Day 147 – Trekking the endangered black rhino

We headed out at 6:30am this morning with our guide and a black rhino tracker. We drove for over an hour on extremely bumpy, rocky roads in our 4x4. Eventually we stopped to pick up another tracker and a policeman. As you would expect, the policeman was dressed in camouflage and was toting an AK47.

We then headed off to track black rhinos. We learned that we are staying at a community-run conservancy. They work in connection with the Namibian government and the Save the Rhinos trust NGO to track and monitor endangered black rhinos in Namibia. They also seek to stop poaching.

The policeman is there to deal with poachers and scare off unexpected wild animals, such as lions and elephants. The trackers track the rhinos every day. If there are guests at the lodge, they get driven, if not, they walk. The guests at this lodge provide important support to the conservation effort. We didn’t fully follow what was going on during the trek as our guide and the others communicated the whole time in Afrikaans.

At some point, we stopped for a quick snack of drinks, ‘chili bites’, which were very tasty pieces of spiced dried beef, and hardboiled eggs.

We hit a watering hole, where the trackers found fresh rhino tracks. The trackers tracked the rhino for a while. At one point, our guide randomly saw the rhino in the distance. We called the trackers so they could catch up with us and we could begin our rhino experience. We got out of the car and walked single file to view the rhino up close, stopping periodically to view the rhino. We got to within 75 metres. We viewed it for a while, it then noticed us and started to charge. The trackers started throwing stones to divert it and it turned and ran in the direction of the stones (see video below). it was a bit surreal to be charged by a black rhino out in the open. The rhino got within 50 metres of us before it was diverted.

The trackers were familiar with this rhino as they have catalogued it. It was a young male named Machawa and had been de-horned. They do this to deter poachers.

We then helped the rangers patrol the area and had a nice bush lunch under a tree. Bons and the others helped set up a table and chairs. They even laid out a table cloth and put out proper plates, napkins and silverware. Bons really seems to enjoy going all out for these bush meals. Lunch was some tasty ham and cheese sandwiches, meat skewers, salads in glass jars and a tomato soup served in a cup out of a thermos.

On our way back, they spotted some more rhino tracks. These led us to another male rhino that was sleeping at the foot of a tree. This one still had his horn and was also young. He did not charge us, he tried to get away from us. The trackers said this male was younger and did not yet have a name. They thought he had been recently pushed out by his mother. We continued to follow him for a short while until he disappeared into the bush. We got within 100 metres of him.

These two experiences are the closest we have been to a black rhino on our world trip, and both were on foot. It was really cool and made us grateful for coming to Namibia.

We headed back for sundowners at the lodge. We saw three more couples that had checked in today: one from Madrid, Spain (living in Ethiopia), one from Paris and one from Hoboken. We joined the couples sitting around the camp fire in the common area and chatted with them. The staff then asked us to walk out of the camp into the darkness. They had set up a surprise dinner in the ‘boma’, or livestock enclosure about 300 metres from the main area.

We sat around a fire that had been set up in the boma and had our starters, which was an oryx skewer with lentil soup (J had chicken). We were then invited to sit at the tables and grab food from the buffet. It was a special experience and we really appreciated how the staff went out of their way to set this up. We returned to the main area, had a night cap and went to bed.
