They’re doing good! Yeah, Maggie and Jim Paxton just so you know doing really good.
Tumblr media
He’s still kicking ass as a talented detective, and she’s still rocking it as an interior designer. Maybe talks of adding onto their family? And I’m not talking pets either.

Hide and Seek
This is pretty different than all the multichaptered fics I’ve written recently and posted on ao3. This is totally just a oneshot within the little universe I’ve created over there, so if you haven’t read anything else from this series I’d recommend going over and checking it out!
Read this fic over on ao3!
Check out the rest of the series over on ao3!
“Uncle Peter!” A shrill voice shrieked.
Peter whipped around on the dining chair he was sitting in to see the one and only Cassie Lang barreling at him at slightly worrying speeds.
“Cassie!” Peter greeted, grinning wide. She collided with him in a bear hug, wrapping her arms and legs around him like a koala. “How’s my favorite ant?”
“Ant-astasia is doing great.” Cassie responded, giggling. Ant-astasia was Cassie’s giant pet ant which had finally gotten a real name after Jim Paxton had called it Giant Pet Ant one too many times.
“I thought I was your favorite ant Pete?” Another voice called, sounding hurt. Peter looked to the elevator hallway to see Scott walking towards them.
“Ehh, Ant-astasia has a cooler name.” Peter said, smiling. Scott rolled his eyes then broke into a smile of his own.
“Peanut, why don’t you let Peter go so you don’t suffocate him.” Scott suggested as Peter tried to move, only to get further pinned by the 10-year-old.
Cassie pouted, but let go of Peter and stepped back. Then her eyes lit up as what Peter assumed to be an idea popped into her head. “Let’s play hide and seek!”
“With just the two of you?” Scott asked, raising an amused eyebrow.
Cassie tilted her head as she considered this.
Peter smiled wider. “Friday, who is currently in the tower and not doing anything important?”
“Captain Rogers and Sargent Barnes are currently in the gym sparring where they have been for the past two hours, Sir and Doctor Banner are in their respective labs, and Agents Romanov and Barton are currently heading up the elevator to your location.” Friday responded.
“Could you call them all up here? Tell them it’s a required team building exercise.” Peter instructed. Cassie smiled brightly while Scott shook his head amusedly.
Minutes later the aforementioned Avengers were assembled in the living area of the common room, some looking decidedly more interested in whatever Peter had planned then others.
“Ok everyone, Cassie has requested that we play hide and seek.” Peter announced to the group.
“Peter, I don’t have time for any games.” Tony said, standing up from the couch. “I have important deadlines- “
“That aren’t due for another week and you’re almost finished so you have plenty of time to play with us.” Peter finished with a shit-eating grin. Tony stared at him before rolling his eyes fondly.
“What are the rules and boundaries, and are there prizes?” Steve asked.
“Rules are normal hide and seek rules. For boundaries, you can use the common floor, labs, and gym,no private floors or other parts of the tower. There might be prizes, I haven’t decided yet.” Peter said. “Any other questions?”
“Yeah, just one.” Clint said, looking around. “Who’s it first?”
“Well, since you asked, you.” Peter decided, grinning. “Count to 200.”
With that everyone took off in different directions, leaving a shocked Clint in the living room.
One hour. That’s how long it took everyone to find Natasha. An entire hour of time spent by everyone except Bucky to find the assassin. They’d finally found her in the gym tucked behind the weight rack. Her tight black shirt and pants blended seamlessly with the floor and rack and she stayed absolutely still. Peter had only managed to find her because she had shifted her head slightly and a bit of her red hair had stuck out.
Bucky on the other hand had taken just as long to find. He had hidden in the prosthetics lab, laying on a shelf with his metal arm sticking out. He’d blended in so well that Clint had passed him 10 times before Cassie finally pointed him out while giggling.
“Let’s play again!” Cassie squealed.
“Who got found first?” Tony asked, looking down at his phone.
“Steve.” Clint said. “Count to 200.”
Apparently hiding on the ceiling wasn’t the smartest idea when you’re known for randomly going on the ceiling. Peter was the second person to get found, the first being Tony who hadn’t even moved when everyone else had gone to hide.
“Who are we looking for now?” Peter asked, looking around for hidden Avengers.
“Bucky.” Steve decided.
“It took forever to find him last time though.” Peter pointed out. “Why don’t we look for like, Clint? I bet you he’s in the vents.”
“It did, but unlike Clint I came prepared.” Steve said, pulling out… a metal detector?
Peter’s brows creased in confusion before the lightbulb went off in his head and he started laughing.
“You’re going to detect Bucky’s arm with the metal detector?” Peter asked between laughs.
Steve grinned, then held out the detector and followed the beeping.
The detector led them through the kitchen where they found Cassie. Well, more like Cassie found them since she popped out from inside a cabinet where she was hiding.
“What’s t- “She started before Peter shushed her. She looked confused for a moment before realization dawned in her eyes and she jumped up, grabbing Peter’s hand.
Steve, Peter, and Cassie continued following the beeping of the metal detector into the hallway on the common floor. They passed the dining room and by extension, the living room. As they passed the bathroom door the beeping increased in intensity.
Steve met Peter’s eyes and pointed at the door. Peter nodded and grabbed the handle, twisting it carefully. Steve entered the bathroom, waving the metal detector all around until it stopped beeping all together, it’s red light flashing as he pointed it at the laundry chute.
Peter opened the chute door to see Bucky’s face scowling at him.
“Is that a metal detector?” Bucky asked incredulously as he climbed back out into the bathroom.
Cassie nodded while giggling ferociously. Peter joined in her laughter as Steve cracked a smile. Bucky just rolled his eyes and joined the group as they sought out the other hiders.
“Cap, why are you holding a metal detector?” Tony asked once everyone had been found. The group had gathered in the common room again half an hour later. It hadn’t taken as long to find Natasha as Bucky’s loud complaining had made her laugh so hard that she couch she was hiding beneath had shaken slightly.
Bucky answered the question with a glare and Tony dropped the topic.
“So… Who’s it?” Bruce asked.
“Tony was found first.” Steve replied.
“I’m done, I have work to do.” Tony announced and stalked off, not looking up from his phone once.
“So, Peter’s it then.” Steve corrected, rolling his eyes at Tony’s antics.
“I’ll help!” Cassie offered excitedly. Steve handed the metal detector to Peter and the duo began to count, the other Avengers dispersing to hide.
“He should be right over…” Peter said, waving the metal detector around. Cassie and Peter had followed the device into the gym. The beeping shut off and the red light flashed when he pointed the detector at the shelving unit.
“Got it!” Peter said, running to the shelf with Cassie at his heels. Cassie dug around and picked up an arm. But not just any arm, Bucky’s arm.
Peter stared at the arm flabbergasted. Then Cassie started to laugh.
“He took off the arm!” Cassie shrieked.
Peter rolled his eyes. “Come on Cassie, guess we’ll have to do this the old-fashioned way.
They never did manage to find Bucky, but after an hour and a half of searching they called it off and let Bruce start counting. Clint had laughed so hard at their failure that he fell out of the ceiling vent and hurt himself, so he was sitting this round out.
Peter and Cassie ran into the living room searching for a spot, only to see Bucky standing there, his flesh arm on his hip, smirking at them.
“Hey, you cheated!” Peter called.
“I was just using my resources.” Bucky defended, grinning. “If you’re going to try to get me by using a metal detector, then I’m going to remove the thing that you’re tracking. Simple logic.”
Cassie giggled and tackled Bucky in a hug. Bucky tensed in surprise, then relaxed, fluffing her hair.
“Found you all.” Bruce called, peaking in the doorway.
Peter spun around, displeasure crossing his features. “Hey, no fair!”

My Year in Movies: Favorite Non-2018 Feature Films (Part 2)
Continuing the countdown of my favorite movies I saw for the first time in 2018 that were released in previous years... for part 1 of this list, click here.
39. Tokyo Drifter (1966, directed by Seijun Suzuki, country of origin: Japan)
Tumblr media
Seijun Suzuki pulls together his favorite tropes from the Western, film noir, and Yakuza genres and throws a post modern, new wave sensibility on top complete with lots of neon and surrealism. The end result is one of the most stylistically bold movies I’ve ever encountered, and its influence extends to modern auteurs like Quentin Tarantino, Jim Jarmusch, and Nicolas Winding Refn. Tokyo Drifter (which has nothing to do with the Fast & Furious franchise as far as I know) follows a gangster on the run, but the plot really is secondary to the overall feel of the movie. Really fun and one I can imagine revisiting a lot just for its aesthetic choices and action set pieces. Rent it on Amazon Prime; in the meantime, here’s a pretty decent fan-made trailer.
38. Born to Kill (1947, directed by Robert Wise, country of origin: US)
Tumblr media
Hollywood’s original bad boy Lawrence Tierney stars in this nasty little noir that fully lives up to its violent title. Sam Wilde (Tierney) is a gorgeous, amoral social climber who doesn’t let a little trifle like murder stand in the way of getting what he wants. Helen Brent (Claire Trevor) finds herself strangely drawn to him, even as she learns of his criminal leanings. There’s a particularly lustful scene between Sam and Helen that could be a direct influence on Natural Born Killers, actually. The fact that this picture was directed by Robert Wise, best known for his work on The Sound of Music and West Side Story, makes it all the more interesting--this pulpy film doesn’t have any musical numbers but it certainly is well-crafted and choreographed. If you love a good antihero, you owe it to yourself to watch this. Available for rent on Amazon, YouTube, and Vudu.
37. Throw Momma From the Train (1987, directed by Danny DeVito, country of origin: US)
Tumblr media
This comic riff on Strangers on a Train starts off with murder on its mind, but there’s a surprising sweetness lying just below the surface. I’m sure most people have already seen this film but in case you haven’t, you’re in for a hilarious and endearing story that showcases peak Billy Crystal and Danny DeVito. Anne Ramsey plays the titular “Momma,” and she was nominated for both the Oscars and the Golden Globes in this supporting role. There are lots of ways to watch this movie for free, including Amazon Prime, YouTube, Vudu, GooglePlay, and Showtime.
36. Johnny Guitar (1954, directed by Nicholas Ray, country of origin: US)
The title refers to Sterling Hayden’s outlaw cowboy, but the real star of the show is Joan Crawford as Vienna: a saloon owning, jeans wearing, piano playing woman who takes on the whole town in a showdown. Portrayals of women in Westerns vary, but few emanate such power and self-assuredness as Vienna.
Another woman, tellingly named Emma Small (played by Mercedes McCambridge), has set her sights on getting rid of Vienna and her establishment once and for all, and she will stop at no amount of violence or trickery to make it happen. So basically this is Mean Girls but in the Wild West. Offscreen, Joan Crawford was hooking up with director Nicholas Ray; and she’d previously been romantically involved with McCambridge’s now-husband. Both ladies also consumed a fair amount of booze while filming. This led to their rivalry bleeding into real life, and perhaps added to the tension we see on screen between the two.
This movie didn’t have the warmest reception when it premiered stateside (Bosley Crowther on Crawford’s Vienna: “...as sexless as the lions on the public library steps and as sharp and romantically forbidding as a package of unwrapped razor blades.”) But European audiences devoured it, and it became beloved of people like Francois Truffaut who saw it as a major influence. You can watch it now on Hulu or rent from a number of streaming platforms.
35. Sonatine (1993, directed by Takeshi “Beat” Kitano, country of origin: Japan)
Tumblr media
Takeshi Kitano wrote, directed, and starred in this cult take on Yakuza films. In it, he plays Murakawa, a gangster who dispatches (often in creatively cruel ways) anyone his bosses happen to dislike. But he’s starting to grow weary of this way of life when he gets sent on a new assignment that has him mediating a dispute with a rival gang in Okinawa. He suspects that he may be the real target, but goes along with the order. While hiding out between confrontations, Murakawa and a batch of young recruits find ways to pass the time--shooting cans off each other’s heads, playing a roulette version of rock paper scissors, pretending to be sumo wrestlers, and more.
There’s not a lot of dialogue here, and Kitano plays his character with a stoicism that Buster Keaton and Alain Delon no doubt influenced. But the poetry and emotion are all in the action (and inaction) on screen. Here is a man whose main accomplishments are surviving bloody shootouts and racking up the body count for his employer--no wonder he hallucinates about self-destruction and walks the beach in a daze. There’s actually a good bit of comedy here too, as the movie isn’t afraid to veer into cartoonish moments and satirize the very genre it portrays. I also have to specifically call out the action scenes, especially one near the end--completely memorable, unique, and gorgeously shot. Watch this via rental on Amazon, YouTube, and GooglePlay--especially if you’re a fan of movies like Drive, Kill Bill, or Le Samourai.
34. Metropolitan (1990, directed by Whit Stillman, country of origin: US)
Tumblr media
My first encounter with Whit Stillman came via 2016′s Love and Friendship, his adaptation of a Jane Austen story. When his debut film appeared on Filmstruck, I realized what a perfect fit Austen and Stillman really are. This movie follows a group of (mostly) wealthy teenagers in Manhattan, who attend debutante balls and gather at each other’s homes for long pretentious conversations and romantic sparring. If Austen were alive today, no doubt she would have written a novel in the same setting, filled with the same biting wit (no pun intended) that Stillman displays. If you like your movies with a lot of action and plot twists, this may not be your cup of tea; but if you enjoy the works of, say, Woody Allen/Noah Baumbach/Wes Anderson then you will definitely find this a subtle delight. No big names amongst the cast; and many of them only did one or two other projects after this, but I think that adds to the feeling of naïveté and naturalism. Random observation, but when I watched this movie I found connections between a number of its characters and the cast of The Breakfast Club--see if you agree. Right now you can rent this via iTunes, and since it takes place around Christmas and New Year’s, this would be a great time to watch.
33. Radio Days (1987, directed by Woody Allen, country of origin: US)
This might be the sweetest, least cynical movie in Woody Allen’s filmography. It’s a love letter to the 1930s and 40s, when families would gather around the radio (rather than the TV) for music, serials, and news of the outside world. Seth Green plays the Woody stand-in as a child, Mia Farrow plays an aspiring radio actress, Larry David pops up as the Communist next door neighbor--it’s a real hoot. The music (from the likes of Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, and Glenn Miller) is gorgeous and it’s fun to see old New York recreated for this film. Suitable for all ages and utterly delightful, you can watch it on Hulu with a subscription or rent it on Vudu for $2.99.
32. Pickup (1951, directed by Hugo Haas, country of origin: US)
Tumblr media
I caught up with this low-budget B-movie noir during Noir City Chicago, and fell head over heels for it. The director plays the lead character, a lovable but lonely railroad worker named Hunky (he does not live up to this name in appearance). When he encounters the gorgeous and sassy Betty (Beverly Michaels) at a carnival, he can’t believe a guy like him could hold the romantic interest of such a hottie. As luck would have it, though, she’s more attracted to his life savings than to him. What a golddigger. What sets this movie apart is the addition of a little plot twist: Hunky loses his hearing in an accident, which is just fine by the conniving Betty who can now scheme and talk trash around her husband. But when Hunky’s hearing unexpectedly returns, he doesn’t tell anyone and discovers that his beloved wifey is plotting his demise. Bonus: There’s a pretty adorable puppy in the mix. This isn’t available on DVD, sadly, but someone has uploaded it to YouTube and if you have 77 minutes to kill, I recommend checking it out.
31. Ghost (1990, directed by Jerry Zucker, country of origin: US)
Look, I love Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg and Patrick Swayze just as much as the next person, but for some reason I had always assumed that Ghost was this really cheesy paranormal romance. Wrong! It’s a charming murder mystery with some legit scary moments a lot of comedy, and, yes, some romance too. So if you have somehow missed this gem, you can catch up with it for 99 cents right now on Amazon or rent it for a Few Dollars More on other streaming sites.
30. One False Move (1992, directed by Carl Franklin, country of origin: US)
Tumblr media
In part one of this list, I mentioned watching multiple Bill Paxton movies in 2018. This one features Paxton as a small town sheriff with illusions of grandeur--instead of settling small time domestic disputes, he’d love to one day solve murders and thwart serial killers and arrest drug kingpins in the big city. He gets his chance to do something bigger when a car full of murderous fugitives rolls into town. The LA detectives on the case don’t quite know what to make of Paxton; but he views them as heroes. When he gets his chance to show them what he’s made of, he doesn’t flinch.
Billy Bob Thornton co-wrote the screenplay and co-stars in the film, another connection between this and the other Paxton entry on my list (A Simple Plan). Here, he’s a vile and brutal sociopath (a role he’d go on to play in the TV adaptation of Fargo), with a girlfriend named Fantasia (Cynda Williams) that might be having second thoughts about their relationship. Director Carl Franklin is perhaps better known for the Denzel Washington neo noir Devil in a Blue Dress; and Franklin himself introduced a double feature of these two films at Noir City Chicago. He’s a brilliant, economical director with a deep well of classical film knowledge and a knack for capturing defining character traits in the space of a few frames. Rent this movie on Amazon, Vudu, or YouTube and prepare for a gritty, moving ride.
29. Peeping Tom (1960, directed by Michael Powell, country of origin: England)
Tumblr media
I caught up with this out of print masterpiece (purchased at my local library sale for 50 cents on Criterion DVD!) during my October horror viewing, and immediately wanted it to find a wider audience. Reviled upon its initial release, it follows a talented but troubled young filmmaker whose obsession involves recording the final moments of his murder victims’ lives, as they realize their fate. Pretty twisted, I know. The exploration of voyeurism and the relationship between the camera, its subjects, and an audience really make this a fascinating watch, both from a technical perspective and as a critique of moviemaking and consumption. One can’t help but see the influence this movie has had on horror filmmakers from Wes Craven to John Carpenter, particularly in the way it forces us to identify with the psychologically damaged killer instead of centering the narrative on his victims. Massively underrated, and deserving of your attention if you consider yourself a fan of horror movies. Watch it via rental on a number of streaming platforms.
That concludes part 2 of the list! Stay tuned for the next segment, coming soon!

Profiles in IMDb Greatness: Glenn Fleshler
Tumblr media
I love the Internet Movie Database. was that the big boy from Modern Family working the front desk at a hotel in Almost Famous? Sure was. As such I enjoy looking over random performer pages and arbitrarily judging the scope and quality of their careers to determine if they merit entry into my vaguely defined IMDb Hall of Fame. Today’s enshrinee: Glenn Fleshler
Tumblr media
Hello old friends, hope everyone is doing well during this pandemic and instead of protesting at state capitol buildings with the shittiest people alive you’re safe at home enjoying wholesome blog content. While riding out quarantine the mind has more time to wander and ponder the deeper mysteries, like what are the moral obligations a government has to keeping its population alive and in the nearly 50 years of HBO has there ever been a more vital figure in its programming than Glenn Fleshler over the past decade?
Much like Gus Frerotte appearing out of nowhere to be every team’s backup quarterback at some point in the last 20 years, Fleshler just strolls from one prestige television set to another covering the gamut from drama to horror to comedy. I considered writing this post months ago when I first realized we were dealing with Mr. HBO here but quarantine boredom was just the propellant needed to get this baby off the ground.
First Listed Role: While fans of the IMDb HOF may remember my affinity for these actors getting their starts in soap operas the true character actor spirit is captured from appearing in network crime dramas so of course Glenn Fleshler opening up with an episode of Homicide: Life on the Street which also featured friend of the HOF Jon Polito! The episode description is simply “The team investigate a woman who appears to be murdering her husbands for the insurance money” so I’ll assume they ripped the whole thing from the plot of Addams Family Values and Fleshler played Uncle Fester.
Newest Role: Of course after calling Fleshler Mr. HBO I’m immediately served up a role on Showtime’s Billions. I didn’t get into that show when it premiered since I don’t trust Showtime original programming anymore and when I tried to start it up a couple weeks ago I made it five minutes before realizing that a show about rich assholes talking about the stock market wasn’t what I was looking for in 2020. I’m sure it’s delightful.
Tumblr media
CSI/Law & Order/NCIS Guest Spots: Three episodes of Law & Order and three more of SVU, six different characters. This is legendary stuff. Let’s go in chronological order where I play my favorite game of trying to guess who the character was in each episode.
Don Hamilton, 2/6/02 - A former aide for a state senator has turned up missing and it’s revealed that she was having an affair with the senator and was pregnant. My money’s on Fleshler as the murderous, fertile politician.
Dr. Noah Kamens, 11/1/02 - Yikes, child sex ring episode here. Fingers crossed that Fleshler was just appearing as a child psychologist and not as a predatory pediatrician but as we’ll visit later he can pull off menacingly creepy well.
Rick Kawalchuck, 4/20/05 - A porn star is murdered, safe to assume Fleshler is the corpse and this light-hearted episode is filled with wisecracks about how with his rigor mortis they won’t be able to close the coffin.
Jimmy Curren, 12/3/08 - A man from upstate New York is found dead in Chinatown, a realistic crime based on my knowledge of midupstate New Yorkers and their appreciation of a good Chinese buffet. This crime leads all the way to the governor’s office and since Jimmy doesn’t sound gubernatorial I’ll guess Fleshler is an adviser who kills the victim over the last potsticker.
Corrections Officer Kravitz, 10/7/09 - This game isn’t fun if you do all the work for me, character name.
Phillip Altshuler, 12/6/17 - A true pro still doing these gigs when at this point he’d been in some truly great TV. this episode is about the rape of a social media star so he’s the venture capitalist funding the app and trying to keep the story under wraps.
One of these days I really should watch an episode of Law & Order.
Hall of Fame Ballot Submissions: Just from the HBO division we got Sex and the City (he looks like Charlotte’s type based on the schlubby lawyer she ends up marrying down the stretch), Boardwalk Empire (not the best show but I did love him as George Remus who always referred to himself as “Remus”), True Detective (hope everyone’s working from home in case remembering the “Making flowers” scene gets you understandably horny), The Knick (technically Cinemax but I always thought they were owned by the same crew, if not when a show has a guy taking a shot of cocaine to the dick it gets in here), The Night Of (kind of became a mess at the end and there entirely too much John Turturro foot picking but the pilot was great), Barry (fantastic show, Fleshler should do more comedy) and then he turned up in the best episode of the incredible Watchmen season.
What a run, when Glenn Fleshler passes on down the road I hope this kicks off his funeral.
youtube
Miscellaneous Credits: I didn’t think Joker in any way deserved a Best Picture nomination and the conversation around it was embarrassing all around since in the end it was a mostly entertaining Taxi Driver ripoff but hey, Glenn Fleshler can say he was in award nominated motion picture.
Tumblr media
Highest Rated IMDb Entry: Kinda surprised that the True Detective finale landed here since I remember there being disappointment with it even though I thought it and that whole season were fantastic (his relative/ladyfriend Ann Dowd would be a good one to cover in the next post so keep that in mind for the next pandemic) but here it is at a robust 9.6. Fleshler is the right kind of unnerving after a season of buildup to who the killer was. I can see how a fella like that would catch on in multiple Law & Orders universes even if he’s appeared enough times for people to question why everyone in New York City looks like Glenn Fleshler.
Lowest Rated IMDb Entry: A 2016 film called The Rendezvous where Fleshler’s the only name I recognize on the cast list. Let’s learn about this movie together, shall we.
youtube
Oof, I was rooting for armageddon to come take me less than a minute in to that. My only intrigue in diving in further is to see if the “we work for a higher power” sticks with that Steel Magnolias accent all throughout the movie. And the quips, my god the quips. The “you think?” line is what happens when Marvel movies are oversold for their witty banter, everyone wants a taste of jokes they don’t have to work on.
IMDb Fun Fact: The only three I had to choose from
Off-Broadway, he has appeared in such plays as Measure for Measure and Pericles, Prince of Tyre.
Fleshler studied acting at New York University's Tisch School of the Performing Arts, from which he has an MFA.
Fleshler's Broadway credits include Death of a Salesman, Guys and Dolls, Arcadia and The Merchant of Venice.
Neat.

ʻŌhiʻa lehua: the Foundation of Hawaii’s Forest Ecosystem
Tumblr media
Article by Aaron Ochoa and Holly Richards,  public affairs officers with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Pacific Region.
This article is part of a series examining the issues impacting Hawaii’s forest birds.
When you travel through the barren lava fields of the big island of Hawaii, you will see single trees  breaking up through the bleak expanse of jagged black basalt. The outreaching limbs contain foliage that dots the landscape in green and yellow and red. These hardy trees - ōhi‘a lehua  - are some of the first plants to colonize fresh lava beds and start the process of turning barren rock into lush landscape.  ʻŌhiʻa lehua are the cornerstone of Hawaiian forests, and they are under attack. Today an invasive fungal pathogen called Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death (ROD) is destroying the ōhi‘a tree and threatening the entire fabric of forest ecosystem that is woven around it.
ʻŌhiʻa lehua are the most abundant trees throughout the Hawaiian Islands. They make up 80% of Hawaiian forests and are found nowhere else in the world.
ROD is a fungal pathogen that infests and kills ōhi‘a trees. The fungus enters the trees through an open wound in the bark and then moves through the layers of the tree attacking its ability to draw nutrients and water from the soil. Since it was identified in 2015, ROD has affected nearly 50,000 acres on the island of Hawaii, and has killed more than 100,000 'ohi'a trees.
Tumblr media
Photo: `Apapane rely heavily on the nectar of the `ohia-lehua blossoms, which flower at very different times throughout the islands and are thought to travel far within their home islands following the flowering of the lehua blossoms. Photo credit: Jack Jeffery/USFWS
Threats to the trees become threats to the birds.
ʻŌhiʻa forests support an incredible diversity of life, from the tree snails that feed on the leaves of the ōhi‘a to the very watersheds that give drinking water to the people of Hawaii. “ ʻŌhiʻa are basically  the foundation of the ecosystem here. A lot of birds depend on ōhi‘a for the nectar and the flowers,”said Steve Kendall, Wildlife Biologist for Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge.
ʻŌhiʻa is considered a keystone species in Hawaiian forests, so any impact to the trees has the potential to ripple through ecosystem and cause disturbances in watersheds, bird populations, understory plants, and cultural traditions.
A number of endangered forest birds rely almost solely on the ōhi‘a for food and shelter. The tiny endangered Hawaii ‘ākepa nests exclusively in  cavities found in mature old growth koa and ‘ōhi‘a trees, and they rely on ōhi‘a seeds and nectar for their food.

But it isn’t just the endangered species that rely on ōhi‘a that are placed in jeopardy by the spread of ROD. Species that are not threatened yet, but are heavily reliant on ōhi‘a,  could soon be in trouble as well - particularly those species that have been forced into narrow bands of high elevation ōhi‘a forests by the spread of avian malaria.
“If ROD keeps expanding into higher elevations, into these important reserves, the impact could be pretty devastating,” said Eben Paxton a  Research Ecologist with the USGS.

“Many native bird species – like the ‘i‘iwi - rely on ʻōhiʻa. The island of Hawai‘i is home to 90 percent of the world’s ‘i‘iwi population, and those birds depend on the ʻōhiʻa tree for food and breeding,” said Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge Project Leader Jim Kraus.

Currently, ROD has only been detected on the island of Hawaii, and has not spread to any of the other Hawaiian Islands. Scientists, researchers and land managers are working together to understand various aspects of this new disease and find a way to protect Hawaii’s forests and forest birds.

The US Fish Wildlife Service is a member of the Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death (ROD) Working Group and has provided funds to the US Forest Service and Carnegie Airborne Observatory to conduct ROD work. The ROD working group is furthering the research and technology to detect, diagnose and mitigate this disease.
Some of the current research includes using computer modeling and geographic information systems to find patterns of the disease, using DNA sequencing to improve the ability to test for ROD in the field, testing different varieties of ʻōhiʻa to search for resistance to ROD, and testing the best methods for preventing the spread of ROD. For now, preventing the spread of ROD is the best way to protect some of Hawaii’s most fragile ecosystems.
Next in the series:
We explore how avian malaria is changing the sights and sounds of Hawaii’s forests, even as scientists and conservationists across Hawaii are working together to find solutions.

[caption id="attachment_1552" align="alignnone" width="1063"] Ryan trong bộ phim Two guys a girl and a pizza place[/caption]
[caption id="attachment_1545" align="alignnone" width="1184"] Definitely, Maybe[/caption]
Năm 2009, anh xuất hiện trong bộ phim X-Men tiền truyện, X-Man Origins: Wolverine trong vai Wave Wilson / Weapon XI.
[caption id="attachment_1553" align="alignnone" width="800"] Ryan trong phim X-Men[/caption]
Anh cũng tham gia vào bộ phim hài The Change-Up cùng năm 2011.
2016 - nay

Chapter 17-- [Untitled]
Written by “The Countess”
(In which Mr. McClure confronts his daughter’s husband.)
[Editor’s note: the original chapter did not have a title.]
* * * * *
“Clyde! My darling! How came you here? I saw you enter, half an hour ago and thought you were ministering to some poor, wretched invalid. I came over to find you and have been stumbling through dingy halls and turning rusty knobs ever since, and here--”
For the first time Mr. McClure’s eyes fall on Jim Paxton. He starts forward, his eyes riveted on the dark, handsome face, his hands clinched.
“You here!”
“Yes, father!” The younger man turns with an easy nonchalance surprising under the circumstances. “I had an engagement with my wife--”
“Your wife! And what is my child doing here? Clyde, what does this mean?”
With an exclamation born of the most intense suffering Clyde throws herself at her father’s feet and implores his forgiveness.
My forgiveness?” Mr. McClure passes a hand over his forehead and looks at her, bewildered, half-conscious of approaching evil. “Explain yourself, girl! But leave this man first and come home with me!”
“That’s it! Oh, that’s it, papa! I can’t leave him! I can never-leave-him-again!” The words are the essence of despairing frenzy. “He is my husband!”
McClure started and would have fallen had it not been for Clyde’s arms now thrown around his neck. The golden head with its tiny bonnet slipping away from it, lay on his shoulder. She seemed years older than the girl he had treasured as his one idol for eighteen years.
He gasped. “Morningstar-- Paxton, you villain, is this true?”
“It is! She does not seem particularly happy, does she? But she’s a brick and I admire her spunk.”
“Insolence!”
The gold-glinted head is raised. Two eyes, like summer skies dripping with sunny showers, gaze into the ruined man’s face.
“Papa! I loved him! Don’t blame him alone!”
“When-- when were you married?”
“Over a year ago! It was a love match, I assure you!” and Paxton smiles grimly.
McClure pushes Clyde from him and confronts the man, his brain reeling, his strong frame trembling with passionate anger.
“You fiend! Not content with the bold-faced bank robbery-- not satisfied with dragging one of the pillars of Wall Street into the gutter of bankruptcy-- longing to break me down more than you have already-- you must needs marry my daughter! You must carry away my idol! My one sustaining prop! You have taught her to deceive me-- her father! Scoundrel! The rest counted as naught compared to this!
He raises his arm as though he would crush, with one blow, all life from the craftily smiling man before him.
A wild, despairing shriek from Clyde stops him.
Paxton turns to his beautiful victim. “Clyde, do you want me rearrested? Is this your wifely obedience and love?” he whispers imploringly, looking into her face with eyes as large with pleading and anger as those of a wild beast brought to bay. “Think of the notoriety-- the position you will place yourself in--”
“Clyde, come home immediately! Yes, you villain, that smile will soon be forever lost to view! You shall suffer as I alone can make you! Clyde, darling-- don’t look so wild! You have done wrong but I love you still! When he is justly punished, we may resume our old place in the world-- we--”
“You forget, sir,” begins Paxton, with blanched face and trembling lips-- all such men are cowards when tested-- “You forget that, as my wife, Clyde owes her first obedience to me. Aside from that, Mr. McClure, do you want to make her wretched-- do you want to bring her into unenviable notoriety-- do you--”
“Make her wretched, you devil? Who would more successfully accomplish that end than you? Clyde was married without my consent when she was under your influence-- she was a mere child--”
“She is of age now. Let us ask her to decide the case!”
“With all my heart!-- Clyde, my dear little daughter! I forgive you, knowing how plausible this villain may be-- how I was betrayed myself-- I blame not you alone, my darling, for this misalliance. I am to blame for guarding my jewel too well. But we will forget the past-- you and I-- you can obtain a divorce easily from this fellow, who could only make you unhappy-- I could prosecute him, regain my old position in the world, and then-- Clyde, answer me! I have idolized you from babyhood-- come to me!”
She ran toward him, her bright hair falling from its Psyche knot and rippling over her somber gown like cloth-of-gold.
“Papa!”
“You see what her choice is!”
“I have not made my plea, sir!” With haughty grace and the assurance born of a long and careful study of Clyde’s vulnerable points, Paxton advanced and, laying his hand on Clyde’s arm-- seeming not to notice her recoil, began:
“Clyde, is it over a year since you and I promised to love, cherish, and honor one another. You told me you loved me. I offered to give you up to any one your guardian might select for your husband but you would not hear of it. You promised to obey me and serve me and all the service I have required was for you to keep my whereabouts secret for the last seven weeks-- weeks of peril to me--”
“Peril richly deserved,” interrupted Clyde’s father hotly. “Clyde, you have looked to this thief’s safety when your father, to whom you owe all, was struggling to right himself in the eyes of his creditors! I see now why you were so anxious to get the position at the World office! It was to keep all news of this villain from my friends and the detectives. Speak, girl, is this true?”
“Papa! Papa!”
Paxton, with the theatrical instinct so natural to him, seeing a chance for an effective scene, rushed to his wife as her father thrust her from his arms.
“Clyde, my darling! My wife! You have had no opportunity to test my love for you yet, but I swear, by my father’s honored name, that if you come to me we shall be happy!”
“Your father’s name?” sneered McClure, totally beside himself with rage. “What is it, pray?”
“Berys, Lord Paxton, of Cuthbertshire, England.”
“Another lie!”
“I can prove it in any way you ask.”
“That’s neither here nor there! I shall inquire into the matter later, perhaps, to recover my stolen money, but now we must decide on my child’s future. My child! I believed you pure as an angel and you have deceived me as basely as this rascal! More basely, Clyde. I trusted you as I do my God. But, false or true, I owe you a father’s protection. Will you come to me?”
“A wife’s first allegiance is to her husband,” murmured Paxton, in rich, full tones, adding, with his earnest, handsome eyes looking straight into Clyde’s, “My darling!”
“Your fascination is that of a snake, you dog!” and McClure placed his hand over his daughter’s eyes as though he would shield her from the fixed stare of the magnificent eyes.
“Speak, my wife!”
He had nothing more to do with McClure. He was shrewd enough to know that if he gained Clyde, her father, no matter how angry he might be, would dismiss all idea of prosecution, for her sake, so Paxton addressed all his words-- all his fascinating looks-- to Clyde. It was remarkable-- the influence this hawk had for the poor little dove. Even now, when sheltered in her father’s arms, knowing how that father had been betrayed, how she herself had been victimized-- even now, I say, she felt the wild, passionate, romantic love of last year come back to her in all its intensity.
“Speak, Clyde!”
“Papa,” she cried, casting aside his hand and looking shyly into Paxton’s eyes. “Papa, I love you! I’m sorry if I was false to you. I--”
“You will come back to me?”
“No. I will go with my husband!”
Paxton stretches out his arms and she falls, fainting, into them.
There is a sharp, quick oath, a moan, and poor broken-hearted McClure has left them alone together.

Look at the above image. On the left, of course, is Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, at the Senate Judiciary Committee for his confirmation hearings. Behind him is his former clerk, longtime Republican legal operative Zina Bash. But what is Bash doing with her hand? Is she resting it normally? Is she making an “okay” sign? Or could it be that she’s making a … WHITE POWER HAND SIGNAL?
This is 2018, and so naturally, some prominent #resistance Twitter personalities jumped on the latter allegation, seeing Bash’s hand movements as proof of Republican complicity with white supremacist movements:
Kavanaugh’s former law clerk Zina Bash is flashing a white power sign behind him during his Senate confirmation hearing. They literally want to bring white supremacy to the Supreme Court. What a national outrage and a disgrace to the rule of law. pic.twitter.com/uQGOpNa6xg
— Eugene Gu, MD (@eugenegu) September 4, 2018
Eugene Gu, a prominent anti-Trump doctor who recently made news when he was accused of sexual assault, racked up more than 13,000 retweets and 17,500 likes for his tweet accusing Bash.
Keith Rubin, an Army veteran whose Twitter bio states he “love[s] everything except racism,” got even more engagement on his version of the post:
In a since-deleted tweet, Amy Siskind, the prominent Twitter personality who writes a weekly list of #NotNormal things the Trump administration has done, stated that the hand signal should disqualify Kavanaugh from the Supreme Court.
Before we go any further: Bash was not making a “white power hand signal.” You can, if you want, trust the word of her husband, John Bash, who is currently US attorney for the Western District of Texas:
Zina is Mexican on her mother’s side and Jewish on her father’s side. She was born in Mexico. Her grandparents were Holocaust survivors. We of course have nothing to do with hate groups, which aim to terrorize and demean other people — never have and never would. 2/3
— US Attorney John Bash (@USAttyBash) September 4, 2018
But if his word isn’t enough, you can listen to real experts on white supremacist movements.
“No one should assume anything about the use of such a gesture unless there are other unmistakable white supremacist signifiers in that context as well,” Mark Pitcavage, an expert on right-wing extremism at the Anti-Defamation League, tweeted, adding:
Out of all the things you should be legitimately concerned about regarding the Senate confirmation hearings in Washington, DC, today for Judge Kavanaugh & SCOTUS, handshakes and handsigns ought not be among them.
Actual serious constitutional issues are at stake.
— Mark Pitcavage (@egavactip) September 4, 2018
Jared Holt, a research associate at the left-leaning watchdog group Right Wing Watch, agrees. “It could have just been her resting her hand in a way that looked like that,” he said. “I haven’t seen anything that would lead me to believe this was intentionally a troll.”
That’s the gist of it. But there’s a backstory to why the okay gesture is perceived as a hate sign, and the eagerness of some liberals to embrace fake news on the subject is itself revealing. We have, at this point, gotten plenty of signs through actual policy decisions, and concrete connections between Trump staffers and white nationalist activists, that the Trump White House is pursuing a racist agenda. So why do people still want a secret hand signal to prove that the Trump administration is sympathetic to white supremacist goals?
As the ADL’s Pitcavage explained last year, this whole story was fueled, like so much internet nonsense before it, with a 4chan trolling effort.
Back in February 2017, Pitcavage writes, a 4chan user proposed an effort called “Operation O-KKK” in which he and allies would, in the anonymous user’s words, “flood Twitter and other social media websites … claiming that the OK hand sign is a symbol of white supremacy.” Here’s the original 4chan post, as shared by KnowYourMeme:
KnowYourMeme
The choice of the okay symbol for the prank, as KnowYourMeme editor-in-chief Brad Kim explains, was not totally arbitrary; “Sometime during the 2016 United States presidential election,” Kim writes, “Pizza Party Ben and Milo Yiannopoulos began making the gesture together at various events supporting the candidacy of Donald Trump.”
On February 13, 2017, a few weeks before the 4chan post, Jim Hoft and Lucian Wintrich of the alt-right outlet Gateway Pundit made the okay symbol in the White House Press Room. The left-leaning media watchdog Media Matters denounced it as a “hate symbol,” noting that images of alt-right mascot Pepe the Frog sometimes showed the character doing the “okay” sign:
A far bigger blow-up occurred the following April when journalist Emma Roller, then of Splinter, tweeted a photo of alt-right celebrities Cassandra Fairbanks and Mike Cernovich making the okay sign in the White House press room:

To Channers and alt-right loyalists, this was the ultimate proof that the prank had worked: A left-leaning journalist had been fooled into thinking an innocuous hand gesture was a secret sign of deep, racist evil. Especially funny to them was when Roller explained her tweet by referencing a diagram … originating in the 4chan post that launched “Operation O-KKK”:

At first Fairbanks and Cernovich seemed to be having a laugh over the whole situation. Fairbanks told BuzzFeed News’s Joe Bernstein, “There was a troll meme going around saying that it meant white power. But it was a joke because Trump supporters are always being called Nazis even when it isn’t true.” Cernovich told Bernstein that he borrowed the hand gesture from Jay-Z, and from a conspiracy theory alleging that Jay-Z used the gesture as a sign he’s in the Illuminati.
Fairbanks would later purport to take the accusation a bit more seriously, and sued Roller for defamation in federal court. Judge Trevor McFadden of the DC District Court, a Trump appointee, dismissed the lawsuit in an opinion memorably beginning, “Plaintiff Cassandra Fairbanks trolled the web through Twitter …”
Holt at Right Wing Watch said that meanwhile, “people at the ADL and people like me who follow this stuff full-time tried to explain that this is not actually a symbol tied to white supremacy in any way.”
Another iteration of the controversy exploded in December 2017, when the Daily Mail reported that White House intern Jack Breuer had flashed a “known ‘white power’ sign during a photo-op with President Donald Trump.” Here’s the photo in question, from then-Mail reporter Jessica Chasmar:
Breuer strenuously denied the suggestion on Twitter:
In some of our intern pictures, I emulated the OK sign the President sometimes makes. That was foolish. I should have listened more closely to the Commander-in-Chief and given the thumbs up. (1/2)
— Jack Breuer (@jjbreue) December 29, 2017
I’m proud of my Jewish heritage and strongly reject the hateful views associated with racist white power organizations. I would never make common cause with them. (2/2)
— Jack Breuer (@jjbreue) December 29, 2017
Snopes, the fact-checking website, called the accusation against Breuer “unproven,” noting that the only evidence the Mail produced for the suggestion that Breuer intentionally made the sign as a show of alt-right solidarity was an anonymous quote from a fellow White House intern. Even that source conceded, “Jack’s a good kid and is probably doing it as a joke.”
Holt, at Right Wing Watch, said that while it began as a hoax, the symbol’s success as a troll has given it some new meaning in right-wing circles it didn’t have originally. He says intentional use of it falls into two camps. “One is white supremacists making a tongue-in-cheek inside joke to each other,” he said. “Then the larger contingent of people are people who do it in the photos to get a reaction and troll the libs.”
In the former camp, he includes people like Charlottesville rally organizer Jason Kessler; in the latter, folks like Cernovich, an alt-right troll who, while certainly a racist, is “probably more concerned with just trying to make liberals and the #resistance look as bad as humanly possible.”
Zina Bash, the latest conservative ensnared in an okay sign controversy, has a more intellectual pedigree than her predecessors Breuer, Fairbanks, and Cernovich. According to her LinkedIn page, she holds degrees from Harvard College, Harvard Law School, and Penn’s Wharton business school, and she clerked for both Brett Kavanaugh on the DC Circuit (hence her presence at the hearings) and for Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito.
Until recently, she worked in the Trump White House as a special Assistant to the President for regulatory reform, legal and immigration policy. In July, she joined Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s office as a senior counsel.
It seems clear that Fairbanks and Cernovich were using the hand signal to troll the libs, and at least plausible that Breuer, Holt, and Wintrich were as well (the latter two are pretty prominent alt-right racists, but their incident was also before the 4chan hoax began). But was Bash? It’s certainly possible she was exposed to the idea of the troll.
That said, it’s equally if not more plausible that she was replying to a text message. (Some Twitter hand signal detectives argued she can be seen getting an alert on her phone before the hand signal appears.) Or maybe she was signaling to someone watching the livestream; sending an okay signal to a senator or staffer sitting opposite her and Kavanaugh; or just fidgeting with her fingers.
There’s simply no reason, other than an epistemological commitment to assuming the absolute worst of absolutely everyone ever associated with the Trump administration, to believe she did a small hand movement to prove her commitment to white supremacy.
It’s, of course, natural for fake news about the president and his aides to proliferate among their political critics. When I was 14, I really sincerely believed that George W. Bush had snuck in an earpiece so he could be fed answers during his debates with John Kerry, and that the “bulge” in the back of his suit jacket proved this.
This was, of course, nonsense. But Bush really was awful, and really was prosecuting a horrific war killing hundreds of thousands of people and torturing many more. That made ridiculous suggestions, like that Bush had to cheat at televised debates, seem plausible to me (that, plus I was 14 and my brain was small and unformed).
And, of course, fake news about Barack Obama (he’s secretly Kenyan!) and Bill Clinton (he’s a cocaine trafficker!) spread wildly among conservatives during their presidencies.
But in a way, the Zina Bash fake news is stranger, because it seems to confirm something we all already know: the Trump administration contains racists who want to use policy to harm nonwhite people. You don’t need a hand signal to know that.
Take, say, Rosie Gray’s exposé in the Atlantic of Homeland Security staffer Ian M. Smith, who was close with numerous white nationalists and went to a house party advertised as judenfrei (or “free of Jews”). Or take Stephen Miller, the White House domestic policy adviser responsible for the partial implementation of Trump’s promise to ban Muslims from the US and for the policy of separating immigrant families, and who alt-right leader Richard Spencer has described as a friend and ally when they were at Duke together.
Or take, I don’t know, the president: a man who as a candidate promised to ban all Muslims from the US, who calls Elizabeth Warren “Pocahontas,” who said that a Mexican-American judge is unfit to preside over cases involving him, who called Mexican immigrants “rapists,” claimed Muslim-Americans celebrated the 9/11 attacks. And then, after all that, a man who came into office and set about implementing the most anti-immigrant policies in years, slowing housing discrimination law enforcement to a halt, and reorienting the Justice Department away from fighting racial discrimination against black Americans. Oh, and who empathized with neo-Nazis after Charlottesville, and described Haiti and African nations as “shithole” countries, for good measure.
We don’t need to interpret hand signals to know where this administration stands on racism and white supremacy. We know very well where it stands.
