He is 17 years old, already a MASTERMIND and a Professional Gamer. Interview: Fionn O’Shea, Star of Irish LGBTQ Drama ‘Handsome Devil’

At a cloistered boarding school in Ireland, Ned (Fionn O’Shea), the bullied outsider, and Conor (Nicholas Galitzine), a transfer student and star athlete, are forced to room together. Conor is drafted into the senior rugby team, whose actions dominate life at this sports-obsessed school. Ned and Conor take an instant dislike to each other, and seem destined to remain enemies until an English teacher, Mr. Sherry (Andrew Scott), begins to drill into them the value of finding one’s own voice. But this lesson isn’t appreciated by everyone at the school, certainly not the rugby coach, Pascal (Moe Dunford), who has his own agenda, and who harbors some deep suspicions about Sherry. In his first lead role, Fionn O’Shea (The Siege of Jadotville and the upcoming The Aftermath with Keira Knightley and Alexander Skarsgard), gives a star-making performance as Ned. I spoke to the talented Irish actor about his experience making John Butler’s Handsome Devil.

Danny Miller: I was so moved by your performance as Ned and I appreciated the fact that there were things we didn’t know about him. Unlike some of the other characters, Ned’s own sexuality remains fairly ambiguous in the film.

Fionn O’Shea: Yeah, definitely. I think that these days people are a lot more comfortable with the idea of ambiguity when it comes to a person’s sexuality so it wasn’t something we felt we needed to explain. But we definitely talked a lot about Ned’s back story during rehearsals and on set. John Butler is such a great writer and director, he really understood these characters and he was such a joy to work with.

It’s ultimately a different kind of “coming out” story than we’re used to seeing, especially at a posh boarding school. I wonder if this film were made even ten years ago if the scene in which the rugby players show support for their teammate would have gone the same way. Do you think that scene was a kind of wishful thinking or do you think things are really changing in that regard?

Oh, I think things are really changing. That’s not to say that there isn’t still a lot of homophobia in school settings, of course there is, but it’s definitely different than it used to be. Look at the passage of the marriage equality vote in Ireland, that was so inspirational for everyone, especially kids in school who are struggling with their identities — that was a very powerful message to send to them. On the other hand, you don’t want to fall into the trap of saying, “Well, that passed so I guess we don’t have any more issues with gay people.” It’s still really hard for LGBTQ kids growing up today, no question about it. But I don’t think that scene was just wishful thinking, I think that could definitely happen today.

Whenever I see a film set in that kind of a boys’ boarding school, I grit my teeth and wait for the bullying to start. But I thought the depiction of that seemed a lot more realistic in this movie, I was glad it didn’t go to extreme Lord of the Flies-like lengths!

I think the way John showed it in this film, the bullying was more psychological than physical. In some ways that hurts even more. I went to a school like the one you see in the movie but my experience was nothing like Ned’s — I actually had a great time. But I had friends who had experiences like Ned’s, for sure.

The English teacher played by Andrew Scott reminded me of how one great teacher can make all the difference in the lives of students struggling in school. Did you have anyone like Mr. Sherry in your experience?

That’s really the dream teacher, isn’t it? I did have one teacher that was quite like that, who’s sadly passed away now, but he was a really inspirational person for me, such a lovely man. But John had a teacher very much like Mr. Sherry. I thought Andrew played him so beautifully. He’s just incredible in everything he does. Sherlock Holmes as well, and now his production of Hamlet with Jessica Brown Findlay has just moved to the West End, I can’t wait to see it.

Back in the day, agents and managers would discourage the actors they worked with from playing a gay person or even from appearing in movies that touch on LGBTQ issues. Do you think we’re finally past that stage?

I certainly hope that’s a thing of the past. I talked to John and Andrew about it and they agreed that it’s not at all like it used to be. For one thing, I think today we accept that someone’s sexuality is a part of their identity, but it’s not the whole thing.

I was so invested in your portrayal of Ned that I really cringed during the scene in which he betrays his friend. Was that a hard scene to shoot?

Oh my God, I cringe every time I see it! It’s so hard for me to watch that scene to this day, I’m always squirming in my seat. It actually was pretty difficult to shoot but more because of the number of extras we had in that scene — just corralling them all together was a challenge. And then we’d break for lunch and out of about a 100 extras, 85 of them would come back with their jumpers ripped in half! In terms of my performance, I was a lot more nervous about the singing I had to do for the concert scene, that was really nerve-wracking.

I bet. We see Ned singing quite well early on when he’s rehearsing with Conor, was it hard to have to sing badly later in the film?

That’s very generous of you to say that I ever sang well! (Laughs.) I definitely don’t have a record deal coming off the back of this film. Nick, on the other hand, is a really talented singer and guitar player. I’m not the worst singer in the world but my no means the best. When we rehearsed it beforehand, John kept saying, “Hmm, that sounds little too good, let’s put your part higher.” He kept making it higher and higher until it was at the point where it was impossible to sing it properly. So I wasn’t actually trying to sing badly, it just kind of came naturally!

In general, are you okay with watching yourself on the screen?

The first time I watched this film it was a total blur. I remember thinking everyone else was good but I hadn’t a clue as to how I came across. I’ve seen the film 13 times now so I’m pretty comfortable watching it at this point, but yeah, it can be difficult to watch yourself. Helpful, too, I always learn a lot. But it’s very hard to watch yourself ans day, “Oh, that was good!” I’m much more likely to watch and say, “Whoa, that was really bad, here’s what I could have done differently.”

Have you had a chance to watch the film with American audiences? I wonder if they respond differently. I don’t know a thing about rugby, for example, but I don’t think that hampered by enjoyment of the film. Are there any nuances that you think we might not get?

I’ve sat in with audiences in Miami and L.A. and also when the film premiered in Toronto. I definitely noticed that people laugh at different things and are quiet at different bits. It’s fascinating to see the different reactions. One example is the scene in which Conor is fighting a bully and it gets pretty vicious. When we showed it in Toronto everyone was in shock during that scene, they were like “Oh my God!” but in other places they were laughing and clapping like it was the greatest thing that ever happened!

Annie Haslam Talks Renaissance, Tour, DVD and Two NJ Shows

Interview by Danny Coleman

“It never stops, it’s crazy because I manage the band right now I’m wearing 10 hats; it’s the only way to do it really because too many things have gone wrong in the past because of people who didn’t have the same vision. So we’re doing things now though, it’s amazing.”

So says the incomparable Annie Haslam of the legendary progressive rock band Renaissance as she prepares for the launch of their seven shows, “Day of the Dreamer Tour” which makes stops November 16 at the Newton Theatre in Newton, NJ and November 17 at The Scottish Rite Auditorium in Collingwood, NJ. The Scottish Rite is also the only one of the seven where the band will once again be joined by an orchestra onstage.

“The reason we could do it with the orchestra last time was because we had done that, “Indiegogo” project and all of our fans came forward and helped make that happen,” said Haslam when asked why only one show with the full compliment. “I wish we could because that’s the way it should be really; it’s just perfect music for the orchestra, it always has been but it’s expensive. Times have changed with the music business and of course we’re now a, “Heritage band;” I’m proud of it but there’s so much competition for the shows because there’s so many bands performing live now. We’re hoping to go further afield next summer to Germany and Italy and we’re talking about and dealing with that right now; possibly England but we are concentrating on further afield.”

No strangers to touring at great length over their 49 year history, this storied group which formed from the remnants of The Yardbirds has begun to scale life on the road back a bit; not because of a waning desire but due to financial and logistical reasons.

“It’s seven shows in November; unfortunately it’s the same old story,” she said with a sigh. “The money that the promoters would give us is not enough to cover our expenses. It’s heartbreaking really and they would probably be small club dates and we just can’t do it. We haven’t been to the west coast in such a long time and they’d (the promoters) have to take a chance on it and a lot of the promoters are different than they were; they’re younger and there’s lots of other bands out there now and new prog bands. Not that we’re a prog band; we’re a symphonic rock band,” she said as she giggled at the term.

“We used to be so huge in Denver but we just can’t get there. We did Red Rocks twice in the 70’s but we just cant get there. Somebody asked me recently; what else would you like to do? I was thinking well, we’ve done everything that you can ever dream of; we did Albert Hall, three nights at Carnegie Hall, we’ve played with orchestras, we’ve been all over the world but I think one of the mistakes that we made in the 70’s is that we concentrated way too much time on the east coast of America instead of going out to the rest of the world and the west coast. We did go out to the west coast but not all that much and I think that might have changed things around at the time had we tried to spread our wings and gone to other countries; it’s amazing what we’ve done. We’ve done everything, I’m not popping off yet but; what else is there to do? I’d like to go to Iceland, that’s one thing I’d like to do. I’d like to see the northern lights for sure but I want to carry on singing and as long as I look good and have my five octaves; I can’t sing those songs if I haven’t got my five octaves and I’m not going to do that to the people as well as myself if I haven’t got those five octaves.”

With the release of a new DVD titled, “A Symphonic Journey,” the band’s third; these November shows are a great way to promote its unveiling and allow the world to see the group up close and personal. Filmed in October 2017 at The Keswick Theater in Pennsylvania, this DVD shows the multi-faceted talents of not only the individual members of the unit but showcases Haslam’s artwork as well.

“The show at the Keswick with the orchestra was a dream of Mick’s and it was a dream that he never saw and that was to play with an orchestra again. Theother dream was one that I had and I made it happen as well; you know that I’m a painter now obviously and I painted 11 paintings to go with the 11 songs that we did and we enlarged them to 24 foot by 12 foot and they were on the screen behind the orchestra and oh gosh that was amazing. So that was two giant bucket list things and when I look back at it now because of the package that we have out and I feel very proud of it and the band.”

So why not return to the site of the filming? How and why did they arrive at the Scottish Rite Auditorium for the lone show with the orchestra?

“Bill Rogers who is fantastic and has promoted us for many years and even back in the 70’s helped arrange it and we had already done the Keswick last fall and we usually don’t do the same place every year because there’s other bands for people to see. The last time we played the Scottish Rite was Michael Dunford‘s last show in 2012 and I was wearing a back brace because I’ve got a dislocated vertebrae and that is also the last time that I saw Michael alive; when he left he got the last British Airways flight out of Philadelphia before Hurricane Sandy hit. We were supposed to play the next night at The Strand Theater in Lakewood, NJ and our drummer Joe Goldberger and I were staying in Fort Washington, PA and we were in the elevator and this guy came in and asked; “Where are you guys going? Are you in a band?” He then asked where we were playing and we said, Lakewood and he said, “You must cancel it because they’re closing down all the roads tonight; you’re not going to be able to get out of Lakewood, you’ll get stuck there.” So we didn’t do it and I actually called the promoter and said that we weren’t doing it and I made the decision because it was going to be very dangerous; so I made the call and the decision to cancel it and thank God we did because it would’ve been a mess plus we would’ve been endangering other people who also could’ve gotten stuck.”

Haslam has been in love with being an artist ever since her childhood; a dream which was fostered along by supportive parents, “When I was 10 years old my parents sent me for allocution lessons to get rid of my northern accent and I thought; what the hell are they doing to me? They couldn’t really afford that but they must have known that something was coming to me when I was older and that I would need a well-spoken voice. When I was 10 it didn’t work straight away but it started to work as I got older and I moved to London and started mixing with people who use Queen’s English and that’s where I got right into it. That’s why when I sing, people say that they can understand every word I say and that’s why they did that for me. They also let me go to art school because they could see that I was artistic and they let me go to a secondary art school when I was 13 and then a full art school when we moved and instead of me going to work like all of my friends, I went to art school because they could see that I had something there and now I’m a painter. My parents were nurturers and they were amazing. I love when after a tour I’ve got a little bit of time to relax and get on with more painting. I just love it with such passion but it’s a bit difficult right now because I’m getting this tour together and I have so many things to deal with but I’m getting requests for pet portraits and then I’ve got these hand written lyrics and they’ve got to look really good on a page and then I have to work out how they’ll look when transferred onto the page because they’re hand written; so I’ve got lots of projects to keep me busy.”

Frustrated at times like many others by today’s business side of the industry, Annie sometimes frets over the role that technology can play in undermining an artist’s bottom line.

“We went to Japan for two shows in September for four days and managed to get an album out through Cherry Red Records before the bootlegs came out and so through them it was out in England and Europe and we decided that we had to put it out in Japan before we got there to support the shows that we did there. So sad is the business now because so many people are ripping you off with bootlegs these days and it breaks your heart. I know people who have walked away from the business because they recorded for months and then somebody buys it from their website and then they copy it and put it out selling it for less money and they make a fortune. That happened to us when we went to Japan in 2001 and we recorded, “The Land of the Rising Sun” which was a brilliant live album and by the time that we got the tapes from the people in Japan and worked on it and we mixed it the bootleg had been out and we only sold a few thousand copies.”

So what does Annie love to do with her time and possibly post Renaissance?

“I’d love to do philanthropy work if I had the money, that’s what I would like to do. There’s so many things that I’d like to change on this planet with people, children and animals. I feel that when I’m doing things that it’s part of a healing process and with my art and the band’s music I’m doing exactly that. The band’s music and the tones, the notes and feelings, not particularly the words or the notes but there’s something in there with the music that is really special and so unique and there’s nothing like it and never will be again I think.”

Music is an Art for Annie Haslam and Renaissance

Interview by Danny Coleman

“I’m 71 this year; can you believe it? I take care of myself; I never abused my voice with drugs and things. The last tour tired me out a little bit because I had to do everything myself but with Micheal Dunford gone I have to make it happen.”

As the legendary vocalist and front woman of the progressive rock band Renaissance, Annie Haslam has seen the ups and downs of a long career which has morphed many times over since 1971. From focal point, to solo artist, to painter and now back with the reformed band once again; this siren with the five octave vocal range continues to wow audiences with her angelic voice as well as her artistic ability.

“I started painting in 2002,” she explained with a voice as smooth as silk. “I went to art school to be a dress designer, I ever only did one painting, it was a watercolor and I thought, I don’t like this it dries too quick. I just didn’t have the desire to do anything like that even though my boyfriend at the time was a brilliant painter but I didn’t look at that because I wanted to be a fashion designer. I did photography, fabric printing, anything to do with what I was there for really; rather than just painting. Then in 2002, I was winding my solo career down, I felt like I had done as much as I could. I had taken on a couple of managers and they just didn’t work out so I thought; what am I going to do? I mean; what am I going to do? I thought well I’m good at photography, I don’t read music so I can’t teach, which was a shame because If I had learned to read and write music I could’ve taught singing. So I was a bit scared as to what I was going to do but I decided that I had to make a change and one day a voice in my head said,”It’s time to start oil painting now” and I’ve had all kind of experiences in my house while I’m painting; all good and wonderful.”

Annie has branched out from her music career yet sees parallels in her two fields of interest. “I feel like I’m gifted. When people listen to the music, they say the same about my paintings; it does something to them, it really uplifts them, it really gets to them and if I do a commission they say,” My God, you got me in this painting” and I’m painting songs now, I can paint songs! The guitar I painted for Martin Guitar is in their museum and I’m painting electric violins apart from all of the other painting I’m doing. A Lot of my earlier works have to do with aliens, I’m definitely very much tuned into that because I believe we’re all from different planets anyway (laughs).”

Surprisingly, Haslam wasn’t ready to become a painter and avoided diving in head first, yet was somehow unexpectedly drawn to it and has now fully embraced her skills as an artist; so much so that at times it borders on the super natural.

“When I was painting my fourth painting, I’m not a flowery girl, never wore flowery dresses and I thought I’m not going to paint flowers but I thought; what am I supposed to be doing? So I bought everything I needed and didn’t paint for like another two or three months and then one day I thought, well today is the day. So I picked a Tiger Lily and painted it and I was very disappointed. I bought a book on oil painting but I didn’t read it because I’m not a reader; I read one page and put it down because I couldn’t be bothered. I thought I’d rather do it wrong and work it out to do it myself, which is what I did but when I decided it was the right day; I thought oh shoot; where do I start? Do I start at the top? The bottom? The middle? (Laughs) Of course it has nothing to do with that at all, it’s the character I get. I don’t try and do anything, it’s just like I’m being plugged into something and the paintings just appear. The third or fourth painting, I was sitting in front of my easel and about six inches in front of my eyes appeared a spider on a skein of silk. It was a really rich auburn red and I blinked and it was gone and as soon as blinked my eyes there was an overwhelming smell of pipe smoke; I knew right away that it was Vincent Van Gogh. I had already started doing the painting and it was like someone else was holding my hand; it’s very exciting and I love it.”

Over the years and with a growing confidence, Annie has begun to cross pollinate her music and art. Several years ago at a progressive rock festival headlined by the band Yes, she put her artwork on the line against some of her peers and one well respected artist by the name of Dean, Roger Dean.

“I recall, “Yestival” in Camden, NJ for two reasons; one musical and one artistic. I did 95 four by six inch paintings to sell there and you know, Roger Dean was there selling his work and his was extremely expensive but absolutely amazing but anyway; I sold everyone of them. I sold every single one of them, all 95. The other thing was, it was very exciting and we had to be there by nine in the morning and we had breakfast, lunch and dinner there but when we went on stage later that day, something was happening with the speakers and there was a rumbling on stage that you couldn’t hear out in the house apparently but it was a rumbling and I’m deaf in one ear so I only wear one in ear(Monitor) and it’s in my right ear and all I heard was this rumbling coming up from the stage and my voice was; oh my I sounded like I was 10 miles away. When something happens like that you somehow have to have a stiff upper lip and cover it up somehow but if you can’t hear yourself singing it’s very difficult to sing in tune (laughs).”

Renaissance reunited within the last decade and on the surface appears to be continuously on the road but according to Haslam; such is not the case and judging by her reaction to the first show after years apart the band made the right decision.

“Not really, we’ve played on the east coast twice a year and also have been to Europe and England but when Michael Dunford and I got the band back together in 2009; we didn’t know what was going to happen really. It was John Scher putting his faith in us again and that’s what started it all off. The first tour we did was amazing; everybody came out of the woodwork and it was like, wow! Because so many years had gone by and we hadn’t done anything, I had my solo career and been to Brazil and Japan with that and then I started my painting career and so it’s been amazing really. Because we’re a six piece band, it’s not cost effective because we lost that time and momentum of all those years and we lost promoters on the west coast, some of the older ones are still around and the younger ones don’t want to take the chance and we were always bigger on the east coast anyway; so it was very difficult for us to get to further a field. We did manage to get to England in 2015 and 2016 and that was absolutely incredible. We filmed a DVD in London at the Union Chapel, we went to Europe, we went to Germany, Holland, Belgium, Israel and Portugal as well and it looks like we might be going to Japan in September; we were there in 2010. So it seems like we’ve been doing a lot but not really, it’s not like six week tours. It’s maybe eight days in the spring and maybe six or eight in the fall and something else somewhere else. We did, “Cruise to The Edge,” which was quite exciting and we did the “Moody Blues Cruise,” which was phenomenal as well.”

So what hasn’t the band done over its long and storied career? How about incorporating a symphonic sound? Haslam says that what started out as an experiment blossomed into more than they could’ve hoped for. “We did these shows last fall with a 10 piece orchestra, it was a test really. We did an indiegogo campaign to make it all happen and John Scher stood up for us again and booked us at Town Hall in New York and that was a big place to book for us really but it was close to a sell out. Then we did the show down here at the Keswick (Theater) and every song I did a painting for; I did it on a 12 by 24 inch canvas and we blew them up to 24 feet by 12 feet. I had to get them photographed with a special camera so that it would work and we filmed it and we’re working on the DVD right now.”

With the experiment a success, the band is currently revisiting symphonic shows and recently performed one at the NJPAC in Newark, NJ. Once again, much of the logistical responsibility falls on Haslam’s shoulders but she’s enlisted some good company to assist her.

“We’re using the orchestra again, we did four shows with the orchestra the last time around. Then John Scher said that he’d like to do another show with the orchestra because he was really impressed by the show in New York which was wonderful. I basically did this all myself with the help of people who work with me and Ray Tessa who has been an incredible pianist, director, my producer and we have written songs together, he’s a very gifted man and a wonderful spirit and we did it. We had a meeting in London after the 2016 tour with the director of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra because we’d been written to and were asked to work with them again. This was amazing because so many people want to work with them and here they were inviting us to work with them again but of course they don’t pay you, you have to pay them,” she said with a loud laugh. “So we had the meeting to work out how we could do the Albert Hall and we made notes about everything that we’d need and the cost and the budget. It would’ve been nice if we could do more orchestra tours but it’s great because we didn’t think that we’d be doing one so quickly and this last show was in a great theater; the Victoria was beautiful. We’re probably going to be doing another one in the fall as well but of course it all comes down to money; we’ll probably make it happen. We tried it here first with a smaller orchestra and Ray gathered these incredible musicians and the blend of everyone was amazing and when they first struck up at the rehearsal I had tears in my eyes and at the first show in Connecticut I thought I was going to pass out to hear the orchestra playing with us.”
