Baku Yumemakura`s Twilight Theatre (夢枕 獏 とわいらいと劇場) - Studio Pierrot and D.A.S.T - 1991
This is a fairly unknown anthology of four shots based off stories written by the Japanese novelist Baku Yumemakura, who has had several anime adaptations of his work over the years. Each story features some kind of supernatural or horror element blended with a modern day setting and every segment was directed by a different talent, with the final story notably being directed by famed animator Shinya Ohira.
I can’t understand what’s happening in the OVA but I found its mature tone and diverse array of art styles for each short to be really interesting, so hopefully someone will fan sub the anthology in the future. In the mean time, you can read Ben Ettinger’s fantastic article about Twilight Theater over at Anipages.
Also, the second short called “Tatami Voyage“ takes place during Christmas so get into the holiday spirit and watch some anime :)
