“Jughead?”

At the sound of his name, Jughead shoves his phone into his back pocket, looks up, and freezes. 

The woman standing in the doorway — with a bouncy blonde ponytail, collared sweater, and the greenest eyes he’s ever seen — is not what he’d envisioned when he scheduled a consultation with a tattoo cover-up specialist. 

“Jughead Jones?” she repeats, sounding slightly unsure this time. 

“Yeah, no, that’s me.” He clears his throat as he rises to his feet, and she smiles.

“Nice to meet you. I’m Betty.” With a wave of her hand, she leads him into a small room at the back of the shop, gesturing towards the black tattoo chair in the corner for him to take a seat. “And you’re looking to cover up a back tattoo, is that right?”

“That’s right.”

“Great.” Betty blinks at him for a moment, then asks, “So can I see it?”

“Right. Yeah, of course.” With a slight shake of his head, Jughead pulls his t-shirt over his head, taking care to ensure his gray beanie doesn’t come off with it. 

He twists around so she can see the tattoo in question, a name spelled out in black script across his left shoulder: Jessica.

“Okay,” Betty says after a brief pause. “So this is either going to be fairly easy or really hard, depending on what you want.”

Jughead cranes his head over his shoulder to see her, and immediately regrets it. From a distance, she was distractingly pretty; up close, she’s dazzling. 

Turning back towards the wall, he says, “Easy, please.”

“Oh — so you don’t have a design in mind?”

He glances at her again. “Not really. Was I supposed to?” 

“Well, usually, but — we can work together on something. That actually might make it easier. Some people come in with, like, a big black Celtic knot on their chest and think I can magically turn it into a field of yellow daisies.” 

Betty smiles again, and Jughead feels his insides turn to goo. 

Goddammit.

He’s here to erase the final vestiges of his latest romantic entanglement — not knot himself up in a new one. Especially not with the woman doing the erasing, for that matter. 

“Of course, you could also go the laser removal route, if there’s nothing you’re excited to replace it with,” she continues, oblivious to the fact that she’s utterly charming him with nothing more than what is probably her standard spiel for new clients. “But since it’s black, you’re probably looking at at least ten to twelve sessions, and there still might be kind of a smudge left there at the end.”

Jughead had in fact looked into laser removal, and come to the similar conclusion that driving over an hour back and forth to the dermatology clinic in Greendale a dozen times was an exorbitantly long amount of time to spend undoing a decision that he’d made in roughly ten seconds. Besides, spending more time around Betty hardly seems like a chore.

“I’m sure we’ll come up with something I’m excited about.” 

Betty leaves the room, returning with an armful of books and binders filled with design ideas. “See if anything in these inspires you, and I’ll tell you if it’s doable,” she explains.

To his surprise, rather than leaving Jughead alone to peruse the artwork, she settles back into the chair opposite him and begins to flip idly through one of the books herself. “Feel free to tell me if I’m being too nosy,” she says lightly, “but sometimes it’s helpful with creating a new design if I know the story behind the old one.” 

Jughead cringes — he’d figured this was coming. “There’s not much of a story,” he admits. “My now-ex-girlfriend and I did shrooms on a weekend trip to the city and she somehow convinced me to get her name tattooed across my back while I was tripping balls.”

Betty clucks her tongue in disapproval. “A decent artist wouldn’t tattoo a guy who shows up tripping balls.”

“A decent artist wouldn’t get the phone number of the girlfriend whose name a guy was getting tattooed across his back,” he replies. “And a decent girlfriend wouldn’t text him for a booty call literally the next day. But that’s why she’s an ex-girlfriend, not a decent girlfriend.”

Betty snorts, immediately followed by a soft gasp as she claps her hand across her mouth. “I’m sorry. That’s not funny.”

Jughead grins as he flips to the next page in his book. “No, it is. And it was months ago, I’m over it. You’re welcome to viciously mock me for my poor decision-making skills. Everyone else in my life already has.” Chief among them being his sister, JB, but even his best friend Archie — who himself harbored a laundry list of embarrassing romantic mishaps — had got in a few good digs. 

“I have one rule: I don’t make fun of my clients,” Betty insists, though the slant of her mouth suggests otherwise. “But maybe it’ll make you feel better to know that you’re not alone.” 

“Honestly, it makes me feel like a cliche.” 

“Well, everyone deserves a second chance.” 

Something about the way she says it draws his gaze back to her face, but her own eyes are trained down on the pages in her lap. Jughead feels a sudden, desperate urge to know more about her. 

“Feel free to tell me if I’m being too nosy,” he begins slowly. “But most tattoo artists I’ve met are pretty much covered in tattoos themselves.” 

A faint pink flush rises on Betty’s cheeks as she meets his questioning gaze. “How do you know I’m not?”

It’s a fair point. The only bare skin she has on display is that of her hands, her neck, and her face. 

But the mere suggestion of more — the thought of peeling away her clothes to find the warm, smooth, inked up skin beneath — is too much for him to handle right now.

With a sly twist to her lips, Betty holds one arm out towards him, pushing back the sleeve of her sweater to reveal the underside of her wrist. What looks like the curled end of a dragon’s tail peeks out from the edge. 

“My parents strongly disapprove, so I don’t get inked anywhere that I can’t cover up with my clothes. It’s silly, but makes visits home a lot easier to bear.” She shrugs. “And it’s cold out today.” 

Jughead swallows. “That’s a shame. Just that little bit of it looks pretty cool.”

“Maybe I’ll let you see the whole thing when you come back for your next appointment.” 

Betty holds his gaze for a beat. Then — to his horror — she bursts into laughter.

She presses her palms to her cheeks, which have grown bright red. “I’m so sorry. I’m not normally this…I didn’t mean for that to sound like…god, you must think I’m so unprofessional.”

“No, no. It’s okay.” Jughead laughs, too, certain his own red-hot face matches hers. “I — well, I’d like that.” He closes the book in his lap, leaning slightly forward. “Maybe we could keep working on a design over drinks tonight?”

Betty presses her lips together, her nose scrunching up adorably. “I actually have two rules. I also don’t date my clients.” 

Jughead shoots her a crooked smile. “Then I guess I’ll have to go with the laser removal, after all.”

Just before the Australian divisions were sent from Egypt to France in 1916, General Archibald Murray, commander of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, sent this letter to Wully Robertson, Chief of the Imperial General Staff. In it Murray is pretty scathing about the Australians, criticising their discipline, leadership, morals, and egotism.

To me it demonstrates the clear disdain British regulars had for the Australians as soldiers who may have been brave, but were ultimately unsoldierly. It also shows that this wasn't a universal view of all "colonial" troops, and in particular didn't apply to the other half of Anzac, the New Zealanders.

"In order to prevent any possible disappointment regarding the military value of the Australians when they arrive in France, I think I ought to write and tell you privately what my opinion of them, as a fighting force, is. You are of course, at liberty to communicate this to Haig for his personal information should you so desire it.

They are unquestionably from a physical point of view a magnificent body of men, and hard and fit as they can possibly be. The finest by far that I have ever seen. As regards discipline, I wish to make it clear that I have never seen any body of men in uniform with less idea of discipline. I am, of course, doing all I can to put matters right as regards discipline, but it is an uphill task because the Australian officers are, as a whole, unequal to the task and not, as a general rule, respected by their men, and among some of the higher commanders there has always apparently been an idea that the Australian is a person to be petted and allowed to have his own notions of discipline. I cannot help feeling depressed when I look at these magnificent men. They are a force which would have made incomparable soldiers if properly taken in hand by British officers when they arrived, and who have been nearly spoilt by neglect on the part of their commanders to instil into them even the rudiments of soldierly instincts. Matters have now been allowed to go on for so long that I fear it will not be easy to remedy the present state of affairs. As regards the general training of the Australians as distinct from trench warfare, practically nothing was possible from this point of view whilst they were on the Peninsula, and previous to their arrival there apparently they had only undergone very partial training. Everything possible has been done during the last two months to prepare them for warfare in France, but there is leeway to make up and of course their lack of discipline and the inefficiency of their officers are a very great handicap, as is their enormous conceit in themselves. It has been so long the custom in the newspapers to laud the Australians as the finest soldiers in existence that it is very difficult now to convince them that they know very little of warfare. Frankly, I am anxious when I think of what may happen when they get to France on the march and in the towns and villages where they are billeted. Their Staffs will have a heavy task should they have to organise an operation where prolonged march discipline, as well as other discipline, is essential. Of the magnificent bravery of the Australians, of course, there is no question, but if they have to take part in operations such as we have seen in France, their want of complete training, their lack of discipline and absence of soldierly, distinct from fighting, instinct may, I fear, involved them in unnecessarily heavy losses. My remarks chiefly apply to the Australians and not to the New Zealanders, who are in many respects superior to the Australians except in physique."

"Next, cover the pot with the lid upside down and place ice cubes in the lid. Bring the pot to a boil and then allow it to simmer until the petals lose their color."

Hey All! Another short horror story for you all, this one's a bit longer than usual, and I do feel obligated to put a trigger warning in front of this one for self-harm and attempted suicide.

When I was younger I used to always pick at my skin. It didn’t matter where, it could be the cuticles of any one of my nails, it could be a cut on my arm or a scab on my knee, anything was fair game. Hangnails were the most satisfying, I’d make it a game to see how much I could pull them before they tore off.

My parents were understandably disturbed by it, and they spent a good amount of time trying to break the habit. “Stop that, Hanna! It’s gross!” They’d tell me. It worked mostly, though I still find myself picking at a cuticle or pulling a hangnail every now and then.

Nowadays I’m a medical student at university, two years into a Dermatology diploma. Some might say that the job was practically made for me, but honestly, I only picked it because a friend of a friend told me it was easy and well enough paid if I got a job in the field.

It was a few weeks ago when I got a call from Melanie. She was another student in my dermatology course, at first I didn’t know her very well but we were friendly enough with each other. Over the last couple of years, our friendship grew, and six months ago I asked her out on a date, and she said yes.

Melanie asked if I would do a favour for her, I was apprehensive and asked for more information before I decided whether or not to agree. Melanie told me that she needed help delivering something to a friend. I asked what it was that she needed help delivering, but I didn’t receive any sort of clear answer, only mumbled excuses.

In the end, I agreed, if she needed help, I’d help, and on a Saturday morning in the middle of winter I found myself standing outside Melanie’s home. I knocked on her door and after a few minutes and some more knocking, just as I was preparing to give up and leave, the door opened. Standing just past the threshold was Melanie.

She smiled and invited me inside. I thought that the package must be inside, and wondered what it was. I asked Melanie what we would be delivering, and to my surprise, she turned to me with a confused look on her face. “Delivering? What do you mean?” She asked me.

I asked her what she meant, she’d called me to come help her deliver something after all. Melanie just shook her head. “No. No deliveries, but I do have something to show you.” She said in such a matter-of-fact way that it was less a suggestion and more of an order that I had to obey.

I followed Melanie through her home, asking her question after question, but the only answers I got were grunts and shrugs. Eventually, we arrived at a door, it was locked. Melanie took a key from her pocket and unlocked the door. It opened to a staircase leading down into a darkened basement, without hesitation, Melanie began to walk down the steps, pulling me after her by the arm, despite my protests about her practically dragging me.

When we reached the bottom of the stairs, Melanie stepped off of them effortlessly, but I thought there was another step and stumbled, nearly slamming face-first into the floor. Melanie caught me and pulled me back up to my feet, I saw a smile on her face. “Don’t worry, I caught you.” She said.

I looked up at Melanie, and in the corner of my eye, I saw something on her arm. She was wearing long sleeves, which I didn’t find unusual considering the cold weather, but when she’d grabbed me her sleeve rode up slightly, and I could have sworn I saw a flash of reddish-brown on her arm.

Melanie realised that I was looking at her arm and quickly pulled her sleeve back down, covering up her arm. My face must have given away my concern, as Melanie quickly assured me that nothing was wrong and that we should keep moving to what she wanted to show me.

Melanie led me to a desk at the back of the basement, I asked if the desk was what she wanted to show me, but she shook her head, opening one of the drawers on it. Inside the drawer was an old journal, she took it out of the drawer and offered it to me. “This is a really old study journal, it’s about early studies of dermatology. I thought of you when I found it.”

I was shocked, early studies of dermatology? I flicked through the pages of the book, there were pages upon pages of messy chicken-scratch writing that seemed to be talking about caring for skin, the different types of skin for different animals of different ages, it even looked like it had some samples, which I found rather disturbing. At the end of the book, there were a bunch of completely blank pages, which I assumed were for future entries that had never been put in.

I told Melanie that this looks like it should be in a medical museum or something, and she just shrugged “You’re the expert with the dermatology stuff.”

I asked where she even found the journal, but she didn’t tell me, saying that it didn’t matter, she asked if I liked it. If I were to answer her honestly I would have had to say I didn’t know if I liked it, it was strange and positively off-putting, but I didn’t tell her that, instead I just nodded. “Yeah, it’s amazing,” I told her. “Thank you for thinking of me.”

When I thanked her I couldn’t help but notice a momentary flash of sadness on her face, but I didn’t ask about it, thinking that it could have just been my imagination. Melanie told me that she had a dinner with her mum that she needed to get ready for, and told me that I could stay if I wanted, but she would be busy. I told Melanie that I’d leave her to it, and left her home with the book after saying goodbye.

I noticed as I hugged Melanie at the door that the parts of her body that were covered with clothes felt rough through them, I didn’t say anything but left very concerned.

When I got home I put the journal Melanie had gifted me on my desk next to my computer and sat down to try and find any information about it online. There were no names in the book, so finding information about it online was difficult, but after lots of searching through medical research papers, forums, and more, I found a website that seemed like it might be related to it.

The website didn’t have any pictures, but it described the book it was talking about as ‘An old, leatherbound journal studying skin, including samples.”. The book was said to have been written by somebody named Dr. Gordon Viscera in the early 1800s. I thought that the last name was a bit on the nose.

Apparently, Dr. Viscera had been studying skin and had been arrested for graverobbing. It didn’t say what Dr. Viscera did with the bodies he dug up, but considering the samples, it’s not too hard to imagine. In 1862, a week after he was arrested and a day before his trial, he was found dead in his cell, stripped entirely of his skin.

After I read that, I stopped researching. I didn’t want to know about some insane doctor who got skinned. I left the journal on my desk and went to bed.

I fell asleep easily enough, but sometime in the middle of the night, I woke up. I felt a sharp pain in my right arm and flinched. In my left hand, I realised I was holding something, I dropped it and ran to my bedroom light. Turning on the light I saw my right arm, it was a mess of torn skin and flayed flesh, in some places even cut down to the bone.

I gasped and sat down on my bed, entirely in shock. I realised that sitting on the bed next to me was the journal, that must have been what I was holding when I woke up. My arm wasn’t bleeding, it appeared as though it had always been in that state, even though of course it couldn’t have been.

I picked up the journal that lay next to me and opened it. I’m not sure if I knew what I would see as I flicked to the later pages of the book, but I think that something inside of me knew what I would find. One of the blank pages near the end of the book had been filled, my torn skin had been crudely stapled into the page.

Struggling to hold back vomit I dropped the book to the floor. I picked up my phone and dialled in triple zero, just before pressing enter I stopped, I didn’t have any reasonable excuse for how this happened to me. It looked like I’d done it to myself. Hell, maybe I had. I couldn’t tell them or I’d get thrown into a mental hospital.

Instead of pressing enter, I deleted the numbers and replaced them with Melanie’s number, I pressed enter and waited for her to pick up. Ring… Ring… Ri– Just before the third ring I heard a beep as Melanie picked up.

“What the hell is happening, Melanie?! What the fuck did you give me?!” I shouted into the phone. I waited for a response but couldn’t hear anything except the faint sound of breathing, I turned up the volume and listened keenly. “Hanna. I’m so sorry. I just wanted it to stop.” I heard Melanie whisper into the phone.

I began to panic more, I shouted into the phone asking if Melanie was okay. Then the phone beeped as Melanie hung up. She hasn’t picked up since, but she sent me a message, “Meet me.”. But I didn’t want to meet her, I didn’t want to face her like this.

I tried to get rid of the book in so many ways, tearing, burning, drowning. It always came back, I woke up in the middle of the night with more of my skin and flesh removed and placed into the book. The night before I decided to go to Melanie I woke up with my fingers digging through my chest and flesh thrown haphazardly across my bed, the journal lying open next to me. That was the last straw, I had to go to Melanie’s home.

I put on enough layers of clothing to hide the skin that had been affected and drove to Melanie’s home. I knocked on the door and didn’t receive any response, after about a minute of waiting I decided to break in. I threw a rock into a window and went inside.

Inside Melanie’s home, I was immediately hit with a strong stench of rotting material. It was darkened inside thanks to the blinds all being shut and the lights being off. I drew back one of the blinds to let light in and realised that everything in the room was covered in flesh and skin that had been thrown around and stapled to walls. I gasped and struggled not to turn and run the way I came.

I moved to Melanie’s bedroom and nearly didn’t realise that the pulsating mass of flesh and bone on the bed was my girlfriend. I wanted to scream but didn’t. I cautiously approached the messy remains, realising as I did so that Melanie was still alive, what was left of her face looked up at me, and I heard something that I could only interpret as “Kill me.” So I did. I went into Melanie’s kitchen and took the largest knife I could find, I returned to Melanie’s room and got to work.

As I slashed up the remaining parts of Melanie I couldn’t help but have my mind wander to the thought of a nice steak dinner. When I was done I knew, the pulsing stopped. I’d killed Melanie. I turned the knife on myself then. I couldn’t let myself become like her, and I couldn’t live with the fact that I’d killed her.

I slashed at my neck, my stomach, my legs and my spine, tearing flesh apart and ripping out bones, as I slowly removed my ability to do anything by cutting tendons and muscles and I lay there on the floor unable to finish the job I realised my mistake, the book wouldn’t let me die, not by my own hand at least.

I still lie in pieces in Melanie’s bedroom, and I can’t help but think that I am nought but meat.
