Sex-paralysappeal, Wilhelm Freddie, 1936
"Freddie exploits the notion of the desire understood as the desire to be close to something or someone away. The spectator stays away from things, and the photograph of the work seems to intensify the feeling of proximity and at the same time distance from the object.
The work’s composite title vacillates between sex appeal and paralysis, amplifying the incongruity of its constituent elements.
As far as Sex-paralysappeal is concerned, it should be added that the work was only accessible in the form of a photograph. The object, considered pornographic, was confiscated by the police immediately after its creation."
