Okay, so I'm not totally sure if anyone else has this issue or if it's not valid or whatever for me to say this but according to society, I'm not overweight I'm normal for my height. But, I feel like I'm overweight hence why ana tumblr. BUT anytime I want to binge or eat sugar I just remind myself "society doesn't think your overweight" and then I binge and gain weight. Does anyone else have this problem??

Hey guys, do you want to do some body builder math with me and talk about why the 2000 calorie a day diet is bullshit?
So to estimate your basal metabolic rate (BMR), you take your weight in pounds and you multiply it by 10, and you get a number of calories. For me, this is about 1850.
Okay, fine. Seems reasonable. But what does that number signify? If you're like me and didn't so much learn what you know about nutrition so much as passively absorb it through the diet industry, you probably think that's about what you should eat in a day to maintain your weight.
But you would be wrong. Basal metabolic rate is the FLOOR. That is the number of calories your body needs in order to maintain itself if you were doing absolutely nothing. If you were lying in bed 24 hours. You never want to go below that BMR number if you can help it, even if you're trying to lose weight, because if you do, your body kind of slams the breaks on your metabolism and you're just going to feel physically and mentally bad.
Even if you do very little walking and no intentional exercise, you should multiply that BMR number by 1.1-1.3 (so, for a person about my weight, 2035 to 2405 calories) in order to get your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE), i.e. the amount you should actually eat in a day.
(keep in mind, these are all ESTIMATES and the actual number is going to vary a bit depending on your age, sex, and body composition)
(it's also basically impossible to get an accurate estimate of how many calories you're burning through activity. If you want the actual TDEE number for yourself you have to record everything you eat and weigh yourself daily and see how it goes. Depending on your history and what your goals are, this may or may not be worth it)

Notably, in the Minnesota starvation experiment, the control diet they had the guys on before the experiment started was 3000 calories a day. Which probably sounds like a lot to most of us! But if you're a young man doing a lot of physical labor, that's about right!
Anyway, the first time I did this math and realized I should be eating 2400 to 2600 calories a day, I was like "that cannot possibly be right" because my whole life, when I was trying to be "good" and not even necessarily trying to lose weight, I was aiming for far less than that.
But I counted my calories and weighed myself for a few weeks and, lo and behold, that's about right.
(and I also had less of a tendency to crave sweets or do things like eat half a loaf of cinnamon raisin bread in one sitting. I.e., it was easier to actually eat healthier)
So who/what is the 2000 calorie a day daily estimate for?? I would have assumed it was meant to be the number of calories needed for the average person. Or at least the average man. But it's not even that. So what is it? No idea. Totally arbitrary.
Anyway. Feed yourself. Be nice to yourself. Your body probably knows what it needs better than you think it does.
