I’m not sure how I didn’t know that Paolini was even working on a Murtagh book, let alone that it was out already, but I didn’t know! At all!!!!
So now I’m ending the year of “live like 2013 me would’ve wanted” by reading a book that’s the canon version of fanfiction that 2013 me wrote. What a time to be alive.

wait hi you made the magic post so yes what is your opinion on eragon if you’ve read it?
i think that it's a very decent fantasy novel with a lot of potential considering that the first book was written when the author was 16 years old. it does fall victim to a lot of fantasy cliches and does at times feel derivative of existing popular scifi and fantasy stories like star wars, the lord of the rings, etc. which is a shame because it has a lot of really good and interesting worldbuilding, characters and plotlines and that can be overlooked as a result. eragon is unfortunately overshadowed by pretty much every other character, too, which can make it difficult to read at times because literally everyone is more interesting than our protagonist and i want to read more about them and less about him. also the amount of doctor who references felt... unnecessary at times. and there are some plot threads and implications of further lore behind certain characters, things and events that get brought up but never really given any sort of satisfying conclusion or explanation (angela the herbalist's entire character in particular falls victim to being too mysterious and unexplained to the point that it felt like paolini just let her do things because it was cool and never intended to explain them. which isn't the end of the world, but past a certain point it stops being funny and gets really frustrating). there were also some pacing issues at times, especially in the later books it felt like sometimes there was a lot of filler being used to pad out chapters so they didn't get to the final battle too quickly, and then the final confrontation ended up feeling a bit rushed and video-gamey.
all that being said, i absolutely love so many things about eragon. as i said, there are SO many interesting supporting characters i really enjoyed - nasuada was one of my absolute favorites; a black woman in a position of leadership with a well developed character and story and relationships and goals was really really nice to see, especially in a fantasy novel, and her pov chapters were probably some of the best in the book in my opinion. murtagh, arya, elva and roran were all really compelling characters too. and i found the magic system absolutely fantastic, it's probably one of my favorites of all time. i could write an entire essay on how interesting the concept of drawing on life energy to produce magic is and the ethical implications of it, not to mention the whole concept of the ancient language. i really loved how the books explored the consequences of misusing magic so thoroughly and answered a lot of questions in that regard (especially with elva; the idea of a child being forced to grow up too fast because they received a misworded blessing that, instead of shielding them from pain, caused them to experience everyone's agony simultaneously was SO fucked up and horrifying and absolutely delightful to read about as a result). the descriptions of different settings were also really cool; i always enjoyed reading the sections that introduced you to a new setting, especially those of the dwarven kingdom. and although it was far from being the next tolkien, it was nice to see consistent attempts at creating a fantasy language.
and then, of course, there's the dragons. i don't really have any complaints there. they're magnificent beasts and i really enjoyed that they had individual characters and weren't just dumb animals but an intelligent fantasy species with their own culture and history. my only issue is that the books never really seems able to decide how much agency they should have and how dependent on their riders they should be, but. eh. i can live with it i guess.
tl;dr it's a fun fantasy series with a LOT of good ideas that get a bit lost in the sauce sometimes but overall worth reading if you enjoy your fantasy with a heavy serving of cheese and surprisingly excellent worldbuilding.

I'm finally sending out blorbsday asks again (I think). Please assign your blorbos to the setting of a book you like and explain briefly (or longly) how they'd fare.
Well I just reread the Inheritance Cycle and Murtagh so! Let's do that.
Beth's story... honestly wouldn't change from Eragon's very much. I'm envisioning this whole parallel arc to her actual story in The SOLE Project where Dr. Agau is this extremely old elf who wants to train the first Dragon Rider in hundreds of years, and puts all this pressure to perform on her. So she would have high expectations to memorize loads of words in the ancient language, be skilled in combat, and carry out the experiments Dr. Agau comes up with to push the boundaries of magic.
I don't know who her dragon would be, but I think whoever they are, they would disapprove of Dr. Agau not holding her experiments herself. She says it's because she doesn't have her dragon anymore, and therefore doesn't have the strength or energy to conduct them herself, but Dragon thinks it's just bc she doesn't want to put herself in danger.
ANYWAY there's a discussion in here about whether Dr. Agau would actually be more like Galbatorix and be in this controlling position of power, and Beth would be a Murtagh figure, controlled by her and powerful, but...
Hans would be like Roran. He has the charisma to keep people together and his strength comes from fighting for his friends, and being a human man would not stop him from trying to romance the elven Rider. As for how he'd fare, he's only in danger because how long he lives depends on how much angst I need to put Beth through.
Hallie is difficult to translate into Alagaesia. I think maybe she would be some kind of handmaid type thing in Agau's court, and be assigned to Beth when Agau sends her out. It would mean the Dragon would have to carry two, but Agau does not let Beth out into the world lightly. Dragon would definitely be mature/large enough. She would fare... She would be constantly stressed, but she would do her best to support Beth.
Christian would be an Urgal/Kull burned by dragon fire. I feel like I don't really need to say more than that, but I'm going to anyway. It's all there! The anger! The isolation from society bc 1. Urgals have all this stigma (even if this was a post-Name of Names setting) and 2. People recoil from the burns and scars! The tension with Beth and her dragon! So he'd far way worse than he is in SOLE Project but I think it would be fun fun fun.
Matt would be a dwarf and he would fare great and be happy until the rest of these ^ jokers showed up in his life. I don't know how he would get roped into things, but I'm sure he would be a good sport (though he would always maintain that his Ultimate End Goal is to get back to his happy life that they're all jealous of).
Michael... I'm tempted to make him a Shade sworn to Dr. Agau. I think that would be fun. And obviously he would fare terribly.

A continuation of A Way

With two daughters and a baby on the way, her husband a practicing paralegal, and herself a practicing doctor, their life is beyond full.
Bree is ten and able to take and pass college courses. She still attends classes with her peer group but more as a teacher’s aide then student. In the summer, she takes classes at Boston University. They have made an exception for her brilliance.
“Mr. and Dr. Fraser, in all my years I have never known a individual, no matter the age, as bright as your daughter. She is keeping my professors on their toes.” The dean told them after her first quarter.
Julia is in Kindergarten. Bright but not brilliant. It is a relief. “I am not sure I have the energy for another genius.” Claire admitted to Jamie. He had laughed.
“Nor do I.” he confessed.
Now they are days away from their third or fifth, depending on how you look at it. Faith and Fergus are a part of their family. They talk with the lasses about them along with Auntie Jenny and Uncle Ian. Murtagh, Column, Douglas, Ned, (Grandpa Fredrick ‘s kin). The know of the stones.
Bree is writing a thesis on time travel and the legend of the Stones. If anyone can figure out the magic behind them, it will be her.
One beautiful autumn day, Claire goes into labor. After a long and arduous labor, she is delivered of a lad! His daddy and sisters are all happy. Mama is just relieved.
“Hello William James.” He is named after his father, lost uncle and, his oldest sister favorite writer. She wanted him name Shakespeare . Her parents had quickly vetoed that.
He is a perfect mix of both his parents. He has his daddy ‘s red hair, his sisters slanted eyes through they are whiskey colored like his mamas. He also has her curls.
“Hello William . I am Brianna Ellen, your oldest sister. I will help you learn whatever you want to know.”
“Hi Willie, I am Julia. I will play with you.”
Both parents tear up at their greetings. “Your sisters are a lot but they adore you. We all do Willie James.” Jamie cradles his son to his chest. He is Willie James from that point on, despite his eldest sister ‘s attempts to call him William.
They decide three is enough. Claire gets on the modern Pill. Their family is complete until…
It is a normal day. A Saturday that sees everyone home. Willie James is a bit over a year. He is toddling around the house to the amusement of his sisters. They follow him around with outstretched arms, ‘in case he falls.’ As Julia explains.
Claire is dictating while Jamie works on notes for an upcoming case. There is a knock on the door. He raises to answer it. His exclamation has his wife and children joining him. Claire keeps them behind her.
“Jamie?”
“Claire it is…!”
“Mílady!” She almost passed out. Her husband supports her, really they support each other.
“Mama, who is it?”
“Mom cherí, I am Fergus.” He replies to Bree.
“You came through like mama and daddy did.” She calmly states. Julia and Willie hide behind her.
“Fergus!” She draws her into her arms. “My darling son!”
They all evidently find seats and he explains. “They wouldn’t let us marry. Her mam, Mílady, you recall Laoghaire?” She simply nods, “Well she is her daughter. Said, well things about you, things I shall not repeat in front of the bairns.”
“So you decided to travel through, you and Marsali?” Jamie looks at the lass holding tight to his hand. He can tell she is with child, though it is early. He also sees Laoghaire in her looks.
“Ouí. I didn’t ken what else to do. I knew my wife and coming bairn would be safe here, with you and Mílady.”
“So they are. “
It is a shock but a welcome one. He tells them about Jenny and Ian and their children. About everyday life after the upraising. They tell them about modern life. About their jobs and children. Bree dazzles them with her brilliance, Julia charms with her sweetness and, Fergus falls hard for his baby brother.
Jamie gets Fergus a job at the law office and Claire takes time off to help her daughter -in-law adjust.
Five months later, Germaine is born. They are grandparents and their family is… well never say done😁

Oh, are we listing childhood beloved villains? Mine are also Randall from Monsters Inc, Pain and Panic from Hercules, Scroop from Treasure Planet, Ratchet from Robots, Zira from Lion King 2, Thorn and Murtagh from the Inheritance Cycle, and Shen from Kung Fu Panda 2. That pretty bitch was and is a big favorite of mine. My most obscure childhood blorbo might have been Dr. Blowhole from the Penguins of Madagascar show.

Chapter 40: Life Goes On But The Threat Looms
Masterlist
Life goes on after the Gathering and the lighting of the cross. Those who had come back with them from the Gathering continue to carve out their new life at the ridge.
Arch Bug has been hired as the factor of the Ridge while his wife Murdina settles in as housekeeper at the Big House. There's also Billy Aberfeldy, his wife and daughter who are both called Ruth are nearly in their own cabin after having to live in cramped conditions in the Big House and two other families. One of the families is Geordie Chisholm's, from Ardsmuir, brood. His wife, his elderly mother who narrowly escaped being trampled by Da's high-strung horse, Gideon, when travelling back to the Ridge, and his seven sons. His younger sons, Thomas, Anthony and Toby Chisholm, ranging in age from five through eight, are quickly dubbed "the spawn o’ Satan" by Mrs Bug.
Marsali also becomes Mama's new assistant. Brian knows his mother should have the help and support that he and Ellen can't always offer, particularly after Mr Farrish's death because of his wife's well-meaning but murderous methods she used to treat him before bringing him on death door to the surgery meant no hope of being saved.

"Dr Rawlings?" Brian questions as he looks at the paper his mother had handed to him. The title reads 'Dr. Rawlings recommends' with a list covering the rest of the page. "Do you think it'll work?"
Mama huffs. "It has to. If I have witness anyone else die from supposed cures that's actually killing them because of a 'reputable physician'." She rolls her eyes causing Brian to smirk slightly. "I'm making lots of copies and distribute them to our settlers. Ellen has helped me."
"Want more help in writing more about not to do?"
Mama smiles. Grateful for the help, she hands Brian a pen and paper. Brian sits down and starts helping her copy the list.

Brian looks around the hallway as he follows his parents in the Big House. With all the men diligently working around the clock, it is now safe to walk around upstairs and the basics of it are done. But there is still a lot to do to get it finished, like carpeting the floors or putting wallpaper on the walls, etc. What will one day become bedrooms are just empty spaces with nothing in them. They don't even have doors. Except for one.
The three of them stop outside of one room that has a finished door, painted white with maroon trim and a silver doorknob.
"What's this?" Brian questions.
"It's yer new room." Da casually states.
He raises his eyebrows, not understanding. "What? What do you mean? What do you mean my room?"
"Go inside and see for yourself." Mama adds.
Brian is trying to remain cautiously optimistic as he slowly turns the doorknob and opens the door.
"Wow," is all he can say at first. Inside is an upgraded version of what he had in the kitchen.
Not only is it twice as big but there is a new bed as well. On the wall across from the door, which is wallpapered off white, is a large window that looks over the back fields and has curtains that are the colour of the door's trim that at the moment are drawn back. He no longer has only a small dresser for his clothes. Now, he has a tall and wide-standing wardrobe for just himself that is dark wood with intricate patterns carved out in it. He takes one step at a time going around the room, wondering if this is real.
"Well, lad? Does it please ye?" Da needs to know.
Brian looks back at them. "It more than pleases me. I can't believe this. This is actually my room?"
"We figured it was time you had a bit more privacy and space rather than being held up in that shoebox of a room." Mams tells him.
Brian grins at his parents. "Thank you."

...yet the threat still looms
When Da had gotten his order from Tryon to hunt and kill Murtagh, he figured the safest place he could be was on the Ridge, since no one would ever think he would be hiding out there. He lived not even a half mile from the Big House in his own larger lean-to. He didn't ever dare come to them, but Da, Brian, and the rest of their family made several treks out to see him. But now that Tryon is getting much more serious about taking down the Regulators, Brian is glad that Murtagh has moved on.
Governor Tryon introduced Da to Lieutenant Knox at Ellen and Roger's wedding, explaining that the lieutenant would assist Da with his search for Murtagh. Everyone was worried about how Da could possibly hold off on finding his godfather with the redcoats breathing down his neck.
"What are you going to do?" Mama asked her husband.
"If it's a manhunt Tryon wants, it's a manhunt he shall get." Da responded. Short and sweet.
Da tries sending Tryon's men on a wild goose chase, but things are still getting very heated. The regulators are lathering the Militia men with tar and feathers. Tryon is at his wit's end and Brian knows it is not going to end well.

December 1770
Far too soon for anyone's liking, it comes time for Da to leave again, now taking with him the men of the Ridge. This included Brian, Mama, Fergus and Roger. Lieutenant Knox wants them to gather the men of the Ridge to aid in enlisting for the militia, for Tryon's army against the Regulators and to show the Regulators their numbers.
Because of Arch Bug's advanced age and injury to his hand, he is ineligible for service in the militia and thus can be depended upon to mind matters on the Ridge in Da's absence. The Lindsay brothers prepare to join them on their journey. Rabbie Cochrane, while he's too old to join the militia Da has been forced to gather, some of his eleven grown children scattered across the mountains will be mustered.
A dozen militiamen from Fraser's Ridge are travelling with them including John Quincy Myers, Isaiah Morton, brothers Kenny and Evan Lindsay, Geordie Chisholm and Ronnie Sinclair. The plan is to recruit men along the way, with a stop at Brownsville first, and take them to Hillsborough.
"Captain Fraser, permission to approach?" Ellen calls to him. She has already said goodbye to their parents, Fergus and Roger.
Brian turns from his horse to her. "Granted." He chuckles. He's glad for his sister's jokes considering how nervous he feels though his shooting skills have improved.
"You ready for this?"
"Absolutely not."
"Stop. You're gonna do fine. Da's gonna be right there with you the whole time. He's not going to let you do anything he doesn't think you're ready for." Ellen reassures.
"I'm just praying that the numbers we form will make the Regulators surrender before there's any risk of that." Brian says, chewing his lip anxiously.
"With Murtagh leading them, you know that's not going to happen. He's determined to kill Tryon himself."
"Any chance a captain can get out of having to fight in the actual battle and can just cheer the troops on from the sidelines?" Brian asks only half joking.
Ellen lets out a, "Ha! I would love to see you try to convince Da of that. But if that doesn't work," she puts her hand on his arm, "please stay safe. Hide behind trees and rocks or whatever is closest, and just stay alive no matter what."
A third person then joins them, announcing themselves with, "Brian?" It is Ruth Aberfeldy. She has long curly blonde hair and brown eyes. She is shorter than Ellen but just as slim. She is the kind of pretty and the sort of bubbly and flirty personality.
Ruth glances at Ellen and is almost surprised to see her there. "I apologise, Mistress Mackenzie, fer interruptin' yer conversation."
"Not at all. No need to apologise."
"I will leave the two of you to finish your goodbyes." Ellen says to them. She touches his arm. "Be careful, got it?"
Brian nods in reply, flashing her a grateful smile. She gives Ruth a kind smile, Ruth curtsies then Ellen walks away to find Marsali.
Ruth turns back to Brian. Brian is more than a bit miffed at his time with his sister being cut off but smiles pleasantly at her.
"Miss Aberfeldy." He greets, bowing his head.
Ruth blushes and gives a quick curtsy, biting back an idiotic grin. "I, uh, I-I wanted te wish ye luck on yer endeavours. I’ll be prayin’ fer ye, fer God te keep watch over ye and keep ye out o’ harm’s way. An-and the other men, all o’ them, o’ course too."
"That's very kind of you, Miss Aberfeldy."
Ruth nods so quickly that Brian wonders if her head is going to fall off before leaving. Brian sighs before turning to look at the rest of the group all mounted on their horses and ready to leave.
A moment later, the militia leaves. Brian looks back to Ellen, Marsali, the kids and many Ridge residents watching them go. Brian is reminded that for them they are really fighting.

Tartans
So I looked up David Rintoul after I wrote my earlier post. David was born with the last name of Fisher.
You may wonder why I am looking at all this. Well, I have to tell you that I have a great interest in the past, before and after Culloden, an interest in the monarchy, and the tartans.
The tartan David was wearing in the episode of Dr. Finlay was of inrerest to me. It appeared to be mostly grey, with a touch of brown, and perhaps some green. According to my TV picture. The closest I come to in my book of tartans was a later one that Prince Albert designed, and is called the Balmoral Tartan, in colours of grey, with touches of brown and red. Again, I have seen it only in photographs, both on TV and in my book, which is probably more reasonable.
Sam's tartan, the one he designed (see it in the Great Glen Company merchandise) is basially grey with touches of black. In Outlander, the tartan he wore for his wedding to Claire was one of the McDonald's tartans, after Culloden. His own Fraser tartan is red and black, which is the one I have of "jamie" in an Amazon publicity photo. But as Murtagh, he could not have had the red and black tartan because the people hunting for him would have seen rather than the more subdued McDonald tartan (no matter what the publicity department for Outlander said their reason for not using the red and black for their costume department). Anyway, Sam's tartan design if grey with black interlaced.
So I have solved my own questions relating to David Fisher (Rintoul). Perhaps the one in Dr. Finlay was more related to the show being situation near Balmoral.

Outlander season 1 episode 12
Perhaps it’s a sign to keep on surviving? The image doesn’t seem to be a coincidence because if fans will recall from Season 3’s opener on the battlefield at Culloden, Jamie imagines seeing Claire only to see a rabbit replace the manifestation. As Claire comes out of the dream, she wakens to find a rabbit sitting in front of her. He drags her over to a tree where she’s tied up again and delved into the dream world again. That evening, she is sitting around the fire but is struck down by Lionel when she gives him a dirty look. When she comes out of it, Lionel approaches them and puts a gag on Claire so she can’t talk. In the house we see Murtagh ( Duncan Lacroix) and Jocasta ( Maria Doyle Kennedy) playing with Marsali ( Lauren Lyle) and Fergus’ ( C��sar Domboy) son and they gather around the dinner table. But when Arvin interrupts and grabs Claire to take her with him, the stressful situation is once again overtaken by her dream. When they deboard the carriage, they’re meant to cross the river and Claire asks for Tebbe to help her escape, saying that he’ll be spared if he does. The actor is addressing fans about the treatment he says he and his costars and family have faced. He offers her food and asks for her to remember that he fed her, fearful of what she’ll do to the men once she’s eventually freed. But the ideal world doesn’t last long as Claire wakes on a carriage where the man who had referred to her as a conjure woman introduces himself as Tebbe (Alexis Rodney). Jamie wraps a blanket around her and mentions that she’s shaking so much that she’s making his teeth rattle.
Before he can say more, Claire is transported back to her dream where she’s looking out into the rainy evening from the comfort of the house.
Once she’s tied up, a man named Wendigo Donner (Brennan Martin) asks Claire where she comes from and he says some unusual things, mentioning a man on the moon. One of the men says it’s going to put them all in danger, accusing Claire of being a conjure woman. When we return to the 18th century, we see Claire attempting to run but once caught she’s slashed by Arvin Hodgepile (Gerald Tyler). A giddy young boy squeals in the arms of an undisclosed individual as Jamie greets Ian ( John Bell) clad in a soldier’s uniform at the door. When he pushes her to the ground her dream world is conjured once more as the doorbell rings. His plan is to bring her to Brownsville where she’ll tell the women she was responsible for the musings of Dr.
