This is what I mean when I say old Danish music is just so utterly joyful. Give it a listen and tell me you aren't bouncing along with it even though you have no idea what's being sung xD

I like this probably a bit too much... apart from the chorus.

Wednesday, March 27: Beyond Twilight, "Godless and Wicked"
For a good long while, Jørn Lande seemed to take whatever gig came his way, but his one record with Beyond Twilight was arguably a bit more notable because it ultimately played like a dress rehearsal for the slightly prog-inflected power metal of Masterplan.  “Godless and Wicked” was a bit more progressive and dramatic than what Lande cooked up with Roland Grapow and Uli Kusch, and the vocals had much more bite to them- this was actually one of Lande’s more aggressive performances.  The song packed a lot into its short runtime, and for 2001 was a fairly adventurous balance of prog, symphonic and crunchy power metal, weaving elements of the former into what was a rather heavy foundation.  And while the ad hoc nature of their lineups kept Beyond Twilight from coming into its own as a functioning band, “Godless and Wicked” was a sterling example of what they could do when the pieces fell into place.

Music inspirations: A Road to Damascus (DK)
Self indulgent post incoming but I need to talk about the last time I felt this passionate about a musician/band (and yes it was over a decade ago) because I just rediscovered them and oh my gosh they are still giving me the strongest feeling of seretonin and I can sing along with almost all their songs !!! (until I stopped listening to them in 2014 since those songs I’ve only just heard now)
Let me introduce you to the danish band A Road To Damascus - a metal/rock/pop punk band I learned about when they played a local gig in my hometown - I fell in love with them from the moment I heard this one song (second below). No, actually I fell in love as soon as I saw the guitarist’s purple guitar x’D (I got to hold it afterwards :3). Since then I basically followed them around anywhere on their Danish tour, bought all their albums and merch, gifted them a piece of fanart (and got them to sign the copy for myself) and even was gifted back a sheet of chords (signed of course) so I could play their song live at an open mic event :’3 It got to a point that I was on first name basis with most of if not the entire band :’D
I’ve tried to find some of my favourite songs from each album (they don’t have a lot but it is worth checking out anyways) below :3
1) Sweetheart, 2010 (Pretty alright for first outing :3)
2) Head High, Hands Down, 2011 (aka the song that got me HOOKED)
3) The Best is Yet to Come, 2011
4) Home is Where Your Heart Was, 2014 (aka the song I got the chords to)
5) All Said and Done, 2014 (the intro sends me back so it’s a big nostalgia kick - funny when the lyrics fit with my current state more xD)
6) The Last Straw, 2019
7) Fearless, 2020
6) Sirens, 2023 (as soon I heard it, it reminded me how much I love these guys!)
There’ll be some even more selfindulgent parts under the line x’D
Here’s me with the bassist and guitarist (I’m wearing their merch which is sadly almost too worn to wear now and I ruined it by trying to make it into a croptop x’D):

Here’s me and the frontman (don’t mind me looking away x’D):

Here I am holding up the signed copy of the fanart :3

So yeah if you need something to listen to I can recommend these guys.

In Denmark we celebrate Christmas on the 24th, so I thought I'd share this.
It's an arrangement of Mit Hjerte Altid Vanker and quite possibly my favourite choir piece. The original melody, which is part of the arrangement, is written in 1914, but this arrangement makes it sound like it was written much earlier and I LOVE it.
Merry Christmas to all of you who celebrate.

Lust for Youth - Giorgia
Tumblr media
Though Denmark’s Lust for Youth and their affiliated personae are no stranger to experimentation in sound, vocalist Hannes Norrvide introduces his first Swedish-language track with “Giorgia”. Sauntering through the lo-fi nudge of synthesizer beats and navigating through the sustain of chafing guitars, the track is quintessentially Lust for Youth. Resonating its yearning calls of Scandinavian melancholy, Hannes' filtered vocals echo of both thankful gratitude and quiet defeat as the track centers over foreboding consequence. Speaking about his Swedish-language first Hannes had this to say:
“’Giorgia’ is about thinking you’ve met someone, but the feeling wasn’t mutual and you were nothing more than a summer flirt. The song is about that chase and about seeking that next rush; trying to find some sort of happiness somewhere else.”

Voss Torp Brill, 1984: " + + (Dobbelt Plus)"
Danish synth pop with an unusual amount of, uh, background ululating? I guess is what you would call it? Like imagine you were trying to record some New Wave but Xena Warrior Princess or possibly Tarzan was beating up a giggling werewolf in the next studio

Friday, December 2: King Diamond, “Shrine”
R.I.P. Timi Hansen (1958-2019)
Plenty of metal bands released singles in the ‘80s, but most in the genre wisely focused on albums given the tremendously low odds of something like “No Presents for Christmas” getting played on the radio.  Because of that, compilations like The Dark Sides were actually pretty valuable for fans, as they rounded up all of those stray tracks that, while not always mountain-shaking, frequently had their moments.  And “Shrine,” as a B-side to “The Family Ghost”, was something of a minor gem from King Diamond’s golden age that spotlighted the power and chemistry of the Diamond/LaRocque/Denner/Hansen/Dee lineup. Everyone was at or near the top of their game, and it seemed like the primary reason “Shrine” was left off Abigail was that King’s lyrics didn’t fit the album’s concept.  That standalone nature gave it the benefit of not needing to be anything other than a top-flight ‘80s Euro metal banger, which was exactly what it was.
