Daily #34: Blood Dragon
Rathkar Skulleater, the Blood Dragon, scourge of the South, stood atop the roof of the church as it burned around him. Soon the structure would collapse into flame and ash, but the Blood Dragon cared not, for fire would not melt the gold within, nor would it dare to touch his flesh. The rest of the village had already tumbled into ruin and ember, and the smell of charring meat wafted to Rathkar's nostrils. He climbed down the spire - the fire would not harm him, but the fall would be an inconvenience.
At the gate of the church, standing amidst the blackened corpses, stood a small girl. Rathkar hesitated for only a moment before deciding that he would prefer to use his hands than his flameblade. He approached the girl, towering over her, the plates of his armour reflecting the light of the flames around them. He reached for the girl.
"Wow, you're such a hero," said the little girl, hands on her hips. "I want to be just like you when I grow up."
Rathkar Skulleater, the Blood Dragon, the dread flame of the plains, stopped. "Sarcasm?" he frowned, hissing through his sharpened teeth.
"Oh, however can you tell?" she sassed, hand over her mouth in feigned shock.
Rathkar matched her posture, hands on his own hips, beside the many smaller weapons and trophies he carried there. "Now, child -"
She interrupted him. "Yeah I put in a request for help with my mean step mom, and weird old neighbours, and stupid teacher, and all the dumb other kids who make fun of me." She motioned around, arms spread wide. "But don't you think you maybe went a little overboard?"
She... thought that Rathkar Skulleater, the Blood Dragon, he who ate his father's skull... was some kind of... justice-maker for sad babies? "You fail to understand, little one. I am here for..." The Blood Dragon paused and turned, intending to motion to the piles of gold and silver he'd taken to add to his ever-growing hoard. Instead, in the flames, he saw himself, the boy who defied his father the Beast of the High Road, refusing to bend the knee before the bandit king, as this girl refused to bend the knee to the Blood Dragon now.
"Girl," he said, turning back to her. He removed is helmet, shaped as a dragon's skull from the teeth of the townsfolk he'd slaughtered. "You fail to understand. I am not here for them. I am here for you." His hand, clad in a clawed gauntlet, palm exposed for better grip on the flameblade's haft when it ran with blood, reached out to her. "Your sarcasm in the face of horror has surprised and impressed the Blood Dragon. Will you come with me, and learn my ways, so that no living soul will ever again dare to be kind of mean to you?"
She impressed Rathkar once more with the speed and resolve of her reply in the face of his carnage.
"Okay," she said, and took his hand.
