A racist accusation, a botched investigation. Then, decades later, an apology in Boston.
The mayor of Boston formally apologized to two Black men who were wrongfully accused of murdering a pregnant white woman and her unborn child in 1989 – a notorious murder case that sowed decades of distrust between the Boston Police Department and the city's Black community.
"I am so sorry for what you endured," Michelle Wu said in an apology addressed to Willie Bennett and Alan Swanson, at a news conference on Wednesday. "I am so sorry for the pain that you have carried for so many years. What was done to you was unjust, unfair, racist and wrong."
In 1989, Swanson and Bennett were named as suspects in the death of Carol Stuart, whose husband, Charles Stuart, plotted her killing and then accused an unidentified Black man for the murder, sparking what the mayor called a "systemic campaign targeting Black men" based on "a false, racist claim."
Michael Cox, the Boston police commissioner, apologized on behalf of the police department for "the poor investigation, overzealous behavior and, more likely, unconstitutional behavior."
Flanking the speakers were Swanson and members of Bennett's family. The mayor handed them formal apology letters and said the gesture was "just the beginning of a much longer journey of accountability and action."

Happy STS! What's a story or idea that's been living in your phone notes/voice memos/sticky notes posted around your computer for years that you hope to write one day?
Hello from the far future! 😅
Another way of saying I've been gone for a while... but I hope you don't mind! Thank you for your Q!
I would say that there's one story that has been rattling around in my head for a while but haven't gotten around to writing it yet. It's a family drama with magical realism elements...
It chronicles the lives of the members of a family which begins as a closely knit unit, only to be slowly wedged apart by issues that were really always there but ignored. You can only ignore some things for so long...

The way that Lena accepts the mantle of Storyteller even if it's the opposite of everything she ever wanted. In a way, you could see it was the elephant, the black dog haunting her waking moments, the looming, lurking knowledge that there will be a day where her friends and family are dead and gone and she's there, telling their stories to people who have long forgotten their names. If only to remind herself. If only to remind the world...

The Inspector should be aware — twice over — of what it’s like to be the last of his species, given that he believed he’d destroyed Kayaclasch with the Time Wave, only for the Sergeant to actually do it decades later.
So, when Shoop the Boop claimed to be the last of his kind, the Inspector should be a bit suspicious of him.

being in henry's shoes must be so detrimental
like imagine you have this friend and you start this business with him to run a restaurant made to entertain kids and their families. and then, in the blink of an eye, your friend became a child murder. almost with seemingly no reason.

Corners of the Telesto Yuan khilāfah are a paradise while other areas are engulfed in war. When Clans go to war the consequences can be brutal. A trade dispute between two clans lead to a massacre on the planet Periniea. Bombers destroyed the capital and cut a swath of destruction across the temporal zone of the planet. The Golden Hand stepped out of the shadows to mediate the settlement of the conflict, highly favoring the tattered Amorishi Clan over the militarily strong Khinhtanya Clan. The Amorishis were allowed to evacuate many of their people off planet before the Khinhtanya took the mineral rich northern hemisphere for themselves. Surprisingly the leadership of the Khinhtanya slowly began dying off on their newly conquered planet. Accidents, natural causes, and murder claimed the Khinhtanya leadership until a young second-cousin fell into the line of succession. A newly appointed guardian, rumored to be blessed by Imperador Abraham Amal Medeshah himself, stepped in to advise and education the young clan leader. This guardian, Khlyon of Cheroseia, set a new course for the Khinhtanya clan who, decades later, healed the rift with the Amorishis by returning Periniea and absorbing the remnants of the tattered Clan as an elevated tribute-clan within the Khinhtanya family. #sciencefiction #scifi #midjourney #aiartwork #AICreated #dailyart

got a worm nibbling my brain. can someone help me find a piece of obscure media?
webcomic/indie comic from the 2010s. basically a sci-fi short story about a young girl (with red hair?) who was being raised by scientists as part of an experiment. she receives a haircut/has her head shaved, in preparation for her annual brain scan/testing. it is revealed that while her body is human, her "brain" is artificial, made of computer implants throughout her skull and spine. at some point her biological mother (also a scientist on the same campus?) encounters her and is repulsed, viewing her as a machine who has murdered her daughter.
it was very poignant and it bruised my heart and i can NOT find it anywhere

About that one ask where Machete murders everyone. I'm in my fire phase at the moment and thought blue would look good in contrast to Machete's usual red :)

I remember a really bizarre exchange I had on my old Tumblr back in 2015 where I argued with an anon over asks bc I wanted to eat less sugar in my diet so that I'd have less painful acne breakouts. and they took it SUPER personally for whatever reason and I specifically remember a banger line where they said something along the lines of "if you're gonna be the fucking sugar police then im becoming a sugar terrorist" and I still don't know what it means today

i really wish i had the motivation to write rn, because i have an idea for a post-canon Dracula fic where the characters have to deal with world war one. like, how do you even cope with thinking you saved all those lives, only for the entire western world to go to absolute shit just 20-ish years later? if only Bram Stoker had known what was coming.
anyway, i find it so interesting to consider what certain characters would do in that situation.
depending on when he was born, Quincey Jr could be just old enough to enlist or get drafted. or honestly, he might just want to be a hero like his parents, and lie about his age. and let's be real, that boy has some latent vampire powers that would give him an edge.
Jonathan has good survival instincts, an ear for languages, and the ability and willingness to scale sheer walls with a knife between his teeth if necessary. Mina has a really impressive memory for conversations and schedules, a love of technology, experience resisting what is essentially supernatural interrogation, and probably some vampire side effects of her own. both of them know shorthand and have plenty of experience with life or death situations. they would kick ass as spies and wireless operators.
Jack and Van Helsing would have to cease the medical malpractice to be actual army doctors. maybe learn about shell shock and call up Jonathan about that old "brain fever" diagnosis of his.
and what would Arthur even do? what did lords do during WW1? try to keep his friends out of harm's way? use his seat in government to try and end the war? grapple with the fact that lordships are falling out of favour and the world is moving on into a modern era without him?
i just find it fun to ponder.

in the hunger game renaissance era and beyond shocked that the love triangle was even a thing with how obvious it is that katniss loves peeta. literally in thg, katniss says the only person she is certain that she loves in the world is prim after talking with gale. in mj, she says she turns to haymitch for comfort because he is the person that loves peeta too.

I’ve been a part of IRL queer and trans communities for almost 15 years, and I’ve watched every single one those remorselessly communities chew up and spit out transfems. None of them ever having been able to keep a transfem around for more than a year without getting a “bad vibe.” They’ve all kicked people with no other safety net to the curb, completely cutting them off from any of the benefits of an accepting community. Every transfem I know is either dead or living in poverty with no lifeline besides, perhaps, an extremely unhealthy tgirl skyrim house. Trans guys are just as quick to engage in this type of behavior as cis people! It’s like. Insane to me that I’m getting called delusional over this, I’ve watched this exact thing play out dozens of times. It’s happened to me and every transfem I’ve ever known IRL multiple times. Like. Everyone knows about the tranny hovels. Where do you think that comes from if not from the community widely excluding and discriminating against us? That’s not a situation that happens unless you have literally no where else to go. How do you think we would end up in such uniquely precarious situations if there were not power to leverage over us?
