rin sana magblog etc, magmentor, magconsultancy, magvolunteer, magpart time sa grocery dito as nagrerestock sa shelves ng items, etc huhu pero minsan kapag naiisip ko na hindi ‘profitable’ in monetary terms, parang less ko na ieentertain yung thought na to :(( sana naman makapagset aside ng time to pursue fun hobbies na not necessarily maiisip ko na waste of time or sayang time imbis na kumikita ako ganun :(( pero ayun kaya pa naman sa time yung entertainment like mobile legends, manga/manhwa, tsaka YouTube para sa WWE HAHAHA
So how is life in Japan? BEST. SUPERB. I am beyond thankful sobra :D I have the highest of praises lalo na sa sensei ko and sa university and sa lab namin, more than enough ang provided resources, conducive environment, and all! Talagang pagdevote ko na lang ng time and focus and kelangan, from time to time andyan pa rin anxiety to try a new equipment or machine or do a certain experiment, pero looking back 2021 until now, sobrang comfortable ko naman na sa most equipment, need ko lang ikeep in mind na matututunan ko rin lahat ng kelangan for research along the way hehe and super thank you rin sa scholarship kasi super comfortable naman ng life ko dito as a student, di rin naman ako gipit na gipit na nagtitipid and hindi naman ako magastos relatively, so nakakaipon talaga huhu ang hirap naman na parang andaming options pero di ko alam ano dapat ipursue, tas di ko pa maconsider sarili ko as financially stable kase nga di pa ako employed dito hay :((
Ayun, parang ang tanda ko na to still have these thoughts ng uncertainties and dilemmas hahaha parang minsan mas ok isipin na makapagsettle in life, build a house and start a family ganun, yung usual traditional life track and hindi distracted ng ganitong aspirations pero ewan haha to each his own talaga
One good realization ko na lang din ay: March 2019, wala pa lahat ng thoughts na to, considered ko as super impossible dream na makapag-aral sa The University of Tokyo, but still, kinaya mag entrance exam habang lockdown sa PH, kinaya mabuhay sa savings for ilang months habang sarado pa ang Japan at Zoom classes pa lahat, kinaya naman yung random episodes ng homesickness and anxiety about job hunting, and now malapit na sa finish line ng MS hehehe if ibang-iba ang life 3 years ago, I hope and believe na mas gaganda and mas malinaw siguro ang plans and career and skills ko (lalo na’t andito ako sa Japan) in 3 years :) ganbatte!!!

Navigating MBBS in Russia: Essential Insights and Pathways
 Hello dear MBBS aspirants!
Your navigation on the webpage shows that you must be searching for studying MBBS in Russia.
If so, the page guides you to have some necessary ideas that you require to know about Russian medical and health care education courses. The information serves as a great support for the international MBBS aspirants.
Russia has more than six million kilometres of land area, making it the biggest country in the world. Russia encompasses nine separate time zones and all of northern Asia. For international students with a wide range of interests—including literature, Science, art, history, and Russian language study—studying in Russia is a popular option. In a setting rich in cultural diversity, foreign students studying in Russia will obtain an excellent education.
MBBS in Russia: A Comprehensive Idea
In essence, MBBS in Russia consists of six years of specialised training that is often pursued separately from other forms of education. The four-year nursing programme and the five-year dentistry and pharmacy specialties are the exceptions. International medical graduates from Russian colleges must undergo nostrification in order to practise medicine in their home land. It's a process for a diploma to be recognised and legalised in their own nation or any other. If Russia and the graduate's home country have an agreement on the mutual recognition of degrees, legalisation is not necessary. In Russia, students go through a number of additional steps for a future specialisation after finishing the basic degree, such as an internship, clinical rotation, or focused residency.
The main form of MBBS in Russia is an internship. It must be finished in order to become a medical practitioner. The foundation of an internship is extensive practice under the supervision of the department head. Students are able to propose theories on the diagnosis and course of therapy for their patients. Since the internship is not a direct medical activity, it is not included towards the student's job experience. International students may apply for internships on a commercial basis or in accordance with international agreements between health organisations. The university and the programme will determine the requirements for admission, which may involve tests, examinations, or interviews. The internship will run for a full year. The last level of advanced postgraduate training is residency, which entails a thorough study of the medical specialty.
Medical university graduates who want to pursue a career in science can enrol in PhD programmes. You must pass the committee's English and specialty examinations, submit a portfolio of your published scientific work, and do well in an interview in order to be accepted. You will have plenty of opportunities to receive a top-notch medical education in Russia. Russian diploma holders find great jobs around the globe. Among international students, one of the most popular subjects of study is medicine.

What is a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)?
The pursuit of knowledge has been a driving force throughout human history, and at the pinnacle of academic achievement stands the Doctor of Philosophy, more commonly known as Ph.D. This coveted degree represents the highest level of academic attainment and is often regarded as the hallmark of intellectual prowess. In this comprehensive exploration, we delve into the essence of a Ph.D., unraveling its mysteries, examining its significance, and shedding light on the arduous yet rewarding journey that leads individuals to earn this distinguished title.
Tumblr media
Defining the Doctor of Philosophy
The term "Doctor of Philosophy" may sound enigmatic to those unfamiliar with the intricacies of academic nomenclature. Contrary to what the name suggests, a Ph.D. is not limited to the study of philosophy. Instead, it encompasses a vast array of disciplines, ranging from the sciences and engineering to humanities and social sciences. The title "Doctor of Philosophy" is a historical relic, harkening back to the origins of the degree in medieval Europe when the pursuit of knowledge was broadly classified under the umbrella of philosophy.
At its core, a Ph.D. is a research-based doctoral degree that signifies a candidate's ability to make an original and significant contribution to their field of study. Unlike other academic degrees that focus on coursework and examinations, a Ph.D. places a paramount emphasis on independent research, critical thinking, and the development of new knowledge.
The Journey Towards a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Embarking on the journey toward a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is not for the faint of heart. The process typically begins with the identification of a research topic, and prospective candidates must demonstrate a profound passion and curiosity for their chosen field. The next step involves an exhaustive review of existing literature to identify gaps in knowledge, paving the way for the formulation of a research question or hypothesis.
Once armed with a clear research direction, Ph.D. candidates undergo a rigorous selection process, gaining admission to a doctoral program at a reputable academic institution. The subsequent years are dedicated to an intensive exploration of the chosen subject, involving in-depth literature reviews, experimentation, data collection, and analysis.
One of the distinguishing features of a Ph.D. program is the close mentorship provided by experienced faculty members. Doctoral candidates work closely with their advisors, engaging in regular discussions and receiving guidance to refine their research methodologies and findings. This mentor-student relationship is a cornerstone of the Ph.D. journey, fostering the development of critical thinking skills and nurturing the next generation of scholars.
The Thesis: Culmination of Intellectual Endeavors
At the heart of the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) journey lies the thesis – a comprehensive document that encapsulates the candidate's research, methodology, findings, and conclusions. The thesis is not merely a report of research activities but a scholarly contribution to the existing body of knowledge. getting a PhD in Ghost 1: prehD
I keep getting questions so here’s my life thus far! getting a PhD is a long road, so I’d like to break this into sections. I’ll edit this post with links to the rest of em as I write em
ACADEMIC HISTORY:
4 years BA in Music Industry, fail out of that college a semester before graduation bc I got mono and then became extremely depressed! being 20 is hell!
3ish years combined MA/BA program in Gender & Sexuality Studies - an MA is not always required for a PhD, but it helped in my case. I am in the US and I am getting my PhD from a school in the UK, which has different admission guidelines
gap years to live life, get a full-time job, and assess future goals/research directions/identify WITH WHOMST I wanted to do my PhD, and on what. you have to come into the PhD application with a pretty solid idea of what you want to study, how, where, with who, and why it matters!
THE PhD ITSELF: GETTING IN
December 2020: attend information sessions about the university and PhD process specific to that uni
January 2021: submit an Expression of Interest, a form provided by my uni with all the basic info you’d expect as well as:
research themes
where I planned to get funding
outline of my research (proposed title, proposed research question, subject area, aims, objectives, historical, contemporary, and theoretical context, proposed methodology, ethical dimensions of research, indicative bibliography, supplementary evidence, academic qualifications and other relevant experience)
January 2021: heard back from my thesis advisors on feedback on the EoI. again, the EoI is specific to my school
January 2021: submitted formal application - the EoI was a (very useful) pre-step there specific to my uni. the formal app included:
3 letters of recommendation
my transcripts
same sort of project-specific info as the EoI, but fleshed out bc I’d worked with my advisors at that point
March 2021: invited to interview. for my interview, I needed to prepare a presentation covering:
my research question
how my project makes a contribution to knowledge (this is what a PhD is. brand new information.)
the broader context of the project
the methodology
the impact/importance of the research (aka why does someone else care)
April 2021: offered a place to study with the university but did NOT get a scholarship lololololol
April-July 2021: bureaucratic hell! this probably won’t happen to you but it happened to me so I’m documenting it!
July 2021: officially put a deposit down and registered
September 2021: officially began program
part 2 of this post will be explaining a lot of the academic terms I used in this and also the milestones specific to my school. feel free to ask me questions though my case is quite unique in some ways!
