“Help us to be the always hopeful gardeners of the spirit who know that without darkness nothing comes to birth, as without light nothing flowers.” ~ May Sarton Rejoice in hope; be patient in affliction; be persistent in prayer. – Romans 12:12 Boulder Dam by May Sarton Imagine it in terms of water first: In Arizona, California, there will be no thirst. The sterile desert suddenly made…

This is longer than most of the music that I share here, but it’s worth listening to.  All too often, we tend to separate composers into somewhat arbitrary categories.  There are a lot of them, but the binary at hand is the division between “serious composer” and “liturgical composer.”  We tend to put more of a divide between these categories than there really needs to be -- after all, a large portion of Bach’s work was done for liturgical use, and all sorts of “serious composers” also wrote masses or religious pieces.  We just refer to those either by their titles (you could grow up believing that a Mass was simply a musical form like a Symphony or an Opera or a String Quartet) or think of these men -- and they are mostly men -- as Serious Composers who happened to write some liturgical music.  Not like those Lesser Composers who just wrote hymn tunes or other songs for worship.
Some Early American tunesmiths, like William Billings, Daniel Read, Oliver Holden, Supply Belcher, Stephen Jenks, and Justin Morgan, are starting to get the Serious Composer treatment, as part of the First New England School.  Here, Debbie Friedman z”l, gets a similar treatment.  A number of her famous melodies -- see how many you can identify and sing along with! -- have been arranged into an orchestral suite, and the effect is really lovely.  Who would have thought that moving “Lechi Lach” or the Havdalah tune out of the synagogue and into the concert hall could be so affecting?  Absolutely worth a listen, and worth reconsidering how we think about the art of musical composition.

N.B. woman identified as pedestrian struck and killed in Toronto area
A woman who was struck and killed in a hit-and-run collision in the Toronto area last week has been identified as a 63-year-old New Brunswick woman.
Debbie Graves was walking on the north sidewalk of York Mills Road, west of Don Mills Road, in North York around 11 p.m. on Oct. 4 when a vehicle left the roadway and mounted the curb, striking her.
Police say the driver and vehicle failed to remain at the scene of the collision.
Graves was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to her obituary, the Riverview, N.B. woman was born in Moncton and attended Acadia University and Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia.
“She was very creative and loved gardening, sewing, completing "projects" and above all she was a devoted wife and mother,” her obituary reads. “She was at her happiest during time spent with her family.”
Graves worked at Numeris, a broadcast audience research firm.
“The Numeris family was shocked and saddened to learn this tragic news,” Numeris communications director Tom Jenks told CP24 on Tuesday. “Debbie Graves was an incredibly valued member of our team and we will miss her greatly. This is an ongoing police investigation that we hope is resolved quickly.”
The suspect’s vehicle is described as a blue 2014-2016 Nissan Rogue. Police say it would have sustained damage to the right front headlight and fog light area. It was last seen headed west on York Mills Road.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Toronto Police Service.
