Acclaimed British author, Dave Jeffery returns us to the captivating, dark and thought provoking world of A Quiet Apocalypse with the 4th book in the series called TRIBUNaL to be released via Demain Publishing on the 30th of June, 2022. Almost as dark and depressing as the scenarios called up in the A Quiet Apocalypse series is the fact that TRIBUNaL is set to be the end of the series. All good…

Setting Out Alone (1965) -
All Sections | Next Section
Tumblr media
“When Alan left ‘The Animals’, it was the worst night of my life. It compares with nights I remember, when deep and long love affairs have to end (and I’ve had one or two) … you get over them … it takes a long time and you never quite forget.” - Eric Burdon, The Price to Play sleevenote, 1966.
Oh, don’t you worry. We’ll get to that very soon.
Sadly, yes, things weren’t meant to last. Alan suddenly failed to show up to a concert in Basingstoke on April 27th, 1965, and also didn’t board a plane bound for Sweden with his band just a couple of days later. Alan had quit the Animals, with young keyboardist Mickey Gallagher replacing him for the Scandinavian tour, and Dave Rowberry replacing him permanently once they returned.
So, why did Alan leave the Animals?
For several reasons… depending on who you ask. For example, all of the Animals seem to have a very cynical explanation, with Chas having it in his mind that Alan had received his first check for “Rising Sun” just a few days prior and decided to dip once he did (he, Michael Jefferies, and Alan all shared a flat, which is how he knew this). The other Animals, as well as biographers, seem to share this sentiment, while also believing that creative differences and friction with Eric compelled him to leave. And these are two perspectives that are… honestly really hard for me to believe entirely. The royalty check could’ve just been a coincidence, and Chas has only mentioned it once, and the “tension with Eric” has been going on literally since 1958 and, as previously mentioned, it only seemed to be detrimental when the two were being forced to work together under pressure. On so many other fronts (such as disagreeing with Mickie about song choice and preferred instruments), the two had a similar thought process and, as you will see in some upcoming articles, it persisted for years. Of course, maybe this “tension with Eric” really was eating away at Alan in this environment, but this would honestly be less because of their relationship and more attributed to how much of a stressful sweatshop the industry was.
For Alan, however, the reasoning went a lot deeper. His departure is most heavily traced back to his fear of flying, which he was intensely afraid of. I don’t really think I’ve done his flying-fear justice here, mostly because it isn’t relevant to the meat of the relationship at hand… but yeah, Alan was terrified of flying, literally drinking a bottle of vodka before flights in order to be inebriated and somewhat unconscious before they took off. This nervousness regarding something he already had a phobia of was hard enough, but it didn’t help that Alan is just… a deeply troubled man. I mentioned this way at the beginning, but Alan obviously deals with a lot of inner-demons and mental struggles. This wasn’t necessarily caused by the non-stop touring and exhaustion, it’s just how Alan is. He’s always been moody and distant, keeping to himself, reading in hotel rooms instead of attending parties, wanting to be in his flat alone and not with other people, not having (or perhaps not seeking out) many friends, and wanting time with those few friends (like Eric) to be one-on-one. The popstar lifestyle already wasn’t for him, and it didn’t help that he was already battling with depression and the life he was leading just exemplified his biggest fears and probably put him in many scarring circumstances. It caused him to turn to alcohol as a coping mechanism, which had a detrimental effect on his already fragile health and mental state.
Simply put, he couldn’t take it much longer. So he quit.
And yeah, it wasn’t really the best look, especially since he turned around and started gathering musicians for the Alan Price Set that summer… but it should be mentioned that the turn-around wasn’t immediate, and it took almost five months for the Set to be fully formed and performing. Heck, the entire decision of leaving was already such a big decision for him… leaving the security of something he had not only been a part of for almost three years at this point, but something he built. He knew that the sudden nature of his decision meant that the others would be caught completely off-guard… especially the only one he claims that he felt any sort of “fellowship” with. It wasn’t a decision made lightly, I’m sure, despite interviews where Alan tries to put on a brave face and act like he had no regrets.
Because he did. And we have proof.
Tumblr media
Also, on a lighter note, this picture of the Animals (from the June 26th issue of Fabulous) after they got off their plane in Sweden makes me laugh so much. Like… something’s clearly missing. 😐
Separation Anxiety -
To usher us into Alan and Eric’s reactions to Alan’s departure, here’s a little nugget that shattered my heart into a million pieces when I read it for the first time:
“Flying cost me so much in nervous energy. I just couldn’t surmount the problem. I’d already brought up the subject of leaving the group with Eric, but he’d told me that if I left he’d leave, too.” - Alan Price, RAVE, January 1967. (p. 19)
Alan… you’re really going to drop an “Eric told me if I left, he would leave, too” on me like that?? Right after my tangent about Mickie Most considering you two a unit that had to be consulted and approached together??
That simple sentence alone is already a lot to unpack and laces their relationship with even more unbridled affection, but it’s also obvious that, as moved as Alan was, he didn’t want Eric to leave the group with him.
“He said that he was sorry but he just couldn’t force himself on the plane. He also admitted that having decided not to go he expected Eric to remain, too. Without Eric, he knew we would never have been able to appear.” - Hilton Valentine, NME, May 28th, 1965 (p. 9).
Alan wanted the band to go on, for all of their sakes. He knew and accepted the fact that Eric was the face and the draw of the band - without him, the Animals couldn’t exist in any capacity. I’m not sure if he convinced Eric not to leave at some point… or if Alan’s sudden departure just put Eric in a sticky situation that forced him to choose, and he evidently chose the band, but still. If it was the latter… yeah, still not at all a good look for Alan or a fair choice he left for Eric, but he really thought he was making the best choice for everyone. For his mental health, for Eric’s career, and for the rest of the band.
However, both Alan and Eric’s reactions to the actual departure… they make me weep openly. Daily.
Looking Back -
Time to gush about Dont Look Back, teehee.
Here’s a full upload of the movie, shhh: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNIQznF6NkQ
Alright, in all seriousness, I won’t go into too much of a tangent about the cinematic masterpiece that is Dont Look Back, but considering we’re talking about Alan Price’s role in this film… it’s not going to be short. Especially since the context here will further supplement Eric’s perspective.
After Alan left the Animals in late-April of 1965, he ended up hanging out with Bob Dylan and his entourage when they arrived in England on April 29th, for Bob’s tour of the country throughout May. Most of the tour was filmed by director D.A. Pennbaker, released in 1967 as a documentary called Dont Look Back. The film is in the cinéma vérité style, the footage undoctored besides a few audio clean-ups here and there, and Pennebaker had a camera rolling during most of Bob’s travels around England. Fun fact: it’s my favorite movie ever. Yes, Alan’s a huge part of that, but it’s honestly just a fun time all around if you want a fly-on-the-wall perspective of the 60’s music scene, especially Bob Dylan in particular. Also, Donovan’s in the movie, which instantly makes it 11/10 (#bonovanforever).
Back to Alan, it honestly really puzzles me as to why Alan joined the entourage, because he doesn’t particularly enjoy being at frequent social gatherings, especially during this time when he was allegedly so tired. However, it should be noted that Alan adopts a very, very different personality when under the influence of alcohol, which he was drinking in copious amounts at this time. That moodiness and desire for distance is replaced by drunken antics; a shield, no doubt, but tapping a bit into the sociability and silliness Alan seems to harbor, deep down (and that Eric had mentioned a few times prior). It’s such a contrast from his usual personality that, upon watching Dont Look Back for the first time, I thought Alan was always this extroverted… how wrong I was. The handful of extended “cameos” he has in the movie and deleted scenes (I say “cameos'' with quotations because he’s honestly an integral secondary “character” to the movie, but I digress) make it seem like he’s a cheery person, but he also always carries a bottle of alcohol in his hand.
So, not only was Alan using alcohol to dampen his emotions after leaving the band, but I also believe that Alan was keeping himself around the Bob Squad in order to keep himself safe. This is purely speculatory, but I think Alan knew that if he just stayed in Newcastle for the next month, shut inside his parents’ flat without contact with anyone, he would drive himself insane; no exaggeration. Not to mention, potentially drink too much (Eric even talks about, in his first autobiography, how Alan suffered with DTs and had even found him spilled out on bathroom floors, before). I see people cynically comment on Alan’s appearance in Dont Look Back and consider him a drunk hanger-on, nothing more (a sentiment spread by the Animals and biographers, no doubt)… and you know what, maybe he somewhat was. But I definitely don’t think Alan was there to leverage himself in any way, or just feel good about rubbing elbows with a bunch of famous musicians. He “hung on” because there was really nowhere else to go - most of his closest friends were busy, one of which was the one who was the most betrayed by his actions and countries away at the time. I think some people also forget that Alan actually knew Bob and most of his entourage (in particular, Joan Baez, Bob Neuwirth, and Albert Grossman) because the Animals had met them in New York back in ‘64. They knew Alan and weren’t  letting him wobble along beside them just because they pitied him. Not to mention, I’m sure Alan felt the presence of the camera and thus didn’t want to be around it more than he had to sometimes… though, that didn’t mean some raw emotions weren’t captured when it was at the back of his mind. Alan is vulnerable throughout this film; silly, but vulnerable.
Agh, anyway, this isn’t meant to be an analysis of Alan’s presence in Dont Look Back (though, I could go on and on about it if I wanted to :pensive:). I feel the most important context for how he behaves in the film, though, is the vulnerability he displays, as well as what he’s so distraught about and trying to hide under a haze of alcohol. It’s the regret about leaving the band the way that he did, and the lack of security he feels now that he’s gone… but, let’s face it, he was leaving friends behind, at the end of the day. Three friends who he wasn’t too close to, granted, but friends nonetheless, with whom he had spent every day of the past (two?) years. And one other particular friend - the only one he considered he had a “fellowship” with. The one he says he shared a “common soul” with…
Around the 57:00 mark of Dont Look Back, it catches up with Alan, though. He’s hanging out backstage in Newcastle with the Bob Squad before Bob’s concert there, making everyone laugh with impersonations of other British stars, and on the outside, having a great time. That is until Bob interjects with an innocent question that cuts deep:
“Hey, was the Animals lookin’ for a piano player now?”
“Well, they’ve got one. There’s a good friend of mine going to go in, play around. For good, you know.”
“Yeah… Aren’t you playin’ with them no more?”
“No. I guess not. It’s alright, it just happens, you know.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the face Alan makes afterwards… Shame? Embarrassment? Defeat? Sadness? Exhaustion? Confusion? Regret? All of the above… not to mention, how scorned he looks. Heartbroken… because I’m sure he had no idea, at the time, if one of his closest friends hated him or not. Leaving him in the dust, after he had told Alan he’d be leaving with him.
See what I’m referring to, with those little bits of context here and there making things so much more meaningful? I mean, back when I first saw this scene, I already knew something was up, based on Alan’s reaction. He was radiating “break-up” vibes, in more ways than one. But now that I know… it hurts even more. Heck, it was this scene that actually made me want to learn more about Alan and the Animals (and who in particular Alan seemed so torn up about)... and look where we are now.
And we haven’t even talked about Eric yet.
Bad Taste -
As raw as Alan’s reaction in the immediate aftermath was, Eric’s perspective makes it clear that he was caught off-guard, as well as shattered by Alan’s departure, as tough as he tries to make himself sound.
“Bob Dylan came into town and Bob drew a lot of interest and a lot of fans and a lot of groupies around him. And I remember getting a phone call from Alan. When he was supposed to be at a gig, you know?
‘Where are ya?’
“I’m out on the road with Bob.’
‘Ay, great stuff! When are you going to come down?’
‘Oh, I don’t know, man… I’m getting some really heavy input here…’
‘Well, so are we, you know, because we ain’t got a piano player.’
And then the next thing, we were off to Sweden, and no Alan. Supposedly having a nervous breakdown because he couldn’t fly or whatever.” - Eric Burdon, BBC Interview (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lF6ApLs9ffo)
This first little excerpt from Eric definitely seems like he’s trying to remain indifferent, outside of the inconvenience Alan’s absence causes. Keep a pin in the frequent mentions of Bob Dylan, going forward, though… It’s interesting how Eric’s talk of Alan leaving always mentions Bob.
“Bob Dylan came to London, which was quite an event. He had everyone’s ear and was surrounded by rock stars, newspaper people, and the intelligentsia of London. Alan Price was one of those seduced by Dylan’s spell. Suddenly, we had no keyboard player, at a time when the Animals were booked for Sweden. Several stories made the rounds - he’d developed a fear of flying and would no longer tour; he wanted to do his own thing. It was only when I saw the documentary Dont Look Back years later that I saw what happened. There was Alan, sitting around serenading Bob backstage somewhere, with a vodka in one hand and an orange juice in the other, a trick he’d learned from Carl Perkins. Bob asks him, ‘Hey, where’s your band, man?” Alan’s answer is unintelligible.
…It was doubly frustrating that Alan disappeared just as he and I were beginning our writing career. We were just starting to sit down around the piano, doing stuff like ‘Inside-Looking Out’ and ‘I’m Crying’. Alan and I were just starting to stretch out and learn to work together like Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.” - Eric Burdon, Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood, 2001 (p. 63).
“Seduced by Dylan’s spell”, “serenading Bob backstage somewhere”... interesting choice of words, Eric. That vodka and orange juice comment also gets me, because one of the aforementioned Eric-finding-Alan-spilled-out-in-a-bathroom moments from his first autobiography featured empty bottles of vodka and orange juice by Alan’s side. Obviously, a worrying sight for Eric. Also, he’s seen Dont Look Back, which in itself must have been enlightening.
And, of course, that hint of wistfulness, talking about beginning to songwrite together and the opportunity that was lost. Despite this particular autobiography being the more cynical from the pair Eric has written, this is definitely the most affectionate he is regarding Alan. I love the phrase “learn to work together”, which is Eric acknowledging that they had differences, but were actively meeting each other for a time. His mentioning of “Inside-Looking Out” is a little odd, though, since that song wouldn’t be recorded until January of 1966 and is credited to Eric and Chas instead. Still, if an early prototype had been written between Alan and Eric… yes, please. It’s legitimately in my top three original Animals songs.
Alright, time for the excerpt that shatters my heart:
“I recall a phone call from Alan Price somewhere along the line. ‘Hey, nice of you to call.’
The voice crackled back at me. ‘Yeah, I’m out on the road with Bob Dylan like. I thought it would be good for me head. The band was screwing me up, all the drinking and traveling. I couldn’t stand it. I hope you understand.’
‘Oh, sure, I understand,’ I said. ‘Sure.’ I just felt embarrassed. I didn’t know what to say. He has little more to add. I guess he just wanted to impress me that he was still swimming in the best musical circles.
‘Yeah, well give my regards to Bob Dylan. What are you doing, hanging out or touring with him, or what?”
‘Yeah. I think I’ll go round with him for a while. You know what I mean?’ He didn’t let much go. He never did.” - Eric Burdon, I Used to Be an Animal, but I’m All Right Now, 1986 (p. 135-36).
Sort-of an alternate version of the conversation he described in the radio interview, but the same sentiment. Alan, awkward and unsure of what to say, reaching out to Eric, and Eric unsure of how to react or what to say either (the “he didn’t let much go | he never did” gets me). And again, revolving around Bob.
This gets into a bit of speculation, but also in Eric’s first autobiography, he describes his personal relationship with Bob to never be that close; that they “never connected”, attributing it to how much of an enigma he is. Which is fair, yet I can’t help but wonder if Eric’s view of Bob, especially in immediate and later hindsight, is colored by him viewing Bob as “the guy who took Alan away”. It’s just interesting that the other Animals never seem to mention Bob when talking about Alan leaving, and biographers mention him very rarely, but in all three of Eric’s primary accounts, Bob seems to be framed as the “thing” that pulled Alan away from the band for good.
So we have Alan making expressions that suggest he’s going through a break-up, and Eric acting like Bob Dylan stole his boyfriend. Why are they like this? /hj 😐
Also, Eric’s quote from the sleevenote for The Price to Play…
“When Alan left ‘The Animals’, it was the worst night of my life. It compares with nights I remember, when deep and long love affairs have to end (and I’ve had one or two) … you get over them … it takes a long time and you never quite forget.” - Eric Burdon, The Price to Play sleevenote, 1966.
I’ll go into this more once I talk about the full note Eric wrote for him (because yes, he really did), but… yeah. Yeah. Literally compared their relationship to a “deep and long love affair”. These two… these two, man.

Last book I...
bought — Another Life: Lawrence After Arabia by Andrew R.B.Simpson. Currently reading. Very much enjoying puttering about in speedboats with Later Years T.E. I’m oddly fascinated by this period of his life.
borrowed — Hero: The Life and Legend of Lawrence of Arabia by Michael Korda. Borrowed from the Internet Archive to search for a quote from Bob Lawrence, but oddly it seems not to be there. Not a massive fan of this one.
was gifted — People generally know not to buy me books. Or most stuff that exists in physical form. A friend did give me a book voucher last birthday but I’m not sure what I bought with it. Probably Sherlock Holmes vs. Zombies. Money well spent, Herbert!
gave/lent to someone — In a fit of extreme minimalism I donated most of my books to a charity store two years ago. I regret nothing.
started — Another Life...
finished — Why Don’t We Learn From History? by B.H. Liddell Hart. Interesting long essay on war and dictatorship by early T.E. Lawrence biographer.
gave five stars — Stiff Upper Lips: Secrets, Crimes and the Schooling of a Ruling Class by Alex Renton. An excellent if at times distressing read on the culture of abuse and cover ups in British boarding schools.
gave two stars —Roger Waters: The Man Behind The Wall by Dave Thompson. This was a while ago, but I remember the style being sensationalist and the content nothing I hadn’t read in better books.
didn’t finish — Carte Blanche by Jeffery Deaver. Updated, grounded James Bond adventure was going so well until the cartoonishly sinister villain was introduced. It had a good M though.
Is it cheating/an unforgiveable breach of etiquette not to tag anyone else? Perhaps I will later.

Mama Goes To War Verse
Mary Colleen Murphy - 36 year old single mother raising a newly minted head strong fiercely independent 18 year old daughter.
Sarah Marie Murphy - 18 year old girl from a very small town who wants more of the world. She adores her mother and grandparents but don't they know there's more to the world than their hometown?
Dave Sullivan - 41 year old father to Sarah Murphy. A fisherman by trade he's a college educated draftsman. He sends a check each month and on Sarah's birthday, he's just busy.
Jeffery Eugene Lipsinski - 19 year old senior from Copperline High. Has his sights dead set on Sarah Murphy. He's unsure what'll happen but he hopes she won't be like the last girl...Stacy...Tracy...what what her name?
Macey Finch - 18 year old senior from Copperline High, head of the Give Back Club Volunteer program at the school and from a very nice family. Missing one week before the spring fling.

UnderSwitch Main Post
UnderSwitch is an UnderTale AU where Frisk is young and super smart for her age. She also has trauma and ptsd because of her parents. In Chapter 1, she wears an astronaut helmet because the air on the Surface is dirty and makes it really hard for her to breathe, but the air in the Underground is much cleaner.
SIDE NOTE: I'm writing this while playing a True Pacifist Run on Undertale, so when I don't update this for a while, that means i haven't had a chance to play Undertale in a while.
There are a small number of characters and other stuff that are switched with each other, hence the "Switch" part of the name. Here they are:
Chara <--> Asriel (Flowey Chara still has the pink spots on his cheeks)
Sans <--> Papyrus
Undyne <--> Alphys
Grillby <--> MTT (MTT doesn't have his robot body, and instead wears a bowtie and tophat)
Nice Cream <--> Burgerpants
The color orange <--> The color golden
orange (now golden) attacks <--> blue attacks
Gaster <--> Riverperson
Some characters have had their names changed. Here they are:
Asgore -> Ezraan
Toriel -> Hera
Mad Dummy -> Jerome
MTT -> Mettablook
Grillby -> Grillson
Gerson -> Gerald
Burgerpants -> Burgman
Bob (the temmie) -> Greg
Dummy in the RUINS -> Jeffery (He talks now)
Riverperson -> Dr. R.P. Guestor
Bunny at the Snowdin shop -> Sunny
Nice Cream Guy -> Dave
Ask Boxes that are currently open (If a name is crossed out, then their ask box is closed):
Frisk
Flowey
Hera
Papyrus the skeleton
The Excellent Sans
Burgman
Gaster
Asriel
Mettablook
Sunny
Jeffery
Napstablook
Alphys
Until further notice, all roleplay asks will not be answered.

100 Tourney Event Hall Lore Masterpost
A thing for the Event Hall lore for the "100 Cooldude Tourney".
Beware: Long post
Event Hall: Beginning of construction
Opening of the Brackets + chronological events below the cut
Closing of Brackets, Vendetta is shot in the foot. Dave is added, FAITHLESS DUST and DESPERATION Discord submissions are revealed.
Round 1:
Tumblr media
Surprise Assassin
Tumblr media
(We don't talk about the first take)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The character's entrances. Sometimes I added onto them to try and get a feel for the character, sometimes I didn't. Or there was nothing else to say. I tried to put them in chronological order.
---
Silhouette:
Silo ends up kicking the door open as streamers of light go off from two seeming 'speakers.'
"Your winner has arrived!" Silo would announce, striking a pose. A few moments would pass and the lights as well as his pose casually dropped. It seems he was the first to arrive, and the person at the desk looked unamused. Silo abruptly tapped something on his gloves, the 'speakers' turning into two small 'gaster blasters' as he strolled to the desk to sign in.
"Why hello there.... Did everyone forget to show up or do I win?" The desk clerk looks unamused, but gives him a slot. He gave a dashing smile and thanks to the desk clerk, who just rolled their eyes. He then turned to the right, sitting down on one of the comfy chairs as he took out his phone, the facade dropping. Although he seemed to just be biding time, the phone also was scanning the area for any power sources or important building materials... Hey, if he didn't win he wanted to at least take something from here!
-
Pie:
Entirely forget it's his turn to speak and sit in the crowd of people and wonder who's up next.
addition to Pie:
He sits in the common room next to a potted plant and a stack of old, worn, classical stories. He picks one up that has an interesting cover, and tries to not make eye-contact with anyone.
-
Soulthirst:
He's gonna nervously go get something to eat, but he ain't got no money, so it's gonna be very awkward and it'll finish with a shrug and an (oh well hehe-)
addition to Soulthirst:
The vendors are blank-- seeming to be stand-ins for people more than anything. They simply hand him whatever food and drink he decides to ask for, monotonously informing him that the food here is free of charge. Sans is able to find a shaded bench behind a generic taco stand, and is able to eat in peace.
-
Jeffery:
Grimaces at the common room (doesn’t like company) and goes outside to ask the vendors for bacon bits discreetly.
addition to Jeffery:
The blank figure at the salad stand hands him a salad with a generous helping of bacon bits on the side. He makes his way to a shaded bench under a tree with pink blossoms, free to enjoy his spoils away from prying eyes.
-
DezRat:
Throws up in the common room, staggering from his latest bottle of shampoo and radioactive goo, and passes out in the middle of the stage before the show even began.
addition to DezRat:
Two blank figures collect him from the stage and carry him back into the common room. They set him down away from the other contestants and leave him with a puke trashcan that never gets full. They attempt to clean up the splotches he inevitably left on the stage-- and they do --but the wood now glows a sickly green in places.
-
addition to Silo:
Unfortunately, the only thing his phone is able to pick up is the lingering radiation after the Dezrat incident. He does, however, notice something about the event hall. It's new. He can smell the fresh paint on the walls, and the wooden floor barely looks a day old. Knowing how recently this building was constructed, he knows that there's likely still two-by-fours and bags of concrete around, but tactfully hidden out of sight.
-
Silver:
Sighs in disbelief and doesn't buy anything
-
Mugg:
Mugg muttered a quick thank-you to the figure at the registry, trying not to stare at their unnervingly featureless body. He wandered off into the hall, getting his bearings.. Ugh, he had forgotten how much he disliked making speeches. As far as he remembered, the last one he did was for his adopted cousin's wedding way back when... Man, that one didn't land. He eyed the stage from a distance, fidgeting with the folded-up receipt that held the entirety of his speech notes in his pocket. At least this didn't look all that formal. He took a deep breath and moved on-- he needed to find out what he had to do from here. Being late was only going to make things worse.
Ten minutes of hunting for any sort of order to this event and not a hint was to be found. Typically he would've asked the person at the registry in a situation like this, but he wasn't sure he wanted to look at that blank, empty face one more time. Mugg grumbled to himself, stuffing his hands into his pants-pockets. At least he'd found a couple of people who actually *did* have faces. Could those be the other contestants..? They didn't seem to be in any rush to give their speeches. He probably had some time to kill.. if they weren't as confused as he was. He decided to grab a bite to eat while he waited-- it would help with his nerves anyways. He stepped outside and took a minute to peruse his options. ...Oh, great. The vendors at the trucks were just as featureless as the figure at the registry. What was up with this place? Why'd he let himself get talked into this..? He did his best to shake off the unease and brazenly approached one of the trucks, hastily ordering fries and a soda while trying to look at the vendor as little as possible. The speed of the order caught him off guard, not to mention the fact it was free. Eh, he wasn't complaining. Who knew what currency they used in this universe, anyways-- it was usually some iteration of "gold" similar enough that he could swap it between universes, but you never know when you'll be thrown a curveball. He thanked the vendor and scouted around for a place to sit. He spied some benches tucked away behind the wall of trucks.. oh hey, someone was already there. It was another faced person, hunched over some food of his own. He looked antsy. Mugg saw no problem with getting friendly with the other contestants, he'd be happy to hear a voice more authentic than the painfully generic ones of the people maintaining this event. He walked over casually to the person on the bench, giving him a friendly, albeit crooked smile. "Hey there. Got room for one more?"
-
DESPERATION:
(I) *Kill whoever's in the room with me.
-
FAITHLESS DUST:
He’d be utterly confused.
-
Dave:
Dave closes his word-search book and tugs a blank Tournament form out of the nearby stack.
He tries to not let the apathy show on his face, but fails miserably.
"Hello, welcome to the Event Hall. Please sign this form, and I'll give you your lot number."
"--"
"Yes sir, that is a required question."
"--"
"No."
"--"
"No sir, I don't know why."
"--"
"I'm sorry sir, I didn't-- no, I didn't write this, the boss did.
"--"
"No."
"--"
"Technically. Alright, here's your lot number, please enjoy your time here."
-
Merch:
Merch makes his way into the hastily thrown together Event Hall. He was "late", but Senze had recommended him to enter this silly little tournament anyway. Something about the head of the Tournament requesting him specifically…?
Odd.
But who was he, Papyrus Underfell Cavern, to throw away a perfectly good opportunity to make inter-universe connections (safely, this time)?
He registers with the blank figure at the counter (Dave). Afterwards, he makes his way outside, fully intending to introduce himself to the vendors here and find some new stock. He is out of luck, however. These blank people seem to have no identity, no personality, and no real business. It was like they weren't even real people.
Unnerving-- but what should he have expected? This is a pocket world beyond even the Undertale Multiverse, after all. It had to be strange.
He obtains a bowl of borscht with sour cream from a Slavic food truck and made his way inside and into the lobby, narrowly dodging Desperation Sans's sudden assassination attempt. He flees into the Common Room, avoiding certain death taking a seat beside a potted plant and some books. A square, pulsing barrier forms between the Common Room and the Lobby, halting Desperation's murder attempt.
Ah, this isn't a Common Room-- this is a Living Room!
-
Assassin:
they enter most situations casually.
neatly signs the register and join because “competitions are fun!” then proceed to order a small lasagna in an aluminum tray. Eating it properly and sitting patiently down in the common room, a gleeful smile across their face as they await and see what happens
---
This place has been rotating in my head like a rotisserie chicken-- kinda wish I could've found a way to have made it more of a real story, though. Something interactive, a place to explore. I think that'd've been neat. Eh, another time.
